The Ace hardware surprised me today, they have many high quality brand names. For example, I noticed they carry Traeger cooking goods; advertised on the highly popular Joe Rogan "podcast", Joe Rogan is hilarious, but hes famous for more than just the man show. He has some really interesting opinions, and I can agree that Traeger makes some great stuff! Anyway, the friendly staff, politely directed me to Jacob, whom helped me install some license plate hardware. My new license plate hardware looks fantastic, and things are neat and tidy in there. The Ace in Mchenry, IL still has blooming flowering plants on sale for $1! Wow! So, I stocked up, and I might return to get my Christmas tree. It looks as if they receive their 3s from a larger 3. It is either some really nice trim, or a shame they cut the roots, but I think I'll try rooting one this season, or if all else fails I can use the wonderful evergreen chips in the garden this spring; maybe, the new Traeger smoker could be the answer. Definitely was satisfied with my purchase, and thank you Alice for setting up my new Ace account. I'm so pleased I found a good price on the plants and hardware. Our Amarylis is planted inside right now, and looking forward to next spring! read more

Before I didn't really have a problem with this location until I saw how the staff was as being treated. The staff was all very friendly but the management and ownership could use a self check about the attitude and tone in which they treat their staff. I will no longer support this store due to the poor care they give their employees. I never hoped for a business to fail but the employees deserve better than the horrible management they have. read more

I've never written a review for a hardware store, but this needs to be said. My husband and I have been coming to this Ace ever since we bought our first home. They are the only Ace within an hour that carries the line of paint we prefer. They are very kind and knowledgeable, especially Shea. Speaking of Shea, we got a can of paint two weeks ago that accidentally spilled in our car and onto my husband as it wasn't tightened properly. Not a big deal, truly, but Ace went above and beyond, offering to replace the can for free, plus pay for a $100 car detailing. We declined the car detailing and instead asked if we could have enough paint to finish our project. They gladly gave us four gallons of paint for free; truly the nicest gesture we've ever received from a store. She truly hooked us up! I'm very pleased with everything from this location including the service, selection, and value. We've been able to renovate our new home at a very affordable price thanks to Ace. We will remain loyal to this location so long as they keep the Magnolia paint line in stock! read more

I love this store. And Gary is the best store manager. I had an issue with a snowblower that snowballed into other issues. Gary took complete ownership for the problem and made it right. Good luck getting service like this at your big orange box store. If you are deciding between shopping the big store and this family friendly service oriented store, the choice should be simple. It very hard for me to review Ace Hardware due to the fact they have helped me for over 25 years. When this store was owned by the Bjorkman Brothers. It was the home repair place to go! Very helpfull, knowledgeable and pleasant. Unfortunately they sold out. The new owners are all about making the all mighty dollar and the hell with customer service. The store has minimal employees and they don't have a clue about home repair regardless of what it is! That's a shame they went from Hero to ZERO almost overnight. What a shame! read more

I've been going here for decades. Just for the local convenience, not the prices of course. I have never been treated more poorly than I have recently there. The smoke detectors were all in wrong places and I noticed when they tried charging me more than what I read in the aisle. After I brought it to an associates attention her response was "I guess that's too bad" NOT PROFESSIONAL!! If just the one I got off the shelf was wrong I can understand. But when all of them were in the wrong spots, that's not my fault. Even though that's what the associate seemed to think. I'll be going to Home Depot for EVERYTHING from now on. I'll make sure my neighbors & friends are not treated the same way I was. read more

Customer service here has dropped dramatically! Several older men, all-be-it, experienced, have no real desire to assist anyone. Watch them, they move about avoiding contact and looking busy, but all are retired from somewhere and just trying to pad their incomes and do as little as possible. On short older guy, raspy voice, elevates his voice so the whole store can hear. Almost yells at you. Another, likes to show hand written, on card board and tucked away in a corner, "forbidden " practice signs, to discourage the customer with an inquisitive mind wondering why what he wants to do shouldn't be done that way. They don't have time for a simple explanation, nor the courtesy to address the customer with respect. fewer and fewer cars frequent their lot, I've noticed, and I hope their fate is the same as Woodstock's. Talked with Brett from paint department. He's helped me before and this review is a long time coming. Everyone I have encountered in the store has been perfection in customer service. Plenty of employees when you need help. Decent selection of products. Never a ton of people and expansive spacious store like the Depots. The prices are always scent as well. I just want to say how happy I was at Ace Hardware! I went in Memorial Weekend for a couple things in their flyer. 2 of the items they were out of. One lady (Peggy) overheard and came over and offered to check the other stores for me. She located them for me and had them set up to be transferred for free to McHenry. After not hearing they were in, I went in to check and Rhea took over. She followed up with me a couple times to keep me updated. Picked everything up today. I am one happy person! Went here not too long ago after I bought my place to get paint; I was in and out of there so many times getting fresh paint and other miscellaneous things. Super helpful staff, knowledgeable. Some of these guys paint for a living on the side so they know what they're talking about. read more

Called the store Sunday to make sure I could return an item we couldn't find the receipt for. Woman said yes, if they couldn't look up the receipt it would be a store credit. This was perfect since we had a lot to buy from them. Get there today, Wednesday, and I'm told they can maybe refund half, but need to check with manager. She comes back in and the manager is refusing refund completely. It was a complete waste of my time and gas. Needless to say I didn't buy the things we needed and we won't be using them for anything anymore. Stinks but if they won't honor their return policy, we can find things at other stores. This has always been one of my favorite hardware stores. It is large, clean and well organized. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. There is a varied array of products besides the big selection of regular hardware store/home improvement store items - Carhart clothing, Egyptian cotton sheet sets!, gift items, cleaning supplies and more There is a big dollar section with everything from kitchen gadgets to snacky food items. Prices are a bit higher than big box home improvement stores, but not by much. read more

On 9/28/16 I called ace inquiring a Weber Genesis e-310. I spoke with Brett who said they had one black one left and it is priced at $519.00 since it was. Wing discontinued. I asked Brett why it was being discontinued. Brett replied with "Weber is coming out with a newt model next year. I went to the Weber show and people are not liking the newer model". I asked Brett what his personal opinion was on the two. Brett said he would buy the older model himself. I asked Brett if he can place the last one they had on hold for me. Brett said yes. I had to use my neighbors vehicle to pick up the grill, drive 25 minutes to get to ace. Arrived at ace asked for Brett and was told he had left for the day. It they had the grill waiting for me. Two gentlemen showed me the Weber spirit series which is a lower model than the genesis. I advised Brett and I were talking about the genesis and not the spirit. Like Brett Said they only had one black genesis left which was outside. The price,$649.99. They would not honor the price Brett gave me, in fact they told me Brett is the assistant store manager. I was advised I would need to call tomorrow morning (9/29/16) and speak with the store manager Gary. So I just got off the phone with Gary and explained to him what had happened the night before. Gary said unfortunately we cannot sell you the grill st $519 but can for $649. I told Gary I could've purchased the grill from a big box store for $599.99 with 10% off but I decided to give my business to a local ace hardware. I asked Gary for the name and number of the district manager. Gary placed me on hold came back and asked for my name again and my phone number. Gary said he would call me right back. Got a call back from Gary he said he spoke with Brett and Brett said I mentioned the spirit. Well that's a lie, I had Brett on speaker phone and my wife heard. I wasn't shopping for a spirit, the spirit isn't being discontinued and the price he gave me isn't even the price of the spirit ($499). Why would Brett go on and on about the genesis being discontinued and about the new model if I supposedly talking about the spirit? Why would Brett say they only have 1 black genesis left in stock when they have 4 spirits?? All lies. Gary said he will sell me the genesis for the price they have 649 and give me a store gift card for 130. No thank you Gary. Told gary I will never ever shop at a ace hardware again. Gary said he will sell me the genesis for the spirit price which is 549. Well Gary I was in your store yesterday and the price of the spirit is 499. Where are you coming up with here numbers? I tried to shop local but I will take my hard earned money to a big box store. Sorry ace you just lost a customer and I'm definitely will be telling all of my friends, family and coworkers. What a shame how mchenry ace treats their customers. Worst experience ever in my life. Wish I can give them negative stars. This is definitely going on social media. read more

I went in to buy some replacement ink cartridges, which were a decent price. I got home and installed them, and it would only print yellow. I brought the yellow cartridge back to the store since it seemed to be the problem, and it did turn out to be defective. Through this process though I wasted my time, and about $30 worth of paper that the cartridge had ruined. Which none of the employees seemed to really care about. I ended up just getting my money back, and no ink since they apparently don't know how to keep things in stock either. If I could rate them a negative number I would. This store is a waste of time and money. read more

No longer is it ..."Ace is the place with the helpful hardware man" it used to be! I used to walk in and be greeted with "how can we help" my last two visits-nope not a soul. My husband would hand me a part and send me off to see Steve. He always had a solution. On my most recent and last trip I asked for assistance with a filter and no help. I went around and found someone but he was busy helping a fellow guy but said he would send someone over to filters. So I waited. This same guy went past with three different customers and would ask me "have you been helped yet" my answer was always the same-nope. I asked him for help, but he was yet again busy with another "male" customer. He knew I was not being helped and he was not interested in helping me! Then an employee was running by and I had to practically trip him, he looked at my air filter and he said he had never seen anything like it. Now mind you it was not his dept, but he bolted. Not sure who the new owners are, but I'm not a happy customer, in fact, consider me gone! read more

Absolutely great customer service. Great selection and really friendly helpful people at this store. Just purchased a lawn mover and needed to use it the same day. They quickly assembled the lawn mower for me and had it ready to use the same day. It was on a Saturday when the store is very busy. read more
