Terrible service for a local store, prefers tu fútil online orders than serve in store customers.

Well we really liked the store in Manhattan KS. This one not really. Why you ask; well I'll be happy to answer. I gave the store two stars because a nice man who works in the paint department showed me the employee who works in plumbing. I approached her and she ignored me and as I asked her if she worked in plumbing she responded with what I thought was "I'm not here." On the inside I figured I just misunderstood her. Wrong. I asked again and said I only had a quick question. She then emphatically said "I'm not here. I'm OFF." Fooled me because I was thinking "uh then why are you here WORKING?" She said again she was off so I set the item causing my aforementioned question on a shelf. She then realized I was leaving and mumbling to myself that I was going to write this missive about the experience. Check. I like to patronize small businesses rather than box stores. But my shopping trip to the box store was no less satisfying than the time spent at Ace today. After all my expectations are that I will need to know what I want at the box store. I probably will not step into the Ace again, and my advice to Ace's management would be to periodically check on your team and consider someone who wants to be service minded. read more

Given my terrible experiences at the Home Depot and Lowe's in town, ACE has become my go-to fix-it spot in Newport News. Every time I go in, I've been able to find someone to help me out. I stopped in this past week to pick up a couple light bulbs and parts we needed to fix a leaky sink. The store itself is small, and thus, sort of crowded and cramped. Think Bed Bath and Beyond level of cramped (small aisles, tons of stock all the way to the ceilings). In general, they do run a smidge pricier than those other big stores, but I just can't walk into either of them without wanting to burn them down, so for the mental sanity, this place is the spot. read more

The first thing that confused me was the parking lot arrangement. There's one entrance in and out and if you come from the north, you're going to have to make a u-turn on Jefferson, which isn't always fun. I wound up parking next door at a bug control factory. Anyway I went into get a lamp fixed, basically the light socket was broken. But I admittedly had no idea what I needed to buy, I had never dealt with a situation like this before. While the staff was nice enough, they had no idea what I needed either. I asked if I could leave the lamp with them so they could figure out what part was needed and it could then be fixed. I was willing to pay extra. But they said no. So I left without any progress made. I'm not mad at all, but it was disappointing that they didn't go the extra mile to help me. read more

I have a few handy bones in my body. Not many, but a few. When something breaks down my first instinct is to try and fix it myself. It doesn't always work out, but I like to give it my all-American best. Several YouTube videos and other forms of over preparation later, I start the project and then immediately realize the myriad tool/items I'll need and don't currently have. Ace Hardware is down the street and has never steered me wrong. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and never make me feel dumb for not knowing the differences between the twenty kinds of hammers there are for some reason. My most recent project included weed wackier repairs and Halloween decorations. I didn't know exactly what I needed, but they patiently helped, and just like every other experience with this place I've had, this one was really good. Thanks Ace! read more

I love having this store as my go-to for hardware, gardening supplies, and more. It really feels like a friendly neighborhood shop and is SO much nicer than going to Home Depot or Lowe's if I can help it. I've even been able to avoid going to Walmart several times by checking Ace first. Recently I discovered they carry supplies for woodcrafting that even Michael's doesn't have! For my gardening season, I've found the soil prices to be very competitive, and there's usually some on sale. Every time I visit this store, the staff members are so kind and helpful. Avoid. Some are not concerned about stores that allow their employees and customers to wander around without masks. But for those who take CDC and Virginia Department of Health recommendations seriously, and understand that in Newport News, we have had 322 deaths so far from COVID, and 900,000 nationally, the issue is a big deal. I challenged one of the employees to put on his mask, and he got into a fairly nasty back and forth with me. When he said he had gotten tested for COVID two days before and was negative, and asked to see it and writing and he told me it was none of my business. I demanded to see the manager. Suffice it to say that he defended the store policy of making wearing masks optional, but did ask if I thought that anybody who disagreed with me was ignorant, at which point I said that I didn't, but that I believed that those who dismissed science were ignorant, and that his store was putting people's lives at risk. And so forth. The discussion did not end well. I told the cashier, a very pleasant woman who wore a mask that I would not return to the store after shopping there for 30 years. This is not about individual rights, it's about pulling together as a community to protect one another through a protracted emergency. I will not go to any store that has no investment in my basic well being. Other stores in the area have mask rules. No need to take foolish risks. read more

On some old postings from 2017 it seems that Ace Hardware was a good place to get a key fob for your car. They seem to charge less than $75 then. Well, today to get a key fob for a Chrysler Town and Country minivan they wanted to charge me $180 and include the key fob, because they don't do any one that you bring to them. I called up the Chrysler dealer and they only charge $150 to program a key that you bring them. And for two keys $155. I guess when Ace was trying to get your business in 2017 it was very cheap then, but now it cost more than the dealer. read more

Before I write a review I really try to go back several times unless it's too bad to go back...this place is a few blocks from our house (new home buyers) and 5 miles from Home Depot. I have gone here several times and EVERY TIME have had some of the worse customer service most notably from the cashiers with the exception of only 1 in all my 5 visits...all seemed completely bored, completely annoyed by having to work. I have gone to Home Depot for any bigger purchases and to me it's worth going the extra miles, the traffic, wasting my gas so I don't have to overpay to deal with someone's attitude...not sure how in the world this place has lasted as long as it has... read more

I went there to buy tools to put together a lawn mower. I didn't have a clue what I needed so I went there. They always provide personal service and know what they're doing. Bob took the time to look at the screws I brought in and helped me get exactly what I needed. I'll keep going to Ace for the quality and service! read more

A small place but not crowded. They have the basics and more. The staff is polite and always more than willing to help. We come here at least once a week. It is -- homey -- in a way. The staff remembers us, for the most part. Once they let us take a part of a purchase out to the car to see if it fit, before charging us. Such a home-town plus. My father ran a small town lumberyard/hardware store in a small town eons ago and this Ace reminds me of the trust and relaxed helpfulness. It is popular so sometimes there are quite a few regulars with more on the weekends. I prefer shopping here than going to the big box(es) as I'm not one to haunt acre long isles and hunt for/beg for service. So I start here, and 9 out of 10 times find what I need without the hassle, without the big parking lot, long hunts and the supper long slow checkout lines. I'm not a handy man. I'm not a construction worker. But my Dad was. I like this place. He would have loved it. read more

ACE really is the place for CUSTOMER SERVICE!! I have had so many positive experiences here that I was compelled to finally write a Yelp review. Every time I have come here, the staff has done everything they could to help me. They took the time to replace my key fob battery (a very time-consuming task for my particular model) and even let me test it to make sure it worked before I paid for it. (I got out of there under six dollars.) If having a knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful staff is important to you, this is the place for you!! read more

was intersted in a $300 item..called and spoke with manger for 30 minutes...said i would call back next day to get final answer on a couple questions...called was told manager was with customer.....finally manager called back 1 hr..33 minutes later...i went with a differnent store to purchase item..seems this store is not interested in following thru. read more

My daughter just had a horrible experience at the Warwick Blvd location. You have done what you can, I suppose, to encourage social distancing. (Not enough apparently). However, my daughter was at check-out, with her 4 year old son, correctly distanced from the customer in front of her, with both wearing masks. From behind, a woman approached, and encroached on my daughter's space. She was as close as possible, without touching her. Fortunately, she was wearing a mask, but she was breathing heavily, making my daughter very nervous. My daughter tried moving up further, but the woman moved up with her. My daughter felt that she and my Grandson were in danger of virus contamination, or anything else this woman could have had. Thankfully, the cashier was fast, and my daughter was able to escape the situation. I believe you should put up something to "make" people like this uncaring person obey rules that are present for everyone's safety. Understandably, my daughter, nor I will be shopping at your store again. The isles are to small, and rules are not always followed. read more

Disappointing trip this morning. Floor service was good but had a trainee on register and had to wait 10 minutes for the person in front of me to get checked out. Trainee was nice and polite, but would think management would staff another register on a Saturday morning at a hardware store. read more
