Friday Harbor ACE is tailored to and responsive to this community: farm/garden, marine and fishing as well as housewares and paint. Many years ago, I had a summer job working at an Ace Hardware in the Milwaukee suburbs; it was fairly legendary for its great service and product selection. Fast forward to my part-time life on San Juan Island, where I get to shop at this also-amazing Ace! In a world where customer service at the retail level seems to be lacking for multiple reasons/excuses, the staff here seem to rise above the challenges and make shopping here a pleasure. In addition, they make the most out of every square foot of space and stock an impressive array of products. This is actually the Ace Hardware that is downtown-ish and across the street from the Bowling Alley. I came here to kill some time after having breakfast at Jimmy's and before many of the downtown businesses opened. Plus, I have always enjoyed browsing around hardware stores. This is a very nice hardware store and they have seemed to work hard to offer a impressive mix of merchandise that caters to island needs. The store was nicely laid out and staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. There's also a community bulletin board and a neat free magazine exchange area in front of the store. read more

There is no way that this establishment is 5 star.......even using a relative scale, the service is 3 star, and that is what it should be judged on. The offerings are good, not great, and the prices are dutifully expensive considering the context....the store has a captive group of patrons. The selection is very good, but we were in need of rope, and wound up measuring and cutting the braided nylon selection at about 90 cents a foot by ourselves, as no service personnel were available at the time. The cashier was slow and vaguely apologetic for her somewhat weak service. IF I had a choice, would not got to this location again, but there is the rub....there is no choice....and thusly, no need for staff and management to try harder to improve the customer service experience. read more

During a winter storm, they had plenty of helpful employees. They even shoveled a path to my car to make it easier for me to load.

On this little island it can be tough to find what you need, and sometimes to find someone who cares about helping you find what you need - THEN THERE IS ACE! The people go out of their way to give a customer-centered level of service that is hard to find anywhere anymore. The store is packed with a variety of merchandise from birthday candles to power tools, to fishing and crabbing gear. This place is a treasure! read more

This Ace Hardware store is an epic small-town hardware store with EVERYTHING you would expect to find and a whole lot you wouldn't. Reading glasses, arts & crafts supplies, fishing tackle, fine spirits :-), scented candles - I'd be confident of shopping for birthday, anniversary, and retirement party gifts here along with everything you need for home and garden work or repair. This is the place for everything from the hardware to fix the broken whatever you brought to the island or buy a crab pot/shrimp net. There is a good selection of anything you might need in the kitchen while on the island, also. The people are helpful and friendly. read more
