We waited just over 2 hours & at the counter. The lady at the counter couldn't check & see what we would be charged. There was one $300+/-charge that came up on the credit card machine that she explained was a security deposit & to call Avis with questions. The charge should have been $200, but came up $300 and she couldn't explain why. In the parking garage, Josh was the employee working. There were marks on the hood & front area around the hood of the car he was giving us. I was worried about being held responsible for this "damage". Josh explained it was a new vehicle & we wouldn't be charged. When looking inside the vehicle, the car was full of trash, we asked about where charging ports were located & Josh told us to go to a gas station & pick up an adapter. At the garage gate, the wonderful female employee (not being sarcastic, she was great), notated the hood & front-end marks on the "pink slip". She notated that the car only had 4000 miles & that "Josh" hadn't even taken the time to put gas in the car! It had less than 1/8th of a tank of gas. This sweet lady explained to us to take a picture of the "pink slip" that most likely when we return the vehicle, the employees will make that "pink slip" disappear & we would be charged for items that we should not be charged for. We were given a dirty rental car, with trash (cups, sunglasses, receipts, & used band aids), hood & front-end marks, & NO FUEL! Terrible customer service. Upon the end of our trip, we made sure to put more fuel in the vehicle than it had when we picked it up. Later that day two separate charges came through on our credit card. One over $300 & another just under $50. Since returning the vehicle I have had daily emails with Avis disputing these unexpected charges, some of which are for fuel. This has been the most disappointing and frustrating transaction of our trip & we won't be using Avis again. To say we are frustrated is an understatement. My advice is to look into other car rental companies. It seems like such a racket with all these crazy fees and surcharges for everything. Somehow, read the fine print before getting to the counter.

Drop-off was just as easy; I just told them where I parked the car. I didn't pay anything for the use of the car that day, but I did check the rates since the experience was so pleasant. For the Indy area, the rates were comparable, if not a little lower, than the competition. I used the rental location on the North Side of Indianapolis, which seems to be their thing with other locations at the airport and Fishers as well. When I called, they said the drivers had gone home already but they would get someone to me as soon as they could. In about 15 minutes Shawn arrived with an almost new shuttle van (I read reviews saying the shuttle vans were old). He immediately jumped out and put my luggage and rollator walker in the van. A short and pleasant 10 minutes later I was at the Payless office. The gentleman behind the counter was very helpful. He told me what they were going to give me and I expressed concern that my large walker (not the little gray ones that fold flat) might not fit in the trunk. So he brought out a Subaru Legacy and while I was doing paoerwork, Shawn loaded everything into the car for me. The counter man went over the rental agreement with me. I said I had purchased insurance through Priceline, and he showed me where to initial and sign, declining coverages. The price I had been quoted was the price I paid. I noted any damage on the slip and off I went. NO ISSUES. When trying to figure out what time I would have to drop the car back, I read dozens of bad reviews. I was extremely worried. But when I got to Payless, Anna came out to the car and asked if I was taking the shuttle. When I said yes, she had Shawn take my things out of the car and put them in the van. I had filled the gas tank right across the street and that was all she checked. She was quite nice. I never even had to go into the office. Then Shawn brought me back to the airport and put my things at the curbside check-in for me. He was even gong to wait until he could find me a wheelchair attendant but I told him that could take a long time and I was fine. He made sure I was all set before he left. I'm 65 and have frequently rented cars from different companies, but never have I had as good an experience as a I did at Payless. I'll definitely book another Payless car rental when I return to Indianapolis. Way to go, Anna and Shawn!!

Although the posted sign says that the fee is for a "smoke smell"- and we don't smoke! So not sure why that charge would ever apply to us but we did have to pick up our dog after vacation so she shed a bit in the front seat. I should have done a quick sweep before returning but my god! $450?! I am sorry- that fee is criminal for some fur- I know the establishment has a detailer in the back, and the man at the desk was incredibly rude and short with me when I was discussing the charge. I get returning the rental in a decent condition. It is not like we blew it up, or caused damage to vehicles whatsoever but that amount is completely absurd for something that will be discarded with the normal clean up process. This location system went down of course after a payment was made and I had to pay twice . I was told it would be refunded however it has not , but the 2nd reservation amount was within hours . Of course you try and call customer service and they have no idea what I am talking about they refer me to the local branch. And now the local branch is acting like they don't know , and I'm out almost $400. This is not right and would appreciate if SOMEONE can reach back out to me about THEIR error. Something simple as 2 phone calls and no one can seem to do it !
