Came here for breakfast this morning and when our food was brought to the table there was a baby roach crawling on the tortilla warmer! It was disgusting and I reported it to the manager who provided a 50 percent discount. Needless to say I will not be eating here anymore. read more

Food was awful, I ordered the Taquito's, it came with rice &beans, the rice and beans were both cold, the taquitos were lukewarm, the chips were over fried tasted burnt, guacamole was tasteless. keep in mind this Resturant is at the last exit in the US before crossing into Tijuana Mexico, I expected better food. This has been one of our go-to breakfasts spots when visiting family in San Diego. I cannot comment on their lunch or dinner entrees, but we have always had a very good breakfast here. My favorite is the cheese enchiladas with red sauce. The portions are huge and the service has always been good. On weekends it can get pretty busy, and we have had to wait over 30 minutes in the past, but other times we've been able to get seated fairly quickly, so I guess it just depends on the time you arrive. After a day full of shopping at the outlets my friend had an idea to go to Achiote. Never been here before and it sorta reminded me of like a Chilis/Applebees first going in. I have always been a fan of the Achiote breakfast but this time I decided to try their lunch menu. I was craving Mexican Food and what better place than Achiote. Well.... Not recommending it. I had the tostadas de carne desebrada which were (sad to say) very bad. The meat smelled and tasted old and the sauce was like from a can. Last time I tried this place it was yummy it was about two years ago. Service was great! I went in today I kid you not they raised the prices not by a little or a few dollars more to each item. No no, enfrijoladas which is literally two tortillas dipped in beans with cheese and potatoes cost 20.50 A California burrito 21 dollars. I'm not cheap I like going out and eating out but they charge more than Javier's in La Jolla. They have steak and eggs for 34 dollars. Not even brigantine steak. Best Mexican food in town! Best chilaquiles verde, enchiladas con mole, ensalada verde and Much more! The food always comes out nice and hot and always tastes fresh! Service is excellent never had an issue with anyone or service. Restrooms are available and most of the time clean. Cafe de la olla is delicious and probably the best one around town. Haven't found anything close to the one they serve at achiote. Definitely a family environment and great place to have breakfast, lunch and dinner. Been here for breakfast it was good but I ordered the chilaquiles plate which didn't come with eggs. Had to buy them on the side that was an additional $5. How can you offer chilaquiles without eggs? It's a traditional Mexican plate should come with eggs, it's like cereal without milk?! The server who was an older man rude in the sense how he explained their coffee policy IF you dare your coffee he would automatically charge us. So be careful in letting someone taste your coffee. I have been here a couple of times over the years. Today was the visit that really made me review this establishment. The wait was less than 5 minutes on a Monday lunch hour. Was served chips and salsa along the drinks in no time but the food did take a little longer than expected, although the food made up for the time. The Caldo Norteño was super good and served in a big bowl. (Large). They have many options for dessert and I opted for the Tres Leches, it's one of the best around. I've been coming her off and on for the chilaquiles. Today, I decided to have the Tortilla Soup and Beef Tostadas. I was very disappointed with the soup. It was lukewarm and had no taste. It was basically water with coloring. They bring you the cheese, avocado, cream and extra chile sauce on the side; and it didn't help. The tostadas were okay. 10/30/21: kind of like a Mexican Denny's but nicer decor. 100% of the staff is friendly and helpful. They do breakfast but we opted for the lunch special. $9 Enchiladas with beans and rice. Ordered one with chipotle sauce and one with móle which like a sweet sour chocolate flavor. The enchiladas were a 7/10, the beans 7/10, the rice 6/10. We had the guacamole and chips. Had the eponymously named 'Achiote', which is a omelette stuffed with meat and served with cooked potatoes, beans and tortillas (corn/wheat). The half omelette is more than enough for one person to finish in one sitting. Decent taste and filling quantities. I ate here several years before for lunch. This was my first time eating here for breakfast since we had some time before the outlets opened for some Xmas shopping. As we were walking into the restaurant we realized this place would be very good for breakfast. There were crowds of people just waiting for their seating. After waiting for about 30min we were seated near the bar. We ordered a carne asada burrito and Chilequiles. The waiter did forget some items such as the chips. They put the salsa out but forgot the chips. I ended up ordering 2 eggs on the side and they forgot the eggs when my order came out. Other than that, the dishes were very fresh and hot. My wife ordered the burrito so I wasn't able to try any of hers. My chilequiles had chipotle cream sauce. It wasn't spicy so that was good for me. It was smothered in that chipotle cream sauce which was ok after receiving the dish. But as you get deeper into the plate, the sauce became a little overwhelming. By the time I received my eggs, it was already too late as I began getting full with everything else. The refried beans were very good as well as the sides of potatoes. Then I had to top it off with Mexican Hot Chocolate which was very good. Overall, breakfast at Achiotes was very good and will definitely return for more items next time. read more
