But today I happen to be in the area and I told my husband to try this place out. He was so happy! Once you place your order our waitress came with a big plate of sweet bread and you get to pick one! I picked the concha and my husband got the pineapple empanada! We ordered a bit of everything. My husbands go to meal always is chilaquiles. So he ordered the DIVORCIADOS $16.50 Half green and half red with carne asada and beans. We also got the CARNE EN SU JUGO $15.99 And I got the MENUDO ROJO $15.50 Let me start off by saying everything was amazing! It all tasted like it was homemade! Perfectly seasoned, with hand made tortillas. The carne en su jugo was really good! I understand why they are known for that dish. I loved my Menudo! I was craving it and it was perfect. The chilaquiles, the chips weren't soggy, they still had a bite to them. The sauces had so much flavor! My husband and I left with full bellies and a big smile on our faces! All the waitresses and waiters were so nice! Diego was telling us the story of the restaurant. Which was nice to hear. All family owned. Hopefully they open another restaurant closer to us!!! I was really excited to try this place because of its 4.4-star rating, but unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations. The café de olla was extremely sweet. I asked for a second cup, hoping it would be different, but it was just as sweet. The jamaica had very little flavor, and the mole chilaquiles were bland and lacked the rich flavor I was expecting. The only highlight of our visit was the waitress. She was friendly, attentive, and provided excellent service throughout our meal. I started my breakfast off with a delicious cup of Cafe de Olla. I was then given some complimentary chips and beans. The chips appeared to be freshly fried and with the beans were a perfect start to a delicious meal. I ordered an omelette and I typically don't get chicken with my omelette but I decided to try something different so I ordered the Chipotle Chicken Omelette. I was pleasantly surprised and this omelette was bursting with flavor! The chicken was shredded and had a very nice flavor - with the chipotle sauce it put it over the top! It's true, food is love and the owners care about the quality and taste of their Mexican cuisine. This place is not typical, it is special. I ordered the El Guero omelette, potatoes, and home made corn tortillas. Diego one of the sons, said they cook everything individually and on La Plancha the flavors of my meal are memorable. I think that is the best omelette I ever had, yummy. Such a cute place to stop in at eat at, its right off the freeway, so if you are coming south, stop in and have a delicious meal. Authentic!!! First word that came to mind with this small gem. From the great service very attentive and friendly. To the Mexican decor and ambiance inside. Now the food was a wow factor, we ordered the chilaquiles verdes with chicken, the chicken was full of flavor and super juicy. The chips were fresh and super crunchy (my favorite) and the salsa was perfect taste not too sour as tomatillos tend to be. The very first thing that impressed me was the simple fact that instead of chips and salsa they had brought us chips and beans! I mean this was a cool deviation from the normal chips and salsa. This OG place is not what it once was. The quality is poor now. Carne en su jugo was probably the best thing on the menu, the issue is that it tasted as if it was reheated 2-3 times. The meat was pretty hard. The menudo which is why we visited today smelled so bad. Its an indication that the pork isn't properly cleaned. The one thing to watchful out for are the sides you order. I paid $5 for a basket of chips that tasted like burnt oil, and $5 for a side of lechera. This is very bad for this side of town. I would be okay if it was in La Jolla or Coronado. This food was not shy -- everything we tried here was rich and flavorful and super authentic. We stopped in on a Thursday afternoon for a late lunch, and it was pretty busy. Not a lot of parking, the interior of the restaurant felt cozy with some tightly packed tables and delicious aromas. We tried: Enmoladas con Pollo - The chicken was chicken, and the mole was absolutely bomb. A little on the runnier side and definitely heavy on the cocoa, the fresh tortillas soak it all up. Every bite was tender, meaty, and warming. Carne en su Jugo - yes, it's summertime and yes, I got the caldo, and yes, it was totally worth the abuela-status. The carne en su jugo was SO good. Ordered the steak and menudo. ​Food was good but not great. Appreciated the bean dip with chips instead of salsa. Restaurant is cute and staff were very friendly. Would have given a 5...but felt jilted when I got the bill. There was a sweet grandma type offering pastries to customers. So we took them assuming it was complimentary. They were $3.50 each, so charged $7. Plus they added a credit card fee. I don't like these kinds of surprises. I don't have a problem with credit card fees if notified in advance like on a clearly posted sign or better yet on the menu. Not saying how much the pastries were (they were the worst part of the meal - we got strawberry and pineapple, both of which were like jam instead of fruit) reminded me of being overseas when hidden costs are added or being charged for tea in a Chinese restaurant (again I don't mind if it's noted on the menu, but I don't like surprises). To me, this is worse than restaurants that note on the menu you will be charged for things like employee health insurance or "service" rather than increasing the prices. I love it What i don't recommend is ordering through yelp app (ends up going through grubhub) because it forces you to add nervio or pata to complete the order and once you add it, on the restaurants side it only shows them nervio. This because I ordered with pata and also put it in the instructions however the lady told me it only showed them I added nervio.
