The rockfish was very good, the coleslaw was average and the mac & cheese had good flavor but the noodles were really over cooked and mushy. The food was great! Everyone in our party really enjoyed their meals. They were great at accommodating my husband in his scooter. The only problem was with my breakfast. I ordered the Eggs Benedict someone needs to tell the chef that the poached eggs are supposed to be creamy and yolky. My eggs were really hard. I couldn't eat them I told the server and to her benefit she offered to have them remake it however, everyone in my party were practically done. Food - Was very good. My boyfriend ordered the caprese benedict and was totally impressed as was I. He loved everything about it. I ordered the traditional and it was good but not super special but then again it was just a classic traditional. The bacon and eggs were fantastic but the potatoes were a little too crispy for me. Wow! I usually have my regular dish here... The tomato pie. Today, however, I saw something on the featured menu so I thought I'd give it a try... I tried the Juevos Rancheros and let me tell you, don't try this unless you're ok with your tongue exploding from all the flavor!! There were three crispy tortillas stacked with their homemade "steak chili" between each layer. Topped with a couple of eggs and avocado and sour cream (I had the server remove the avacado...yuck) it was the best new taste I've had since I discovered the tomato pie! I'd say it might be my new favorite except I couldn't finish it and still am too full to breathe, lol Great service too! As always!! read more

We have been anticipating the opening of Acme for a few months and were excited to stop by for breakfast this morning. It was quite crowded at 8:30 (opening time) but our food came out fairly quickly as we were one of the first to order. I decided on the French Toast ($8.00) and added "two eggs and meat" for an additional charge ($4.00). The french toast looked good when it arrived, although the portion was a bit stingy (three half pieces) for the price. Unfortunately, looks were deceiving as I cut into, basically, dry bread. Either the bread wasn't soaked long enough or they are using bread that is too thick - or maybe a combination of both. Not worth sending back but definitely disappointing. On the bright side, my scrambled eggs were cooked beautifully. My dining companion had the Chicken and Waffles, which was much better than the french toast. The chicken was moist and had a nice flavor, though a bit over salted. The waffle was nicely cooked. Again, the portions were quite small (basically two oversized chicken nuggets) for the price ($13.00). Decor was nice and service was friendly. I want to like Acme but at least for breakfast, it has a way to go. read more

Wandered into Acme Cafe on a lark and the recommendation of a local. I found it to be charming. The decor was kitchty kool, and the menu was straight forward, if not sparse. Breakfast was solid. Service was amazing, especially with the crowded dining room. We opted to sit at the open seating bar area and were pleasantly surprised at how friendly everyone was. Owner Cecelia came out to meet and greet, and we found her passion for Acme cafe almost as good as the breakfasts.... Biscuits and gravy were great, the hash Hubs had was also good. I had chicken and waffles...Nom! They make a house-made hot sauce that is amazing. But what really changed my life was their sticky buns....seriously, you have to try a fresh hot sticky bun....it was fresh out of the oven and AMAZING! We took a sak of them home...I should just tape them to my thighs, but I don't care....mind blowing sticky buns. Don't know how people can give this place less than 4 stars. I'm adding one to even things out a bit. I'll be back for dinner sometime. read more

Pro: Our drinks stayed full. All in all, this restaurant is no different than any other new, locally owned "cafe" that sets up shop in Salem. Limited, boring, and 'already one that' menu. Nothing jumped off the page at me, so I went with the pastrami fries (because the waitress declared them to be "AWESOME") and a small garden salad. The pastrami fries were NOT awesome. Obviously Acme discovered a profitable way to use up the end bits of their pastrami... the meat was in teeny pieces. The curds were curds and the gravy was flat. This dish needed something to make it pop. Unfortunately, it fell flat and instead of enjoying what should be a tasty treat, I begrudgingly picked at it. It was not worth $10. My garden salad was made with those shitty mixed greens. You know the ones--with the leaves that are too long, can't be pierced well with a fork, and don't mix well with any toppings. My salad was flying all over the table. And the ranch? Forgettable. This place was really hyped up before its opening. That happened, in part, due to the owner(s) having been the owners of J.James. I don't know how (or why) they created a restaurant with such a boring and flavorless menu. More importantly, I don't know why Salem is enamored with it. ** Oh I almost forgot! They're warm rolls? Food was good but pricey, like others say. Workers were very rude. Despite what the info for this place says, it is NOT good for kids. They only have one high chair, which was in use when we were there. There is no kids menu. There are no kids cups, cups with lids, etc. In fact, the workers seemed genuinely put off that my wife and I brought our children. We will not go back. Again, if you're without kids in tow it's not a bad spot. Food was fine but we received poor service and it simply was not family friendly. Lots of better options in Salem for us. read more

This is a great unpretentious local eatery, there are many scrumptious looking breakfast options for individuals that follow a routine American diet. There is an open bay kitchen and the aroma is very inviting. From What I understand, it is the 1st local owned breakfast place in South Salem. The restaurant is comfortable, the staff attentive, the breakfast was delicious with generous servings- I could only finish just 1/2 of it. Their breakfast roasted potato dish was crispy and cooked to perfection. My vegetable egg white scramble was cooked with minimal oil and the veggies were sauteed and not raw. I enjoyed the home made jam made with real berries and not too sweet. They bake their own bread and they have gluten free options. My disappointment is that there is no vegan meal options, no alternate options to white sugar and dairy products for my coffee. Though they are willing to modify the entrees when possible, I would not consider them a vegan friendly restaurant. I am a vegan who will, on occasions eat egg whites and Salmon when there are no other alternatives. In these modern times, when there are more and more individuals avoiding meat and dairy products, I was surprise at the lack of alternate options. Breakfast was close to 15.00 dollars. The large serving would make up for the cost, it if I was a big eater. I would probably return for an egg white scramble at some point if there was an alternative to the white sugar and milk. It's not a restaurant for vegans, but I understand why individuals with a routine diet would rave about it. I would certainly recommend this place to my non vegan friends. It's not too often that I'm on this side of town, so I pulled up Yelp to see what was nearby and decide to give Acme Cafe a try. I ordered the Loco Moco which is Rice, a hamburger patty, two eggs and brown gravy on top. Overall it was pretty good, although the hamburger patty was burnt to a crisp even though I just asked for it "normal", if that is normal you may want to ask for raw and it might come out perfect (LOL). Anyway, the food and service was pretty good, although I think the prices are way steep for the style of the restaurant and what I got. My plate consisted of about a cup of rice (dirt cheap), gravy (dirt cheap), 2 eggs (very cheap) and a hamburger patty. $14+tip seems pretty steep for that. Anyway, nothing too terrible about the experience or great about it. I'm willing to give it another whirl if I have $20 to spend and am in the area. read more

I have visited Acme several times for both brunch, lunch, and dinner...and I have never been disappointed. For brunch I recommend the Classic Benedict or the breakfast sandwich. The best part about the breakfast sandwich, besides that it's on Texas toast, is the creole mustard sauce. For lunch/dinner I recommend the chicken or fish basket - they have been cooked perfectly each time. Service is good and the patio is perfect. read more

Ate a second time on 6/5/2014. The disappointing thing was up front: rolls come with dinner but they were cold and very firm. We didn't even try them. It's hard to believe they could not have been kept in a bread warmer. My wife had a build your own salad and was very pleased. She like the croutons made from...old rolls. She also though the deviled eggs were very tasty. I had the dinner special which was roast pork with a brown mustart glaze. The glaze was very good and the pork cooked just right. The vegetables. shaved carrot and zucchini with a dill glaze, was tasty but barely warm. The potato pancake with apple, had chunks of what seemed like left over bakers, which would be fine, but was also barely warm. The problem here is attention to detail. Hot food in a café atmosphere is a must, and easily rectified: cook hot sides to order, and keep your bread warm. read more

Quality diner food, yes, that does exist. Go in with the mindset that is in fact classic American diner food, but made of quality, fresh, local ingredients. The build your own salad with their house made vinaigrette is to die for! Also, aside from food, the dessert menu is one of the best in town. Snowball is the best, vanilla ice cream with essentially toffee bits covering it. But beware, it's huge! Best shared with another person. Service has been excellent every time I've gone. Once, they double charged my friend's credit card and gladly refunded her, as well as gave her a gift certificate. The owners are local and have both owned other very good restaurants. read more

We were very impressed with the food here. I had the Hot Brown, my husband had the ribs. We both thought our food was excellent. We started with the pimento and cheese which was amazing. We came in on a Friday evening and had to wait about 10 minutes for a table, but were able to wait at the bar. Service was excellent, and the restaurant is very nice. Wildly inconsistent food and service have been my experience at Acme Cafe ever since it opened and breakfast Tuesday continued that tradition: Doughy, rubbery blueberry pancakes and mediocre ham with two eggs and cafe totaled $21. I still tipped 20%, bringing the total to $26. Acme would do well to taste the food it serves. It's not impressive to get served lousy ham that's branded with "ACME" on the surface. Carlton sells much better ham than thus and Acme's competitors serve better ham, too. The last time I had breakfast at Acme with a friend I asked the waitress for an extra order of gravy for my biscuits and gravy. She responded that all their diners did that, but the order came with more than enough gravy. I had plenty leftover and when I heated up the leftovers I wanted plenty of gravy. And I would have paid for extra gravy. But the know-it-alls at Acme didn't deliver on what I, the customer, asked for and was more than willing to pay for. And so the wildly inconsistent -- but consistently expensive -- tradition of Acme continues. read more

Acme Love the location. But so hit and miss. Arrived at 7:15 and they had run out of both dinner specials and the dessert special. This is really a diner and breakfast type service so expect that at dinner. A couple of times ago my food arrived before my cocktail, so cancelled drink. Again, last night wait ten minutes for drink and it arrives seconds before salads and entree moments after salad. Service is breakfasty, like i ordered coffee to have with my eggs. Food is okay, but with the experience that james and ritter have i would think they could work out dinner service better. Kitchen on court street is a much better dinner/diner experience. read more

Just finished a Valentine's Day meal here. The restaurant is stylish, yet inviting and "home-y" and the staff are extremely friendly and attentive. We started with duck confit salads, which were phenomenal. Perfect in every way. A bottle of cabernet wine joined us for the evening. I had gulf shrimp and grits and my wife had the bacon wrapped filet mignon. All perfect and perfectly sized portions. We are both big eaters and we were both very full. Finally, the Baked Alaska for dessert. I'm not even going to describe it, as you need to experience it for yourself. It comes out on fire. Enough said. Fantastic. The complaints of poor ventilation are ludicrous. It smells like food inside of the restaurant. Deal with it. If you'd rather have a non-real dining experience, go to Applebees. As frequent Portland food adventurers, we are extremely excited to have a hip and unique place like ACME in Salem. We can actually hang around Salem a little more often. :) read more

Still 5 stars after countless trips. This is one of our favorite spots in Salem. The burgers (beef or black bean) are delicious. My husband orders the chicken fried chicken nearly every time and is never disappointed. We love sitting at the bar and chatting with the bartender and watching them cook. matzo ball soup is always a favorite, the broth is wonderfully flavored. Not a romantic dinner setting if you want an intimate vibe but great food with great service. Glad they are doing well! read more

Got seated and waited for over twenty minutes without even being approached by a server. Finally a girl asks if we've been helped, and when we say no, she says she isn't in this section anymore, and goes and checks who is supposed to be helping us. A male server gets us our drinks, and tells us they'll get us a free dessert. We also get a free side of deviled eggs which was nice but we just wanted our food. Food was very good, but not sure if it was worth the wait. For our free dessert, we asked to take a regular cinnamon roll to go. Came home to find out it was an peach cinnamon roll. Couldn't even eat it. Very disappointed in what I thought would be a cool place. Won't be back. read more

I loved this place!! We had planned to go to another local breakfast favorite. But they always have a two hour wait and no one was answering the phone for take out orders, so we decided to try something new! I really like the decor! It was cute and fun without being overboard. And the food was really good. I got the biscuits and gravy. They were delicious. And a huge serving! I barely managed to eat half of it, and I was super hungry! But the star of the morning was my SO's choice of chicken and waffles. It was sooooooo good. The waffle was fluffy and delicious. The chicken was fantastic. Great coating and great flavor. I am a fried chicken snob and I was pretty satisfied with this. We didn't try them, but their selection cocktails looked great too. I ordered fish & chips, it came with something, they called coleslaw. Their "coleslaw" was the worst I've ever had. I thought Elmer's was bad but this was even worse than that. It was basically shredded cabbage and almost nothing else. Next, the fish was so disgusting. It had breading that was either overcooked or it just naturally comes out of the grease extremely dark. The fish itself had such a fishy smell and taste to it that I had to request a slice of lemon. Even adding A LOT of lemon juice didn't take away the fishy smell and taste...I could have gone to Long John Silvers and gotten better fish for much less money. The only reason I gave this a 2-star rating is because the service was good and the fries were quite excellent and of a good portion size...but I'm not interested in paying nearly $20 for fries so I think I'll pass on this place from now on and go somewhere else. The fried food was extremely greasy. More diner ambiance than actual flavour. The problem may be that I expected more respect for the food and the customer than what I experienced. Pie sirens called to us and we went back for the pie 3 years later. The crust of the key lime tasted buttery but was very thick, almost 3/4 inch in some places. The sweetened condensed milk layer did not have enough lime for acid or lime zest/lime oil tanginess to balance the richness and sweetness of the condensed milk. The whipped cream on top was not too sweet but layered heavily for my taste and seemed not fluffy, almost cement-like with maximum quantity of stabilizer. We heard nothing but good about this restaurant so decided to try it for breakfast. We were among the first few people there. I have no issues with the prices or the portion size, if the food and service is special. It wasn't. Our server was very late with our drinks and food and instead of apologizing, she made excuses. The people who came in at the same time as us, plus about four other groups who came in later all got served before us. I think the only reason she remembered us is we asked her what was going on. If she would have apologized, we would have been okay. But all we got were excuses and she appeared annoyed. Food quality--I had the eggs benedict, because the menu raved about the homemade hollandaise sauce. It was okay, but nothing special. My husband had eggs, bacon and toast and it was fine. We absolutely love the Wild Pear and expected something similar. We will not be back. read more

Went in this Friday. A blonde haired lady greeted us with her mask around her chin. Not even trying to cover her mouth or nose. We sat outside, and another hostess got us water. She was friendly. As my wife and I were discussing if we wanted to continue to eat there and perhaps figure out a tasteful way to ask the blonde waitress to pull up her mask, she comes around for our drink order. Still around her chin. I'm not sure of blonde waitress overheard us before we could talk to her, but then before we get our drinks a purple haired waitress comes and asks if someone has taken our order. "Well one lady grabbed our drink order," I say. "So, no?" she replies kind of rudely. She then takes our order. Admittedly, purple haired lady ended up being extremely nice and helpful the rest of the time (and was wearing a mask, as was the hostess who brought our water). Not sure if she was getting slammed inside or what. Onto the food. I had a scramble with a cheese sauce. Scramble was delicious, although half the potatoes were not cooked. Same with wife's eggs benedict, but she said the eggs benedict part was tasty as always. The kids enjoyed the blueberry pancakes and the (by the looks of it) homemade toast. We've been here quite a bit, although not recently due to COVID and trying to limit being out. It's unfortunate that people still don't want to help mitigate exposure with a simple mask. As everyone says, we all have a choice, and our choice will be to not go back for awhile to Acme. read more
