So recently bought a new BBQ that has a slow smoking feature to it and we've been checking out to see the butcher options in this city. This butcher is conveniently located in the Ritchie area just across from Kind Ice cream. The lineup was minimal to none & I'd say the selection is pretty plentiful for a weekend afternoon. We've never been to a butcher before so it was helpful that the staff could make recommendations for portions of various cuts of meat according to the amount of people you plan to feed and if you want any leftovers. I'd say it's reasonably priced too. I have to say, the meats we bought turned out to be much more fresh & juicy compared to grocery store. I'm almost a convert now. I also appreciate how they have a huge wall of local & specialty BBQ rubs and sauces for sale to give me added inspiration. The freezer section also had a modest selection of various seafood like huge scallops, and other meats including lamb, etc. Definitely a place I'd like to hit up again for great BBQ cuts! read more

Just as another customer stated below, the customer service was the absolute worst that I have ever received, I sure hope Corey (Owner) will address the issue before he loses more customers. I was literally yelled at by one of the employees for looking at the dried spice. Apparently there was a sign stating to ask for assistance, I did not realize that this applied to the reading of the ingredients as well. I will not be going back anytime soon, maybe stop back in a year to see if things have changed. I will be giving my business to Popowich Meats for now, the first/last time I stopped in at Popowich I received nothing but great service, and one of the employees gave my little boy a sucker to boot!! It is unfortunate that I have to revise my review on them because we had been a long-term regular and they are in our neighbourhood, but we stopped buying meat from ACME because of multiple bad experiences. In the past 6 months or so; staff have lost or screwed up our phone in orders and who then accused us of calling in to a different store or not calling at all. The latest poor experience just before the Christmas made us decide to stop going there, which is a shame. Luckily, we have found an alternative butcher that offers similar quality and selection, with noticeably better pricing. It's a bit further for us, but it seems to be worth the drive! read more

Went Acme to get a pound of bacon and walked out with 3 lbs of delicious fresh, smoked locally bacon. Why 3 lbs you say? Because it was far more affordable than I thought it would be. When I got to Acme I was greeted as soon as I walked in, and the place was bustling. They were grinding fresh ground beef, they cut my bacon fresh to order and told me how they get it smoked locally. I also needed to get some sausage casing for making my own sausage. Corey the butcher stopped what he was doing and gave me advice on how to best use the casings and going the meat for my sausage. It was pretty awesome of him. It was a really great experience and I can't wait to go back again to get some summer BBQ meat. read more

One of my favourite things to do is browse the meat aisle at the local grocery store and snicker at the pale looking offerings that I used to buy. Then I go over to Acme, and the meats in their display case all have a much more vivid and fresh looking colour. You know without tasting it which one is going to be better. Since I started going to Acme a couple years ago, I've really come to appreciate what getting to know your butcher can do for you. Corey and the rest of the staff are always ready to help answer any questions about what cuts are best for what type of preparation, and can custom cut to your own specs. Want 1" steaks? No problem. Like them thicker? That's easy peasy too. I like that you can pick up a few other essentials while you're there, like Prairie Mill bread, Brazillian Ice soapstone grilling stones, and an array of seasoned salts and spices. So does it cost more than your big box store meat department? Yes, it does, but you're also getting a better product, far superior service, and the knowledge that you're supporting a top quality young family that is an asset to the community. If that costs a few bucks more I'm ok with that. read more

Meat to dream about! First off I live in St. Albert so what am I doing driving all the way down to a meat store I've only read reviews about? A. Online friends tweeting pictures of yummy meat goodness B. The staff is on twitter and super helpful and friendly C. I wanted some meat So after begging my husband to drive me down there ( with bribes of looking at houses in the area) off we went. First we almost drove past it because its in a unassuming strip mall. Dont judge a book by the cover though!! Inside was bright and clean with lots of helpful staff. I also saw Corey in the back but he looked pretty intense with the meat so who was i to interfere in his craft :) Husband and I picked up a pound of side bacon, a package of bacon bits and two strip loin steaks. Ok I have to admit, I did choke a bit at the total but I'm a firm believer in that you get what you pay for 9 out of 10 times Last night I fried up some of the bacon bits with some diced onion and them simmered in broth with over two pounds of green beans from Riverbend Gardens. YUMM!!!! This morning some bacon with eggs....bacon was awesome!! Tonight the steaks with minimum seasoning were laid carefully on the grill and cooked to almost perfection ( I should have taken them off two minutes earlier) Verdict: The steaks were fork tender AND we both really enjoyed them. At about 10-ish$ for each steak its worth for a occasional treat as we are not fans of steak every weekend but once a month: totally worth the cost!!! read more

This place deserves its five yelp stars hands-down. The staff are professional, friendly, helpful, and obviously take a great deal of pride in running an excellent shop. The product is superb - great choices, high quality meats and extras like eggs, bread, and condiments. I have always been treated really well, there is no air of pretentiousness, even though a shop like this could certainly capitalize on the foodie/hipster trend of the local movement and market themselves as a fashionable and trendy shop. Instead, they stick to the meat, keep things simple, and focus on excellent customer service. I have even thought to myself that if I was looking for different work I could see myself working here, which is a good sign! Other businesses should visit this place and take serious notes about customer service. I purchase whole chickens, chicken breasts, ground bison, stew bison, ground beef, beef steaks, and eggs fairly regularly. I like that you can call ahead and order what you'd like, no pre-payment required. Do this, or go early, as things will sell out. You're buying quality, local meats directly sourced from farmers. Although I've become more interest in meats since shopping here, I wouldn't consider myself well-versed in different cuts and what to look for, etc. I like that the folks at Acme are more than willing to offer suggestions and 'teach' me what to look for, while also giving cooking ideas. I love the history behind this shop - including the Playmobile butcher set displayed on the cabinet that I was told Corey (I think?) used to play with as a child. I was in the other day and while I was being served by a staff member, a young boy came in with a few dollars looking to purchase a single pepperoni stick. Rather than ignoring him or making him wait, another staff stopped what they were doing in the back and immediately came over to serve him, with the attention and respect they'd give any other customer - you just don't see that stuff very often anymore. I love Acme Meat! The people that work here are fabulous, and the best place for beef! It's locally raised near Edmonton, and hormone free! Several different cuts of steak, short ribs, roasts, brisket (when you're lucky)... and chicken and pork too. They also have a really great selection of local sauces and jams (that I can't enjoy none of at the present moment with this torturous elimination diet). Meat heaven. No other way to describe it. Since I've been using Yelp, I've been hearing nothing but good things about Acme, so last weekend I finally decided to check it out for myself. The fact that I was looking to try out a pulled pork recipe might have had something to do with that decision, too. Finding the shop was a bit of a hassle, since my map reading skills are apparently non-existent. Once I arrived, though, I was impressed with how clean the place was. Spent some time working in a grocery store when I was a teenager, and the meat department there was always kind of, well......bloody. Not the case here. I was also kind of surprised that only one other customer was shopping. Kind of expected the place to be busier. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, and chopped off a beautiful pork shoulder for me in short order. I'm glad I wandered in when I did, because that whole "not busy" thing didn't last - as I was paying for my order, I noticed that at least 5 other people had wandered in after me. read more

I'd never been to Acme before because I don't live or work in the area. However, they were able to supply me with some quality pork fat for relatively cheap - I was able to render lots of beautiful, odorless white lard for confit-ing my pork belly and for other cooking needs in the future. I didn't pick up anything else this time but just by looking at the fresh meat in the case and in speaking to any of the employees it's obvious that a lot of love goes into what they do. I will definitely be back :) P.S. They do take credit cards but with a minimum $10 order. They also have parking at the rear. read more

Service is top notch and there's definitely something very cool about seeing the whole operation in action behind the counter. I'm very lucky to have this butcher shop close to my neighbourhood. We've been a patron for a few years now. Our dog approves of the bones (we bake them for half an hour to 45 minutes at 350F, with some water in a loaf pan) when it's available -- these seem to go really fast. When you buy from Acme meat market, you are a direct consumer of sustainable and local food production. (They buy directly from farmers) I love that they round up or down a nickel -- so there's no fuss with pennies. The prices is more than what you'd get at grocery stores, the quality is a lot better too. I don't normally rave about bacon, but the bacon at Acme Meat Market is so good. Chicken is to die for; they're always the first meats to go. They also sell some excellent cheeses and sausages. Now that I've put my 5 stars in, please save some meats and dog bones for the rest of us who can only go on a Saturday. :) It always seems they are wiped cleaned of meats around 1 or 2 pm in the afternoon. read more

I am very happy that Acme meat is there. The quality of the products is undeniable. Getting some grass-fed meat is not so easy and I trust the products to be hormones free, since the size of the cuts look natural. Their sausages are delicious, bone broth tasty. I've gotten some fish too that was great. Lamb has been my favorite so far. Now coming from France where I grew up shopping for meat at the butcher, I'm not easy to impress. I personally would enjoy if they offered other products such as pate, homemade salami, terrines,... but that's because of my cultural background, I understand it may not sell so well. The only down at Acme is the service. Some of the people who help the customers are great, some... not helpful to literally rude. Yesterday I asked for some bone broth and the lady didn't hear me and made a face when she asked me to repeat. I am interested in purchasing liver and when I asked about their organ meat, she explained that the supply is limited but didn't offer any help. I had to ask her if there was a list that i wasn't offer to be put on. The whole interaction was uncomfortable, I felt like i was annoying her. The selection there is broad, which is great. I would like if the staff had some recommendations based on their supplies, season,.. and I also would like to hear about where the meat comes from. I'm willing to spend more for quality meat but one of the reasons I go to a butcher rather than a supermarket is that I want to support small and humane farms, so I like to hear about the people who grow the cattle as well. Overall it's a great place and i am very grateful to have the opportunity to get such good meat, I wish this was the standard and there were more butchers like this. read more

We just got a new BBQ and needed some steaks to try it out. We visited on a Saturday and it was quiet. The gentleman who served us was pleasant and knowledgeable. He was willing to answer questions and was patient with us when we took our time to make our decision. We ended up going with the Ribeye, which was $31.00 for two large steaks. A little pricey but the quality was amazing. Now, I gave it only four stars because it's a touch on the expensive side and the building is run down. It's not dirty, but it's not immaculate either. I think that is because it's such an old building. If you're looking for some choice cuts, check this place out, but be prepared to drop some cash. read more

We've been going to Acme for just over a year or so and have no intention of looking back. The quality of their meats, the quality of the cuts and the quality in which customers are treated make it plain to see that business owners Amanda and Corey care deeply and take pride in their livelihood. They also sell other products such as Monkey Butter peanut butter, spices, mustards, breads and BBQ sauces. They're also wonderful when it comes to custom freezer orders. Oh, and I can't leave this review without mentioning their absolutely delicious greek sausages. You must consider trying some if you have the chance. Also worthy of note: They're well ahead of the curve in the internet side of marketing and keep customers apprised of sales and promotions, which may seem like a no-brainer, but for most local or independent brick and mortar stores this sadly isn't the norm yet. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I don't think anyone does customer service better than ACME. We bought a freezer pack and were shocked at how much we got for our money, especially considering it's all Alberta-raised, hormone-free and antibiotic-free meat. I received a quick response to my email inquiry, was excited about the customization Amanda offered me and was thrilled when the wait was shorter than we anticipated. Since then, we've gone back every week to see Corey and his staff. Even though our freezer is not overflowing with meat, we visit ACME to get our weekly dose of free-range eggs, locally-grown wheat and other goodies (like yummy garlic sausage). In addition to the quality of the products, their staff is delightful. Everyone is friendly, helpful and knowledgable; always taking the time to ask about your day or come out to meet you and shake your hand. I cannot say enough good things about ACME and am thrilled I've found my very own butcher. Maybe they can be yours too! You won't regret it. read more

I'll start by saying there isn't anything negative I could ever say about this place. I was a tough sell to come here from a friend. He swore up and down that if you want met this is the place to visit. I started slow coming here, steaks and chicken. I eventually realized that I was receiving the best quality meat in the city. Now it's all my meat needs under one roof. The quality of meat is nothing short of outstanding! Now don't get me wrong for this quality of meat you will pay extra for it, not saying that much more but we're also not saying these are Costco or Superstore prices. Its the old saying "you get what you pay for". Now that I've told you all about the amazing quality of meats I'll also tell you here that only the finest quality meat from local farms is used. The product doesn't only stop at meat, there is locally made meat pies, seasonings, numerous other products plus cooking books. It's almost your one stop shop for a things spectacular. It would only be fair for me to tell about the people here too. Start with Corey, one of the coolest guys around. He has a true passion for the work he does, he always waves hello when I see him. He is the true definition of customer service. Want a steak cut special? He would love to cut you the special size you wish. Considering he's the man in charge, you can only imagine the customer service given from his amazing staff. Its easy to see that customer service is number one from these people. Over the last few years, I have become disenchanted with meat. It seemed like no matter what type of meat we got, or how we prepared it, it just wasn't very good. Dry, tough, and chewy - it was almost enough to make me go veggie. Thankfully we found Acme Meat Market before I made that leap! Corey and the staff at Acme are so friendly and always happy to help you out with all your meat needs. The meat we get from Acme is exactly the opposite from the meat we were buying before - it doesn't matter what type of meat we get, or how we prepare it, it is always SO good! I am not a good cook by any stretch of the imagination, but I butchered a couple of rib-eye steaks that we got from Acme (not "butchered" like Corey the butcher butchers steaks, but "butchered" like I had no business to be even touching them) and yet, they were still so tender and juicy that my husband was begging me to find out what I did to make them so good. You know its good meat, if it can make ME look like a good cook! Its definitely a bit pricier than the big grocers, but we are learning that you really do get what you pay for. I phoned ahead to ask about Bison steaks, chatted with the very friendly person and decided what I wanted, and they had my steaks cut and wrapped, and waiting for me when I arrived. Went for 1st time on a Saturday. Even though it was a very busy place, we had great service! We bought: Ultimate pork sausages (these are made in store, so these aren't always in stock), pork ribs, and beef roast. I agree with previous post, I'll never settle for grocery store meat again -Acme meat was much better tasting, and cheaper ! We'll definitely be making the 45 minute drive (one way) to Acme. I'm going to take their advice and I'll phone ahead first so they can have what I want in stock, and ready for pick up. read more

I remember going to Acme as a kid with my mom and hating every minute of it. Now, as an adult, that couldn't be further from the truth! Went to purchase some beef short ribs today as the last time I bought them at a regular grocery store, they were so fatty. The ones bought today were amazing!! Such good quality. My husband and I have bought chickens as we all steaks there before as well. It's in a cool building with Transcend Coffee and a brewery. Along with every type of meat you could think of, they also sell some spices and sauces. It's always interesting to see what they have or what local cookbook will be there. The price can sometimes be higher vs your local grocery store but the quality is amazing. I also appreciate how clean it looks. They will break down the meat right in front of you and can customize sizing. Parking can be at a premium as you park on the road but it's totally worth it. Go check out Acme! read more
