    Friday Fish Fry
    Jennifer R.

We were looking for Friday dinner options near us which brought the Acorn Grill and Terrace's Friday Fish Fry to our attention. The Acorn Grill and Terrace is located at the Northbrook Park District's golf course off of Dundee Rd. The building is brand new. The dining room is small but modern and comfortable. In the warmer months they have a patio to increase capacity. The service was friendly although it seemed like there was one Guy covering the entire restaurant. The food wasn't bad but it also wasn't good enough for us to say we'll be back for the fish fry. The meal came with 3 cod filets, fries, two hush puppies, cole slaw and tartar sauce. All for $18. I think we'll be back to try a different menu item.

Our friends asked us where we could go to eat outside. We immediately suggested Acorn. The evening was beautiful and they loved the food. #iraeats #iraeTs1

OK, the good the bad and the ugly! The good, I met a friend for happy hour drinks and they don't really have a happy hour but the cocktails were only $10 which I think is a good value. The bad, lots of people sitting outside, and some of them were smoking or vaping, which to me is disgusting. The ugly, if you're a woman and halfway attractive, there are tons of older men there that may make you feel uncomfortable. I would definitely go back because I could just ignore the men but smoking where there's food is gross and unacceptable.

Great views of the course, nice new building and good service. The food and it's presentation need help however. This place has potential if they made a few changes: 1. Prices are way too high for the amount and quality of food served. It's a golf course, not a sit down restaurant. 2. They serve the water in plastic cups with straws. Seriously? They don't have a dishwasher and glassware they can use? Not only is it wasteful with single use plastic but it just brings down the ambiance of the place. 3. The flavors of three of the four dishes we have had were lackluster and boring. This isn't a retirement home, it's a golf course and if you're going to have interesting sounding things on the menu they need to taste much better. 4. The presentation was slipshod and messy. For $14+ for sandwiches and appetizers the plates need to be neater and appetizing looking. We ordered: * Nachos - they were supposed to have a homemade cheese sauce and be "loaded" with toppings. Not really. The cheese sauce set like glue within minutes, there was not enough toppings by any stretch of the imagination and the chips were not fresh tasting - a tad stale. Very sad and not any where near worth $14. They then charge more to add chicken or beef... * Chicken Lettuce Wraps - although the chicken pieces were freshly grilled overall the dish lacked flavor and it was clunky and looked sad on the plate. Normally lettuce wraps are served with the filling in a bowl and then lettuce pieces and sauce sides separately so that the diner can make their own wrap...not here. Pre-filled romaine lettuce leaves (3 ) on smeared and messy plate with no sauce... underwhelming until salt, pepper and Tabasco(R) were added. The chicken pieces were too large as well and pre-filling the lettuce pieces made them too soft by the time we got the flavor rescuing s/p and hot sauce from the server. * Buffalo Chicken Wrap with fries. The fries were very, very good - fresh, hot and almost perfectly seasoned. The wrap was underwhelming - too dry, not enough buffalo sauce, not enough ranch, chicken was okay. Why do they need to serve the ketchup for the fries in a plastic lidded cup? Can't they either offer bottles (less waste) or little metal cups if they fear contamination of the ketchup bottles.... * Hot dog with "homemade" chips. Everything about the dog itself was fine but the chips were stale, cold, needed flavor (especially salt) and there were too many tiny pieces of chips. We were here late last summer at the opening and enjoyed the buffalo wings. $12 for 8 pieces is okay if they are large enough and they just were. Draught beer prices are too high for a place that is there to get a little more revenue out of patrons that already paid a pretty penny for a golf course that is also in need of some improvements - but that's another review. Service was professional and friendly.

Slow service but the food is good and sitting outside overlooking the course on a nice evening with a drink keeps bringing me back.

I have no complaints. I ordered the beef tallow 10 piece wing which is automatically dry rub as seasoning - my fave! I upgraded to add in a fry and beverage. The wings and mild seasoning were great. The fries were hearty and not greasy at all. I would've asked for a more crisp fry but that's it. My only "complaint" would be to give two sauces for a 10 piece wing.

I find level 2 to be perfect, has the kick I enjoy, but not overly so and blow out my taste buds. We went when they had their $5 hot chicken sandwiches in honor of National Hot Chicken day. Not surprisingly, it was very busy. They still put out good food and EXCELLENT service. Everyone was so nice and they all handled the flow of people very well. I was so impressed. One of the managers, came around to the tables to tidy up and check in on all the guests. I have to remember to come more often!

We drive past Grill House all the time, it has been in Northbrook for a long time (I just found out…read morethat it's been here for 9 years), however, this was the first time that we ever visited, and I am happy that we finally did! My husband and I wanted a quick and good dinner one Sunday recently, and we picked Grill House after I read some good reviews on Yelp.  Although it's a casual, fast-food-style restaurant, the menu is surprisingly extensive, with a wide variety of healthy Greek dishes. It was definitely helpful to look over their menu online before we visited, because the menu board inside could be a bit overwhelming.  I guess I still looked quite confused when I saw 2 kiosks in front of the ordering counter.  A staff behind the counter offered to help, and I just ordered directly with him.  Later of the evening I discovered that he's the friendly owner Gus. After placing our order at the counter, we were given a table number, and our food was delivered promptly.  I ordered a Chicken Souvlaki Plate ($17.50 at the time, it's now listed online for $18), while my husband ordered a Filet Mignon Souvlaki Plate ($25.50).  Each souvlaki plate included a soup or salad, rice and potato (1 piece), a side of veggies, and pita bread in a paper bag.  It was a generous amount of food! We both chose the lentil soup, which was served piping hot in a nice ceramic bowl with a lid. It was flavorful and comforting. My chicken souvlaki was tender and juicy, never dry, and both the rice and potato were delicious. We were both impressed with the quality and value of the meal. I ordered a lemonade, which is considered a fountain drink ($4.00) and comes with free refills, though I couldn't even finish my first glass. My husband would have ordered a glass of wine if we hadn't had plans afterward, so we were happy to see that Grill House also serves beer and wine for a future visit. The service was another highlight. Everyone was warm and welcoming; a special shout-out to Kevin, who was very attentive and checked in on us several times.  When I was taking photos around the restaurant, the owner Gus greeted me again, which was a nice personal touch. The restaurant itself was bright, clean, and inviting. There's also a pleasant patio for those who prefer to dine outdoors. We will definitely be back to try more dishes from their extensive menu.  I am glad that we finally gave Grill House a try!

The service was great they were checking on us and following up on everything and very attentive. Now let's go to the food my sister recommended the shank I opted for the pork tank I think they also have a lamp one but the pork one was really good and super tender you don't even need a knife for it you just cut it with your fork or spoon in the meat comes off the bones right away. The pasta we ordered was also good came with the sausage it was the sausage rigatoni with sausage. My sister recommended the crispy brussel sprouts she said it was really good but we opted to go for the octopus I feel like the octopus was over seasoned a bit but it was cooked perfectly really tender. Will definitely be coming back to this place to try more stuff on their menu. Happy eating!

We had made a reservation a month in advance to try a new restaurant on Father's Day. However, as…read morethe day approached, the weather forecast consistently called for thunderstorms, heavy rain, and possible flash flooding. We decided it was not a good idea to drive to an unfamiliar area in inclement weather and canceled the reservation on Friday night. We were fortunate that Social Inn is close by and is a great restaurant for celebratory dining. Best of all, they still had reservation available. As it turned out, it was just light rain the entire evening on Father's Day, but we didn't regret the change at all. Although the restaurant was not filled to capacity, it was bustling with many families celebrating Father's Day, creating a festive vibe. It's the first time that we met the owner, Daniella, who's so warm and welcoming. She invited us to choose from available tables in three different dining areas. We selected the table right by the lounge that had a large TV, homey décor, couch and cocktail table. It was also right by the big window overlooking the small and charming front patio. Our server, Chis, was very friendly, pleasant, and attentive. I ordered a Lemonade ($3), my husband and daughter each enjoyed a glass of Mer Soliel Reserve Chardonnay (2 for $26). We shared a Grilled Octopus ($22) which was cooked to perfection. The warm, lightly charred pita points paired well with the creamy and tasty beet hummus. I had a Slow Roasted Lamb Shank ($39) which was tender and full of flavors. It was a very generous portion that I shared a big piece with my husband; and still had leftovers to take home. It made a delicious lamb sandwich for my next lunch. My husband liked his Spiked White Fish ($29) so much last time that he ordered it again. Our daughter enjoyed her order of Rigatoni Sausage ($23), another generously portioned dish that she couldn't quite finish. By the end of the meal, we were too full for individual desserts, so we shared a Crème Brûlée ($8), which was the perfect sweet ending. All in all, it was a wonderful dinner. With consistent delicious dishes, warm hospitality, comfortable seating, and a convenient location, we will definitely be back again.

Then, we discovered that the McDonald's which had been on this location for decades had permanently closed! What did we do? We visited the Love's Yogurt right next to it instead. The yogurt store was empty at this off-peak time. My husband struck a conversation with Henry, who had been the owner of the store for 18 years. He was very friendly and said that Love's had opened at this location for 38 years! It was the first time that we ever visited! Why? Because when there was a McDonald's right next to a yogurt shop, we chose McDonald's, haha. I looked at their menu board and saw smoothies, and I thought they were $6.50 each. I ordered a Henry's Special Smoothie which included mango, pineapple, coconut with pineapple juice and Love's French Vanilla Yogurt. My husband ordered a small vanilla yogurt for $4.05. The receipt came up to $13.77, with no itemization, just one total amount. Then I politely asked Henry, and found out that Henry's Special was $8.50. Henry's Special did not have a price on the small smoothie menu, and it was not on the wall menu board. When I looked at the picture that I took of the menu board at home, I noticed that all the other smoothies seemed to be originally $6.50, but at some points in time the prices were manually changed with an 8 written over 6, and the one on the top line still looked like a 6 to me from a distance. Forgive my less than perfect vision. I found that kind of funny. Before Henry went inside to prepare my smoothie, he was brushing away some debris on the countertop with his bare hands. I did not see him wearing gloves the entire time. Well, like a Chinese saying, "if you don't see it, just consider it being clean", haha. The Henry's Special was pretty good. It's creamy, sweet but not too sweet, and every sip had coconut bits in it. I just wish that the mango flavor could be a little stronger. Husband said that his yogurt was standard. It was a surprise that they also sell other savory items such as soups, salads, sandwiches, and wraps. The shop was clean and rather nostalgic looking. Henry said that McDonald's next door closed because the landlord increased their rent 2 to 3 folds. He said that they still have 20 months left on their lease, and hope that the rent would not increase too much. Otherwise, he would have to retire too. I hope not.
