    Biscuits and gravy

This is Highwood's breakfast equivalent to "Cheers," a friendly, casual diner where everyone "knows your name." Who is the "moron" breakfast sandwich named for, I wonder? I ordered the biscuits and gravy with a side of home fries and onions. My companion ordered the two egg breakfast with "Goofy Donna" (lo carb) toast. Our food was fine. The home fries were a little overdone but tasted good. We added the cook's homemade hot sauce to give it a little kick. Goofy Donna is on to something -- that toast was great! The secret ingredient here is the service. The patrons greeted us with smiles and greetings and our server (owner?) set us at ease, made multiple passes with the coffee pot, and made us feel welcome. If you want to get the pulse of the town, hear the latest gossip, all while having tasty, simple diner fare, I think this is the place to start.

My husband and I absolutely love Sandy's. We bike from our home to have breakfast here on the weekends. I recommend sitting at the bar only because that's the only place I enjoy sitting. The owner and the rest of the staff are amazing people with great personalities. They are quick to take your order and bring out your food. I never feel forgotten there as they are always checking up on us and topping off the coffee. I always feel at home here. I think that's why I keep going to Sandy's. It reminds me of the local diners at home in Nashville. The place is always clean and we usually happen to run into a neighbor. The food... has never disappointed me here. My husband usually orders the moron and I am fan of their omelettes. Great diner food. The moron though, it's the bread. The sandwich is great all around. I highly recommend. Their omelettes are always fluffy and I change up my topics all of time. The ingredients are fresh. If you're in Highwood in the morning, don't skip this classic diner.

This says it all. Best place the ever. Corned beef hash. Omelette. Fresh. Hot. Great service.

It isn't often I'm in Highwood looking for breakfast, so I've never discovered this gem until now. Though we stopped in only 15 minutes before closing, the women behind the counter served us with warm smiles, efficient service, and delicious food. Both my son and I had egg white omelets, we both agreed some of the best we've had. I'll find a reason to return to this quaint diner, it's the perfect breakfast spot.

Come to Sandy's knowing what to expect, and you will love it! Sandy's is a true diner. A greasy spoon. They serve eggs and bacon, and it is really freaking good! While they have delicious food, this is not your $50 farm-to-table omelet topped with organic hummus from heirloom chickpeas. This is classic breakfast fare done right. Friendly service and great food for an affordable price. That's five stars to me!

We've driven by this restaurant SO many times and have yet to come by until now. What a fun…read moreexperience we had! When you pull up to the plaza you would think anything of the restaurant but when you go inside it's a fun colorful experience. When we were seated we were brought waters and menus. We took some time to look at the menus but ultimately took our server's suggestions on drinks. I ended up having a virgin Rose Colored Glasses drink and absolutely loved it. The drinks were large and I felt they were worth the price. My husband got an old fashioned. To start we got the cheese curds, and when I tell you these cheese curds still live rent free in my mind I kid you not. They were so good, the cheese was battered in a tempura batter with a truffle cream sauce and it made for such an incredible dish! For our entrees we got the pork chop with the brown butter sauces and bavette with a red wine reduction. The pork chop was great with the brown butter you just gotta make sure you mix it up, and the red wine was a bit too salty for me but it was okay because I ended up loving the steak by itself! For our sides we got the grilled zucchini under the snacks option instead of the sides option because I wanted all the fixings. It was a great choice! The fixings really made and I could eat a plate of that and just be happy (with the cheese curds of course). The wiped potatoes were great as well. Now I was going to pass on dessert because I was SO full already, but twist my arm when you tell me the cookie dough ice cream is a must try. It had real cookie dough chunks on top and bottle and the vanilla ice cream was not boring vanilla, I ate almost half of that bowl and couldn't stop. The chocolate chip cookie dough was house made and it was the perfect blend of sweet and salty that tied the whole ice cream bowl together. Can't recommend that enough as well. All in all, we had a great experience! It was so fun to see so many regulars and so many new folks who came in to dine at the same time as us and we all peeked to see who ordered what before we ordered and got some great recs as you can see! Can't wait to come back to enjoy my favorites and more!

So the first time we were here it was amazing but this time it was subpar at best. Don't know if…read morethey have a new chef or what but the food was not good. Started with the bread and crabcakes and the bread was amazing and definitely fresh but the crabcakes needed more crab and flavor. Basically everything needed more flavor. We also ordered a bottle of wine which our server struggled with and never came over to refill the glasses. Then the entree's; my husband's bolognese was bland and desperately needed at least salt and pepper. Then the real problem was my steak which was supposed to be medium came out well done and then classically when it was recooked came out rare or medium rare if you are being generous. Then the waitress said she would check back and she didn't so I had to get salt myself from the server station which is kinda ridiculous especially when paying $54 for a steak that already has no seasoning which is why they offer free sauces which makes a lot of sense now. When she finally did come back I said it was under but not waiting for it to be overcooked again so reheating it at home with the cold side of mushrooms I ordered WITH my steak. I did talk to the manager after and he was not really helpful or sympathetic and I was really talking to him so in my review I could say well at least management cares but that is not the case here. I gave 2 stars because their drinks are good and the ambiance is nice and the hostess was super friendly and was the star employee after our visit. Also we paid for everything even the cold mushrooms and over/under cooked steak! At minimum also remake my mushrooms or comp them. Would I eat here again hopefully not but it is locationally desirable for me and my in-laws and have lots of GF options so might have to and if I do hopefully they will have made things better.

Service and atmosphere: My husband and I decided to try going on a date to Abigail's based on a…read morerecommendation from a colleague who is local to the area. We were able to get last minute reservations for 8:30 on a Friday, which was surprising given how extremely busy this place is on the weekends. We arrived on time and were seated quickly without a wait, which was another impressive moment given how packed the restaurant was. Dining here is like dining in the city on the weekends, with a majority of the crowd tending toward older groups of friends or families without children. There was one family of four who brought their child with them, but generally we saw couples and groups of friends. Dress seems standardly smart casual. Food: The menu here is organized into three sections: small plates, mid-size meals, and entree-sized portions. Keep in mind the mid-sized plates can be on the larger side, so the tapas-style menu can be deceiving. We ordered the steak and frites and branzino as our mains, with polenta fries on the side. For apps, we ordered the butternut squash ravioli and were greeted with complimentary cheesy biscuits to start. We finished our meal with the olive oil cake, covered in raspberries. Based on what we ordered, we'd give this place a 4/5, simply because the steak my husband ordered was a tiny bit tough and overcooked (ordered medium rare, received medium well). The cut was a strip or a ribeye, so unfortunately on the tougher side, and less flavorful. My fish was nicely seared but the cannellini beans that were paired with the branzino just didn't do it for me. Branzino is a white fish that tolerates spice and garnishes very well, so it could have benefited from some more complex flavors. That said, we will be back for the ravioli. I'd wager that it is the best thing on the winter menu (this place rotates menu selections somewhat frequently). It was creamy, complex, and soft, with a delicious umami sauce. The olive oil cake we shared for dessert was also very delicious, moist and well-paired with simple cream and berries. Nice and simple but did the trick without being overwhelming or cloyingly sweet. The biscuits are also a nice touch: soft and buttery, not dry, and baked fresh. Overall, I'd say that veggie and pasta dishes are the way to go here, and potentially the fish if it is paired with a more complex side in the future. We look forward to future menus!
