By now, you likely already know that I spend a good amount of time on trails as part of my activism and traveling by wheelchair. I look for lengthy trails that are well connected to city areas where I can make appearances for fundraising, awareness, and outreach. The Nickel Plate Trail goes through cities including Kokomo, Peru, and Rochester. This allowed me to stop in each city and do some significant outreach. If you visit the Peru area, for example, you'll see a fairly new accessible park for which my Tenderness Tour (the name of my event) made a donation. I've built ongoing relationships from the connections I made on the trail and actually still work quite a bit in both the Rochester and Peru areas. I've spoken in Maconaquah Schools, an area not far from the trail. I actually thought I'd already written this review, but when I discovered a photo from my trip that I wanted to post I realized I'd never actually written this review. If there's a major deficit on this trail, it's a significant lack of restroom availability. As someone who was largely traveling by wheelchair, that's a serious need and it definitely caused some hassles. The only place where they have truly available restrooms are in Peru - there's a trailhead/parking area at the First Bank of Berne that offers nearby public restrooms. Other than that, you definitely have to leave the trail to find anything - and you'll be somewhat lucky if you do. For 37 miles of trail, restrooms just plain make sense and the lack of restrooms take this from a 5-star to a 4-star trail. Otherwise, this is a beautiful trail and I'd be stunned if you don't see wildlife on it. Town highlights include: Rochester, Indiana is known as "The Round Barn Capital of the World." It has Lake Manitou (beautiful). Grab lunch at The Dam Landing (They sponsored my Tenderness Tour). Rochester is a small, friendly town. Macy is a cute small town that was developed in 1860 along with the railroad in the area. It was originally known as Lincoln, however, they had to change their name because there was already a nearby Lincoln (word didn't travel fast in 1860). Deedsville is, well, a small town. I like to pretend it's named after Mr. Deeds, but I'm just pretending. I suppose it could be named after a Mister Deeds. Peru is also a very cool city. It's known as the "Circus Capital of the World." It was the birthplace of Cole Porter. You don't know Cole Porter? Go look him up. I'll wait. Back? This is also home to the Miami Indians (This is a Native American tribe - NOT a sports team. Geez. Get with it.). The independent film Little Big Top was shot here. Bunker Hill's a great little town and home to Maconaquah Schools along with Grissom Air Museum. There's also a lot of auto racing around here. Miami is an unincorporated town - whenever I wheel through it, I have my friend blare Will Smith's "Miami." I don't think he was singing about this one, though. Kokomo is known as the "City of Firsts" as the city has had an extraordinary history with technical innovations. My outreach history is kind of weak here, but I like visiting the city. You should go to the Elwood Haynes Museum, though I can't lie - it makes me think of Elwood Blues. At various points, you can connect into other trails. They're also working on expanding Nickel Plate. In many ways, it reminds me of the Cardinal Greenway minus actual restrooms (Can you tell the restroom thing bugs me?). The trail is for the most part fairly level with gentle inclines/declines and really nice paving the entire way. When you're in the cities, you'll definitely experience people along the way. You'll also get your fair share of rural trail, though it's still nicely paved. There's no question this is one of Indiana's best trails. I look forward to returning to it in the near future.

ok-i have to come out and say right off the bat that i am not an artist, nor do i work with…read moreglass--although i did work at a company that did a lot of glass walls--think 1/2 inch glass--but this is a lot different. my girlfriend is the artist and works with glass and she and i had a discussion about coming here. i am totally enamored with the tour, the production and the information presented. what really blew my mind away is the trememdous customer service attitude that i witnesses today. she needs something specific, and the great care that was shown her in finding particular colors of glass really impressed me. too often it seems that in a lot of places the care of the customer is overlooked. not here--by a long shot. and you gotta take the tour even if you are not looking to buy or work with glass. it is fantastic to watch and i suppose in the oven room on a very cold winter day would be a great place to be but even so today was delightful even with the heat outside. thanks again for the time and care that everyone showed us today in trying to find something special. and yes, the drive was worth it.

Kokomo Opalescent Glass is America's oldest glass manufacturing company. They began manufacturing…read morecolorful sheet glass in 1888 and, today, produce 75% of the world's stained glass. I took a tour of their factory today. Tours are available weekdays by calling their office. The 45 minute tour costs $6 for adults and $3 for students. The tour starts and ends in their small gift shop. We visited and saw demonstrations of molten glass moving from furnaces to make sheet glass. We learned about how they mix colors and recycle waste glass. We visited their warehouse and learned about the different qualities of glass and how the glass is shipped. Finally, we saw artisans making decor pieces from the glass. Our tour guide was friendly and interesting. I had trouble hearing her in the furnace room, but still was able to follow. Closed shoes must be worn (no sandals). They provide safety glasses. We found ample parking in their lot. Restrooms are available on site. The buildings are ancient and interesting. The furnace building holds a beehive furnace that was interesting, but is no longer operational. Worth a visit to this Indiana treasure.

We were pleasantly surprised at how nice the campground is and well maintained. There is a pool, a lake in the back for fishing, 2 kids parks, a mini putting area, and lots of open field. No noise from traffic, you are close to Hartford city if you need anything (just don't go to the McDonald's). Lots of other campers here that seem to have annual stays. We choose spot 108 because it was in the back and pretty secluded, no one else ended up staying at the closer sites and we had the area to ourselves. Picnic tables and firepits at the sites. They also have buddy campsites. We didn't use the wifi but it was accessible. They also have a rec area and have campsite chat nights, games, and all the fun stuff. Great place and would stay again!

Place is a dump. Nasty owner! Pure trailer trash living here & by the looks of many live here full…read moretime. They have porches, mini barns, & fences all around us at site 41. Sites too close together. Site was on gravel not even a level concrete. People behind us were taking our space with their mini barn literally on our back bumper. Boyfriend Dan Ottinger booked us 2 nights here but we couldn't get their til 2nd day due to a flat tire and it was a mud pit on arrival and our site was slammed right next to neighbors both on the side and one behind us with mini barns infringing on site 41's space. Do NOT recommend this place at all especially this no privacy site. Oh and the uneducated owner lady has my boyfriend's name spelled as Otteringer on the paperwork. Such a hillbilly! Do NOT waste your $. Not worth $49/nite. Not worth 49 cents for this!

It also didn't say if the parks department is making the upgrade or if the neighborhood is raising funds. Either way, it is a decent park now, and could become one of the best in the city! I have now used the services of Ride & Leather for adjusting the seat on two different motorcycles…read more This shop still knows what Customer Service is! They will work with your seat until you are satisfied no matter how many times it takes to get it how you want it. On the first bike, I had them scoop out the seat to give me a little bit of a back rest (as there is no after market back rests available for that model). On the second bike, I had them narrow the front part of the seat so I could reach the ground better. In both cases, after the work was done, the seat was put back together in such a way that a casual observer would never know work was done on it. In addition to adjusting factory installed seats, they can insert gel in the seat to give greater comfort, but I do not have personal experience with that service. They also do sheep skin seat covers and a variety of other custom seat work. They are true artists. The shop has all kinds of leather apparel, leather motorcycle luggage, leather gloves and much more. I would highly recommend these fine folks. In this day and age where Customer Service is almost an extinct animal, they treat their customers right!

If you're going to have a really industrial heritage, it's really pretty cool to try to capitalize…read moreon that in a way that's good for the community. That's precisely what the city of Kokomo has done with the Industrial Heritage Trail, a just under six-mile rail-trail that links together historic industrial sites in Kokomo's history. The trail runs through downtown Kokomo while also connecting to the much larger Nickel Plate Trail and Kokomo's really cool Wildcat Creek Walk of Excellence. You'll catch such sites as: The Kokomo Rubber Company, which produced the first pneumatic rubber tire in the U.S. Haynes Automobile Company, which introduced America to the auto. Both Chrysler and Kokomo Opalescent Glass are near the trail (which also has a cool piece of public art). The trail includes historic markers and has places to rest along the trail. As I'm a wheelchair user, I can affirm the trail is wheelchair friendly. It's for the most part a level trail. It's also primarily an urban trail. The Nickel Plate Depot is the primary trailhead for the trail and you can find parking typically around it or along the streets. The Industrial Heritage Trail is not what I'd call a destination trail, though Kokomo has a nice enough system of trails that it would be worth spending the day in Kokomo to try them out. The Nickel Plate alone could easily be called a destination trail and is quite beautiful.

There are a number of historic information signs along the trail talking about groundbreaking industry from Kokomo's past such as Kokomo Rubber Company who made the first inflatable tires and Haynes Automobile Company. The Industrial Heritage Trail connects to the Nickel Plate trail, so I used it to add another 6 miles to my ride. There's a lot of rail history along the route. There's a large depot that now has restaurants as well as some trackside equipment. There are a couple of nice parks and the trail runs right through downtown past the courthouse. It's a nice extension to the Nickel Plate.
