I was nervous that my cart would not have been able to be fixed and that I had to buy a new one, but I was truly impressed that Sonia fixed it within 5 minutes! I love their key copy services. They're quick and efficient and the keys work on the first try. You don't even have to take them off your keychain for them to be able to copy them! They are have keychain charms and labels for less than a dollar to go with your new set of key copies. AND I found a plant I have been on the hunt for almost two years! The toothache plant. I really enjoy shopping at this store - all the associates are friendly, helpful and freely offer advice. The layout is organized and it's easy to find what you're looking for, but if you can't find something it seems an associate is always nearby to help. The cashiers are quick and efficient, and a new one shows up quickly when the line gets long so there's never a long wait. You can also order ahead and do "curbside" pickup. There is a separate building dedicated to grilling supplies and accessories. They have a large and wide selection of pellets, briquettes, wood chips and a mind-bending wall of seasonings. The management/owner of this Ace Store on Walnut Creek CA need to work on their Staff. It is hit or miss in customer service. There are a few employees that go out of their way to help customers, then there are others that make you feel they are doing you a favor to help you, this is especially related to staff working as cashiers. They seem bored and not understanding that Amazon and Home Depot are out there. "Friendly Service" , a "smile" and "thank you" would help.... The store is well stocked, selection is outstanding and prices are reasonable, but the staff seem not to care. Many of the staff don't really care if you buy something or not. So sad... I have to say, this was the single most unfriendly Ace I have ever been to. Not subjectively but objectively: I was here early on a Friday morning, walked past an otherwise unoccupied cashier - no greeting (no smile, no eye contact, no "Good Morning" nothing), and as I wandered around the unfamiliar store looking for what I needed, no offers of assistance. I practically had to step IN FRONT on someone to ask for the last item I was looking for despite several folks in red vests. At checkout same cashier didn't ask for my phone number for Ace Rewards. When queried, she responded that the transaction was complete and offered a half hearted cancellation and rering. I did decline. I wish this was an anomaly but I was in this store with my son about two weeks ago to a similar response. The only competitive advantage that locally owned hardware stores have over big box stores and Amazon is service. I live in Hawaii (Oahu) and have a home in Phoenix --- Barry's Ace Hardware in Phoenix is amazing. My girlfriend chose a 25-foot hose, but we thought the 50-foot version might be better. Got to her place, before opening the package, double-checked with tape measure, determined 25-foot ideal, less for her to drag around, coil up. But i misplaced the receipt. However, the gracious, upbeat Medium Bob tells me bring it back to return, they can look up the transaction, we can get the 25-foot hose. Wahoo! We are longtime customers of Ace in Walnut Creek. My husband loves Ace so much that we joke that when we retire, we need to move to a town with an Ace. We had a horrible experience with them and will not shop with them again. We had our garage doors, fascia, and gutters painted Sherwin Williams iron ore using paint we bought from this store. We bought one can to paint our garage doors in late March. We then bought another can for the fascia and gutter work in April. Both times, my husband told them very specifically Sherwin Williams iron ore and gave the woman behind the paint counter the paint number (7069). He even showed her a photo of the label of the first can to make absolutely certain it was the right color. Well...turns out it wasn't. The second can said the same paint name and number as the first "Iron Ore (SW 7069)" but had a different formula, which no one noticed (why Ace has two formulas for the same paint color is beyond our understanding). My husband, who relied on the expertise of these paint professionals, gave the can to our painter who proceeded to paint the fascia and gutters of our two-story home. I checked on the work at the end for the day and noticed that the fascia and garage doors didn't quite match. The painters weren't done though, and I figured it needed a second coat or time to dry (the fascia was originally brown and the new paint job had a brown tint to it). Our painter needed more paint, and my husband went to get a third can. He showed the person behind the counter the photo of the label of the first can and asked her to make sure it was the same that we had purchased before. She looked up our purchase history and noticed that the formulas on cans 1 and 2 of the SAME EXACT paint color iron ore 7069 were indeed different. At that point, we realized that the painter had spent an entire work day painting with the wrong paint color from Ace. That same afternoon, my husband came to the store and talked to the owner. After the owner spoke to the paint manager, he agreed that the associate who had mixed the paint had made a mistake. The owner asked my husband how much it would cost to repaint, and my husband told him that it was probably around $1000-$1500. They agreed that my husband would get an invoice from our painter and bring it the next day. The owner lamented over his employee's costly $1500 mistake and their "computer" problem. When my husband came to the store with the invoice, he was surprised to be told by a manager that the best they could do was refund us $50 (the owner was not there but this was apparently coming from the owner). He told my husband that the painter should have noticed they were different paint colors EVEN THOUGH IT WAS THE SAME COLOR BY NAME AND NUMBER. The owner then called my husband that evening and told him the same thing, this time making a "final" offer of $150 gift card. He scoffed at the $900 invoice even though we had three people out here working all day. It's sad that they cannot own up to their mistakes and make their customers whole. Instead, they'd rather tell us to go kick rocks. We'll be filing a lawsuit in small claims court. read more

This is one of the last stores around here where you can get individualized help for free. I visited Ace yesterday. I needed help putting in a tiny battery into the fob of my Camry. I also needed help in putting a jumbo battery into my jumbo flashlight. Finally, I needed help finding the right water filter for my refrigerator. A young salesclerk, Kendrick Sanders, took care of each one of these projects with courtesy and skill. He was so very kind and did not make me feel as though he was doing me a great favor, even though he was. A customer cannot get such help at Home Depot or Lowe's. Please support this local business. I like this Ace, the paint selection is good and they have a ton of stuff from garden to household to hardware. The staff is helpful and kind. I don't love all the smelly fragrance stuff in the middle of the store, but I'm sure some people are into it. They have some home decor items so this is a good place to get a gift if needed. The only downside (one star off) is that the plants I got here didn't do so well and I have a green thumb. I think they may have had a disease and I don't feel like bringing them back to complain tbh. The plants are also a bit pricy. It's a good Ace for the area. read more

Amazing customer service. The staff really go out of their way to help and are knowledgeable. I had ordered something online for my garden and was having trouble to assemble it. I brought it into the site, thinking I needed a different sort of wrench or screws. They not only helped me find the correct wrench, but they also kindly assembled it for me. Truth be told, my favorite shopping experiences are grocery and utility. Ace Hardware is much more of a standard material supply store and has so much more. I often can my own jams, sauces, etc. and love the classic Ball brand. My family and friends are jerks about returning jars, so I go to Ace. They have the best prices on canning jars. I checked online and they were available, so I went. My goodness, this store was adorable. Easy to find products and a huge assortment of housewares. I was there this morning and I had a very unpleasant experience, I was looking for a drill auger and this associate ( short guy at garden department) was impatient and rude. I got there and this guy ( short guy)was talking with another associate "I think" I said good morning and I noticed right away this short guy was annoyed because I asked about the part I was looking for, he didn't say good morning back also. He took for ever to find it "sort of ",he asked on the radio where was it and I think nobody knew. I was looking for a 24" , 3" wide auger and they only had 12"long . I said to this guy I checked the website first and it says you guys have a few available on the store at that point I noticed this guy was irritated with my response, i he said " if you stop talking I will explain". I used this auger a couple of hours and got bend , it is useless now, for a very overprice tool $50. Please be aware of this drill auger , it not worth it. I don't want to waste my time and go back to this store and try to return it. I writing this review not because the bad quality tool ,it is because the unprofessional, rude and bad customer service or this associate. I greeted other employees and they were friendly. Definitely not coming back to this store , next time I'll order what I need though Amazon. A coupon brought us to this Ace Hardware after we first moved into the neighbourhood and it is SO PLEASANT! As a first time homeowner, I often have a partial idea of what I need to complete a job and often am missing some vital terminology. The staff at Ace Hardware are 1) very easy to track down and 2) incredibly helpful. Somehow the store, despite being much smaller than a typical Home Depot, has almost everything the average person will need. Their prices are a little higher than other locations but what I pay for in additional cost, I make up for in time and general lack of frustration - I can be in and out in ten minutes. At Home Depot, it'd take that long just to get into the store and then I'd be meandering through poorly organised shelves across several acres of warehouse space only to find that they didn't have the one item I need in stock. On the coupon front, definitely download the Ace Hardware app and sign up, we seem to get an additional $5 coupon every month or so, which is a nice bonus. Oh, and don't forget to check out the model train that patrols the store! read more

I come in here constantly and had regrettable experience with a rep today. I had to return an item and as a business owner myself I never allow patrons to walk the store with returns. So I waited in the return/checkout line and when I get to the front I explain I need to swap out that item with a new item. The rep, "Big Bob", responded "you should have got that before getting in line." I explained how I was concerned carrying around a return item and he said "yeah we can debate that concern once I take care of these people who were in line behind you." Once I got to the front to talk with Big Bob he says "yeah well it's not my idea so it's not on me"z I have dealt with other smart-alecks in this store with snippy attitudes. Seeing as Big Bob was just a trainee I guess management trains bad attitudes from the top down. I love the ease and convenience of the store being 2 min from my house, but I also value customer service and I guess that's what you get when dealing with big name companies that don't care about the quality of their work. read more
