I do not leave negative reviews, but in this case, I am hoping to save others their time and money. I had an old picture of my grandfather and great grandfather that I wanted re-printed as well as an audio cassette of my mother interviewing my grandfather about his life. Both have been truly disappointing. The picture reprint is terrible quality, completely different coloring, and less clear than the original. I went back twice, to have them try to get a closer match. That was some improvement, but it did not at all match the original. I ended up paying for the pictures (with a discount for my trouble) and taking them to a different lab which was able to match the picture exactly in the first go. When I went back to a one to show them the quality of reprint I expected, and to request a refund, they were unable to do so and directed me to a manager, who I could email from their website. As for the tape recording, I received a call that the tape needed to be repaired for an additional fee. No problem there. After about a week, and a $43 charge, I excitedly brought the digital file home, only to find there was nothing more than 45 seconds of recording. Nobody mentioned how little time they were able to transfer at any point in this experience! I returned to the store, and they said they would try again, at which time they were able to get a full hour of recording. Wonderful! Well, what was to be a special birthday present for my mom, was a complete other family's recording, not my tape! So, FOR A THIRD TIME, I brought the tape back, for them to try again. Once again, I went home, only to find under a minute of recording. I called explaining my disappointment and requesting a refund. I was told the manager would call back, but I never received a call. I have now gone in to request a refund, and was directed to email the manager. The other company I used for my picture reprint, (which, in the first try, came back exactly how I would expect!) said they would absolutely let a client know that there was only a short amount of recording, before proceeding to create a digital file and would not charge anything unless the client wanted to move forward. Even then, they would only charge for the amount of tape they could transfer, not a while "blank" tape. I will update this review if and when I hear back. But for now, this has been an incredibly disappointing experience- Most disappointing is that none of this was ready for my mom's 85th birthday, which was the whole point of it all. Last minute decision to have a 50 year old cassette tape transferred to CD. I dropped the tape off 12/22 4pm, explaining the age and degraded sound quality of the tape. He said the would try to do some enhancement when transferring it, though it might not be ready until after the new year. Understood, as this was right before the holiday (though I would have loved the to share the CD with my family over the holidays). He gave me a price and I paid in advance. I received a call from A1 12/23 2:35pm....the CD was ready! This made my day. The CD sounds great and listening with my family was priceless. read more

I needed a somewhat local lab to get my film processed as I do not like shipping my rolls of film to labs further down the state or out of state. Found A1 Photo & Video Lab and couldn't be happier. Had four rolls processed and it took less than two days to get the negatives back. Staff was also patient and friendly to deal with. I live around 25 min away from here, but it's worth the drive, especially to support these kinds of businesses. The plaza they are located in is also quite nice. I'm giving this establishment 3 stars based on their business practices. The work they do is stellar. However, when we dropped off several boxes of photos and videos to be transferred, they we're unable/unwilling to give us any kind of estimate. We assumed this would be an expensive task upwards of a few thousand dollars. After several months of no one reaching out during the process to give us any indication of approaching dollar amounts, we finally received one call that our order was ready to be picked up. Upon arrival, we were told the amount due exceeded $11,000. Had we been informed we had reached a certain threshold during this process, we would have been educated enough to know what we were looking at in the end and could make a decision regarding going forward since we were not given any kind of estimate from the beginning. Edited to add the owner did end up giving us about $1000 off in the end. We appreciate the expertise of this business. However the owner needs a lesson in considerate business practices. read more

A1 does excellent work! A1 made copies of pictures from a 1947 wedding album and several old family photos including ones needing restoration. The copies were amazing! A1 also were able to restore a digital photo of low resolution and the copy looks amazingly clear and detailed. I would highly recommend A1 photo and video Lab. read more

What an amazing experience! I had an old 1930s photo I wanted reproduced that was an odd size, long and rectangular. It was frecked with dark spots. I was just hoping to have it reproduced but Ben at A 1 Photo & Video Lab was able to remove all of the spotty imperfections and make it look like digital perfection. I was blown away! My husband took in 3 vhs tapes to have turned into dvds. Gave them the tapes on a Friday, was told they'd be ready by Wednesday and we would get a call. That day came and went. And on the following Friday he gave them a call, and at first they couldn't even find what he gave them. Took several minutes to find the order just to be told they hadn't even gotten to it yet. I called a couple days later to figure out what was going, they had sent the tapes to their Berkeley location to get done! No one asked permission to do that. Not even a courtesy call to let us know what they were doing. By the end of it or stuff was 2 weeks post the promise date, with only $30 taken of for the inconvenience. My honey and I needed passport photos taken to complete our passport renewal paperwork so we can travel out of the country for our honeymoon. Since the post office passport services aren't available on Saturdays, I suggested we stop in here. Our $10 passport/ID photos were ready in 5 minutes. The helpful man working there is also available for notary, fingerprinting and, of course, photo related services. I have driven a long way to this place to have a good 2 by 2 passport shot after I found Walgreens and Fedex do the worst job. After paying $28 for 4 pictures I found out the picture needs to be rotate for 4 degrees. The owner keeps saying that my shoulder is up and down, so this is his job to arrange the scene and that's why I came to him. At the end the other personal rotate the picture and give me new pictures, at least my head is straight but shoulders are worst. Where is the costumer service? read more

I finally got around to converting my last VHS to DVD. A1 Photo did a great job and was very reasonable. Great customer service.

Poor communication. I felt that this company was misleading about the pricing estimate. When I inquired about Hi8 transfers, I heard "$20 per tape", to which I said out loud, to confirm: "So, about $200 for 9 tapes?", to which the clerk responded with a "yes", and a nod. At pick up, I got a bill for $445... turns out this is because they charge differently when you provide an external hard drive and opt for digital files. Great. Silly me for thinking that that would be cheaper and easier than transferring to DVDs. I felt it was sneaky for them not to mention that the option I chose would drastically alter the initial estimate/understanding by as much as it did. I think it should've also been communicated to me that the actual work would take place at the Berkeley store 20 miles away. The entire reason I chose a local (Concord, Ca) service/location was because I didn't want to risk my tapes getting lost in a shuffle. To be fair, in the end the tapes were not lost, and, in fact, they were transferred successfully. My disappointment with this business comes down to a communication failing that led to me feeling hustled. Had I known the accurate figures, I would've just spent $140 on the device through amazon to do the transfer myself. And yes, I certainly could and should have asked more questions getting exact figures, which is why I just bit the bullet and paid the charge without protest in the store. Lesson learned. Just passing this experience along in case it helps others stay informed and wary. read more
