We had old super eight film converted to digital. The conversion is very poor, barely recognizable and very dark. I acknowledge the film wasn't great, but at least we could see who was in it and what was going on. i have a canon point and shoot. it's a hand me down from a family member and i've had it for the last few years. it's gone on numerous places and adventures with me. the lens is having issues. because of how old and how important it is, I was willing to pay someone to fix it for me. so Mikes Camera being the closest camera repair store to me, even though it's 30 minute drive for me. [[HIGHLIGHT]]i called preemptively to make sure they would service it before i drove over. "i have a point and shoot that is having a lens issue. you guys do camera repairs right?" they said yes and i can stop by the shop for them to look at it![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] i drive over and wait a couple minutes to be helped. when i am helped, i set my camera down, and the worker says "i can't service your camera, canon has a 5 year service window and your camera is 2007? 2008?" you didn't think to mention that a major camera maker has a small service window, as many other camera companies probably have. you don't think to ask that on the phone, saving me the 30 mins there. 30 mins back to home? i was completely prepared to pay 35$+ for them to just spray some compressed air on my lens to release it and allow the lens to close. just as long as i could insure that i would be able to use it again. instead, i now wasted my afternoon and have to fix it myself. the best advice they gave me was to get a new camera? the whole point is its a family camera, it has memories, it does the job! [[HIGHLIGHT]]the staff was nice about it.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] maybe shame on me for not knowing the service window on my camera i've never had issues with. but maybe as experts, they could have thought to mention or ask about it when i called preemptively. read more

I was in need of passport photos. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I called when they opened as I not only needed passport photos taken, but asked if I could print out passport photos with a file from my phone. They were a bit hesitant, but were open to me bringing it in to see what they can do.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The door is always locked and someone has to let you in. A bit strange, but makes sense with all the expensive equipment and accessories they have. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Isabel greeted me and asked what I needed. I said passport photos of myself and if I could print passport-style photos with an image I had on my phone. She said we could try and if so, it would still be full price. I was totally fine with that.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We did that part first and it was pretty seamless with scanning a QR code with my phone, uploading and Isabel did some magic to get those printed. I took my photo and that was processed. I looked around while waiting. [[HIGHLIGHT]]All in all, pretty cool spot. It is such a well-organized store and carries everything needed for all kinds of DSLRs. There was a time when I really needed a CF card and all the electronics stores I thought to check or call didn't carry it in stock. If I knew this store existed within a 20 mile radius of me it wouldn't have been a problem! They carry all the different kinds of electronic storage cards in stock as well as all kinds of batteries required by DSLRs. I also came to ask about flashes and the guy I spoke to was very knowledgeable, answering all my questions easily and very clearly. He had a professional, straightforward, no-nonsense kind of attitude, making my visit short and sweet! Mike's Camera, Pleasant Hill Useless store. Went there to buy a rubber washer for my SmallRig® mini tripod with L-bracket. The threaded 1/4" screw hole in my Arlo Pro security camera is too shallow for the standard thumb 1/4" screw in the L-bracket. Therefore, I need a rubber spacer designed to fill the gap to keep tight and secure. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The store personnel looked at me with blank stares and told me to go to Ace Hardware get any old washer.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Nonsense. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I told the store clerks that the exact product is available on Amazon.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I mentioned that I thought I'd make the trip across town to this brick-and-mortar shop - a total waste of gas and time.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I did not like the attitudes of staff, including the security dude at the front door.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I would not shop at this store for any camera or accessory. read more

I have been going to Mike's Camera for over 10 years. And that's why I won't give one star. Because I've always had great success here. And it's not about the shop. Today I was approached by a man asking if I needed help, I told him I was getting back into developing film, it's been years, and I didn't see any fixer. He couldn't find any either, so he took me and all the things I was going to purchase to the counter and what I thought was him trying to help, turned into him trying to convince me it was not cost effective to develop film myself. He said I should sign up for their "smile" program and save $30 on getting 5 rolls developed, which cost $150 btw. He kept telling me "you don't even have everything here" and tried pressuring me to purchase a $50 dark room bag saying it's more expensive everywhere else. It's literally $20 on amazon. He said "go ahead and open up that developer box, theres a lot more in there than you think". He told me to scan the QR code, look at all that instruction (a whole 2 pages). (I literally read manuals for a living as a technician so this was comical). He asked me 1000 questions about what equipment I have, if any, how I plan on scanning my photos, how basically I was making a huge mistake and should just have them develop for me. I let him talk at me and ask me questions for far too long. BECAUSE IM FAR TOO NICE. I realize this. Stuff like this gives me HUGE social anxiety because I didn't ask for his opinion, I asked for help finding what I needed! Not ONCE did he ask my intentions or experience. I told him it wasn't about saving money for me, I like to develop, he would have known that if he asked. This brought his tone down sliiigghhhttllyyy but I was LIVID. I wanted to CHECK OUT AND LEAVE, not be mansplained to by a stranger. I'm an experienced photographer, both professionally and recreationally with years of experience developing film. I could not imagine if I walked in there, an excited person wanting to learn to develop, not knowing anything, and this is the treatment you receive, I would walk away never wanting to develop again! I write this to warn new photographers wanting to learn the art, I would hate to see someone talked out of learning something so fun. Go for the film prices, don't stay for the customer service. read more

I came into the store a couple weeks ago looking for the Canon SX740 HS camera. They didn't have what I was looking for but Reza was able to give me a few alternative options they had available, one being the Canon Powershot G7X Mark III (which is quite rare to find). As I was deciding on whether to purchase the G7X, Shawn and Reza gave me a thorough explanation between the differences of both cameras, as well as the differences of the G7X versions. Ultimately, I decided on purchasing the G7X since I also had been eyeing it for a few years now. It's not easy, considering all the new camera technology and the numerous models, to troubleshoot a solution when a customer needs an answer to a camera problem. I know a lot about cameras, but I was very frustrated! Lucky, the Manager at Mike's, Pleasant Hill, Andrew, is not only a Master of camera gear but a nice guy. We recently wanted to have our Wedding video converted to a USB drive. It was a VHS and its been al t least 20+ years old. I did not know it was difficult to find a place since I had been looking for a few weeks now. I had been to Mikes Camera in the past and remembered that they offered the transition of videos to Dvds and USB thumb drives. I went in without an appointment and they took my video tape cassette and gave me a 2 week due date for them to switch over video. I do remember paying under $60 for them to get the work started and would pay the open balance if there was any additional labor left. about 12 days later they were finished and they said I could pick up the USB. I was unable to pick it up, but since I had paid for it,; my son was able to pick it up. Definitely an easy transition for our video transfer at a reliable Camera store in the middle of Pleasant Hill which is convenient to go to. read more

Hello, I've waited almost a week to post this regarding the disappointing experience I had at the Pleasant Hill store. I wanted to make sure I was calm enough to express my disappointment without anger. This past Saturday (December 13, 2025), I made plans to have breakfast with my sister who is visiting from Texas and a cousin I hadn't seen in quite some time. We were going to meet at 10:30 am at "Crumbs" a breakfast place across the street. I am semi-professional photographer living in Antioch, Ca. I love visiting Mike's because its rare to have a real camera shop these days. I got to the area right before 10:00 am, so I decided to stop by Mike's. I had no plans to buy anything, but just wanted to waste time and look around. I've shopped here years, all my purchases are recorded and have never been more than $250 at one time. Nothing major, but I like that I can visit an actual camera store and not buy online. When arriving at the store the manager came to open the door. It's just a policy at this store so it wasn't strange. I was met by Andrew Krebs the store manager and was hesitant to let me in. He never gave me a reason, but told me he'd be back and closed the door. I was let in by another employee. I just looked around, but I felt very uneasy by the interaction, but I still browsed. I then see him whispering to an African American employee (who I now know is named Jaylon) and then they walked outside. Just so you know, I am a 50 year African American male. I was unbelief that he was acting so strangely. So I walk outside and see him conversation with Jaylon. I asked him why he had behave so strangely and what it was about, and he began stammering. From what I gathered he believed I was someone that stolen from the store. I was enraged, but I controlled my anger. I asked for him to show me proof. He began shaking and behaving nervously and unable to locate the photo evidence he claimed to have. It's been a long time since I've been so insulted. When he was unable to produce any evidence of his claim. I asked for his card and his superiors name. He only gave his card and then began apologizing. It was too late. I was never rude, but I was indeed pissed! He began apologizing once again, but I just took the card and left. I am 50 years old. I am married with adult children and grandchildren. I explained to the employee Jaylon, that this was particularly insulting do the current political and racial climate in this country. What a really nice camera shot and efficient! I needed prints at a decent price and I was able to get that. The bonus was the prints were ready faster than I could log out of what I was doing on the computer at that time. The place was well staffed and they were nice/welcoming. I was assisted by Andrew to help fix a problem. My 94-year young dad had come in and got reprint enlargements from a photo I had given him. He spent a lot of money for the enlargements and 1 poster size. He brought them to me to get framed for the family. They were not great, because it was copies of a copy. I spoke with Andrew on the phone and he had me come down to the store and he printed new enlargements from the original file I had. They came out so much better and clear. Charles and Jalen have been the team members helping me out most visits. They're always super nice, welcoming me in, checking in, and answering all my questions with ease, without putting any negative pressure on me to buy. I'll continue to go to this location for my major purchases since i don't like having lenses shipped to me. The customer experience there is great, align with quality of merch and I'm always able to find something at a reasonable and fair price.
