This is the fastest and easiest place to get a propane tank filled in the city. Friendly and easy parking.

They are closed on Sunday,contrary to some old reviews, and they close early on Saturday. But if you need to rent a propane tank ($10 a day but Sunday is free) or fill one not on Sunday, this is your best source in SF city limits. Fast service, in and out in less than less than 10 minutes (3-5 if there's no line at the pump). On site parking, so no driving around to find a space. I just get propane there, but over several years, their service has been first rate. BTW, I always weigh my tank before and after filling, and what they charge is always correct. They charge by the gallon so you need a scale and some simple math to convert gallons to pounds, but my math says these guys are straight shooters. read more

I rented a 40 ft ladder from here and specified that I only needed it from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM (2 hours). They said to just call them when I was done, so I did - and they said they wouldn't be able to pick it up until the following day. I am writing this on my way to the airport after missing my flight, as instead of leaving earlier - I had to hire someone off taskrabbit with a truck to drop off the ladder. The pickup fee from action was $70, whereas I spent $95 on taskrabbit, as well as missed my flight because of all of this. I asked the manager to cover only the additional cost in a partial refund (so that I wouldn't be paying more than my initial contract), and he flat said "that ain't happenin." 4 fails - one in the poor communication of the protocol for pickup, second is the lack of availability of service to pickup the ladder, third is the poor customer service to make right the fails of the initial two, and the fourth - the ladder was shoddy & weak. Over-all would recommend going with another company. Even if it costs more, you'll know you'll be in good hands. read more

I went online yesterday to rent a chainsaw for today. I received a confirmation of my order. I was at the shop by 0900. Not one customer on a beautiful summer morning. The uptight guy at the counter said they didn't have any chainsaws. I showed him my confirmation on my phone. He said tough shit. We're out of those. I thought I was supposed to fill the propane cannister - but he said no you need to be certified to do the filling. Do not use this place if you are depending on equipment to be available when needed. I made a reservation one week in advance for a drum sander. When I went in to pick up the sander, there was no sander available for me to rent. I was given the story that someone overode the system and extended the sander rental for another customer for a whole week and I ended up without a sander putting my project behind. If you are on a schedule and need equipment to rent on a specific day, go elswhere because this business is unable to meet its agreements. read more

Actually, the only thing I buy, there is propane for my gas grill, but they're always really friendly and very fast to accommodate the customers, and just really pleasant to deal with. I have been an Action Rentals customer over my many years as a San Francisco homeowner and their service and offerings have always been top notch. However, this holiday season they screwed up and need to be called out on it to encourage them to get their act together. Knowing there would be a rush on patio heaters for the holidays, I called in advanced to book one early but was told they would not take a booking until the weekend before. I needed a chainsaw to cut a tree into decorations for my wedding. I was able to find a downed tree from a recent storm at a friend of mine's house in Napa. As much as I would have loved to purchase a chainsaw, living in San Francisco, I can't imagine the next time I'll need it and hence I found Action Rentals. They are located very centrally and have a huge selection of equipment and a great website, which is where I found the chainsaw. I rented a Husqvarna 20 inch chainsaw and was extremely happy with it. The 24 hour rental cost $60 after tax included extra gas, oil and a wrench to tighten the chain. I actually brought it back a couple of hours after my deadline and they only charged me for 1 day, without me even asking. The chainsaw itself worked great. We used it for about 3 hours and refilled it with gas 3 times. It was very powerful. Had no trouble getting through 18 inch logs but also made great smaller and more precise cuts. I will definitely use Action Rentals for any of my future heavy equipment needs. read more

Had my propane tank filled recently, the kind & helpful manager asked if my tank was new or not. I said it's new, never been used. He asked because there was no warning sticker on the top of the turn knob, it was placed on the inside of the tank. If he didn't check the tank would be ruined & deemed useless since there's air in new tanks. He explained to me the technicalities etc it was interesting to know. Outstanding customer service. I rented a power washer and got the help of a friend to operate it. All was going fine for several hours, but then it stalled out, and my friend who knows how to operate it couldn't get it re-started. Ryan of Action Rentals not only offered us the possibility of switching it out for a new one, but told us that when we got the new one, he would wipe away the hours we had already used it, and start all over again. It was getting late in the day, so we opted to start over again next week, and he was fine with that. With a name like Action Rentals, I expect to be able to buy x-ray-vision goggles, or a jet pack, or some sweet red latex knee-high boots here. (Hey, no one said superhero fashion was hetro.) Sadly, you can't do that. As far as I know. But what you can do is get your propane bottle filled, and buy grill pieces, and also rent (or buy) all manner of useful tools, like floor sanders, concrete finishing tools, and whatnot. Went there looking for propane refill...but realized that this placed deserved a yelp Three stars: you pull into a driveway with free parking; always important when you're hauling around a 20lb tank in your car; let's face it Muni or your scooter just isn't going to cut it 1 more star: very friendly service; they took the tank which i left at the refilling spot and had it filled within 5 minutes while I was ogling the BBQ supplies inside; lots of extra goodies for your Weber 1 more star: they are a local shop and their price are very reasonable; the Rhino tank costs more and I'm not really all that confident with the folks at Uhaul....these guys seem like they know which end of the tank the gas goes into. Plus always a little leery of getting someone else's used tank; when dealing with a trillion (ok maybe less...but who knows) BTU of highly flammable material I want to know exactly where that tank has been...BTW their price for a new tank is better than Loews....so why leave the city...plus they are open every day...so I don't have to drive to Wyoming on a Saturday or Sunday to do my share for global warming. The folks at Cole Hardware recommend this place...so extra kudos for the whole local business thing. read more

U-Haul on Bayshore refused to fill the propane tank in my RV because they're too dumb to realize the difference between DOT and ASME tanks. I am redoing my yard and needed to rent a rototiller. The tool library in SF is closed for some reason. I called Home Depot to check out their rental prices and I found Action Rentals as well. They were cheaper and close since I live in the city. They were VERY helpful, great service, knowledgeable. I had a great experience renting from them and will for sure rent from them again. I hate to be the person to give a one star rating for a business that's a 5 star gold medalist on Yelp, but I also can't keep quite if I've had a bad experience somewhere. If you're someone who's been using Action Rentals for your tool renting needs and are satisfied, please ignore this review and consider yourself fortunate. I'm posting this for the people out there who are in the same situation I was in a few weeks ago when I needed to rent a chainsaw and was weighing my options in the SF area. I chose Action over the corporate companies because their rates are comparable and I prefer to give my money to smaller, locally owned businesses. However, after the experience I had, not only will I never rent a tool from Action Rentals ever again but I am also very reluctant to recommend them to others. I had to make a total of three trips to and from SOMA to pick up three different chainsaws - two of which had dull blades and one that wouldn't stop stalling out on me. While I was most concerned about the dangers of using a chainsaw for the first time, in the end it was faulty equipment that put me at risk of injury. A job that should have taken an hour at most ended up being dragged out over the course of three days. I'm an easy going guy and was willing to cut Action Rentals some slack, but the worst came when I was charged $60 for the rental and called the company up to talk to them about it. There's nothing worse than renting a defective tool, getting charged for the rental, and then having the blame placed on you! I've worked in the service industry and would never talk to a customer - even if they were at fault - the way I was talked to by a manager at Action Rentals. After being accused of expecting a free rental and basically being made to feel like moron for not making do with a dull or inoperable chainsaw, the manager agreed to give me a refund. I am grateful for that and also must mention that everyone at Action was very friendly and helpful aside from the last phone conversation with management. Nevertheless, I ended up renting a clean, sharp, smooth running chainsaw from a big box home improvement store with a location in Colma for the same price (with Kevlar chaps and a safety helmet thrown in free of charge). Action Rentals needs to make some serious changes in how they treat their customers and stop renting out second rate tools; if not, they'll keep losing patrons such as myself. read more

Sam was really helpful and when I protested the $100 delivery, he agreed to give me the $10 neighbor delivery fee (I live 3 blocks from here). Meth cooks are getting the propane tanks from the exchanges at Wal-Mart, Kroger,Gas Stations etc. and emptying them of the propane. Then, they are filling them with anhydrous ammonia ). After they are finished with them, they return them to the store then I go and exchange and use...... BOOM BOOM blow up no grill AHHHHHH! Jaime was super helpful over the phone and coordinated everything for me on short notice. Picking up my items was a breeze. Normally I swap my BBQ's propane tanks at the best "exchange" price I can find, but I recently learned "exchange" tanks (at a gas station or wherever) aren't "full" but merely 2/3 to 3/4 full so the price is actually quite high per gallon. Knowing this now, I decided to refill my tank instead. I spent a half hour calling each of the SF "Gas Propane" places in the Yellow Pages (yes, they're still useful) and wrote down the prices each business quoted me. Action was the winner at $3.09. The next-best price was $3.49 so it didn't seem unreasonable when I heard Action's price quoted clearly and unhesitatingly on a perfect phone line by a man speaking accent-less English in a quiet background. When I parked in their lot, a tall gentleman working outside was incredibly helpful and speedy. The place was spotless clean inside and out, well-organized and all was good. But when I paid for my 4.5 gallons of propane, the total cost was $20.02. I don't know if there's sales tax on propane or not, so that total works out to either $4.45 or $4.06 a gallon. Neither is remotely close to my quote in sound or price per gallon and it's my fault I paid it since I didn't speak up at the time. The price difference was probably a simple mistake, but the next-best-priced provider is actually closer to my house and I'm likely to just go there the next time instead. We'll see. read more

Does anyone on yelp actually use these guys for what their worth?? one word: Jackhammer. When I need one this is where I go. Tile saw, paint sprayer, pencil vibrators, coring drills, you name it. I have never rented a faulty tool, never been overcharged, never had to wait for a rental, and never had bad service. They always take the time to explain the specifics of each tool, and offer advice and detailed instructions with each rental. This place is a necessity for my business and I am very grateful for their convenient location and parking.
