This is a wonderful place to fill your BBQ propane gas tank and to rent tools. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly, and didn't mind spending extra time with me to understand the nature of my DIY remodeling project, recommend the right tools, and walk me through how to use them. While tool rental prices initially seemed high to me, when I got there and realized that the tools are in tip-top shape, many even brand new, I knew I am getting my money's worth. Much better than buying a low-end tool and storing it. I've also been refilling my propane gas tank at Action Rentals for a while now. Used to exchange tanks at the gas station (Blue Rhino) but refilling it at Action Rentals turned out to be almost half the price. I'm so glad there's such a great place in San Francisco. These guys really get how to run a business when their procrastinating customer leaves a chair rental to an event at the last minute. As soon as I pulled up into the parking lot at around 5 pm, two helpful employees asked me what I was renting, and were loading the chairs in the back of my Jeep before I signed the contract. (which took less than 3 minutes because my files were already in the system) And they nice. Very nice. read more

Jaime was super helpful over the phone and coordinated everything for me on short notice. Picking up my items was a breeze. Why I love Action Rentals 1. They sell propane. 2. They sell propane EVEN ON SUNDAY. 3. You don't have to drive to the ends of the earth to get the propane. They are actually in the city so you don't have to drive beyond the Thunderdome just to fire up your grill. 4. The people who work there are friendly and helpful. Okay. Maybe five stars seems excessive, but anyone who has ever run out of gas at an inopportune time (ie. right before the guests are set to arrive, when a bbq is planned, or when you're really craving a perfect lamb chop or a proper burger) can attest to the lack of availability and service when it comes to getting propane in SF. These guys were friendly on the phone when I inquired about their hours; noticed when I pulled into the parking lot, greeted me, and carried the two propane tanks to and from the car; and happily took care of the purchase while the tanks were being filled. Not a good experience here. They did not give me all of the necessary pieces for my rental items and so I was really screwed up for a party we were having. I rented two Patio Heaters. Both were missing a piece and so they were useless. When I returned the heaters the next day ai was told "Oops, sorry we forgot to give you that.." Besides the missing pieces, one heater would not work at all. They have a good selection of items and it is all priced affordably. It's too bad they run the place terribly. Lastly, I guess they messed up charging my credit card. I paid when I left but saw an extra charge on my statement for $10 more later in the day. So weird. read more

The service here is top notch. If I call to find a certain tool to rent, I get a guy that actually knows what he's talking about. How rare is that? When I show up at the store, same thing! Five stars!? I bought propane at Action Rentals today. I'm sure it's the same propane they sell everywhere else, and probably about the same price. But everyone (specifically, the cashier and the propane guy) was so friendly and downright nice. Propane/equipment folks tend to be pretty gruff. The Action Rentals guys are the opposite. After reading about these guys, I decided to try out their propane filling service, and boy was I impressed to say the least. Services is very professional, friendly, courteous, and not to mention FAST. I was in and out in under 10 mins. When your fur baby/monster decides to pee on the carpet, and your good-intentioned husband decides to dump a bottle of natures miracle into the carpet, and then COVER it, you need a place like action rentals to save you and your security deposit. I chose action rentals because of their good yelp reviews, and I am so happy I did. I called, explained the situation, and was given friendly advice about what I needed. I drove down, paid and signed the contract, and they loaded the power fan in my car for me. Three days later, I pulled in the lot and they were waiting to help me lift the massive fan out of my trunk. No hassles, no upscales, no hidden costs. Just good business. Rented a table here for $30 a week and it was a very easy process to pick up and drop off! The person who was helping us was also very nice by going in the back and getting us another table when I complained about the first one being dirty. And he did it without any attitude! read more

Was pleased to find a local option other than U-Haul (don't get me started...) to fill up the propane tank for a little Friday afternoon BBQ. Pulled into the convenient lot, and a friendly staff member immediately came over, picked the tank up from my car, filled it up, and sent me on my way. Nice and easy, very friendly. I've filled my BBQ propane tank here for years. Most convenient in the City. Great service, parking and fast.

I was having an event at my work space and needed some tables, after dealing with Action Rentals I needed some tylenol! I arrive to pick up my tables and it takes quite a while to even get my rental. I go for the insurance against damage. The tables are brought out to me and they're beat to hell, lesson learned don't bother with the coverage on most of their stuff since it's already beat up! The next morning my buddies van doesn't start so I call and ask if they can pick them up, and work with me on the price a little since we're 4 blocks from their location. Bob, the manager, says I should've planned better and they can't give me any deal. $50 to pick up it is. But they can't pick up that day, while I'm at work, they'll have to pick up the next day. I had the tables set up for pick up about 20 feet inside a roll up door, at the top of a ramp, since it was pouring rain all night and into the morning. The guy comes to get the tables and refuses to pick them up since they were inside the door. Was I supposed to leave them in the rain? Instead of calling my number, which they had on file, Bob calls my boss and starts yelling at him about how there will be more charges. Another $25 to have the guy walk 20 feet to get the tables stacked dry and safely. Quite simply there's a way to deal with customers on the phone, and in person, these guys don't have the temperment or training to deal with people. I'm spending $200+ dollars with you you should be able to make me feel good about it, not an inconvenience or problem to be dealt with! My bosses, until this, rented about $1,000 worth of equipment and tables there every year.....Never again! I would rather be saying I had a positive experience over a shitty one. But Bob is an ass and I will NEVER do business with them again, and I'll spread the word as far as I can to make sure no one else does! read more

These people are extremely disorganized and unprofessional. I had ordered ten folding chairs to rent for an event for my company. I had submitted a request on their website, got a call an hour later about a credit card authorization form. I submitted the form a few days later and never received a confirmation. I sent a few follow up emails and never received a reply. Finally I called them in the early morning, and the guy who picked up seemed to not know anything. I told him I had already sent my cc authorization and a few emails. He seemed confused. We were going to pick up the chairs on that day. I explained to him my order again and had requested them to email me the invoice. I never got an email, but got a printed invoice when we had someone go pick up the chairs. Turns out, they sent the invoice to the wrong email address - they did not spell my email address right. Someone can't spell "beauty". Jeez. Bottom line: if you don't want to deal with disorganized people and go through the hassle of re-explaining things over and over again, avoid Action Rentals. read more

Driver shows up and tells you he won't deliver a ladder inside a building. Curbside drop-off only. But they don't tell you that in advance. I've used much better, more professional rental services that go the extra distance for their customers...in this case thee xtra distance was 25 feet. I don't recommend Action Rentals read more

Today I went in to rent a small tool for the day. So much personal help for a naive guy, and received just the right tool for my job. I've only used Action for propane tanks and fill-up, but they do a great job. Most other stores now push their propane tank exchange systems, where you effectively pay for a full tank each time even if you still have a gallon or two left. Those systems also only include 15lbs in the 20lb tank. So I bought a new (full) tank from Action for $65 total and I think refills are $4.09/gallon. Keep in mind that they shut down their propane pump about 45 minutes before the business closes, so get there early. If parking isn't available in their front lot, they have a fenced in side lot too. read more

Rented 2 patio heaters for $55 a piece per day. Over the phone was told that at the rate I was quoted, it was a 1 day rental due back the next business day. I picked them up on a Saturday at 11am and returned them Sunday at 3:30pm and was charged for a late return. When I talked to the sales guy on the phone to dispute the charge was rude and did not honor what the original employee had quoted me because of clauses in the contract. This business does not honor their word and uses questionable sales tactics, then overcharges you when you return their equipment - pointing to fine details in the contract that were not explained ahead of time. I had to rent a couple items. Whoever took my reservation from the website reservation service wrote the wrong time and quantity down(which was proven, when he looked at the sheet), when I get there, he was digging through the recycling to find my reservation because I "didnt show up" so he had thrown it away. No phone call or anything... I picked it up at 4pm(they close 5:30) on wed returned it at 7am on the dot Friday and was charged 2 days! He was nice, but actions speak louder than words. That is a ridiculous rental policy. At first I didn't care and accepted it, but when I left, later that day i started to think about it and how dumb that policy is. read more

Called and spoke to some guy that sounded uninterested in working. Tried to pry information out of him, their phone or his phone seems to not be functioning because here would be long silences (he might have been doing something else at the same time, seemed distracted). Used these guys a few time now, and always very happy with the equipment and the service. They make sure its working, and most importantly you know how to use it before you leave. I recently rented a tiller and it worked a treat. It saved me hours of time when compared to going at it with a spade, not to mention some serious grief from my back. For 1/2 day it was just north of 40$. It also worth noting that if, like me you do not own a large SUV/pickup they do offer delivery. Im not sure how much they charge but I rented a pickup from a local U-Haul for less than a nifty (aka 50) and picked up some wood I needed from the discount building supply nearby. Sorted. read more

This place is SO disorganized and rude. It does no good to call in advance of your event to make an equipment reservation. They will lose any record of your reservation and you will have to call again to remind them. The owner and employees act like they have never done business with you before, even when you are a repeat customer. Pretty disappointing. read more
