I needed a haircut on Sunday and every other place in the area was fully booked. Found them on Yelp, gave them a call and came in right away (no wait). This location is brand new so they have a pretty basic "waiting area". Steven cut my hair and did a great job, lots of attention to detail! I used to go to Robert at Active in Santa Monica years back, and in fact have gotten cuts from Robert even before they opened the shop. He's a master of barber techniques, particularly fades. He's amazingly consistent, especially if you have a look you want to keep duplicating each time you go for a cut. I moved away for a few years and unfortunately lost touch with Robert and Active, but I moved back recently. I heard Robert opened a new shop in Culver, so today I decided to go in and check it out. I was reminded today how awesome Robert's fade technique is. The new shop is a lot roomier than the SaMo one, and it was actually surprisingly quiet on a Saturday afternoon. Absolutely the best barber shop in LA. I have never left disappointed. When I moved to LA I went to many barber shops and left wearing a hat for the next week cause I hated my cut so much. After going to active barbers one time I never went to another spot. All the gentlemen at Active Barbers are excellent at cleaning up your messy hair or helping you navigate the world of hair styles if you are looking for a new look. I have been coming to Active Barbers since 2012 (yes, that's 6 years) and I have yet to have a bad experience. Every barber has given me a cut, other than Steve (because he is generally appointments only). That being said, you will find Lou, Chris and Kevin at the Santa Monica location and Rob and Sal at the newer Culver City location. Both places are welcoming and full of energy, with televised programs on for your viewing pleasure while you wait (they can get packed, which is a good and bad thing, good because it shows they are good, bad because if you need a cut quick during their peak hours then you may not be on time for your event) and music is always playing to keep the vibes high and happy. They let an apprentice with two months' work experience give me a haircut with no prior warning (I was not told that a non-full-time employee would be providing me with the service). 10 minutes into the cut I realized that my barber had no idea what he was doing, to the extent that I had to ask specifically how long he had been cutting hair because he seemed to be very unsure of himself and took much longer than he should to give me a fade. Once this grueling experience was over I took a look at myself in the mirror and borderline wanted to cry. I had a huge client meeting the next day and would have made a fool of myself walking into the meeting looking like I got my hair cut by someone with onset dementia or Parkinson's disease. It was so bad that as consolation my barber tried offering me half-off, which I accepted, and was shown to the door. No one else in the shop (experienced barbers who could clearly see that I had been completely ripped off) had the sense to tell me that I looked horrible. Needless to say, I will not be coming back here again. If you're looking for a barbershop that values customer service I would look elsewhere. Best, read more
