Came here after a hike wanting something nutritious. Ordered a couple of açaí bowls and smoothies. So delicious and fresh! Service was great; ambiance was great. Several people biked/scootered in and sat outside. You can see the river too!

Was craving something nourishing for my body after a week of pastries and indulgences so I stopped by Active Culture. I ordered a breakfast bowl with spinach and potatoes. Overall, it was very hearty and I ended up taking half home. That said, I found it to be a tad over priced at $19 for beans, two eggs, micro diced potatoes, a little cheese and spinach, some avocado and toppings. The cheese was also a bit rubbery and cold by the time it arrived. Overall, it was good and clean (which is a major plus) but I'm not sure I'd order this bowl again and would try the açaí instead. The staff were friendly on a busy Saturday and the bowl took about 15 minutes or so to come out. I sat outdoors which was lovely as it was a warm sunny day. There are lots of outdoor benches with umbrellas. The indoor seating is a bit more limited.

We had a delicious delivery and cannot wait to visit in person! We had the protein açaí bowl and the hummus wrap. Both delicious. Why a 4 versus a 5 star? The delivery was timely; however the two drinks we ordered (la croix) were not delivered. We probably won't order delivery again as we don't trust we'll get our entire order.

An amazing vegetarian place that has a great variety of healthy options. Came here for lunch with family after a day of skiing and everything was so lovely. It's clean and cozy inside w/ very kind staff & fast service. I ordered the breakfast bowl over spinach which was warm and fresh. You can really tell that the ingredients are fresh and you feel great and energized afterwards. Loved this place and its effort to provide healthy meals!!

Came here for a quick healthy lunch. The menu is full of fresh, veggie friendly options. I liked the kale salad though was disappointed that it lacked any protein. By far, the bend bowl was everyone's favorite and I would order it again. It had a curry like sauce, avocado, cabbage, beans, and rice! Super yummy.

This is a great choice for anyone looking for a vegetarian or vegan option that is relatively quick to order and receive. There are great amenities such as the great big play structure for your kids to party hard upon or the indoor play sets. The options are just wide enough to allow you to need to come back twice to try the huevos rancheros because clearly today was clearly a Buddha bowl kind of day. The smoothie bowls are surprisingly satisfying and presented well with plenty of flavors and textures to mix. They also have a magical smoothie with mint and chocolate that really hits the spot on a warm afternoon. I appreciate the choice to offer reusable cups and real utensils when dining in. I believe they also have a BYO container option for the bone broth they sell of grabbing that is your thing. The extra seasonings are a la carte as well making self service easy. I love the large raw edge wooden community table as well as the bistro seating indoors. The outdoor patio by the play structure is where it is really at though. I love dining outside and this feels like a great place to relax due to the neighborhood setting of the restaurant. Makes sure to swing by for happy hour Bonta gelato from 3-5 in the afternoon after your standing wave or tubing sesssion. read more

Came here on the recommendation of a friend who enjoys eating healthy good food. I was in the mood for an açaí bowl, but as soon as I saw the nachos wall by I had to get them. They were a delicious mound of food that I, very hungry, enjoyed throughly!! Was it the healthiest thing on the menu, probably not, but so worth it! Next time I hope to try a grain bowl and maybe the gelato! read more

AMAZING. First time here, stopped by for lunch after taking my daughter to get her permit test, and this food multiplied our good moods tenfold!! Daughter is obsessed. We aren't sure if you're a chain but are willing to drive from Portland to Bend just to return to this pocket of heaven on earth. Super well organized, friendly and amazing staff, very clean, and the food is DELICIOUS! Daughter got huevos rancheros and I got the wholesome bowl. We don't know what kind of magic is mixed into those sauces in the kitchen, but we sure do love it! Interesting location, but it stands out, and wasn't hard to find! Will recommended to anyone we know going to Bend. We are outside and also saw a really cool play structure for kids, and saw multiple families, which was so sweet. This. place. is. AMAZING. I wished I lived closer to Bend just so I could eat here. So much variety in their menu and everything is so flavorful and delicious. We got the wholesome bowl, a burrito, the chili and an açaí bowl and it was the most satisfying meal we've had in a long time. We ordered a bowl for chili since restaurants usually skimp on it but it was so big it could have fed both of us. If we ever road trip through again we will definitely be back! read more

We walked here after having lunch at The Podski food truck area, and we were so glad we did! It was gelato happy hour (WHAT!?!). My daughter enjoyed stracciatella and I shared my half espresso brownie and half toasted coconut cup with my husband who shared his Java Joy shake (so good)! I wish we had one of these where we live...we will definitely be back when we visit Bend! read more

I've been to Active Culture only once, for breakfast a week ago. My rating system starts with five stars and then I deduct if necessary. Minus one star for the coffee. Not the quality, but the portion. ONE cup and that's it for breakfast? You bring it to me and then we're done? No more without buying another cup? Really?? Minus one star for my breakfast portion. I ordered the full portion of huevos rancheros. My niece got the half order for about half the price. Guess what. Her plate was bigger than mine and loaded with more chips and probably one egg instead of the two I got. That seemed to be about it, except to say she got a smidge less food for half the price. Otherwise, the place is clean, the people are friendly, and the menu is fine. Kinda hipster trendy, but fine. Not going to rush back. read more

Love this place for breakfast, lunch and dinner! It hasn't been discovered yet, still a local's secret, so no long lines! Everything is mostly vegetarian but it's food that is real food... potatoes, eggs, smoothies, rice bowls etc. I'm a fan of the breakfast tacos and the breakfast rice bowl. Great kid section and kid menu, our 4 year old loves it! I think they offer delivery too. Highly recommend! read more

Started by a local Orange County family, we began as a self-serve frozen yogurt shop in San Clemente, CA and over the years have evolved into a (primarily vegetarian) natural foods cafe with five locations across California and Oregon. We opened our doors to the beautiful community of Bend in Fall, 2018.

I looked around for something similar, but less the cardamon and came across Cafe des Chutes. We visited at 9 am on a Sunday and it wasn't too crowded at all, with only a single person ahead. They have plenty of seating and I think most people decide to eat their treats in the cafe; we had to hit the trail though, so we got ours to go to eat while hiking. Mango Sticky Rice Honey Glazed Croissant ($6.25) - Woah, this is an exceptionally sticky pastry, so sticky it's actually a little cumbersome to eat since the glaze spreads on any surface it touches and becomes very difficult to remove. The glaze tastes just like fresh honey - in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if it were mostly honey. There's not much mango flavor until closer to the center, along with another flavor of something very fragrant almost flowery They sprinkle coconut flakes on top, giving a somewhat fruity flavor. The croissant itself is very good - great crust, nicely flaky and crisp with a great texture on the interior, chewy and airy. The lamination seems to be good based on a cursory inspection, but I didn't have a sharp bread knife on me for a clean cut as I usually do. The pastry is very sweet and the glaze covers up the flavor of the croissant entirely. (5/5) Oregon Roll ($6.25) - This base, on the other hand, is really buttery, combining the great lamination, crispy and flaky, with great flavor. There's a fantastic honeycomb texture on the inside combined with the perfect chewiness. They do add a marionberry swirl on the interior, which is pretty obviously included in terms of color, but can't really be tasted on top of the croissant butteriness. On top, they spread a spiced hazelnut glaze, sweet and nutty, almost like peanut butter in texture mixed with butter. Delicious pastry overall. (5/5) Savory Bread Pudding ($10) - This is a super dense and heavy (in weight) bread pudding baked in a muffin mold. They offer to heat it up and it's a really good idea to eat this warmed. We opted to get it cold since we weren't going to eat it for a couple of hours (for a picnic lunch) and it basically wasn't edible, with super dense, bitter and stale tasting bread, making it hard to even stick a fork into the top. We ended up waiting until we got to the hotel room to heat it up the next morning for breakfast, which made it much more palatable. There's some mushroom essence with tons of black pepper and a dense yet pleasingly chewy bread. Cheese is baked on top and there's a little vegetal bitterness from spinach. Not rating this since we ate it the next day. Overall I enjoyed my treats from Cafe des Chutes. I would visit again the next time I'm in Bend. Bathrooms - Tiny room near the front. The water heater takes up some of the space inside, so it's quite warm in the room

There's even a marionberry and white chocolate bread pudding that would make a wonderful brunch choice.

That too was a good idea as the place gets loud with conversation when it fills up. Music wasn't loud, just the people. The menu isn't huge but there are quite a few, varied choices. Given the meal was a bit of a splurge for us, I essentially ignored the prices, which are not trivial by any means. Fine dining entails spending money. Zydeco has a ton of reviews and as the menu apparently doesn't change, I'll just say everything we ordered was great. Cocktails too. The Bramble Down is exquisite. Service was top tier as well. Timely, attentive, professional without being stiff. The capstone to our experience involved the bill. We actually had a gift card from 2017 - nine years ago. While it certainly didn't cover the whole bill, or even half, it was a nice way to defray costs. Unfortunately, when the server ran the gift card, it showed no balance. Not sure why but perhaps over the years, the card had been erased by stray EMF. Despite that and given we provided the card receipt, the restaurant honored the card for the full amount anyway. Just spent six days in Bend and let me tell you about our favorite find: Active Culture. We were there for less than a week and ended up visiting this gem four times! Yes, you read that right - four times in six days. My daughter was so hooked on their Lentil Goodness Bowl that she didn't even want to try anything else. It's that good! The Lentil Goodness Bowl is a vegan delight packed with flavors that kept us coming back for more. We loved it so much that we bought their amazing OG sauce to take home and try to recreate the magic ourselves. The staff at Active Culture are incredibly friendly, making each visit a joy. The restaurant has a super welcoming vibe, and the outside patio is a perfect spot to relax and enjoy your meal. If you're ever in Bend, do yourself a favor and check out Active Culture.
