We stopped by laughing planet twice on our trip to Bend, Oregon. The first shortly after we arrived since we were really hungry, and the second during lunch on our final day. Both times, my wife and I were glad we went. I forget what my wife had, but I had the comfort bowl my first day and it was delicious. Everything tasted fresh. Good portion sizes. Friendly staff. And a vibe that said the place really cares about somewhat healthy foods, and common allergens. The second day I had the Thai bowl and it was equally delicious. I ended up taking some leftovers with me since I knew I was going to want to enjoy some of it for lunch the next day. The staff was absolutely wonderful. I never really like going to new restaurants and trying to figure everything out, but the staff was easy-going, and walked us through their process, the menu, and genuinely seemed like they are treated well. If we are back in Bend, Oregon, and then near future, we are definitely going to come back. read more

Looking for a green, vegan lunch spot on a recent trip, we found Laughing Planet on Third Street. I asked for the house speciality and ordered the featured bowl which as full of protein, but no fresh veges except for the chopped tomatoes and avocado. I liked the variety of veges in the bowl, which was pretty large, but, my partner was not impressed. The place was clean, but had no style to speak of. There were plenty of locals dropping in. Long time customer no more. This has been our go-to to-go spot for the last several years. Since the new management, the service and quality has been lacking. After picking up an order and driving home, my daughter bit into her mini burrito and cried out in pain, pulling a rock from her mouth. Yes, a rock in her bean and cheese burrito. I got a call back from Samantha at corporate who could not have been more apathetic to the situation. No apologies, explanations or assurances were offered - just a quick refund for the meal and good riddance. Needless to say, this is the end of an era for us. read more

Vegan Series, Part 4 So you're planning to go out for a meal with friends or family in Bend, Oregon. You realize that some of them are Vegan and some are not. Now what? Do you pick the Vegan place and ask those who are not of that persuasion to be adventurous on that particular occasion? Or perhaps you pick a place that has more traditional offerings and ask your Vegan friends/family to scour the menu for at least one suitable selection? Well imagine not having to ask either camp to sacrifice anything and going somewhere that offers a full menu that caters to everyone's preferences. How you ask? Take them to "Laughing Planet." Catering to the Vegan, Vegetarian, Gluten Free, and Omnivore members of your tribe, I can't recall ever seeing such a comprehensively diverse menu. Not only are all the Vegan options clearly delineated on the menu, but all of the entrees can be made Vegan by simply omitting or substituting cheese for Vegan "cheese" and chicken or beef with organic tofu or tempeh (for no additional charge). No need to do any subbing when it comes to their chili or most of their soups because they are already Vegan. Does dessert sound good? Try their Double Chocolate, Oatmeal Chocolate Chip, or Snickerdoodle cookies. We tried all 3, they were all good, and they were all Vegan. No matter your food preferences I hope that you have an affection for our planet and want to see it cared for and cherished. Well these folks sure see it that way. Every sale of a kid's smoothie results in a donation to the "Friends of Trees" organization that is helping to improve and restore the tree canopy in the Portland area by the planting of more than 900,000 trees and shrubs since 1989. That seems just all too fitting to me given that one of our responsibilities as adults is to leave this planet as an inheritance to our children in at least as good a condition as we received it. Took a friend for a birthday meal here; there were 3 of us. I couldn't have been more disappointed. Chips and guacamole? Sorry, out of guacamole. OK, how about question? Sorry, out of queso. Hmm, do you have chips? We ordered and this is what we got for $50. A quesadilla with cheese and 6 chicken chunks. A bowl of olives, black beans, and...wait for it...avocado! (No guacamole? ). And finally a Korean BBQ "bowl" with about 1/2 cup of rice, about 1/2 head of broccoli, and 4 small slices of chicken (added for $3.25!...how much is that per pound?), and a load of cilantro lime slaw (note: they forgot the sesame seeds). All in, these meals could've been made for less than $5.00. I don't mind paying for a good meal--even one that's more spendy, but this wasn't even close. I felt like they weren't even trying...that they have a niche market and take those people for granted. Never going back. Oh, and I just heard from our friend that he was sick all night. Bright and quirky place with tons of vegan options. It's Mexican-inspired but definitely a "Pacific Northwest" kinda Mexican food, so don't go expecting Mexican food like what you would get in Texas or California. We got the chips and salsa to share, my mom got the crunchero quesadilla, and I got the tempeh burrito. My mom LOVED her quesadilla and the dip was flavorful too. Our chips and salsa were also very good. My tempeh burrito was a little more on the bland side but it was fine. I'm a bit picky about tempeh that tastes too "ferment-y" but I didn't notice that at all with my burrito. I will say it was MONSTER sized and therefore very messy. Everything was super filling and good value for money. Overall, we really enjoyed our food and the quirky decor (love the plastic dinosaurs on the tables -- we got triceratops!) Delicious, healthy, and tasty... what more do you need? Their thai bowl is my favorite and their snickerdoodle cookie. Their bibimpap is pretty good as well. One of our other favorites is the chicken burrito made into a bowl. This place survived 2020 for good reason! They also usually have a coupon in the smart shopper for locals. Delicious food with so many great options for dietary needs. Plenty of places have gluten free tortillas for tacos but this is the first time we were able to get full sized burritos on GF tortillas so that was a huge plus! We tried the chile verde beef burrito and the bubba burrito, both with no cheese, and we loved that they had the option to add vegan sour cream! You order at the counter and then take a seat, they bring out the food to you, and you bus your own table after. Servers were so friendly and helpful. Definitely glad we came here! read more

I've avoided Laughing Planet because of a perceived notion that it was strictly vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free, what have you. Being an omnivore, such restaurants have little appeal. Although I will eat vegetarian meals quite often (rarely vegan), I like having meat options. And that's exactly what Laughing Planet offers, turns out. This is a fast casual, bus your own table joint. Order at the counter, get a number, the food comes out in short order. While I'm fine with fast casual, I'm not so enamored of the bus your own table thing. A lot of casual restaurants seem to be picking up on that unfortunate trend. Mind you, while I have no problem clearing the table, I find that some others really aren't very diligent about cleaning their mess. So the staff has to come by anyway. It's not a big deal - I'm just offering an opinion. Food: - SW green chile burrito, ordered deluxe (sour cream and guacamole added). Very good and very large. I ate it all but maybe I shouldn't have. My only complaint is that because the burrito is so big, it tended to lose structural integrity and I ended up using a fork. - Korean BBQ bowl with beef. Pretty decent and spicier than I had anticipated. But the sauce is not great - a little too acidic for my tastes and it certainly isn't Korean. Tons of broccoli included, which is a good thing. Condiments are available at the back left, which is where the bussing station is located. Leftover containers are there, too. Prices are reasonable, parking is sufficient, staff is friendly. And they have beer. Wifi, no password. You will, of course, want to grab a dinosaur or two to attend your table while you eat. read more

On a recent visit to Bend my husband and I had lunch at laughing planet. Parking lot is average and manageable. Seating is ample. This place is clean and spacious. The service was fast and friendly. They have a water station. It's casual and healthy. They have a huge menu so I think a variety of diets can be easily accommodated here. We had the Thai peanut bowl (delicious) the chips and guacamole (good) and the kale Caesar salad. I liked the salad but didn't expect the nutritional yeast although I'm sure it is listed on the menu. Pretty affordable and healthy! Yummy kale Caesar salad for $12 (I added tofu for $3). I wish there was a bit more kale. It wasn't a huge salad but it was tasty. My favorite menu item is their bowls. They're huge and packedddd with veggies. I can't believe how many veggies they give you! Most restaurants put tons of rice to save money... not here! So even though it's $15, it feels more worth it. I always feel healthy after eating here! However, I wish they had some more veggie/vegan options. There are some solid choices -- but for example, the only veggie taco is mushroom & they're just okay. Either way, more than not, I really like this place for "Bend affordable" casual fast dining. Wow I don't think I have ever been treated so poorly at a restaraunt in Bend. I have been coming to laughing planet for the past couple years for their healthy paleo bowls, I really enjoy their vegetables and beef however after today I'm going to have a hard time giving them money and supporting a business that is so blatantly disrespectful to their customers. Today was the second time this same employee was working and has treated customers rudely. Upon arrival I was asked if I had made an order online I said I had not and she rolled her eyes and told me I guess I can take your order but it's better if you order online. I said oh I didn't know that was an option. She was extremely unhappy about having to take my order and when I started my order she told me to "stop stop stop that I was ordering too fast for her" she said it in such a rude disrespectful way it totally caught me off guard. I literally couldn't believe someone working in a customer service job would treat a customer so rudely. I asked for a side of their sauce when I made my order and received no sauce so had to go back inside and ask for sauce she literally brought them out and practically threw them at me through my car window, she turned away and stormed off. It was almost laughable how bad the customer service was (maybe that's why they call it laughing planet). I really hope you guys work with your staff to improve their customer service skills so customers don't have the rest of their day ruined by simply coming there to order food. read more

I wish we had come here sooner while visiting! A friend of ours recommended Laughing Planet since we like to eat healthy and I have some food restrictions. (No dairy, no wheat, etc.) First off, the staff we have encountered is wonderful!! They went above and beyond to accommodate our needs and recommend what they thought we would like! They got us hooked on their Kombucha. We ordered a "Comfort Bowl" both times and we are hooked. We added broccoli which I recommend. My son had kids cheese quesadilla, it was also amazing. The chicken is good but not my favorite. The shredded beef is tender, flavorful and I highly recommend it. The vegan cheese and sour cream is so dang good, you would have no clue the sour cream is vegan! My family can have normal cheese and sour cream but they loved mine so much, they got it on theirs. The chips and salsa are addicting! I like the red medium salsa. I can't say it enough, I love this place! But seriously the staff makes this place awesome.
