I have traveled a couple times now from over 41 miles…read moreaway just to find out as a retiree that the base was closed off to me --- the last time the SP claimed was due to weather which there was no impact at the time. 2 days before Christmas and the only PX we have in Atlanta area was closed...!!! Upsetting to make an over 80 mile round trip to use services and they are cutoff / denied. On one occasion I called the PX and was told they were open but was denied access at the gate due to Covid restrictions imposed to only retirees. It would be helpful to have an updated status of access to the base on your active portal since there have been multiple decisions to not allow retirees in and you are all we have in the area for a PX.

The selection is spread out over three floors, they offer both open and private seating, the travel section is very robust, and there are plenty of computers to log onto. They had puzzles on the shelf and great area for kids to get used to the library and borrowing books. This time I attended a meeting in their meeting room. It was just right for a small group. But, I have to tell you, the chairs were most uncomfortable chairs I ever sat on. Restroom was clean and there was a snack machine in the lobby. Easy access to parking and beautiful surroundings. Staff was helpful.

This is easily the noisiest library I've ever been in dating back to grade school. Most of the staff operate exactly as you'd expect in a library, but a couple are quite loud, which invites some patrons to be loud in their interactions with those staff members. Earphones won't do the job. You need noise cancelling headphones. There is a large staff area/back room, and I'd love to see them move the desk for passport calls into that room, or into the dedicated passport meeting room itself.

And while all this futuristic stuff is nice, you'll still be able to stop in and ask a question of the real librarian staff in person. Plenty of real-live printed stuff still exists here (even Periodicals). While you're there, check out the children's programs onsite and virtually. Spaces allow for community events like tax prep and other civic causes throughout the year as well. Flexible hours make it easy to visit around work and school. Let your kids pick a random book from the large selection, or get specific with the online catalog terminals. Once you have everything selected, self-checkout will speed you on your way, or go old-school and take it to the counter. An actual person will be there to sign up your next child with their own library card, or help you find that one more research nugget you need. On the other hand, they could do a lot with modernization and facelifts of businesses. I've noticed over the past few years that it does seem to be getting more family oriented, and there are new businesses popping up like Family Dollar. There's an area right down by the railroad tracks where there are some businesses, and they could really do a lot with that with bars and restaurants and mixed use. During the holidays, especially Christmas, they do a nice job of decorating the town and making spirits Bright. One of the coolest additions in recent years is Volkstuin. https://www.volkstuin.us. I have been to a few gatherings there, and it's a really cool vibe, community garden, Dillon's restaurant, great patio for parties, and office space. Last, but not least, Dough in the Box donuts are in downtown Austell - amazing. Definitely worth a trip all on its own. The chocolate cake donut with chocolate frosting is my favorite. They have awesome fritters also. They usually open quite early and everyone who works there is super friendly.
