Instead of being met with professionalism or even basic empathy, the owner decided to accuse my mother of being "rude to the staff." Imagine calling a grieving daughter to scold her while she's trying to arrange cremation services. Completely unnecessary, inappropriate, and honestly disgusting behavior for someone in this line of work. The owner was cold, passive-aggressive, defensive, and seemed more focused on being offended than being helpful. This business does not treat grieving families with care -- they treat them like an inconvenience. To make it even worse, my grandmother's remains were returned to us in a plain box, not an urn. No dignity, no sensitivity, no effort -- just a box. And if you think this is a one-time issue, take one look at the owner's responses to Yelp reviews. She consistently responds to honest feedback by personally attacking customers instead of taking accountability. She has absolutely no right to insult or make assumptions about people she doesn't even know. She has no idea who we are, what our family dynamic is, what our grieving process looked like, or what we were dealing with -- yet she speaks as if she does. That alone tells you everything you need to know about her professionalism. If you can't handle death services with compassion, maturity, and respect, you are in the wrong profession. I genuinely hope more families speak up and report this business, because no one deserves to be treated this way while mourning a loved one. This was a horrible experience on top of already dealing with the death of my mother. The owner of this business was unprofessional , disrespectful, and in compassionate to say the least. This business owner Joanie Smith was so rude and wouldn't give explanation of circumstances concerning my mother's body being at the coroners and not with them. It was never explained as part of the process. She offered no explanation and became more rude and tried to turn it into me being the rude one. It only got worse and then yes, I got rude back. No one should ever be treated in this manner and Joanie Smith is clearly in the wrong business. I wouldn't wish this experience on anyone and most definitely do not recommend this place. She was able to walk me through so many difficult decisions and I will be forever grateful. Unfortunately, the only reviews I found were their own thirty 5-star reviews. I should have realized they were too good to be true as no one has every single review a perfect 5 stars. Joanie arrived by herself to pick up my sister's body. We asked who was going to help her and she said that our family was. We were mourning and distraught by my sister's death yet we were expected to put our loved one into their vehicle ourselves. 64+ year-old ladies and one son? The gurney she brought didn't fit through the door so we ended up having to call the fire department to carry out the body. Joanie made some insensitive remarks that upset members of my family. My sister had retained fluid in her final weeks of life due to her organs shutting down and perhaps weighed 250 at the most. Joanie made a comment that she didn't know she was going to weigh 400 pounds. It felt like a dig at us for showing our disproval that she showed up unprepared. Was not a good experience. They didn't rush us they encouraged us to say our goodbyes and made the process as least painful as they could. Writing this review for Adams Affordable Cremation & Burial of Anderson, CA is probably one of the hardest things I've ever done. But thanks to the owner, Ms. Joanie Smith and her staff, my worst nightmare was made tolerable, even in my grief-stricken state. My sister's hospitalization came so fast there was no time to even recognize what was happening let alone try to make arrangements for her last wishes. Two days in the hospital, a little over 2 days in hospice care and she was gone. My sister had no arrangements of any kind, other than to tell another sibling she wanted to be cremated and her ashes sent to her. My sister passed in Redding CA and I live in TX and all I could do was to look online at local funeral businesses and then make calls. As the oldest of six, I took control of the situation and looked for what I hoped would be a caring, transparent and affordable funeral home to take care of my sister's last wishes. I had no legal authority to make the arrangements, but Ms. Smith took the time to explain CA law, what we needed to do and helped us every step of the way. Little did we know just how little time we had as we signed the papers and sent to them Ms. Smith. Sadly, my sister passed away just a few hours later. Every step of the way Ms. Smith's caring, professionalism and knowledge was a guiding light, and she always took the time to answer my questions or make suggestions on how we should handle the situation. When you are suffering unimaginable grief and have to depend on strangers many, many miles away it becomes very difficult to make decisions of this nature and having Adams Affordable Cremation & Burial and in particular the owner, Ms. Joanie Smith there for us was more than I could have hoped for. I can honestly tell you they delivered what they promised and there were no unknown surprises on the bill. They might be the most inexpensive, but they are not cutting any corners on being compassionate and responsive. They are on top of everything, and are very responsive. When I needed a burial permit for my Mom (that I didn't know about) to be able to bury her with my Dad at the VA cemetery, the owner Joanie called me and covered the expense immediately.
