They are scam artists, stay away! I brought my husband to Adega Grill for his birthday dinner on Sunday, February 19th. After an average meal, I received the check and handed my credit card to the waiter. He came back to let me know that my credit card had been declined and I proceeded to give him another card (the payment went through) and we left without much fanfare, but I didn't understand why the first card had been declined. After I had gotten home I checked my credit card online and saw that the payment had gone through after all. I immediately called the restaurant and spoke with Marco, the manager. I explained to him that I had been charged for the meal on both cards ($200 on each credit card). He said that the same situation had happened to other guests at the restaurant that day and he assured me that he would resolve the situation. It is now Friday February 24th and I'm still waiting for the resolution that he promised! I have called every day and I have been told that Marco is not available. Imagine how he would feel if it were his money!! There are plenty of restaurants in the Ironbound, I will take my business elsewhere. I won't deal with these Charlatans again! read more

Cousins from the City and Nj met up in Newark's Portuguese neighborhood on Saturday. We had the most delightful lunch at Adega-starting with calamari, then we had Valencia paella and octopus on the menu of the day. Had pitchers of sangria and the bread was amazing. Attentive service. Great Ambience made reservations for Valentines Day with my GF and I was not disappointed. Great PreFix Menu for the holiday. The service was great even though the rooms were very busy, I would recommend the Champagne Sangria and the Salmon with Lobster with the bacon Mash and the Lamb Shank with potatoes, and the Calamari was also some of the best I've had in a long time. read more

Great place for food, drinks, and music. I've been going to Adega for years now and whether I stop in for dinner or just drinks, I always enjoy my time here. There are a couple of different options here to entertain your night. There is a bar entrance where you will find a very long bar. Keep in mind, this space is very narrow but there is usually plenty of seating. The other side which you have to come in through the next door is where you can enjoy dinner. After dinner they close that area to make room for the lounge which opens on weekends. I've always enjoyed the lounge area, especially any time I've come for a reserved event. Friendly people, great music selections, and just a great time. One of my go to appetizers is the Portuguese sausage they light on fire right in front of you. They serve it with Portuguese bread and if you want to kick it up a notch, order the cheese plate as well. They also demonstrate the same technique with the ribeye meal and it is just so flavorful. This dish usually comes with rice and beans and vegetables. They never disappoint with their expressive selection of wine and just recently I tried a night cap of their espresso martini. Although their martini comes with sambuca - which I am not a fan of, I opted to eighty six the sambuca and have it my way - with vodka. You never disappoint Adega! read more

A travesty. Really too upset for words, however since I just reached Elite status here I feel responsible to write something. We were in Newark for a show at Pru Center. Our original choice was Mi Pequeno Mexico or Seabra Marisqueira which we really regret not going to. Those were two of my favorite restaurants when I worked at Prudential. Anyhow, we convinced my brother and his girlfriend to come all the way from NYC to join us at Adega as it was recommended by an acquaintance and we had never tried it before. I had also raved to them for weeks about authentic Portuguese food in the Ironbound. They had to take several transfers from Manhattan to get to Penn Station Newark. Walked in and the hostess seemed like she was high and had no idea what was going on. Waiters seemed just as confused as to what their job was. Saturday night 6pm and the dining room was not filled. I had a gut instinct to leave when I saw the fancy decor. For some reason it seemed the food would be terrible, and that it would be the type of place that focuses on the decor rather than the food. I prefer a hole in the wall any day. Floor manager (tall man with eyeglasses) was rude and demeaning, didn't seem to want to serve us, very impatient. Started with calamari, grilled octopus, and can't even remember the other as it was so unremarkable...oh it was chorizo. Calamari came in big soggy rings on a bed of bitter lettuce, seemed like frozen calamari and canned marinara sauce. I mean come on!!!! Across the street you have access to the freshest seafood market! Hillshire farm kielbasa tastes better than the chorizo. The grilled octopus was SO disappointing. Not generous plump juicy portions of octopus leg chargrilled to perfection like Seabras one block away but diced up shriveled pieces of burnt pathetic bits. I wanted to leave then and should have. Another mistake. All the entrees came out cold. Entrees were the Snapper and Lobster Ravioli, and grilled kababs. We were able to stomach one of the kebabs, couldn't tell if one of the meats was turkey or chicken but it was all inedible. The sausages were salt bombs, my brother and husband hadn't eaten all day but couldn't eat the meat. Lobster ravioli was frozen too. Snapper was fresh at Least, but no flavor. Mashed potatoes tasted like it was from a box. Veggies were all soggy and bland. My brother's girlfriend was a trooper and made efforts to figure out ways to make our food "taste better", but when I go to a restaurant, especially fine dining, trying to make the food taste good is not my job!!!! We ate maybe 1/4 of the food. The waiters kept asking us if we were sure we didn't want to pack the leftovers to go. We were sure. We spent hundreds of dollars of our hard earned cash, were treated rudely, and were then presented with inedible food. One star for decor is all I can rightfully give this greedy establishment. read more

Went here with my parents before seeing Paul Simon at the Prudential Center. The restaurant is located in an area full of Portuguese restaurants but this one is considered to be a standout. Suffice to say, only certain aspects of this establishment stood out. While the food was very good, service and pacing problems did lead to a semi-poor experience. First off, the staff wasn't very good to communicate with one of them not understanding what tap water and even club soda was. Second, the entrees were served nearly 50 minutes after our apps came out. I understand the place was busier than usual but that doesn't excuse the long ridiculous wait. The fact that our server and the manager kept telling us it was coming when it wasn't didn't help at all. And third and most importantly, my mom ordered chilean sea bass and instead was given red snapper when the entrees came. Our server wrote down red snapper on the ticket when my mom clearly said she wanted chilean sea bass. LIKE HOW THE HELL DO YOU CONFUSE SEA BASS WITH SNAPPER??? IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE? To help fix the problem, they took 50% off the entree when they should have given it to us for free. Unreal. Enough negatives let's talk about the food because it's actually pretty good. The boiled octopus appetizer was very tasty and delicious but the chorizo sausage was a nice treat. It's flambéd tableside resulting in a crispy crunchy exterior with juicy flavors on the inside. My filet mignon and shrimp entree topped with almond sauce was cooked nicely and very satisfying. I am willing to give this authentic restaurant another chance because I believe it is possible to have a quality dinner without the setbacks we encountered tonight. Great Portuguese spot. I met my friends here for dinner, I had never had Portuguese food. The menu was full of great options. There was also a lot of wine to choose from as well. We ended up ordering pitchers of sangria which was very good. Everything my friends and I ordered was delicious and they served large portions. I love the wine cellar ambiance. First off, let me start by saying the food has been wonderful every time I've been here and it has been quite a few times. The reason I knocked off two stars was for the service. My husband is a fireman in Newark and he and his co workers always give their business to this place being holiday parties or eating lunch at the bar. I do NOT appreciate when they try to nickel and Dime you for a mistake their own servers make. There was a server named "Lima" there who charged our table for an appetizer the person next to us ordered and it just so happened to be the most expensive appetizer $24.98 for a small plate. The point is, that was not what we ordered but we did not want to make a bit problem so we decided to eat it thinking he misunderstood what we wanted. So 5 minutes later they bring us what we originally ordered and we said there must have been a mistake, "we thought you brought us this instead of what we ordered" The waiter acted like it was not a problem and said that's ok it's not a problem "I'll take care of it." So he left both appetizers on our table and we enjoyed both. I thought the waiter was courteous enough to admit his mistake. He did not tell us that in the end of the meal he would charge for BOTH appetizers plus the huge meal we ordered which we did not even finish and honestly they charge double the price of almost all the Portuguese restaurants in Ferry for a pitcher of Sangria. The portions are definitely oversized which I'm not complaining about. It just would have been the right thing to do to admit he made a mistake and take it off of our check or at least warn us he would charge us for both if we picked at both plates. Instead he said "I promise since you are paying for both look for me next time you come and I will pay for a pitcher of Sangria for you both." The owner is well known in the Portuguese community and I am sure they can afford to pay for their own mistakes. Very unhappy with how this waiter handled the situation. On top of that it was my birthday dinner, wish it didn't end on such a distasteful note. I love this place. Came here with the lady for a summer friday night and we had an awesome time. There is a lounge, bar, restaurant ALL in one establishment. The service here is on point and the food is great. Highly recommend to be seated outside during the summer. The only issue is that it's Newark and compared to other areas in NJ it is loud. Was invited here for dinner before a show at NJ PAC a few weeks ago and was pleasantly disappointed. I've written about the decline of food quality in the Iron Bound, with staples like Iberia and Fernandes going downhill faster than you can say Rodizio. It was with this expectation, or lack there of, that I met a group of friends at Adega and I couldn't have been happier. Food, service and ambience were reminiscent of the days when I used to go to Costello which became Iberia Peninsula back in the 80s. As to be expected, portions were gargantuan but quality wise, they stand way above anything I've had on Ferry Street for the past 10 years. From now on, when heading to Newark for dinner, I'll be sure to head here. Just remember that Rodizio is conspicuously missing so if that's your intent, you'll need to look elsewhere. Great place. Wednesday night after a project. We took our friends to Brazil town to look for a nice meal. This place looked nice enough. A bunch of people sitting outside which were patrons of the bar. We were looking for a meal so we went inside to the restaurant. Walking in, there was not a single soul on any of the tables. That should have been a clue. But we figured it's a Wednesday night so it's likely many people won't go out to eat. We wanted traditional Brazilian Picanha steak, we asked for it but they said they don't have it. They claim to be a Portuguese restaurant. Another clue that we should have left. But okay... Gave them benefit of the doubt. Ordered Paella Valenciana, Lobster, scallops and shrimp with Pene w/Vodka, a T-bone steak and for the appetizer, a raw oyster platter of 9 oysters for 15.95. We started with some pretty good dinner rolls, light and fluffy, crusty outside and warm, butter melted easily onto the roll. Oysters came and it was quite good, though it could have been cleaned better. I ended up having to spit out prices of oyster shells and sand. Now onto the real meal. Dug into the Paella which all Brazilians love, thinking can't go wrong because they should be making this all the time. Can you believe it came out like soup? There was literally soup on the bottom half as if someone poured broth in, not to mention the entire dish was very salty. Pretty lame for Paella to have watery remains. BUT the Seafood was well cooked, no complaints on that side. Pene, overcooked, Seafood in Pene also overcooked and overly salted. I just hate a Lobster tail that's overcooked and tough. The only GOOD thing about this meal was the T-bone steak. I mean if they can mess up steak as a Brazilian, it would be a cardinal sin! We ordered medium and it came out exactly medium. Just very lightly salted and perfect for our pallets. Charred in the right places and delicious. Another minus, and I chalk it up to the staff having absolutely nothing to do than to serve our one table, they were talking about us and my friends. Unbeknownst to them we have someone that speaks Portuguese. Bad for business. They should know better that people or not just bilingual but multilingual. All in all, not the best experience. Yes, I should have seen the warning signs and left. But I gave them a chance. If you have to go, stick with steak! read more

Such a romantic restaurant. Celebrated my guys 35th bday here about a year ago. I made reservations for special seating- meaning that if you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary, etc they can make accommodations ahead of time, for seating to make you feel like royalty! We had a beautiful loveseat for 2 that had everybody "Jelly". Not only is it a beautiful restaurant with a romantic & intimate atmosphere, the food was great and so was the service. My friend and I made an evening reservation to eat at Adega Grill. Upon arrival they seated us in a corner table where we waited 15 minutes to be served - our server dropped the menus and disappeared. A different server came and was taking our order and then our original server returned and told her she'll take our order instead, this was frustrating because now we had to repeat ourselves. The food came 25 minutes later, but was worth the wait because it was delicious! We had lamb chops and seafood paella. While we were still busy with our dinner, I decided to put in an order for dessert to come out when it's ready. We finished our dinner and the other server came and offered us take-home containers and packed our food up. 20 minutes later, we're still waiting for dessert and the other server comes back to ask if we're okay and if we would like anything else. I proceed to tell her that I put in a dessert order with our original server a while ago, the lady leaves and says she'll check on it. Mind you, our original server is standing a few feet away chopping it up and laughing with whom I assume was a regular customer/off-duty coworker. The second server walks to her and I assume told her we're waiting for dessert and our original server jumps up and runs inside. One side old, dim, very intimate. The other side, well lit, modern, also very intimate. The FOOD!!!!!! We had octopus, shrimp, and sausage as our appetizers. And for the mains we had steak, salmon, paella, lamb chops, everything was amazing! And you can't go here with out trying their desserts. Do yourself a favor and go to Adega Grill!!! Came here yesterday to celebrate a birthday. The ambiance is so nice. Our servers were extremely nice and friendly. Most of our plates tasted great. The paella manheiera could've had some more flavor and the seafood could've been cooked a little less. The lobster and shrimp were a little rubbery. The t bone steak was cooked perfect but also needed some more flavor. But my sisters grilled skirt steak was delicious. I came in with my baby in a stroller and they were able to accommodate us immediately with a lovely area. I think ppl forget we are living in times where things are scarce to find and it's to be expected if they get charged more for them then us as the consumer will have to get charged more. First off let me start by saying there's multiple entrances one for the restaurant and one for the bar. Since I was by myself I went to the bar. The restaurant inside looked great and fancy, perfect date night spot. The bar was very narrow and exactly what it is a bar. The bartender was super attentive. I ordered the Halibut special and it was delicious. The food was fairly pricey but well worth every penny. If I could give this place 6 stars I would! One of the best dinners I have had in basically my whole life. I came here for a 930 reservation on a Friday evening for a friends birthday. When I walked in, I immediately was greeted by the scent of beautiful food. The host told us there was a short wait to be seated, so we headed to the bar for some wine. Once we sat we ordered pitcher of sangria (delicious). For appetizer we shared Chorizo Espanhol (was grilled table side, What a show!) Caracois Recheados (escargot, melted in your mouth incredible!) Ameijoas a Bolhao Pato (steamed clams, with an amazing sauce we dipped our bread in). For main course I had the Paelha Marinheira it was absolutely delicious HUGE portion definitely good enough for 2 people. My friends had the Salmao Recheado (salmon stuffed with lobster) and Bife Porter House com Portobelo Recheado (the steak melted in your mouth and was BURSTING with flavor) Everything was so perfect and delicious that we were basically speechless. Came here for dinner on a Tuesday night, and it was surprisingly busy for a weekday! The restaurant itself is very clean, well decorated, and the seating is intimate and comfy. They even have a separate lounge and bar area. For drinks, the sangria is a must. As a vegetarian/vegan, there weren't many options (not a single vegetarian entree on the menu, which was quite disappointing). Luckily, the soup of the day was a vegetable soup which was pretty good. I asked if they could prepare a vegetable paella, but they couldn't since they make all the paella's with the seafood broth. They were able to whip together a vegetable pasta dish with a garlic and olive oil sauce, which was actually great! For dessert, I got the lemon sorbet. However, we quickly noticed the prices were handwritten on the menu and were higher than what was on the website. However, we had limited time so we ordered quickly and waited and waited and waited. After 45 minutes, The food finally came and was decent, but we didn't have much time to enjoy. The waiter did pour water for us out of a bottle without asking and when the bill came, we were stunned: We were charged $8 for bottled water We were charged $4 for a credit card processing fee A gratuity of $16 was automatically added on a $100 bill for a reasonable 16% tip. But, when we split the check, EACH person was charged a $16 tip, which equates to a 32% tip! They even had a place to ask for additional gratuities on the receipt! What should have been $50/person all in, wound up being nearly $70/person with all the nonsense fees and inflated pricing. I will NEVER go back and suggest you look elsewhere. It was not a calm nor was the meal enjoyable. The food was also subpar. We got the shrimp appetizers which were clearly frozen. And the escargot was not a delicate entree. It is possible for it to be too big. The lobster pasta was decent but the sauce was a little brown which is different from Italian style lobster pasta and to top it off the scallops were fishy. Not fresh at all. Would not recommend this place for the food. Although the interior looks nice. I simply would search for another restaurant if I was in the area again. read more

The wow factor is real. We were visiting NYC when friends residing in Hoboken suggested we go to Adega Grill before our flight. First impression: nice, clean, and kind of romantic. Really a nice place to go for a nice meal, romantic or in group, or even by urself. Its a non sporty attire place. So go wearing something nice. Really nice ambiance and food selection. The RED Sangria is delicious, a must try. Would suggest to get a pitcher, small will suffice for 2 people and a large one for a bigger group. I am giving this restaurant a 4 only because for the Shrimp, I would have loved them to be devained, a nice appetizer size and ohhh how nicely flavored they are. Went for dinner tonight with 2 friends and was very happy! As we sat down, we met Marco (GM) who was pleasant and friendly. (Take care of that hand!) We started with the Portuguese Chorizo and Oysters as appetizers. Both were a great way to start. My friends both ordered the Filet Americano which they both said was flavorful and tender while I had the Peito de Frango ao Alho (Chicken In Garlic sauce) which I can honestly say was one of the best dishes I have had in a long long time. The garlic sauce was so good, I poured it over the Saffron rice, broccoli and potatoes!!!! From the moment we sat down until we left, the service was incredible and the beer ice cold!
