Yaa is the braider and owner, this is my first time getting braided by her and she cared about my comfort and hair. This is so important since there are so many braided who braid too tight and don't care. You can tell Yaa whatever you need to and she will adjust for you, she cares about your hair. Hello All! If you are looking for a place to get your braids, twists, etc. done and done right. This is the place. I am starting my first year of college in DC and wanted to get my hair in Senegalese Twists. 1. They are definitely in style. 2. I've been wearing weaves for two years and am absolutely tired of getting up to do my hair. So I finally decided to go for it. I searched o Yelp for hair braiders in the area, specifically ones with expertise in this style. I cam across Adom Hair Braiding and gave the shop a call. I spoke with Yaa a week in advance and she was able to get me in 4 days before my flight to DC. Perfect timing! Yaa was great with communicated. She called be twice. Once to confirm some days before and again the night before. I came in early and we discussed the size, length, and type of hair I wanted for my twists. I also showed her a picture of exactly how I wanted them. Now, I was very nervous. I hadn't had my hair in anything but a weave in two years and did remember some of the negative reviews on her page. But I am here to say, my experience was nothing but perfect. She turned on the TV and encouraged me to get comfy. She started on my head at about 10:15 am and after the first twist, she trimmed it up and asked if that was how I wanted it. I told her yes, and boy did she get to work. Now I was in no rush so I told her to take a break for calls or food but she always asked first. We both took a lunch break and made great conversation. I know some prefer to just go in and get their hair done for relaxation and she can do that too. I am a talker so I would ask her questions and strike conversation every now and then. After every couple of hours, Yaa went twist by twist trimming the sides making sure they looked great. I really admired that and felt she never rushed through my hair. Now, I have a lot of hair so in terms of time, it did take her longer than expected to twist my hair, but she still did not rush. She was planning on picking up her son but called her husband to do it just so she could take time on my head. In total, it was about 7 hours including a good lunch break, but honestly, it didn't feel long. After all the twists were done, she went one by one snipping and trimming excess hairs again and then dipped them. She also put a nice oil sheen on my hair. I appreciated her thoroughness and communication about what she was doing, what she was putting on my hair and suggestions for how to maintain them. Yaa, you are the best. Thank you so much!!

I just recently moved to Oakland and I have been trying to find my regular hair salon and I think I just did! Ya is very accommodating, professional and reasonably priced. I made an appointment with her a few days in advance and she made sure that everything worked out as scheduling changed - I got Senegalese twists done and they turned out beautiful . I haven't such great, uncomplicated service in a long time and I am just grateful that I stumbled upon this place. I will be returning for some natural hair treatment and for future sew ins (she does it all) The shop is maintained and clean, there is street parking available. Also - she is open on Sundays also. read more

Yaa has been braiding my hair for over 10 years. She is always professional, caring and always does a beautiful job. She takes her time but is a fast Braider. Ya is one of the best hair Braiders in Oakland. I had a spot where my hair was literally 1/2 inch long and she actually was able to grab the hair without me having a headache afterwards! What I like is that her work is consistent and beautiful and she never braids so right where you may end up with alopecia. She cares about your hair and it shows in the way she braids and suggestions she may offer. You won't be disappointed here! read more

I guess I scheduled my appointment on the wrong day compared to the other reviews. First off my appt time was10 and she arrived at 10 with breakfast in hand. She ate while braiding my hair. Basic cornrows to the back for swimming class. The way she started the braids were like knots that started lifting by that Friday. I understand tag team braiding for individuals but 2 rows? So braids on the left didn't match the right. $175 they saw me coming in a jam and unable to get to LA. Never again!!!!! read more

So. Yaa used to do my kinky twist back in the 90's and I for the most part was always satisfied. So when I decided to go back to twist and braids, I decided to look her up. The first time upon my return, I scheduled with her and she had one of her assistants do it...came out ok. The next time I went back and instead of her saying that she didn't know how to twist spring twist, she messed up my $40 worth of hair and I had to take it down, go buy more hair and she re-twisted it. This last time I bought 100% ($200) human hair for braiding and this is what I got for $250...needless to say she will never get my business again. She has lost her touch. I would have been better off using one of her assistants. All she had was a bunch of excuses as to how it was late and she prefers to start early. That has absolutely nothing to do with my $450 that went down the drain. Its been 3 weeks and I have to take this mess down. There are better braiders that work from their kitchen...you'd do better finding one of them. Take my word and the pictures as proof. My pics are the spacey human hair ( from the top of muy head)posted in the pics section. read more

LOVE LOVE LOVE MY HAIR! ... i got my hair done last Friday, i am also a first time customer . 1st i was able to be seen on short notice so she earned stars just for that. i had weave with 1/2 tree braids. she was quick and professional , my hair came out amazing and i'm rough on hair-dos but after a week my braids(and hair) still look fresh. I will be returning . I received so many compliments. my hair was done by Yaa it was my 1st time having tree braids and she also educated me on how to maintain my hair. what else hmmm .... shop was clean, close to public transportation affordable i was and am very very pleased read more

I absolutely LOVE Yaa at Adom hair braiding!!!!! I have been going to her for my Senegalese twist since 2013. She has always been very accommodating and willing to work me in to her very busy schedule. Just this past weekend I went in for an appt for Senegalese twist, usually I get the medium size, but this time around I requested them a bit bigger ( since that's the thing nowadays) well once I got home, I did not like the size of them! I called Yaa and she was not upset at all that I was requesting to have my perimeter braids taken out and redone smaller but very patient and accommodating!! She fit me in during the week and redid them for me and I love them! My experience had always been an awesome one while at her shop! If you are looking for a very sweet, professional, and clean shop for any type of braids, please go see Yaa at Adom hair braiding. I've had my hair braided or twisted countless times in countless ways by many different hair braiders over 2+ decades! Yaa is truly up there, one of the best! She is fast and does a great job from start to finish. Her braids or twists last 2 months and I likely could wear them 3 months if I really need to. I had no issues with spacing, my braids or twists always look full. Never had my braids or twists unravel. She's professional, her shop is centrally located and she works with her clients to find the right style. read more

After a poor experience at another salon a week prior, I promptly made an appointment here. Although late at first, Yaa made up time and I was out of her chair in about an hour and a half, which is impressive for such an intricate braid-style. The prices here are reasonable and I enjoyed a relaxed environment and a complimentary bottle of water. She even went to a beauty supply to get extra hair for me so I didn't have to do it half braided. She was pleasant, professional, and gracious when I gave her a tip. Most importantly, I am really pleased with my hairstyle and will return. read more

I naturally have dark brown hair, and I came in with an inspiration picture asking for an autumn copper-brown reddish color. They were very confident that they could make the color I wanted happen, which made me feel comfortable moving forward with the service. After the first round, she was already getting ready to send me home, but I told her I was not happy with the results because my hair barely looked different from when I came in. It stayed mostly the same dark brown, except for some patchy plum-colored areas. I paid $120 for that first service. After I explained that I was unhappy, she recommended bleaching my hair to get me closer to the lighter copper-brown reddish color I originally asked for. What bothered me was that before starting the bleach, she never told me she would also be doing another client's hair color at the same time. While the bleach was sitting in my hair, there was one point where she was away for about 40 minutes. I was so nervous about the bleach sitting in my hair that I actually started a timer myself because I did not want anything to happen to my hair. She was also leaving at other times in between for around 20 to 30 minutes while working on the other client. I really wish my hair had been monitored more closely throughout the bleaching process, especially because of how light it ended up becoming. Instead of the autumn copper-brown reddish color from my inspiration picture, I ended up with orange and blonde hair. I paid another $230 for the second service, bringing my total to $350. I am extremely disappointed that I spent $350, went through two rounds of color and bleaching on previously virgin hair, and still did not receive anything close to what I originally asked for. If you have naturally dark virgin hair and are looking to go lighter, based on my experience, I would definitely not recommend this place.

Incredible experience working with Yaa. My hair braiding went so smoothly. Appointments are convenient to book. Adom Braiding is in a really nice studio with plenty to do in the area. Coffee and restaurants nearby in case you need a pick me up! It was such an enjoyable hair braiding session. We watched movies and chatted. It was so peaceful and supportive. Yaa doesn't braid tight at all! She is a very gentle braider but my roots were snatched perfectly. The parts and scalp area are so neat! I didn't want traditional box braids, I wanted something more with organic looking root patterns. I brought in my inspiration of Zoe Kravitz's boho box braids and Yaa totally nailed the concept. It came out exactly how I wanted. Just overall a very experienced and gifted braider. I loved being getting my hair braided, it didn't hurt at all. Most of the time when you get your hair braided it takes a couple days to a week to really let it set in. But I could sleep on my pillow the first night with no problems. The style I chose involved human hair and I think the loose ends I requested really made my hair have a lot of volume. I hope to return soon when I want this style again. I used to get my hair done by Yaa but moved to Washington DC two years ago. I couldn't find a decent braided there at all. I booked a flight to Oakland and flew 2800 miles to get my hair braided by her. She is amazing and does quality work. She detangles and blow driest hair before braiding unlike most braided. She also doesn't do those braids with huge parts that I hate.My hair looks amazing! read more

I got my hair braided for the first time and she did a great job on my knotless micro braids She doesn't braid too tight so it hurts and kept checking in to make sure I was doing ok during the process. My daughter was absolutely devastated as she had been waiting to get braids for a while. No return phone call or follow up from this shop. I can understand if it was just human error and they had forgotten to write down or reschedule the appointment...but ignoring multiple calls without following up to apologize or clarify what had happened was disappointing and unprofessional. Unfortunately can not recommend.

It kind of had a wiggish look but I was happy that she was accommodating and agreed to do it. Now I 100% regret it. I got a parking ticket as she talked and showed me pictures the full first 1 and some mins before actually even doing my hair. So overall I wouldn't return. While a credit card is required to book, I tried calling multiple times and only reached a full voicemail box that couldn't accept messages. I also sent emails and reached out via Facebook without any response. As a new customer, it's concerning to share payment information and not be able to contact the business with questions. The website also lacks important details. For example, a "curly haircut" is listed at $200, but it's unclear what's included (cut only vs. wash, condition, style, etc.). More clarity--or even a simple FAQ section--would be very helpful. Additionally, the listed phone number is labeled "informational only," but it doesn't provide any useful information and leads to an unusable voicemail. If phone contact isn't intended, it may be better to remove it or replace it with a monitored contact option. Overall, the lack of accessibility and clear information made me uncomfortable moving forward. I hope this feedback is helpful, as it may be impacting other potential customers as well.

Place is cozy but you and your stylist have adequate space. Appreciated the "tea room" where you can change, hang your coat, and grab a snack and/or beverage. Cut was phenomenal and Antoinette was efficient but friendly.
