After my mothers cat Mittens passed away, she brought her to the Erie County SPCA and paid for a private cremation. She was told she would receive a postcard when Mittens' remains were ready to be picked up. Everyday my mother checked for the postcard hoping she could finally bring her baby home. After more than a month with no postcard, she called multiple times and left voicemails and sent an email asking for an update. None of her messages were returned. Eventually, after being unable to get a response, she went to the SPCA in person. That is when she was told they had "lost" Mittens. Staff told her this had never happened before and that Mittens was likely "disposed of." When my mother asked what that meant, no one would give her a clear answer. She still has no idea what happened to her beloved Mittens, whether she was disposed of in the garbage, cremated with other animals, or something else entirely. She has been left with no answers, no closure and just told her that she would receive a check refund in the mail. What makes this even more painful is that our messages went unanswered for weeks. We can't help but wonder when anyone was planning to tell us what had happened. We only learned the truth because my mother went there herself. Losing a pet is heartbreaking enough. To then lose the opportunity to bring her home because of this level of carelessness has caused our family immeasurable pain. Mittens was deeply loved, and she deserved to be treated with dignity and respect. And she deserves to be home with her family. We would not want any other family to experience what ours has gone through.

They also host a variety of fundraisers throughout the year, which is why I recently visited the main shelter to pickup a basket I won from the virtual meat raffle. While I was there, all the employees (or volunteers) were busy doing something to take care of the cats. A few were in the parking lot cleaning carriers, the desk attendant was answering a woman's questions about a cat, and another came by to quickly retrieve my basket. During the short time I waited, I said hi to a few cats in stacked carriers near the entrance which I assume was temporary. The only reason I deducted a star was due to the overwhelming smell inside. I understand it's an old building with carpeting, so I'm excited that they're building a new cat campus and hope it will have a better air filtering system to make visiting the main shelter a more enjoyable experience.

I unfortunately did not read any reviews before taking my two beagles there. I want to start by saying the women who run Dodge were very nice and I am sure their intentions are in the right place. However, just because you love animals does not mean that you can care for them, which is the case for Dodge. When you go to the facility you can immediately see signs that the place is dirty and not well kept. The outside is bad, but the inside is worst. As soon as you walk through the doors you are hit over the head with the stench of dirty animals. The next thing that happens is you'll notice an overwhelming amount of small animals all being kept in a small space. I would say there were at least 10 cats as well as birds, lizards, gerbils, etc. all in this small dark space in cages stacked on top of each other. This is their only indoor space during the day where the dogs would also stay if they weren't outside. When you look to the other side of the room you see a row of kennels for the dogs, also all stacked on top of each other. I cannot stress enough how small, dark, and smelly this space is. I left my beagles there and felt sick to my stomach as I was driving away. I immediately turned around to get them because I couldn't bare the idea of them spending even one more minute there. I am tempted to notify a health inspector, as I doubt this place would pass an inspection. If the owners read this review: please shut down your facility for a short amount of time, hire cleaners, spend the money to create adequate room for all the animals, make sure the dogs and cats are separated, and hire additional staff to help you maintain the facility. I am deeply concerned for the animals currently in your care.
