I'm a huge supporter of the work Ten Lives Club does to take care of, and find homes for, thousands of cats every year. They also host a variety of fundraisers throughout the year, which is why I recently visited the main shelter to pickup a basket I won from the virtual meat raffle. While I was there, all the employees (or volunteers) were busy doing something to take care of the cats. A few were in the parking lot cleaning carriers, the desk attendant was answering a woman's questions about a cat, and another came by to quickly retrieve my basket. During the short time I waited, I said hi to a few cats in stacked carriers near the entrance which I assume was temporary. The only reason I deducted a star was due to the overwhelming smell inside. I understand it's an old building with carpeting, so I'm excited that they're building a new cat campus and hope it will have a better air filtering system to make visiting the main shelter a more enjoyable experience. read more

After a patient cancellation last week, I stopped by PetSmart to run a quick errand -- and unexpectedly came home with a new family member! Ten Lives was hosting a pop-up event featuring adoptable cats, and as I walked past the glass, a little Tuxedo kitten pawed and playfully chased after me. That was it -- he was mine! The adoption process took a little while, but only because a volunteer was training someone new. I completed all the paperwork easily through my phone and their iPad, and everything was explained thoroughly. I also love that Ten Lives offers a 14-day post-adoption vet service -- I've already used it since Wasabi (that's his name!) came home with a small kitty cold and a slight hernia. I can't say enough good things about this wonderful non-profit cat adoption agency. Be careful if you are leaving a kitten with Ten Lives Club to be temporarily fostered. You won't get him back. In April, we found a 3-week-old abandoned kitten underweight and suffering from an eye infection. We immediately took him to the vet and began treatment; bottle-feeding him every few hours, cleaning him, and giving him around-the-clock care. We loved him and knew we wanted to keep him. Wanting to give him the best possible chance for survival, we contacted Ten Lives Clubf or help. We asked if they could foster him until he was old enough to safely bring home -- with the understanding and reassurance that we would be able to adopt him once he was healthy and old enough. We asked this multiple times and were told yes each time. We brought him to Ten Lives Club three days later, heartbroken but hopeful, trusting their word that we would be called as soon as he was up for adoption. Even after we dropped off our cat, we called to check in. We asked if we could receive updates, pictures, or even stay in touch with the foster, but were told that wasn't allowed -- something we accepted. We were told we would be contacted in mid-July when he should be ready to be adopted, and that our names and numbers were on file for when he was ready to come home. We checked their website and Facebook daily, anxiously waiting to see him listed so we could bring him home. As of July 21, he still was not listed and we received no call. We called that day and again on July 24th. We were stunned to learn he had already been adopted -- a month prior. We spoke with Val K., who informed us that the foster decided to keep him. She told us that fosters "get first pick." That policy was never disclosed to us -- not verbally, not in writing. The policy is not on their website. When we talked with Executive Director, Marie Edwards, she told us that this policy is only shared verbally with fosters. We told the intake volunteer that we were not giving up on the kitten but we needed a temporary foster for him to give him the best chance for survival. We wrote on the surrender form that we wanted to adopt him. Had we known our kitten could be adopted by someone else without even a phone call from the Ten Lives Club, we would not have left him with them. What's so hurtful is that Val K. told us this situation has happened before. We feel completely heartbroken and betrayed. We gave our time, money (including donations to Ten Lives Club), and became emotionally invested. We spent months talking about our kitten and how excited we were to welcome him back. We shared his photos with friends and family and imagined him growing up in our home. We know now we won't be getting him back, and that's devastating. But we're sharing this story in the hope that it prevents others from experiencing the same heartbreak. We sincerely hope Ten Lives Club reviews their policies, improves transparency, and ensures better communication moving forward. read more

I tried to adopt a cat from the 10 lives club last year and they were extremely non compliant. On top of that I've heard countless negative reviews from friends and other cat rescue places that will remain unnamed. The 10 lives club is notorious for being a bad place to get a cat from. Its unfortunate that it ends up falling on the cats/kittens. The people that work there are mean and ruthless. I've even talked to a woman who used to work there and she said it was a terrible experience. This place should be closed. read more

I adopted a female cat on Dec 31, 2022 from the Eastern Hills Mall location. The adoption fee was almost $300, which I gladly paid for my beautiful girl. However, within the first few days of having her, she started displaying signs of being in Heat. I took her in at the end of January 2023 to the main location to have her checked out. Her belly was shaved to reveal her spay scar and blood was taken to test her Estrogen levels. I waited for months to get a call back in regards to her blood test results, none came. I called the main location several times asking for info on her bloodwork, no call back. I sent multiple emails asking for info, no reply from them. Finally! August 25, 2023 (8 months later!) I got a return phone call! During that phone call, it was confirmed FEBRUARY 8th 2023 that she does, in fact, have Ovarian Remnant Syndrome and I was informed by Jessica that they would cover the cost of her surgery to have the remnant removed. Over a month later, and repeated calls (again), I have still not heard back from anyone. I am so annoyed! So rude, not to return phone calls. They sure had no problem talking to me when I paid a $300 adoption fee! I adopted her, under the pretense that she was spayed and therefore would not go into Heat! **** Any other health issue or concern, I would obviously take care of myself but in this case, it was the Vet's negligence for leaving a piece of Ovarian tissue behind! That's on them. Not me. What makes it worse is that I work from home and had to BEG my landlord to allow me to get a cat in the first place. He finally agreed but with the stipulation that the cat I got had to be spayed/neutered. She has been going into Heat since I adopted her (lasts 5-7 days every 10 days!!!!) She "screams" and "sings Opera" all day long, and sprays near the windows! It is very difficult when I'm working on the phone talking to clients. My downstairs neighbors are complaining about her very loud vocalization and as hard as I try to thoroughly clean her spray spots, they still smell. The whole situation is a hot mess. I love her very much, she is my "baby" it's not her fault - I just need her medical issue taken care of before we get evicted! read more

I will admit I am biased. I am behind the scenes and I can tell you that the staff and volunteers are overwhelmed by the enormous strain they are exposed to. I have been there when we had a hoarding situation and a mama cat gave birth in her cage in the van she was transported in. I have been there when we celebrate an FIV cat getting adopted. I have been there when a difficult decision of euthanasia for a cat who was surrendered that had been hit by a car. We are not perfect. We make mistakes. We have also RESCUED 38,000 cats and kittens since its inception 19 years ago. I ask anyone who has a negative opinion to volunteer just ONE day to see the dedication of the staff and volunteers , and amount of work that needs to be done and the money needed to maintain Ten Lives, as we get no federal funding. Not to be confused with the Hen Wives Club, which is a place for married women to perpetually neverendingly relive their Hen Party night, featuring muscular male dancers, all sorts of cute fragrances, free purses and shoes, and the opportunity to choose-a-new-groom every weekend. Far more interesting than any of that human folly, are the lives of these little furry felines. This place takes wonderful care of hundreds of cats, every one has a name and a story and every one would like to go home with you and cuddle you for the bargain adoption fee of $50, which covers the shots and such. They send them out to stores to advertise their adoptions, and they nurse them back to health when they are not well. If not for organizations like this, the cat problem in WNY would be worse than it is, and there would be packs of them roaming the streets... ok, there already are, but you know what I mean. So take one home with you. Joanie, for example. Her little tongue hangs out all the time and she is so friendly. She needs a home. If you'd like to take her home, come and get her. The place is down on Route 5 not far from Mulberry Cafe (yum, yum). I got my darling boy from here, they were looking after him because he wasn't doing too well. Ever since I met him and he meowed at me and cuddled me, and I took a pic of him at a store on Sheridan Drive, I've felt that he wanted to come home. He's settling in well. Some of the other cats treat him badly, but he's the friendliest guy you'll ever meet and he's enjoying his new exciting life of relative freedom. Hopefully everyone will get used to each other. If you do take a cat home, and you have others, and you accidentally step on a paw, you might say "whose paw did I just step on?" and the cat in question will say "me... ow!" You can also get matching boy & girl cat outfits here. They're called "Hiss & Hers." And the male cats can get a baseball or football to play with, and the girl cats can get a new handbag or Purrs. There should be a claws in the adoption contract to say that every female cat gets a new Purrs, fur sure. And what's the difference between gasoline and a kitten tumbling off a couch. I'm honesty surprised anyone has had any good things to say about this organization. I've had two close friends adopt from here and two cats had issues that were left untreated under Ten Lives care. One had feline herpes, an infection in her eye, and a respiratory infection. The other had feline asthma that went untreated and was seriously underweight. The cat with the feline herpes contracted most if not all of its issues from the building they keep all the extra animals inside of. When taken in after adoption to the Ten Lives vet for a check up the table used to inspect the cat on was filthy and they didn't even know they were coming despite making an appointment. For the asthma inflicted cat Ten Lives recommend using their vet but when my friend called no one answered and no one ever called back until a week later which at that point the cat was already taken care of at another vet as the issues couldn't wait a week. They told my friend they called multiple times yet the call a week later was the first time they called back. Both are doing much better now but, I can only imagine what condition they would have been if they weren't adopted and given proper care. Now I should have avoided Ten Lives Club after all this but after going to a Petco to see a cat I saw online under SPCA care I happen to connect with a different cat which was under Ten Lives care. I called to make an appointment and a meeting was scheduled a few days later to meet the cat as they were helping somebody adopt a cat later that day. The day comes and I get to Petco and wait near the adoption area as the Ten Lives worker is talking to someone already. The worker then asks if I'm waiting for them and I say I'm waiting to meet the cat. They had no idea this meeting was scheduled and said no meeting was scheduled. I remind them and after some time and handing over the adoption pre-check paper that I filled out prior they remember. Didn't help as the person they were talking to before was currently adopting the cat I came to see. No organization is perfect but three different experiences from three different people at three different times isn't a mistake, its normal operation. Avoid this place at all cost and find somewhere else that actually cares about the animals they have. read more

I currently foster kittens through this shelter and love it! They are really helpful and flexible through the entire process. Bringing in the kittens for their appointments are quick and painless. I highly suggest that people foster some kittens if they have the capability of doing so. Fostering helps take a little off the tremendous load that the shelter currently deals with. I was hoping that the issues that we had with Ten Lives Club were a fluke. The cat we adopted came to us with ringworm, tapeworms, and a respiratory infection. After sending multiple emails, some of our expenses were covered. We had to surrender the cat for treatment and when we got her back a month later she had FHV... Just today while speaking to a coworker, I found out that they are currently going through a similar situation. Their adopted cat has a UTI and tapeworms. I see now that my issues were not isolated and I hope that action is taken in the future to prevent their mistreatment and negligence in caring for the animals they are responsible for. read more

I've recently adopted a cat from the 10 lives club at the eastern hills mall in mid October. I fell in love with a kitten from the second I walked Into the doors. I had an amazing experience with the whole adoption process and have no complaints there. After only having the kitten for 3 days he started experiencing signs of sickness. I brought him to the other location where the veterinarian is. I dropped him off and if I didn't know someone I would have never gotten ahold of someone and the poor cat probably wouldn't have made it as long as he did. The vet techs did everything they could and he ended up passing away of panleuk. Once again no complaints there because sickness does happen and that's not on anyone. They did everything they could. After this whole experience with my FIRST ever cat I've been to emotional about getting another one. I waited THREE weeks to hear from someone about getting my refund. I called, and called, left voicemails, emails and when picking up the kittens paw prints and fur clippings I asked once again, didn't get an answer. I understand that they are backed up and are busy. It only takes 3 minutes out of someone's day to call me back and refund my money when all I'm trying to do is move forward. I think it was unprofessional and personally will never go through them again. read more

This has to be the worst shelter I have ever visited in my entire life and I have been to quit a few in numerous different states, counties and towns. This shelter was dirty, almost every cat I saw was sick and let us speak about the customer service or lack thereof. Before coming to the shelter I had called multiple times inquiring about a couple cats and how to place donations no one ever called me back. Once I physically went to the shelter I waited up front with not even being greeted by someone and they weren't busy at all. It seemed to be a lot of people "working" but they just were standing in an office holding kittens, eating, and talking amongst one another. They seemed to be having a jolly good time and not really working at all. When the one young lady did finally notice me she turned back to her co-workers and said he can wait and they all started chuckling. They weren't even being discreet about their rudeness. I even overheard them speaking about some crazy lady upstairs and who was going to be the one to have to deal with her. I was shocked and so disappointed that this is how this place treats their customers makes you think how they treat their cats too. Finally about ten minutes went by I walked up to the office with a screen on the door entrance and asked if one of them could help me and one of the woman yelled and told me to wait in the lobby for someone to assistant me. I explained to her I have been waiting. Then a couple minutes go by and the same woman who yelled at me to wait, yelled at me again from her desk asking what I was there for. When I told her I was interested in adopting and I had a few cats in mind she cut me off mid sentence and told me to go upstairs and look around. Like excuse me miss I want to see the cats I am interested in. Not look around. I don't know these animals or this building. When I asked her if she could assist me to wherever upstairs was she said sorry I can't go up the stairs. At this point I turned around and walked out the door. I had ran out of patience with these rude inconsiderate people. Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere. Somewhere where they treat you like you matter. read more

Ten Lives Club is the hardest working animal shelter I've ever seen. Their staff & volunteers work endless hours and are always on call. The founder takes calls at all hours of the night and everyone gives it all they've got to make it work. They always say yes and figure it out afterwords, being a truly no kill shelter you know they're going to try their hardest to find each & every pet a good home. Their founder even takes home cats if they've been in the shelter for too long. Everyone works constantly to help continue to grow and stretch every dollar. You can feel good about giving a donation to such a great group. They really make a difference in our area, and to all the animals they rescue from high kill shelters out of state. I contacted TLC in Blasdell in hopes of getting a cat and received a very quick response as well as an offer to visit and find a cat that fits our home well. When I visited, we fell in love with a cat and we're promised we could adopt the following Monday (this was a Saturday). On Tuesday, (TLC was closed on Monday due to storm) I received a call saying that the cat had already previously been adopted but was in due to needing vet help and he would be headed back out to his adopted family home. I understand that helping and caring for animals takes up a lot of time and energy but was extremely disappointed that I got all of the supplies needed to adopt my cat and it could have easily been avoided, as well as the heartbreak our family is feeling because of our hopes to have this special kitty in our lives. This is a great organization for what they do but I just wish the communication was better with the adoption process and mix-ups like this didn't occur. read more

I have known Ten Lives club for a while and I have done many benefits and gave a lot of money to them. Last year there was a pregnant stray cat that needed to be trapped and brought somewhere and one of the workers at Ten Lives Club was going to do it and I offered my assistance and she became very irate and words were exchanged and unkind words were said on both sides between me and this Julie and Marie - but in the end the cat was captured and brought to the club. Flash forward to this year and there was another situation I had with an animal that was whacked with a stick so hard that it had a broken back and its legs were dragging and could not even walk and a broken pelvis. This was on a Saturday afternoon everything was closed & I had Marie's personal cell phone number that SHE HAD GAVE ME so I called it and she said to bring it in which I did and they had to put it down....now there was another incident of a cat that was in a park that I trapped and I brought over there and I gave $20 to one of the workers I believe his name was Joe & he told me that I could continue to call this cell number - there were business cards with Marie's number on it on the desk so I took one and when I called her to ask about this cat - I was told to never use this number again after she gave it to me that it was only for friends and family and I just lost all respect for this organization. Now when you call that phone number there's nobody manning the phones and it says that on the recording - you have to leave a msg with an extension ...now back in the day they didn't even have extensions. I ask you - what would have happened with that cat that had a broken back and pelvis on a Saturday afternoon and if I would have called the direct number and left a message and they were closing in 15-20 minutes that cat would have suffered until Monday so I had no choice but to call the cell so now I will never call the cell I don't think I will ever give any more money because the last $20 I gave I did not even receive a receipt like I did before by a very nice girl that worked there. I'm not even working and every time I bring an animal there I give at least 10 or 20 and when I asked on the website about the cat & that i donated $20 they didn't even say thank you for all your donations or nothing they are like all about the money and after reading that one review by the one girl about how unclean the place is that worked and the other guy that said their cats had tapeworms and such - I don't think they're as good as I thought they were. Sure they may not kill the cats there a no kill shelter but they are very unprofessional and for this girl Julie and for Marie to hold a grudge over a year and to not help me trap this poor cold cat in the park which I had to do myself is very petty.... they would rather hold a grudge over a few swear words than to come help me and so i brought the cat in I get nothing but attitude so you know what no more money from me and I hope you get more lawsuits up the ying-yang and one day I will make my own organization and blow them right out of the water. Such a shame it should be about the cats and it's all about money and they're not even being properly taken care of and living in horrible conditions. The one girl even said that Marie walks by these cats that are in intense pain like she doesn't even care and looks right through them. Disgusting. read more

My daughter and I have been looking for a kitten, since we recently lost our cat in a tragic accident. We came in today and found that the staff at the galleria location were among some of the rudest people I have encountered in a long time. There were 4 employees gossiping and when I wanted to ask a question they made me feel as if I was interrupting. They quickly answered me and turned their backs and carried on.mind you, some of their replies were rude. We felt uncomfortable and left. I second all of what Fox said. Go get a kitty from this shelter. They do so much for this community. As we Buffalonians are all too aware of, most of our winters are horrible. Nail-bitingly horrible if you get the right year. This past winter in particular was dreadful. And who did we happen to find but a little kitty meowing hysterically in the middle of the street. This kitty was skin and bones. He looked like a newborn because he was so tiny. We took him inside from the harsh winds and put food in front of him as he shook in a blanket we covered him in. As he ate, he cried because he was so hungry. He took a bite, cried, drank water, cried, repeat. This cat was starving so badly that even eating was painful for him. We debated keeping him because he was just so darn lovable. He made it a point to rub his face against your leg and purr in your ear. But with two cats and two dogs, we already had a zoo. We went to work calling every possible shelter in the area. SPCA in Erie County, in Niagara County, independent shelters around Western New York. Everyone said no. Finally someone gave us a name that we could trust to help this kitty out. It was none other than Ten Lives Club, located on Lakeshore Road. We called and the first thing they said was "We can definitely take him." What a relief to know that despite having a hundred cats available for adoption, they were willing to take in more. My parents drove the kitty to the shelter and made a donation to the shelter. The shelter named him Olaf, because he was a frozen kitty when they got him :) Not to mention, Olaf was TWO years old when we brought him to the shelter. We thought for sure he was only a month or two because he was so tiny. Poor guy. My parents said all the cats were well taken care of and when they entered the area where all the cats were kept, they didn't make a sound. They were all sleeping peacefully or otherwise pretty content. We comment often about Olaf and how he's doing and hope he's with a good family somewhere. All cats in every shelter deserve a loving home but the work that Ten Lives does for the cats in Western New York is pretty remarkable. Staff I dealt with was very rude, completely unempathetic, and after I questioned my new adopted cat's ability to integrate into my house, Marianne, a staff person, told me to bring the cat back, begged me to. I just wanted some advice regarding the fact that my new cat escaped from her safe haven and got into a tiff with my old cat. They were both perfectly fine and were probably just figuring out their hierarchy. I made a mistake, but I have adopted and fostered many cats and it was not the end of the world, although it felt like it was when I left that ill-fated message with her and then had a phone call with her afterward. After I brought her back and just wanted to know how the cat was doing, she wouldn't even respond to my messages.no compassion... You need that if you're going to try to help cats, ironically. If the people that are working for this nonprofit are that disillusioned with humanity, then the place should shut down, or new staff should be found...for the cats' sake. read more

I love this shelter! There are so many different facets of animal welfare going on at all times here from rescue, to community service, human service, community education, events....I could go on and on. On one visit there I had the pleasure of meeting some young adults there volunteering for community service hours while a group of volunteers were meeting to discuss further fundraising for the animals in need and there were kids dropping off some donated items they collected at their birthday party.
