If you're diabetic, or help take care of someone who is, such as a family member, it's such a cheap cost, for a day of up-to-date panels and talks about different aspects of diabetes care and ongoing research, one-on-one consultation with medical experts specializing in the disease (dentists, podiatrists, endocrinologists, nurses, and so on), lots of free swag (recipes, gadgets/tools, info handouts, etc.) from medical companies and offices and community health organizations, cooking demos (when I went, it was by the wonderful, Pacific-Rim-cuisine genius Chef Mavro, who also prepared the 3-course lunch included in your ticket) and healthy snacks, and even a concert by Hawai'i pidgin comedian Frank DeLima (who's a diabetic himself). Every year, the sessions and their speakers are different, with current information on exciting medical studies, new technology/pharmaceuticals, helpful care practices, and the implications for diabetes, explained in clear, easy to understand ways. It's positive, fun, and community-oriented. There's even a special, all-day track for medical specialists such as doctors, dentists, and nurses, which focuses on treatment and patient care/education. My healthcare provider attended this conference, and went to entire different events than I did. The information is not just medical but also social and emotional (how to get your loved ones, who have diabetes, to follow new diet and nutrition guidelines, as well as test their blood sugar regularly; how to deal with diabetes-related depression; etc.). You will feel supported and more knowledgeable, but the process is not boring or lecture-y. You get so much more than is worth the relatively small registration fee you pay. I talked over the phone with Dr. Argoud on October 22nd with my concerns of extreme fatigue I've been suffering from. He stated thyroid cancer doesn't cause fatigue. I asked if I could show or read to him and article from Dr Gary Clayman who is an expert on thyroid cancer. Dr Argoud stated "i don't have time for this" I calmly replied that I didn't feel heard. Dr Argoud replied "then find a new endocrinologist. I will send you the termination letter in the mail" and hung up on me leaving me abandoned durring a very hard part of my life. Left me scrambling to find a dr that I could establish care with before my surgery date. He's ignored requests for a detailed explanation of why he decided not to see me.

I've spent 56 minutes on the phone just with this office in an attempt to schedule an appointment. I was told that labs, progress notes, insurance auth would be required. I've had multiple calls with the referring office to get this documents sent over. After all is said and done, my insurance auth expires within 3 months of referral while dr. Hupfeld doesn't have any availability for 6 months. This has been a frustrating process and I hope improvements can be made to improve the patient care process.

Prior to moving back I was aware that Balboa hospital's pediatric endocrinologist was booked so I was hoping that my insurance would approve a civilian doctor to handle my daughters needs. We were referred out to Dr. Franklin and thus far have had our second appointment. While I felt a little stressed (personally) on my first visit - the doctor did her best to understand my toddlers history while also going over confusing and limited information from the military treatment facilities paperwork. I felt a yelp was warranted now that I have visited the office twice. Dr. Franklin does things a little different than the MTF's as far as labs and quite honestly- I like her system better. My toddler used to get labs done the same day as her appointment. I used to wait months for results to be given to me in person. Dr. Franklin on the other hand like things done 2-weeks before your next appointment. That there is more realistic and knowing that the most current results vs something many months ago. Dr. Franklin, in my humble opinion, is very thorough and to the point, she does no beat around the bush, she talks in a manner that you understand and don't leave her office still questioning results or what is needed on your end. Dr. Franklin and her staff have always been very welcoming making my often shy toddler ease up and warm up. Could have asked for a better doctor on the west coast for my daughter.
