First, be advised that Dr. McKay has paid people to write reviews for him, so at least some of these reviews were solicited. I know that was happening a few years ago (his patients - me included - were offered a $50 gift card to write a positive review). I saw Dr. McKay seven years ago, to have some upper dentures done, with supporting implant posts. I had no upper teeth, as I had previously had an upper plate done that I could not tolerate. I had most of my lowers, but he advised pulling and doing implants for them, too. I have learned since that, if someone says "you will probably have trouble with it in the future", your best reply should be "then I will deal with it in the future". Reputable dentists always try to save natural teeth...then why did Dr. McKay recommend pulling several? Also, two of my lower molars had previously been replaced with full gold crowns; though I told Dr. McKay I wanted them back, once pulled they mysteriously disappeared (he said his dental tech must have lost them). I wouldn't have let him pull my lowers, but for his convincing me that it would be the best approach (I feel so foolish now). He burned my gums with the laser he was using to re-open my upper gums after they had been sutured closed to allow healing, but he never acknowledged what happened, nor did he help me with the intense pain I experienced when I went back two days later...he simply dismissed my concerns, saying, "That's just sore gums". He was not the one who was supposed to be doing that procedure, I have since found out; it is the surgeon's job. Although implants are supposed to be trouble free, I have had nothing but trouble with them. I have had tremendous pain and recurring infections for the past seven years. Initially, I was going back repeatedly to Dr. McKay to try and resolve the problems, but he never found anything wrong, just suggested making another (billable) appointment. It seemed that he became uninterested in helping me, saying on more than one occasion, "I don't know what to tell you..." before walking out of the room without another word. His usual response became to ignore (or simply not respond to) my request for help. Regardless of repeated visits, nothing was ever done about the issues I was having with my implants. I have recently learned, since going to another implant dentist, that I was never an appropriate candidate for implants to begin with, and they should not have been done. I think Dr. McKay and his surgeon knew that, but are so focused on money (I was private pay) that they just did it anyway (eight implant posts and two full plates cost several tens of thousands of dollars). They charge more than most, btw. What made me finally stop going back, though, was a true breach of the dentist's and his surgeon's ethics. One of my upper implants was troublesome, and when I saw the xray, it clearly showed that the implant had perforated my sinus (confirmed by another implant dentist). Dr. McKay said nothing about it, but the surgeon who did the implants, Dr. Thomas Kang, said that I had "some infection at the end of the implant, and it can be cleaned with a special laser, for a low, flat fee of $1000". I don't know what would actually have been done during the "special laser" treatment (they don't clean infections with lasers!), but I never went back. I had to have one of the lower implants removed a year after they were done, which even Dr. McKay said was unusual. I am now faced with having the remaining lower implants extracted, and having a full lower jaw reconstruction and gum grafts (plus a new lower plate once all that is done)...all because I was not a good candidate for implants, and they failed to do a bone graft of my lower jaw, something that is routinely done. My lower gums have deteriorated to where most of the threads on the implant are visible, and my lower jaw bone has become infected several times. That a dentist would put money above the health of a patient is abhorrent to me. The only positive thing I can say about Dr. McKay is that he makes beautiful teeth. However, although I've been able to wear them most of the time for appearances, I've never been able to eat properly with them, as he never finished the upper plate (kept putting off replacing two of the liners that attach them to the implant post) so it slides around. Many times I have had to go without one of the plates for a week or two because of pain and/or infection. It is interesting, too, that there was an incredibly high turnover of his staff; besides his office manager and main assistant, I never saw the same staff member twice, even initially, when I was having frequent appointments. I would like to know why staff didn't stay. My advice, in closing, is shop around. Compare rates, do your research. Don't rely on the dentists' advertisements. Doing your homework could save you years of pain and suffering (and thousands upon thousands of dollars). read more

Anyone can pay for a ton of advertising but to actually care about your patients and do what they ask for and follow through, not to mention show up for work is not something Dr McKay does! He is an absolute ass! I got in an accident and lost my front tooth, I specifically asked him to use white in the front of my mouth! He used silver:( I saw an ad and figured he would care and do the best job and I told him someone was more $ and he joked but was serious and said well looks like I have to raise my prices. I went in so many times taking a few hours for nothing because he didn't even show for appointments on numerous occasions. Also when he did, he just talked to me and did nothing! I wasn't there to visit!!!!! I had a broken computer and he sent me an email telling me he recommended all four Front teeth be veneers.....I didn't get that email so my bill was substantially higher than I expected. I have since asked him to fix this silver tooth in the front of my mouth many many many times over and he has not even returned my calls. He has said he would do it but not guarantee it! Yet still fails to call me back. I felt I had to write this to save anyone else from watching the great ads on television and falling in to the trap of this horrible experience I had to endure. I have a few serious pet peeves: Razor commercials that try to convince me there is some essential difference between men's and women's razors (there isn't), cyclists who insist on speeding by me on the sidewalk when I am walking (YOU ARE A VEHICLE), and being made to feel like I don't know what's best for my own body. I used to go to Dr. McKay's office for my normal dentistry work, but got fed up when every six months I had to fend off upsells. And by "upsell" I mean he would tell me I needed all four of my wisdom teeth out, and I would ask why, and he'd be unable to give me a good reason, and then I'd decline and he'd sigh heavily, as if I'd just made the worst decision ever. I thought I had for awhile, but the idea of surgery in my mouth freaked me out, and I've never even had a cavity in my fully-erupted wisdom teeth, so I didn't really see the point. They were healthy! "They could cause problems later," he'd say. I'd furrow my brow and say "Well, I go to the dentist every six months; I think you'll catch problems early enough to do something about them when they start happening, right?" I don't mind saying no to my doctors, but he was pretty insistent that this was a non-negotiable thing, and he tried to convince me that I was just WRONG, which I found completely irksome. He also offered me a $500 nightguard and some tooth whitening. I guess I can't be too hard on him because it IS a cosmetic dentistry place, and partially my fault for going there when I just wanted a basic cleaning and to be checked for problems. But! Long story short, I got a new dentist. When I asked if my wisdom teeth needed to come out, my new dentist said flatly "No." I like my new dentist. read more

So far, my thoughts are positive. It not that I don't like the dentist, I don't like or enjoy dentistry and that is because since 1969 I have been literally tortured in the dentist chair. As a result, my dental experiences have been limited over the years. I heard of Dr. McKay several years ago, in fact I listened to him on the radio for quite some time and thought again about getting serious about taking care of my teeth. I need professionalism, know how, proactive suggestions, up to date technology and experience. I do want to waste my time going through a process that will not yield positive results. So far I am convinced that Dr. McKay and his office will deliver on that need. I suppose I will let you know how the process goes. I've had a terrible experience with Dr. McKay in Seattle. It's actually been the worst dental experience I've ever had and I previously had bonding, veneers and my wisdom teeth removed. I've been having eight porcelain veneers put on and it's been an extremely painful, expensive and time consuming process. He also used the laser on my gums to give me a less gummy smile and to elongate my teeth. I would definitely not choose his office again for any service. Not to mention the $25,000 price tag I paid. I think that Dr. McKay probably has a decent eye for cosmetic dentistry; though I'm not quite convinced of this because after he put the temporaries on my teeth, I noticed that one tooth was longer than the other. I pointed this out to him during my next visit and he measured the teeth and said that one was indeed longer than the other and he would even it out. I don't think the patient should be pointing this out and he should I have measured all my teeth in the first place. The reason I'm going to a cosmetic dentist is so my teeth can be completely symmetrical. I often felt rushed during the appointments when Dr. McKay was working on my teeth. My temporaries got stained and I essentially had two black front teeth for two weeks. Two of the temporaries fell off (they place temporaries on the teeth while they are making the porcelain veneers) and I swallowed one while eating and choked on it until it went down, which was frightening. The first temporary that fell off was extremely painful and that tooth was very sensitive, making it hard to eat or drink or even function. The temporaries were very painful and it was hard to chew. He tried to put the porcelain veneers on today and put them on and showed me, but then took them all off because he said my gums were too infected and red. I didn't appreciate him training the new dental assistant who was working on my teeth because he kept saying things like this is not how gums should look. I'm allergic to latex and him and his staff frequently forget this fact. In addition, the water they use during treatment is often sprayed on my neck and goes down my shirt. During my visit today, he didn't numb my mouth enough before injecting my gums with the numbing medication. The injections were extremely painful, much more painful than the first visit when I had the first set of temporaries put on. Toward the end of the procedure, today, I was in a great deal of pain because the numbing cream was wearing off. After I called out in extreme pain, he continued. It's a 1.5 hour drive for me to get to his Seattle office. When I agreed to having the procedure done, they said that they would do my best to minimize my driving time. However, each time I speak with him or his staff they forget that I am coming so far for appointments. There were two quite unnecessary appointments: one to choose the color of my new veneers, which could have been combined with another appointment and a tissue check appointment with a dental assistant where the dentist wasn't even in the office that day. read more

If I could give no stars I would! Dr. McKay was condescending during my exam, neither did he even bother to shake my hand on introduction or departure from the exam room! He commented if I wanted "everything repeated in medical terms?" , that is his job! I did speak with the office staff today, I voiced my view and why I would not be returning. I did not ask for an apology, yet none was even offered! I paid $145.00 to be insulted and treated as a lesser person. Just because he may be a good Dr. does not give him the right to act as such. I have sensitive teeth and was interested in Sedation dentistry. So I tried him out. At fist he seemed like what I was looking for, everything looked modern and he seemed to know what he was talking about. I found their receptionists a overly friendly and it came off as a bit faked. When I met him he seemed knowledgeable and willing to answer questions. The problems beyond this is he is one of the more expensive dentists there are. He also treats people as a salesman would treat potential buyers rather than patients. I spent a large amount of money for work and got it done, that part worked with few hitches. Not perfect, but better than other dentists. I had frequent pain with the crowns and he kept suggesting that I wasn't doing something I was supposed to and would grind them to see if it made them fit more and then quickly move on. This happened several times with no success. Turns out one of the roots were so traumatized it died and I had to have a root canal. When the highly priced mouthpiece he sold me was lost in a move he offered to replace it since I had spent so much $ on dental work. He then changed his mind at the last moment and said he would offer a discount but they didn't do anything wrong and wouldn't be liable for it. I said no to this as with all the money I had spent I didn't really have the cash to do that. He wasn't happy but accepted it. They then kept trying to get me come in for therapy that they said I needed based on other work he had done. I said I didn't have any more money than before and it would have to wait, I would call when I could. His agents kept calling for several months trying to get me to come in for this therapy before stopping calls completely. These weren't even basic dental procedures(i.e. cleaning) this was some sort of gum therapy they felt I should get and were rather pushy about it. In summation, seems to know what he is talking about, but wouldn't advise his service due to the way he approaches his patients or some of his business practices. read more

Their staff is extremely attentive. My new veneers look amazing - my orthodontist said she has never seen better!! My wife went for internal bleaching on a discolored tooth and now you would never know there was an issue. They go above and beyond for even the most basic cleaning. Highly recommend! read more

My sister is getting a full mouth restoration to fix problems from that developed from a very young age. She had many problems and the fixes required her jaw to be broken, wired shut for a year, incisors stuck in the roof of her mouth that had to be pulled down via wires into place, among other things. Dr McKay has in a very short period of time been able to adjust her bite with a "deprogrammer" device that she wore for 3 weeks. He was able to prep her mouth for a full mouth restoration, evening up her bite and tooth lengths and straighten her smile. It is an amazing transformation just with the temporaries. She and I are so happy with the results. Dr. McKay has a lot of talent and a great sense of humor. Dentistry does not have to be scary! He makes the whole process better than you might imagine! For the insane amount of money they charge for the implants, the doctor did not want to be even a bit flexible with his schedule, so I don't have to use my vacation just for the consultation. I have been working with Dr. McKay and his staff for over a year. Before Dr. Mckay, I had the good fortune to work with excellent dentists in Seattle and San Francisco where I lived for 25+ years before I moved to Seattle in 2005. My previous dentists were highly skilled and personable with excellent staffs. They were comprehensive in their care and predominantly advanced in their techniques ... However, there was one thing lacking. They effectively addressed the issues at hand, but showed little to no interest in addressing the care of the mouth in a systemic way. ... I have found working with Dr. Mckay, Cris Duval RDH and the staff to be a life-altering experience. This is not hyperbole. I was looking for an office that went beyond the norms of good dentistry ... I wanted an office that uses the state of the art equipment for detecting mouth cancer, an office that addressed the systemic issues of gum and teeth care, an office that did not settle for the mundane - that is to treat only the symptoms and not the causes. The topic of acidity in the mouth and its connection to inflammation, gum disease, tooth decay and disease throughout the body seems to be a growing body of literature. ... Dr. McKay and Cris Duval are well-educated in the value of PH balancing for oral health which can be the gateway for health throughout the body as I understand it from my own research. I have no medical credentials, just a high interest in optimal health ... I left my previous dentist because the hygienist was not using state of the art cancer detecting equipment - I knew that this equipment was used in Dr. Mckay's office. What I did not know until my first office visit,was that Dr. Mckay and Cris were ahead of the curve in working on systemic oral health for their patients by integrating PH balancing into the treatment plan. For years, I had been aware of the value of trying to maintain a less acid and more alkaline system. Although, I did not yet know of doctors who were incorporating it into their practices. ... To be specific: On my first visit, Cris did an overall evaluation of the health of my gums and teeth. I had some bleeding and tenderness in my gums. A few of my teeth had occasional pain and discomfort. We talked at length about the PH readings of my mouth - which showed a high acidity in my system. Being familiar with PH readings, I was not surprised that I was so acidic. What was refreshingly surprising, was the concern of Cris and Dr. McKay that this issue be addressed first to raise my overall oral systemic health (and perhaps health in other body systems.) Dr. Mckay and Cris talked with me about a plan for my best oral health. Dr. Mckay could have easily talked to me about a crown or two, along with some other work. That could have been justified. That would have been the quick and more profitable way for him. However, he and Cris worked out a treatment plan for me that first addressed my systemic oral health. This included a deep cleaning procedure with Cris to get my gums to begin to heal and restore. I was put on a regiment of using a PH balanced toothpaste and rinse. Cris would check me every three months to see if my gums were in fact healing ... at the very least, they wanted to give my gums and mouth a chance at better systemic health before any intensive work would be advised. One year later, my gums are no longer sore or bleeding, I no longer have occasional pain in a few of my teeth, my oral PH readings are much improved ... and I can easily speculate that this approach has enhanced my overall health in addition to my oral health. To be certain, this approach has saved me a lot of money in expensive work that would have only addressed the symptoms and not the cause ... My review of Dr. Mckay, Cris Duval RDH, and their entire staff is that they are excellent and work hard and consistently to be the very best at what they do. They are thoughtful, thorough and informed ... They take their time. They follow through. Cathy, one of the office administrators did a lot of leg work to help me with my insurance reimbursements. She initiated the work and without hesitation put in a significant amount of time to resolve an issue. ... In summary, It has been my experience that Dr. McKay puts optimizing patient's oral health over profit. ... My experience with the entire staff of Dr. McKay, as I said in the beginning of this review, has been life-altering. You pay for this attention to detail and it results in predictable long lasting results. This is a great place for people who don't like going to dentists. State of the art technology and highly skilled staff mean super results and MUCH less pain and anxiety. You will pay top dollar; we pay the difference between what our Dental Plan will pay and the amount McKay charges. And I do wish they wouldn't use the relentless selling techniques they do ( for products, such as a very expensive line of oral hygiene products, and for services, such as whitening, etc.). But I keep going back because their office makes going to the dentist actually enjoyable. And for me, that makes it worth it. read more

If I could give any lower score than nothing, I would. This place used me, stole over $30,000 from me and never once straightened my teeth. I went to him to just get six straight teeth and I was quoted an entire price of $19,000. This dentist worked an a dead tooth to do a very unnecessary root canal since it was an already dead tooth and merely cleaned the existing teeth. I was so distress by my husband's recent death and under medications that I didn't even realize that they were just stealing my money. THEY ARE NOT TO BE TRUSTED. I met with Dr. McKay and his patient's advocate, Maria, before I came upon these yelp reviews that include a couple of negative ones. I was puzzled because their comments did not resonate with my experience whatsoever. I read them more closely and found some of the comments didn't have much to do with the dental work itself. So, well anyone can have a personality clash, I care more about the work! So I checked out the before's and after's, listened carefully to what he told me we could do, and followed my gut instinct. I've had a great deal of dental work since the 1970's, very unpleasant some of it. I know what it's like to be in that chair more than most. I wanted to wait until the work was done and I could see if he met all my expectations and now I can wholeheartedly say that I love this dentist. He has worked miracles on my mouth, met my personal goals and some I didn't think we could do, cared about my personal timeline which we met easily, and he made me look better than I've ever looked in my life. His work straightened out my chin and face a little, gave me a solid bite that I've never had and a cosmetic finish to write home about! I give him a solid A+. While it's true that I was prompted to write this review because Dr. McKay's office sent out an email offering a gift card if I wrote a review , I would highly recommend his services to anyone looking for a cosmetic dentist even if a gift card weren't involved. AC&LD is not the cheapest/most affordable dentist in town. Actually the prices are in the high end but when you're getting cosmetic work on your face (your smile) you don't want to pinch pennies! I had a horrible experience at one of the more "affordable" dentists and had to have my front crowns replaced by Dr. McKay a few months after they were put in. They were esthetically very bad, and I learned the lesson that you should just do it right the first time. I ended up paying for my crowns twice since I had to have them redone. Dr. McKay is highly skilled and he will make your smile look fantastic. When getting cosmetic work done (at least more major work like crowns/veneers) just go to the best and get it done right the first time. You'll save yourself a lot of trouble and money in the long run. read more

Very beautiful and seemingly efficient set up. However, 5 1/2 years after spending over $30,000 to have full veneers put on my top teeth by Dr. McKay as well as two bottom crowns, I have had nothing but problems. One crown fell off after 1.5 years and Dr. McKay charged me almost $500 to put "his faulty crown" back on, yet he never actually spent any time on it he had his DA do the work and he simply stopped in to check things over. Now I was just told by another reputable local dentist that several of the veneers were not put on correctly and Dr. McKay apparently used faulty products for the crowns. These crowns from 3M were apparently known to chip and should not have been used. Now I have 3 that are chipped enough to need replacing. I would not at all recommend using Dr. McKay for dental work. In my opinion he is at the top end of cost for dentists, obviously uses lower quality products which he does not stand behind (thus the charge to reseat a faulty crown). Rarely do I post reviews on here, but the amazing service I have received at Dr. McKay's office is next to none! I found the office through a specific Google search as I was looking for a friendly staff who would not judge and help provide relief after years of not seeing a dentist - after an extremely negative experience. Not only did the consultation assuage my fears, I actually looked forward to the first visit with hygienist and now can't wait for my meeting with Dr. McKay. The consultation was extremely thorough and Colleen was not only happy to listen, she remembered details on my next visit that even I had forgotten I had told her! The hygienist was more than accommodating - she explained every part of the process clearly and calmly, checked in throughout the cleaning and made me feel very comfortable.
