I will first start out by saying as one to whom has done electrolysis before, that it is impossible to please everyone everywhere and every time! One could at the least receive from those abroad, their honesty, straight forwardness and direct sincerity..... In not knowing all of Paula's personal and professional background, that is the one item you can count on, is her willingness to say the truth!! Her work ethic's are superb, you walk in, say a few niceties, get on her table and right to work she goes, and yes she will converse with her clients as she works... Yes electrolysis hurts, but not being in the form of which I have wanted to be in since before the 60's, that hurts so much more! I've been with Paula for roughly 1 year and it's the best decision I have ever made. I am 35 years old and my ethnicity is half hispanic half Caucasian. I struggled with thick, black hairs under my neck and belly button. I constantly plucked, shaved, waxed and cried for years. I had scars from digging under my skin and doing surgery on myself to get the hairs gone. I obsessed daily, unable to find any relief from the hair. I wore turtlenecks and styled my hair to try and hide the area. People would ask me if I had burned myself from the scarred skin and I felt embarrassed. The hairs on my neck had been caused by a "test patch" performed by laser treatment when I was 19, luckily I didn't do it on my whole face! But as the years went on, the area became worse. Two years prior I lived in Pasadena and had been religiously seeing an electrolysis, feeling that it was my last hope for escape from my nightmare. I never plucked and only shaved between sessions, as instructed. Over a year and nothing seemed to get better. I felt hopeless. I moved to Long Beach and sought out someone local to me and found Paula. I walked into the salon, a discreet location in North-East Long Beach. I found Paula in the back room of a salon, with a smile. She immediately went over the rules of her work and expectations as a client. I listened and followed her lead. She was direct, but I didn't mind - we were both there for a purpose. Her method has a one word description: aggressive. She blasted my hairs every session, never demanding more money from me for longer sessions and refusing tips. I walked out sore, red bumps and scabbing. Over the months I was feeling like our efforts were never going to bring the result I desperately needed. Until one month, I realized the hair hadn't grown in as thick, the hairs were lighter, softer and just not present. It was the miracle I had been waiting for! I cannot thank Paula enough. Maybe some people don't need that kind of treatment, but I did. I needed someone who was willing to not look at me as a cash cow, but a person who needed a problem solved and she was going to do it. I needed someone who was willing to care more about the long term result than if I felt comfortable during the session (you're getting electrocuted for goodness sakes!). I waited a couple months to post this in case I was overreacting. However I feel that my WARNING here is very much essential. Paula is NOT SOMEONE TO TRUST!!! My experience: I chose Paula despite several iffy and outright negative reviews because she's in my Kaiser network and was the closest. During my short time with her, around six sessions I think, I was confronted with a large variety of red flags. 1- Scarring: My chin is still scarred from the treatment, something she told me was normal and "would go away with time" however I am now seeking microneedling and potentially laser resurfacing in order to fix the scar dimples she made in my chin in such a short amount of time. She uses VERY HIGH settings that hurt so bad despite me using benzo, lido, teracane cream at max strength. I literally heard the cracks of electricity every single zap. I thought this was normal and she told me it was fine. This led to me crying every session, during and after. I thought I was a total wimp and extra and whatever. Lots of self gaslighting. Now that I've worked with another electrolysist for twelve sessions I have not once cried and have not once scarred. My skin no longer peels off immediately after like when I worked with Paula. 2- HYGEINE! Paula never sanitized or treated my skin before treatment, and though she rubbed aloe on after, there was nothing done for antimicrobial prevention, which explained why I broke out after my treatements. Again, the current electrolysist I use is like night and day here. She cleans a small area, treats it, then uses a machine to kill bacteria after. Paula would also pick up her phone, touch everything, and even cleaned her ears a few times with the gloves she was using when working on me. Then just kept going without changing gloves or even just using alcohol to clean them. It is such a hygenic nightmare! 3- Customer Service: In general Paula is a strange persont that is hard to connect with. That doesn't matter though in the long run. Her big service issues came from her constant grumpiness and attitude, how she made me feel as a client, and many of the "transgender" questions she somehow felt was her business to ask. Her attitude was always off putting and a little mean. She would sigh and even shake her head when I would cry or ask for a break or ask if she could move to a different area. I told her it seemed she was mad at me and she would say "I'm not mad," but then also add, "It's just annoying that you keep doing that. Nobody else is like this." It made me feel small, unwanted, uncared for, and shameful for not being tough enough for her treatment. Finally, she would ask me a bunch of questions about my gender, about my transition, and about the various surgeries I might or might not want to get, none of which was prompted by me. This is invasive and in general a big issue with trans people I've heard from lots of people. Coming from an electrolysist who has a 90% trans clientele, it felt ridiculous. Overall, this was the worst experience I could ever have imagined. If you are sensitive, neurodivergent, have any kind of accommodation needs, or in general care about the texture of your skin, DO NOT GO HERE!!! I wasn't paid by a competitor. I only give bad reviews when I feel I have a social obligation to warn others of a service that is either a scam or else dangerous in some way. Please, sweeties, just listen to me and find another choice. Every other clinic me or my friends have gone to are well worth the drive. read more

I have waited a few months to write this review. I had a very uncomfortable experience. First, the salon that her room is located in is in disrepair. I was taken aback by the state of the interior. I almost left just based on the salon. But, I waited to meet Paula. She was friendly, honest and blunt. I didn't mind her giving me warnings on pain and the process. I went back to her room and it was basically a closet. I've done facials and waxing in private rooms before. They were 2 to 3 times the size of this space. So, before I attempt to get on the leaning chair/ table I get a warning. Paula said" Don't break my table, if you do I will be pissed!" Wtf! That immediately made me uncomfortable and worried. I already have a complex being large and in charge! She said a few people have broken it in the past! You have to get on and off extremely careful to stay in the center. Don't you think you would purchase a sturdy table??? I didn't feel like I wanted to get on or stay. But, I did anyway. The service was fine. It was just a little sting. But, following I got a lot of red scabs. I looked online, people said that could happen. I texted her a few weeks later for a follow up. She never responded. This was 5 months ago. She told me she was extremely busy and could squeeze me in when we met. After I thought about it, I was relieved she didn't respond. The whole experience was just off. I had called 2 electrolysis before her that were booked too. I went back to my search and found someone I love! No red bumps, a sturdy table and a great personality! Don't settle for less. read more

She was honest and realistic with me from the get-go. I think a lot of people want painless instant gratification, but that's just not this kind of procedure. I'd done laser before this, and because I didn't know I had PCOS it made my hair worse. Paula taught me a lot and directed me to some helpful reading and resources about PCOS and now I'm well on my way to a hair-free jawline (which had previously brought me incredible shame and embarrassment). She's always checking in with me during the visit and making sure I'm ok, and is patient when I need a break. I think probably the kind of people who get tattoos would be fine but I'm a bit squeamish myself.
