i am forever indebted to advanced veterinary specialists. we suddenly needed to put our dog down this week. my actual vet told me i had to wait 2 weeks to come in, another place said i had to come in, but the wait would be at least 3 hours. advanced veterinary specialists had over a two hour wait, but when they heard our circumstances, they got us in as soon as we arrived. we were given a private room and told to take as much time as we needed to say "goodbye". this is one of the hardest things i've ever had to do in my life, but advanced vet specialists made it so much easier and more peaceful for me and my sweet boy. i can't thank you guys enough. read more

Please do not go here for the safety of your animal, and your wallet. I value my dogs life so much. She is like my baby, I have grown up with her and she means the world to me. One night, she woke me up unable to breath, having seizures, so the next day I took her to this vet. They charged me 6,000 dollars before they even saw her, but I was desperate and they were the only place near me so I payed. They told me I should think about putting her down because there was nothing more they could do. They recommended that they could intubate her, and put her in a medically ensured coma for 20,000 dollars until she dies, which would make her life miserable, and that was money I did not have. I told them I could not afford that, and after I brought my father into the deal who is a medical doctor, and THEN they told me that they wouldn't recommend it since he had a medical background. That already was a red flag. On top of that, they said her only chance of living was to be transported to a doctor in ventura but they weren't unable to because she was not able to be transported. They told me she would die in the next thirty minutes. I rushed to pick her up, and cried the whole day hoping that she wouldn't die alone. That night I stayed up, didn't get a wink of sleep, didn't go to school, because they told me she would die, and I thought it was a miracle that she had made it this far. After multiple seizures and a night of no sleep, I decided that maybe I get another opinion. I took her to another vet, they kept her overnight. They gave us medication, and now she is alive and thriving. I am so upset and I still cry over it now because they stole my money that I DID NOT have without even curing her, told me she was dead, and if they would have handed me a medication, she could have been healed perfectly. Please please please for the sake of your money, time and ESPECIALLY your pet, do not come here. If you love your pet, take them somewhere else. I could not have imagined if I had listened to them and put her down when she still had a chance of life. I prayed every night, and I thank god so much seriously that she is alive and well today. This place took advantage of how much I cared for my baby, just so that they would get their money. I don't even want to know how many more they took advantage of, and by the other negative reviews here, it seems like a lot. You can go to any other vet, and it would be better than this one. Take them to SB Humane, they are very cheap they just need an appointment, or any other clinic in Santa Barbara. Please do not make the same mistake I did. read more

I am writing this negative review not because of the car given by AVS but because I think that they are unscrupulous. My sister's cat was brought in with kidney failure. I am the person in charge of my sister's financials which I explained to them at AVS along with the fact that my sister was in a treatment facility dealing with some very difficult mental issues. I asked when would they tell my sister that the cat was beyond help and they stated that they would never suggest treatment for a cat that could not be saved. We spent approximately $12,000 for the first hospital stay and then again approximately $12,000 for a second hospital stay. Then the cat was brought in a 3rd time and they suggested a blood transfusion and another hospital stay for another $10,000 even though as they admitted to me after the cat had no chance at any longevity and had to be put down 2 days after the 3rd stay. My sister could not make the difficult decision to let the cat go before almost $35,000 was spent to save a cat that they knew couldn't by the 3rd time be saved. They took advantage of my sister by giving her false hope and therefore she kept wanting to try and save the poor cat. read more

I couldn't be more grateful to the staff at AVS! When our shih tzu, Sushi, was literally on the verge of death last Saturday morning, we initially went to VCA on Haley and they were able to resuscitate him. However, due to what they said were staffing issues caused by COVID-19, they weren't able to get him on oxygen to do everything else so they forwarded us to AVS. They immediately took him in and did a half-day's work to get him back to normal. The total cost would've been more than what VCA would've charged if they'd done it, so AVS went the extra mile by giving me a credit which made the total charge equal to that. I still stand by VCA's work but during this Coronavirus age, I would recommend bringing your pet straight to AVS for an emergency. You guys saved the day and Sushi agrees!!! read more

Absolutely horrible. I took my cat into the ER with severe abdominal swelling due to a massive fluid build up. First, they wouldn't take him for days. When they finally agreed to take him, they charged me over 3k doing numerous "recommended" tests. I never got the results from the tests so I called them. They said they emailed them to me, but when I asked what email address they had for me, they said they had none on file.... Finally got an email a week later with my phone call records. 3 weeks later, no tests results and no recommendations. I'm not trying to figure out if I have to euthanize my cat, and again, tried calling to see if there is anything they can do based on the multiple ER appointments. Still waiting for a return call 6 hours later as my cat is dying. These guys are the worst. Would not take your pet here if you want him or her to live. Literally never spoke to a vet. read more

Way too expensive. I brought my dog in for an initial consult due to limping in hind legs. Sharon Shields did the exam, I couldn't be present because of COVID protocol. 15 min later I was contacted by phone and they reported their findings. Once I picked up my dog they charged me $600 just for the consult!! My dog needed bilateral TPLO and the total cost was over $12,000. There are much better options out of town like VetSurg in Ventura. read more

Had a great experience today with AVS. Dog sitting for my daughters pooch for 3 weeks. They live in LA and remembered today he needed to get his stitches out right away. (Was bitten by a pit-bull the day before they left on vacation). Other vets in town wanted to schedule out 5 days - 3 weeks. One was kind enough to suggest AVS, who took him as soon as they got his records and didn't charge me a dime! Very cool to know about this 24/7 awesome facility. Thank you AVS!! read more

Things have really changed....my puppy broke her arm and we had excellent attentive care here just 2 years ago LOVED the doctors/surgeons staff......Today same pup now a couple years later she Simply had a watery eye that looked swollen. Possible allergy, possibly due to a bath she had earlier and soap irritation but as 11pm hits the 4th hour they have her inside at which point her eyes could be completely normal sitting in this environment I am told another couple hours? This place really has changed. They were so friendly and helpful but the unfriendly, unhelpful staff who are treating "real emergencies with eye balls falling out of animals heads" could have some courteously for those who have waited behond even a reasonable amount of time. As a nurse a business owner and exhausted mother who has children I can't put to bed I am beyond disappointed. Definitely look elsewhere ..I use to adore them and now I realize it's not the same place. After spending over 10k surgical care 2 years ago I made a huge mistake not looking at the reviews and due diligence to look elsewhere before wasting a lot of time, work and family. Very sad....be very careful.... *** I just have to add I was told there are no other 24 hour animal hospitals and by quickly looking and googling found: VCA Care Specialty and Emergency Animal Hospital... called and was told by a very friendly person who answered the phone the wait is within about an hour and was quite helpful the opposite of what I am experiencing going into the fifth hour of waiting for my poor dog!!!! I'm not saying I go strictly by price but when my pet was brought there he sat unattended for hours when it would've been helpful to have IV hydration admitted upon arrival for the day then claim they wanted him to stay overnight at $900 a night whenThings were not urgent and seemingly minor. Ask other Vets who will tell you the truth. They call in specialists, so you will wait for many, many hours with your pet suffering. I have never experienced this kind of shocking incompetence, nearly all of the negative reviews on Yelp describe what happened to us! and to our friends on numerous occasions, so we go to another facility. AVS has had 9 hospital administrators in under 7 years! They have no retention of staff and Vets. It's that bad how they are treated and the disrespect and disdain these specialists have for AVS, they can't fix it and they leave. It is time for a real hospital that actually cares for animals and for you, to buy them out. Please someone step up, as the community will support you. She somehow made it to be a cat and dog vet but her ability to actually handle and understand a cat is so obviously pathetic I'm surprised she even treats cats Period. If ur a vet u should have some basic skills and understanding of the animals u are treating. I would give her a zero star for her cat handling and patient bed side manner but that doesn't seem possible. Would NEVER use her or recommend her again. This is Cody's mom, Taylor. We were sent to AVS by Dr. Oliver from St. Francis. Since then, we've been regulars for SubQ admission every morning for the last month. On Friday, Nov 24 at 12:30am, Dr. Mario took Cody's pain away. It was so very peaceful and I'm convinced she's chasing birds and knocking over unlimited amounts of pens and cups in the afterlife. She had been battling a very aggressive liver cancer. I just want to thank the staff at AVS--as we saw you guys daily, sometimes twice a day. A part of me misses the routine and misses seeing your smiling faces when Cody came through the door. Our family appreciates your support, your genuine care, and most importantly--your honesty. Thank you Dr. Obledo, Dr. Wells, Dr. Shields, Dr. Mario, and every staff member who came into our lives. Thank you for working around the clock to help us in every way. We were in Santa Barbara over the Christmas holidays and unfortunately our 18 year old Pobi (Long Hair Chihuahua) passed away from a heart ailment. Not being familiar with the area we randomly selected AVS for the cremation process and boy were we pleasantly surprised! The individual (Frankie-Girl) who helped us that day showed so much compassion and warmth I am sitting here with tears in my eyes as I type this just thinking about it. We were stunned and lost with our loss and Frankie helped my family make it through this loss. She gave us a bed and a blanket to help make the transition, and she waited patiently while each family member had their last moments with Pobi before letting him go. I had to take my dog in for getting into some supplements and the team at AVS were amazing! They were super busy but managed to squeeze me in right away, which was reassuring since it was a time sensitive situation. They spoke to poison control and came up with a treatment plan quickly. The ER tech (Ari) was fantastic! She kept me up-to-date on the situation and was very professional and helpful in calming my anxiety. Communication was very clear and the front desk team were super friendly. It would have been a much more stressful situation if not for the staff answering all of my questions and keeping me in the loop. We had to make the heartbreaking decision to put our beloved Penny down at 3:30 in the morning. We were treated respectfully and compassionately. The tech carried our girl in and I would say that was the hardest part, to not be right there with her but this is CoVID protocol, we understood. As soon as she was given an IV I was brought in and she was brought to me. I sat with her and then was the one to say when to give her the medication. When she passed I asked for her to please be handled gently. I was listened to, informed and treated gently as well. I took my dog in because he ate lots of chocolate. It was suggested by the person at the desk that I "could wait" to see a vet but I could go home and see what happens. Luckily I stayed and spoke to a vet. She said she would induce vomiting which they did and my dog was brought out after and I was to take him home. As he was handed to me he collapsed and started shaking and rolling his eyes back. The assistant said that sometimes morphine did that and it would pass. He was on the floor, heart racing and shaking and I said I could not take him home like this, she said they dont normally hand dogs back if they can't stand ! I asked that they keep him in and monitor him as he seemed seriously sick. They did redeem themselves after this and kept him in and kept me informed when I called and checked his heart through the night. But, if I had taken the advice of the front desk person then he would have likely not survived and if I had taken him home when he couldn't walk I can only imagine the same thing. AVS is amazing! I don't know what we would have done without there expertise and personal care. They treat all the animals there as their own. It feels more like a family than a hospital. Our pit bull tragically go hit by a car and our family friend brought her straight to AVS. I can honestly say that if it wasn't for AVS my girl Tegan would not be alive today. She suffered a broken pelvis, dislocated hip, a broken knee and severe bruising to her lungs and bladder. They knew exactly what kind of emergency care to give Tegan and acted very quickly without hesitation but still consulting us every step of the way. I am incredibly touched by the love and care that my babygirl Tegan is getting at AVS. All of the doctors technicians and support staff have been amazingly helpful, kind and loving to our family. Our poor pitbull daughter was hit by a car a few nights ago, and I truly believe the love and care she is getting at AVS is keeping her alive. She is doing a lot better now but is still very fragile and needs to heal internally before she can be a candidate for pelvis surgery. The team here is wonderful, they treat us with such care and kindness, and truly are doing everything to help my dog. We can't say enough good things about this place! Excellent service and very caring staff. Our dog had his spleen and gallbladder removed. They let us come see him after the surgery to try to get him to eat. They called us throughout the process and even emailed us in response to several questions we had regarding the healing process. Dr. Shields performed the surgery. She even called us personally to give us details as to how everything went. Laura coordinated everything with us. She set out several different types of food for our dog because he would not eat. She was extremely responsive to all of our inquiries. She is a gem. She went beyond and above what we expected. We live in Ventura but it is definitely well worth the drive. This was a very nerve racking process having to decide what was best for our dog. We felt very relieved that our dog was being cared for compassionately and competently by the staff here. read more

It is not common for a vet in our area to be equipped to do a laparoscopic spay and gastropexy, so i was happy to find this place. The consult cost $200, which seems extremely high, but i went ahead with the appointment. I met with Hillary Ludwig and was impressed with her non-rushed and professional manner. She answered all my questions and took a full hour with me. On surgery day, they were all very nice and they took my dog back to get her surgery. Once they were done and my dog was ready to go home, they phoned me and I picked her up. There were additional charges of $300 dollars so a total of over $3,400 to spay and tack a dog. This is enough money to go to Scotland for a week! I am taking her back for her two week follow up to remove stiches and that is at no additional charge. I do think the cost is high but they are in a market with no competitors locally. I definitely am impressed with the staff. I saw alot of very sad things going on there- dogs with cancer and other really sad situations that make my dog's needs look like a walk in the park. read more

PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE IT HAPPENS TO YOU!... We took our Boston terrier, Maizy to AVS because we couldn't get her into our regular vet in Ventura. Even the 2 emergency hospitals in Ventura were understaffed due to COVID so we were directed to AVS. Maizy had eaten something, and wasn't able to pass it, she couldn't even hold down water. We were panicked, especially my son who is Asperger and has a special bond with Maizy. Maizy was our emotional support through very difficult times. My mom has cardiomyopathy and Alzheimer's and Maizy had a calming effect on my mom as her illness began to progress. We were told to leave Maizy at AVS overnight for IV-fluids and an x-ray. The estimate for this was between $3,000.00 and a bit over $4,000.00 Dr. Weintraub told us when we first brought her in, that Maizy looked like the Boston that she used to have, and that she just loved her. We thought that was great to have her in such caring hands. We were told to call the next morning, which we did. The next morning they told us that it didn't look good, and that surgery was eminent. Knowing that we couldn't afford the surgery at AVS, we tried to get her into our regular vet, Ohana in Ventura, but they needed another day or 2 to get her scheduled. Dr. Weintraub said that if Maizy didn't have the surgery, she was likely to perforate and go septic and die in a very drawn out and painful way. We felt that we didn't have time, as AVS told us that surgery was our only option. We tried her best to get her seen by our family vet at Ohana, and another local vet in Ventura, but couldn't get her in the same day for the type of surgery Dr. Weintraub said was necessary. Well, with much struggle we made the agonizing decision to have Maizy put to sleep so she wouldn't suffer. We went to AVS to be with her and hold her and let her know how much we all love her, but when I got there I was told that AVS had done a fundraiser to give Maizy the life-saving surgery she so desperately needed and the vet tech would adopt her and take care of her... We just needed to sign over ownership, and give Maizy to them. We decided that this was the best option to possibly save Maizy's life. I left there relieved that Maizy might still have a long, full life. We called AVS the next day to see if Maizy was ok, and they told us that she was no longer our pet, and they couldn't tell us anything. I called the following day and got the same answer, and the 3rd day as well. I finally received a call from Dr. Weintraub informing us that Maizy was doing great, and that they kept walking her and she passed the obstruction on her own - so the surgery wasn't needed/performed after all. I asked her why we weren't given this option, but was never given an answer. I asked if we could pay for the extra day in the hospital, and for the ultrasound and get our Maizy back, to which she replied, "we don't have her". We were confused by this since we were promised that the vet tech would ultimately adopt Maizy, which was part of the agreement before we signed her over to them. Dr. Weintraub said that Maizy was in a county facility up for adoption, however, our family members and friends searched EVERY county facility and Maizy was not in any of them. Maizy still has the microchip with our contact information, so we would have been contacted by the facility if she had actually been in one. We said that we want our Maizy back, and that this doesn't sound like a fair way to treat someone who has turned to a vet to help a beloved pet. Dr. Weintraub said, "you sure seemed eager to have her put down" - yes, she REALLY said that! Such a cruel and unethical way to treat people who are beside themselves with worry and grief at the suffering and possible loss of their family member. Yes, we did sign Maizy over to her, but under false pretenses that Maizy would get the life-saving surgery Dr. Weintraub INSISTED was necessary and that Maizy's new home would be with a veterinary tech - NIETHER OF THOSE THINGS HAPPENED!! She was never in a County facility, and we feel very strongly that Dr. Weintraub wanted Maizy for herself, but likely handed her off to somebody else when she realized we were connecting the dots and calling her out on the inconsistencies in her story. We may never see Maizy again, but I think that this a good lesson for anyone to hear before they consider taking their family pet to this facility. We are still struggling with this loss, and believe that she should be with her family and her brother, Mack, who is pining for her. Really disappointed that someone who is supposed to care about pets, wouldn't want them to be where they are loved the most. The words that come to mind when I think of this facility are unethical and heartless. Although it is hard to relive this scenario whenever I speak about, I feel it's important for others to know. I will never recommend AVS to anyone. read more

The dr was fine. Answered my questions. Was very straightforward about concerns and next steps. But my goodness are they slow. The front people only debated how to best send a text message to a boy, while I waited for over 1.5 hours and THE ONLY ONE IN THE WAITING ROOM. Also didn't show me the receipt, they had charged me for equipment I didn't need, then they got the wrong medication AND the wrong amount of medication so two bill alterations within the span of about 10 mins. Not very "advanced". Super weird procedure "hey we'll take your dog in the back and not tell you anything until there is a bill". The dr was fine, but the management and policy of this place is bazaar at best, sloppy at worst. I just went there first time in the area for an emergency. Will be shopping around to be better prepared next time. Just want to stress this is no fault of the Doctor who was great. Very smart answered all I needed, knew what to do and I looked up after, is well qualified. My complaints only have to do with the surrounding experience. Will probably not repeat. read more

do not bring your pet here. brought a dying cat in, they immediately took the cat and didn't even ask me any questions about him (considering it had a vet visit earlier today and had not been doing well all day). then they proceeded to tell me to wait outside in the dark late at night by myself in a sketchy area. i was clutching my pepper spray. they did not even come and talk to us for 30 minutes after taking him in, and the prices are outrageous and unrealistic. find somewhere better. read more

We cannot say enough great things about AVS! From the first phone call to say that we had an emergency to our arrival with our girl, a Rottweiler, age 10, to our arrival, the staff was very calm, reassuring. They listened to the details, asked great questions and proceeded to take vitals and get an idea of what was going on. Most of all the bedside manner with our girl was very caring and calm. This was reassuring as our girl is not a fan of new people. A huge thank you to Travis and Dr. Bedal. While it was incredibly hard to leave our girl overnight, the reassurance that we could call anytime as they do not close made us feel better. As soon as we woke up, we called to find out how she was doing. They had gotten her rehydrated, and the symptoms had seemed to subside. Also she had shown a great interest in food. We set a time to pick her up. We came home with clear instructions on the medications, and things to look out for in our girl. I am happy to report she's back to her happy self, definitely better. I came in with my pug for and emergency appointment. She had a single petite seizure at the time, as well as severe pain. They gave nothing but reassurance of her good health and said there was absolutely nothing wrong. Three days later she passed at VMSG due to cardiac arrest and a continuous seizure. Dr. Carley and her team were miracle workers and took fantastic care of our cat Naj. At home he is a little rambunctious rascal so we were worried about what mischief he would get into at the vet, but their team made him feel right at home. They put him in the perfect environment so he was well behaved and could get his treatment done. All while dealing with the social distancing and quarantine. Thanks AVS! read more

I understand we are all dealing with heavy stuff during the pandemic. However, I took my dog to AVS after a night of him sleeping less than an hour or two and shaking his head nonstop. I had reason to believe that he may have a foxtail in his ear. I called my normal vet in the morning and they were booked. Since I had always had good experiences at AVS I thought it may be best to take him there as a foxtail in the ear can be an emergency. I called and the receptionist said great I will send a vet tech out to you. The vet tech asked me what was wrong with my dog and from there proceeded to YELL in my face! About how they are the only 24hour hospital in the area which is not true, I was stunned!!! I actually stood there listening to her rant until she said I guess I can take him back although it doesn't sound like an emergency!!! I told her NO thank you very loudly with my hand in her face! Like I would really trust her with my dog after the fact that she can't treat a human being with COMMON COURTESY!!! I will NEVER go here again!!! read more

I had multiple REALLY AWFUL experiences at this ER vet and their cardiology specialist rotation too. Even their equipment doesn't work properly but they will still charge you 10x more than other emergency vets. Dr Jennings shouldn't be allowed to treat animals & the coast to coast cardiology program will stick you with someone new every time and most likely an intern. She literally told me at 2am that I was wasting her time not making a quick enough decision to put my dog down or pay 12k. I took my pup out of there and drove to Ventura and that decision saved my dogs life and wasn't taken advantage of financially. Should have done it sooner! read more

AVS is amazing. We were in Santa Barbara for the week of Thanksgiving, and our little dog was vomiting and have other symptoms on and off. We ended up visiting the ER here 4 or 5 times over the week as symptoms evolved. Whether it was the middle of the night, or the middle of the day, the staff was always very communicative, responsive, and empathetic. They obviously all love animals and it makes a huge difference. We ended up finding out we needing their internal medicine team called in the day after Thanksgiving, and subsequently their surgery team. This place seems to have a very well-oiled on-call protocol that made us feel very confident and taken care of. We ended up being taken care of the last few days by Dr. Delgado and the surgeon was Dr. Ludwig. Both were amazing, patient, and thorough with our questions. Dr. Ludwig is an amazing human, and walked us through all the possibilities of the surgery, whether good or bad, with so much compassion. Surgery on a little one is scary - but she put as at the most ease possible. Every person that came to get our little buddy from us was so sweet with her. This team was so amazing that we are going to stay extra time while she recovers so we can be in hollering distance of this place. Some other things about working with this ER: - As they will suggest, if you may need recurring care it is a good idea to try get in with their non-ER internal medicine practice. Like every other vet as the pandemic goes on, they are a bit backed up but I wouldn't hesitate if I lived in the area - They were really good about taking our inputs. Our dog has Cushing's and they were very mindful of it and I felt it was exceptional. We did need to re-give details of how things progressed each time we visited, but that's normal for a ER that typically doesn't have repeat visits - They will put together really good low end and high end estimates and walk you through before you commit to anything big. You do not need to worry about awkwardly asking about financial things - Their phone protocol is pretty amazing as you can't go in right now, but other than a few times I needed to call back they were always prompt. They are an emergency vet so emergency things happen, but the staff is never annoyed or cross if you call a bunch - Parking is super easy, they have plenty of curb space. Little things matter We've been to quite a few vets, this one is exceptional and I can't believe even through a holiday weekend they were so great.
