I ultimately needed 17 stitches. What could have been a frightening and overwhelming experience instead became something I'll always remember for the compassion and professionalism shown to me. Every single person we encountered treated me with patience, kindness, and urgency. I never once felt like "just another patient." I felt cared for. PA Patel, who stitched my hand, was extraordinary. He was meticulous and deliberate in his work, but what stood out even more was how he treated me and my wife throughout the procedure. He explained everything as he went, answered our questions without hesitation, and maintained a calm, steady presence that gave us confidence and reassurance. You could tell he takes pride in doing things the right way -- not just clinically, but humanely. And Nurse Nick brought something just as important -- warmth and humanity. She was upbeat and genuinely kind, taking the time to connect with me as a person. That kind of personal care means almost as much as the medical expertise. We walked into the ER anxious and in distress. We left feeling grateful. To the team at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington: thank you for treating me not just effectively, but compassionately. Your professionalism and heart made all the difference.

Cons: no live wait time on website, registration staff who truly DGAF, dirty waiting area Wait time: 2.3 hours just to get into an exam room (I was balled up in a corner in pain and begged for a blanket because it was cold inside and 50 degrees outside. They triaged me, took blood and urine and had me remain in the waiting room. Once I actually got into an exam room, things started to move more quickly. Care: Dr. Sidara was actually the saving grace here. He was incredibly nice and thorough, spoke to me with respect and care, and worked to address my issues as soon as possible. He was even able to pull info from past doctors visits, which included a slight ear infection and double checked my ears while I was there to make sure he didn't miss anything further. I won't go into all of the details of what he discovered, but had he not caught one thing in particular, I might still be in excruciating pain. What I didn't like is the fact that I was in an exam room for maybe 30 minutes, then they took me to get a CT. And once I finished the CT, I was not taken back to the exam room, but taken to the "results waiting" room. There, my IV hung in front of me, without being connected, for about an hour. When all of my results were back, the doctor returned to me and told me all the findings and the plan moving forward. I do wish they would have kept me overnight so that I could continue to be monitored and receive pain management medication, but I understand that's not necessarily typical treatment for what I was experiencing. Shortly after the doctor checked in with me, my discharge papers were drafted, and I was on my way out. I was there from 3:50-9 p.m. ish.

Unfortunately, I injured my back again and I know more that one should need to know about the spine and discs (at least from my experiences 12 years ago). I'm a proactive patient, and I will conduct my research, but I didn't have the time this time around. My doctor from 12 years ago, has his first available appointment 7 weeks from today (he's really good), but he is also a 2 hour drive from me. I started searching on the net and it seems that pain management doctors are generally booked in advance. The office is located on the 2nd floor of the Sibley Hospital medical building in suite 210. The front desk and staff were friendly and very accommodating. I was able to get an appointment with Dr. Palak Turakhia with in a few days of my phone call. I found her to be cold and distant. My initial consult did not go very well. I asked her if she heard of a drug called Chymopapain. She did not. I explained to her that it was a drug that was readily available in the USA up and until 10 years ago and that it is still readily available worldwide. Also that I learned about it from my first doctor who thought it was be the right treatment for me, but I would have to travel to Germany to have it administered. The drug works to shrink the disk thereby giving the nerves more room which will intern eliminate the pain. (Thinking to myself as I looked at her very young looking appearance) I then asked her, "How old are you?" Under normal social circumstances I can see how that would be inappropriate, but when you give the doctor all your private information about your past and share that level of intimacy, I don't see how asking your age is in violation of patient doctor communication. I was thinking that since she "specializes" in this type of medicine, I thought she would have heard of it since it was only recently that Chymopapain was removed from the US market. It turns out that she graduated from medical school in 2006, which explains why she didn't know what I was talking about. (I don't care that she is young, if she's good and can make me well that's all that should count, but there is more to being a doctor than a medical degree.) I asked, are you at least 40?, she scoffed at my question and asked, "what are you doing here?" As if I were inconveniencing her and her life. I told here I was her to get an opinion and a treatment option for me to return to a normal active life. I asked her if she could read my MRI and let me know if she thought that pain blockers would just be a waste of time or should I take another approach. Would minimally invasive surgery be an option. Is the drug mentioned earlier still off the market or is there something similar. What is the latest technique to make me well. In a flippant, she gave me options, but still not looking at my MRI first before suggesting anything. Finally, I said, you are not exuding confidence to me, and I think I'll have to find a different doctor with more experience. She said, "not in this practice." This could have been handled much differently. One of the other things that bothered me about this doctor is her use of the word "like". You could "like" do this or you could "like" try this. I said, "fine then." I left the exam room and as I was walking by the front desk, I told the woman what happened. She apologized (which was not necessary) and asked if I would like to see a different doctor. I said, "I would, but I was told by Dr. Turakhia, that I would not be allowed to see one." I would love to rate this place a 5. I would love it if this doctor had a better mannerisms and more experience, but that is, she does not. Now, I would just like a refund for my co-pay, my parking fee returned to me and I'd like an hour's worth of my life back, but since that is not possible, I'd like to bill them 1 hour of my time.

The office staff are very responsive over the phone/email and in person and helpful too. Dr. Loomis spent a full hour with me during my first visit (the initial visit being a video call according to their pandemic procedures), more than the allotted 45 minutes! (Maybe it's because I already knew him from his public appearances and had a lot to chat with him about, as well as a lot of health questions.) He definitely knows a lot about nutrition (this being a specialty of Barnard Medical Center), but is knowledgeable about medical issues all around as well. He helped diagnose a significant vitamin D deficiency in me and prescribed a supplement. He also referred me to specialists for other issues. My second visit was an in-person physical exam, and again, he went above and beyond the typical standard for physicals. I'm so lucky to live in the DC area!

In the meantime, they instructed me to go to Urgent Care or the ER! Several other times, owing to minor issues such as ear infections and conjunctivitis, they insisted I do a Telehealth appointment or otherwise, go to Urgent Care or the ER. Further, annual physicals have not been comprehensive. Moreover, for my first physical with Barnard Medical, they assigned a medical student to conduct it, in its entirety (w/o any other doctors present). In addition, this was despite the fact that I had requested, in writing in my medical records, that I did not agree to be seen by medical students. It appears as if the doctors rarely even come into the office! The lovely Nurse Practitioner, Kristine, is the gem that seems to hold the office together! She shows both care and concern, and although there is a lag time to see her, too, at least you can get an appointment with her in person (eventually).
