We toured with a party of 11. 8 of is we're together and the other 3 included a young (carried) child. The 3 and one of our party did the shorter prospector's tour (all walking - no repelling or climbing harness needed). With the large party we were a little over 3.5 hours. Plenty to see and do, but the wait for the rappelling section was a little long (one at a time). Just walking through the mine, seeing the fog, feeling the cool temperatures, and the overlook before the repelling is nice. Plenty of story about the history, mining in general, and features in the mine. That's the prospector's tour and the first part of the miner's tour. Then there's repelling, clipping in to walk down a hill, walking over a shaky bridge, and exiting through the ice cave (temps in the 30s). We had a good time and I recommend it. Don't go overboard dressing warmly. There's a decent amount of activity, especially on the last part of the miner's tour. read more

Check out the Miner's Tour. This tour is LEGIT. This is not a commercialized, santized tour company. No guardrails. No lights inside. No paved trail that everyone has to stay on. There's exposed shafts and pipes sticking out. You crouch through tunnels that are less than 5 feet tall and have sharp rock edges poking down. You are seeing a real mine and how it looked back in the 1800s. I've done some mine tours in Colorado. This one is way, waaay better than those - this is the real deal. Really fun. Use the portapotties before the tour starts. You do not need to bring anything on this tour. You arrive in the gift shop and after checking in, they bring you to get suited up for the rappelling portion. You get a harness, gloves and a hard hat with headlamp. Then the tour group gets on a 6-wheel military bus over some extremely bumpy terrain to the mine entrance. Hold on! The tour is very hands-on and engaging. Our guide Katelyn had a lot of info to share about the mine and its history. Inside, there's lots of old artifacts like old tools recovered from the miner days. You can see the wooden planks from the old miner carts. You'll see how they actually worked using the quarter-crank rod, it looked miserable. You really get a feel for how laborous and dangerous mining is. *** 3 things I'll call out in case you have fears: BATS. Yes, there are bats in this cave. I am not afraid of bats, BUT not a fan. The bats I saw were tiny, maybe the size of a golf ball. They are terrified of people so they cling tight in the rock crevice and hope we don't notice them. None were flying around, but I could hear some chirping in the cathedral room. DARK. The headlamps are good at illuminating, so at one point everyone turns off their headlamps to see how dark it is. I knew it'd be dark, but once in it, it's kind of unsettling how pitch black it is. HEIGHTS. There's 2 places on the rappelling tour where you will be dealing with heights. *** Ok, so rappelling! I'm not athletic, so I wasn't sure how hard this would be for me. They have you practice on the vertical metal barrier fence around the top of the shaft. You get strapped in and do a trial run against the fence before going into the shaft itself. The practice is harder than the real rappelling! The scariest part of the rappelling was actually the first step off the ledge, because it's a vertical drop of 2-3 feet. The guide will go first so you can watch where they put their feet, the first spot to put your foot was a whitish rock. The rest of the way was MUCH easier, because you are at a 45 degree angle so it isn't straight up and down. When I was actually descending, I had to feed the rope with my hand. I was actually really worried about my arm strength not being able to support me, but it really wasn't a problem. Arm strength is not what is needed, the rope is supporting you. You just need to hang on to the rope, no prob. I'd estimate it took 10 min or less for each of us to get down. The bottom of the rappelling section is a steep slope as well. Again, remember that this is the real deal, no guardrails. Wood slat bridge. I missed everything about this bridge when I looked up the different tours online (not sure how since it's prominently featured). If you are afraid of heights at all, the bridge is going to be the scariest part of the tour. It's wobbly, narrow, and about 15? feet across a deep dark gorge that I did not look down into because I didn't want to pysch myself out. There's a rope overhead you secure to, so you are still in the harness for this. I went across pretty smoothly. My husband, who is a foot taller and 100 pounds more, had a more difficult time. I think it was because I'm shorter, I could use the rope to hold myself up since I was under it. My husband was above the rope so it was more difficult for him. Check out pictures online. Or dont. I think if I knew the bridge was a part of the tour, I'd have been more nervous leading up to it. PRO TIP: instead of walking normally across, try doing a shuffle, facing sideways, kind of sliding your feet. This keeps the bridge from rocking from the weight of each step. *** Wear: - Layers: think of a 45 degree day with no wind, so it's chilly. I wore a t-shirt, a fleece, and light jacket, and jeans, and I was fine. My husband wore a long sleeve t-shirt and light jacket. You will be moving so that keeps warm too. - Old shoes with grip: sneakers, hiking boots, trail runners. Everyone on our tour had sneakers on and they were fine. Wear shoes that can get wet or muddy; there are some areas of the trail that are wet. Not wet enough that my shoes let water in, but enough that you would not want to wear white canvas Keds. - Jacket with zippered pockets: if you're bringing your cell phone (for photos, no service obv), you'll definitely want pockets that zip shut on the rappelling part of the tour. The way you sit in the harness, you wouldn't want your phone (or car keys etc) in your pants pockets. read more

What a fun place to visit! I've been to a few caves but never to an actual mine and it was a blast. We went as a small group to the $60 tour that requires rappelling to the lower level of the copper mine. So much to learn and to see! Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and fun, and the experience was well worth the money. I wish we could go on the captains tour but that one requires advance booking. If you're not afraid of bats and not claustrophobic - this is a must see place! They also have a great gift shop and a few trails around the mountain. read more

Poor customer service. Saw it driving by and decided to try it with our 6 children. As kids 6 and under are free and they have a shorter tour listed, thought it would be family friendly. Employees seemed annoyed by us showing up. They were upset we didn't have masks, I apologized and said we were from WI and asked if we could purchase them. I then asked if children needed a mask, they weren't sure, but said the Governor required it on everyone. I said it wasn't a problem, but asked how to keep it on the 1 year old. They said I was arguing and stopped helping me. I said I wasn't arguing and would be happy to put a mask on the baby, I was just trying to find out the rules. Very rude and not family friendly. Just looked at the mask order, kids under 5 don't need a mask. They essentially refused service against the law and accused my of arguing when I was just asking how to comply. read more

Adventure Mining Company is a great place to stop. Our family of 4 (2 adults and 2 eight year old boys) did the Prospectors Tour which is approximately an hour and 20 minutes long. I would estimate the 90% of the tour was underground. After we were suited up with our safety gear we took a super fun truck ride to the mine entrance. Brandon, our tour guide and a native topper, was excellent. Very knowledgeable and friendly. We learned history of the mine and mining in general. There were also fun anecdotes and stories. Brandon was was kind and offered to take our photo a few times. There was also an ecological component. A few bats joined us on our tour. It was a fun and interesting addition. The tours start at 9am and run all day. I suggest getting there early to beat the crowds. It is cold (48 degrees) in the mines and the terrain is uneven and rocky so dress appropriately. There are portapotties in the parking lot. The office has some great souvenirs and some snack items for sale. Tips for the tour guides aren't expected but are appreciated. The location is well marked from the highway. As a bonus, there is a little library in the parking lot:) read more

I absolutely loved the tour. The staff was great, super knowledgeable and beyond helpful! Definitely do this tour. Word of advice: BEWARE OF THE GPS ROUTE. We were led to a road that was an ATV ROAD. If you have an suv you will be fine. I unfortunately do not. Long story short, I ended up with a hole in my oil pan and there was not a mechanic within 90 miles that could help me. So word to the wise: FOLLOW THE SIGNS AND NOT GOOGLE MAPS. read more

What an amazing experience! I definitely recommend stopping here and taking one of the many tours. We called ahead and booked the 3ish hour "miners" tour which included rappelling down to the 2nd level. Absolutely recommend this tour! We were staying about an hour west and completely forgot about the time change from central to eastern so ended up a half hour late. They were so wonderful about the mix up and we were able to go right out when we got there instead. The guide was phenomenal, the owner was a great guy. They all seem very passionate about what they do and so nice and friendly! We already want to go back for the 6 hour tour. Overall 10/10. read more

Kevin was a fun and engaging tour guide. Starts with putting on helmet with light. Recommend shoes for walking on rocks and small amounts of water on floor. Have to crouch down if taller in some tunnel spots. For kids, but I'd say at least 5. It's 2.5 hours with no food or bathrooms so prepare. No bats were seen. Very educational and safe. read more

AWESOME for the adventurer... :)) ok i have done more daring things... but this is VERY cool... walking thru rough terrain pitch black old mine... rappelling in the dark... it was AWESOME!!! Didn't see much publicity about this... found this kind of by accident, but with all the lawsuits in america, definitley NOT something I would expect to find.... It is old copper mine, and the terrain is full of blown up old mine rocks and you can stil see the copper and quartz all over in the cave... the inclines are steep... ok, we did the underground 3 hour tour, to me the shorter tours that only explore the first level of the mine wouldn't be worth it, but for ONLY $55 you get to go rapelling thru the mine, and it was awesome!!!! The only light to guide u is the light on your hat... The rocks are slippery, and it is very wet inside the mine... when they said u get wet and muddy... you do... so dress accordingly. Also, they advertised that the inside was 45 degrees... and seriously, 10 feet into the mine, it was every bit of 45 degrees, I was sniffling the whole time... We actually ran over our 3 hours, and NOT at one time did i ever feel rushed, it was just a little hard to find, because the roads up in the UP are not marked very well... if they are marked at all... The mine is actually, i think they said 18 ??? floors deep into the ground, but it is only open to the 2nd lever... and they are working on eventually opening up more levels... apparently it is flooded to the 2nd level. If they open another level, i would definitely go back... if u are afraid of heights or bats, I would not recommend. But it was so fun, and so worth it!!!! FYI - I am not thinking that there is anything else to see in town... really truely I SWEAR... we even stopped to ask a local for directions, and he told us to turn by 'Bill's', ok and as if I know who 'Bill" is... and be forewarned... u may or may not have cell service up here. I had great cell service usually everywhere, but I was still limited in some areas... read more

This place is amazing. The staff is really awesome. You get to tour an amazing copper mine and learn so much history about the UP and copper. I was concerned about my 10 year old being able to keep up- most of the tour is completely flat and easy to traverse. It is easy to do and was the highlight of our UP trip. This tour was awesome! Not many people can say that they have been in a copper mine. It was educational in a fun way and interactive! It was interesting to learn about the mining history of Michigan while in a mine!! The manat the front counter was very nice and gave us other ideas for things to do in the area. Their are many tours to choose from based on your ability, time, and budget. We did the shortest tour because there was an annual bike race stating soon which would be going throw he mine! (Super cool right) our tour guide Megan was very nice and asked if we had questions and interacted very well with us. The funny thing is she didn't even work there. She had when she was in college and cane back to visit and run a few tour because she enjoyed the job so much. I would say you need to be able to walk, crouch and not be afraid of the dark if you have a bad back or such this may not be for you. The ride up there is fun but very bumpy! Megan called it a Yooper roller coaster. I would absolutely love to come back again and try going down a shaft with the miners tour! ‍ read more

Over the week we decided to swing up to the UP and do some sight seeing and made the stop at the mine. We rolled in late and there were still able to get us in on the last tour of the day. Out guide, Mike, was great we had three children with us and he was very good with them. In fact Mike was the point of the conversation for the rest of the trip. We stopped here during our tip to the Porcupine Mountains - it was WELL WORTH the short drive from our cabin to the mine. We took the 1.5 hr tour and had a great time. Our guide, Mike, was very engaging and had many educational (and interesting) stories. Even on the first level, the mine still has the feel of a mine being worked by people instead of huge industrial machines. You can still see copper, quartz, and other minerals in the walls. Our tour group had two other families, including fairly young children, and everyone seemed to have a good time. Taking a tour wearing a hard hat with an LED light on top does make it feel more adventurous than other cave tours we've taken. If you're gong to be anywhere in the area, I highly recommend making the time to take a tour. As other reviewers mention the company also offers tours with even more adventure. read more

My grandfather mined copper in the area in the early 1900s so we (wife and I) wanted to get a feel for the life of a miner. We found this mine on the Internet and found the site with no problems. Once there we were shortly equipped with a hardhat with an LED headlamp. They took the two of us immediately, which was a pleasant surprise. Our guide was a fountain of information from the start until the end of the tour. Our ride through the woods to the mine entrance was fun as we were riding in the back of a old military vehicle that is open to the air. Once at the mine entrance our basic tour proceeded through the mine entrance along a basically level, easily walked path. Along the way were various exhibits set up to explain how the work was done. At one point the guide lights a candle and has us turn off our LED headlamps. Three men worked with one candle for the group! Not much light! At the far end of our walk we stood on a deck overlooking the MI countryside. A nice break before returning to the entrance. The guide had a wealth of knowledge about mining and geology. He carried a backpack with safety items. The outside temperature was in the 90s but it was a very cool 48 degrees in the mine, a nice break from the heat, but I was glad I had brought my jacket! read more
