My first time in Humboldt for my sweet nieces wedding... I knew the wedding was outdoors but wasn't planning on mosquitos, I am highly sensitive. Was referred to this place by the girls at Eco Groovy Deals... I walked in an hour before the wedding and the most incredible woman helped me find mosquito repellant. She asked a couple questions, told me the amazing options they had... was I going to safari in Africa kind of protection? And recommended Ben's spray. We bought a Wham-O frisbee for $10 from these guys around 3pm. We threw the frisbee no more than a dozen times and it split down the middle--literally from throwing it back and forth. At 4pm we returned the frisbee to Adventures Edge and were not given a refund or replacement. We had this frisbee no more than an hour, same employees working, and receipt in hand; yet, we were denied what any decent business would have happily exchanged--another frisbee!!! They have $6000 bikes for sale, but cannot rectify this $10 situation. I will certainly take my business elsewhere. read more

I called to ask how much to remove a threadless headset from a frame I had, they quoted me a dollar a min and said it wouldn't take more than 5 min. when i got there the gentleman i spoke with was very short with me, almost to the point of being rude. he made me feel stupid with his attitude. didnt get anything done there and wont in the future. worst customer service in Humboldt. read more

I feel compelled to make a comment about my unpleasant experiences at Adventures Edge. My wife and I have been into the shop many times for many different needs. We have found some useful and good quality products. Unfortunately, I have always found the sales people to be unhelpful to the point of snobbery. This has occurred in different sections of the store on many occasions over the years. I have always had the feeling that the sales people had very little interest in us and did not want to waste time unless we were ready to make snap decisions about buying high dollar items. I value shopping locally, but I also like to feel that a store values its customers and is warm and welcoming. Lets keep it short like my temper. I race my bike a lot and a couple friends said to try this place for bike work... I brought it in with a little trouble with my brakes for a $30 fix/bleed. Got it back came out to be $100 because they fixed other stuff without consulting me. I just bought a bike from here and it's been awhile for me since I last had a bike. The hooked me up! I just wanted a bike for commuting and riding around town but they gave me a bike that would fit my size (a plus since i'm so short) and budget! (It was on sale since it was a year old model AND I'm a student!) I also got a free helmet too but I dunno if that thing is still going on. Sure, the bike I got was still kind of expensive even after all the sales and discounts but this is the type of bike that will last me for awhile. Tire went flat. Paid a whopping 25$ to replace the previous tube with what I assume to be some cheap pieces of garbage because that "fixed" tire went flat again in 6 days. I go get the tube replaced again, for another 25$, but hey at least I can ride my bike again right? Apparently, in that 25$ contract, they forgot to tell me that my money would be better spent on a brick and a facemask, because it went flat within 6 hours. So for a 50$ weekly charge, I can rent my own bicycle from them. What a great deal. Not to mention, all the rest of their equipment is overpriced. You'd be better off checking your own garbage bin for tube replacements than this place. In fact, I would have had a much better week if I had just burned the 50$ that I paid them for what amounts to absolutely nothing in return. For 50$ you'd think they'd use carbon fiber, but I can only assume they're using their own moral fiber to repair my tire, no wonder the tube tore again after 50$ was spent on it. Don't go here if you value your sanity. read more

The owner was great to work with and she really knows her products. The bike manager is super knowledgeable on bike maintenance/repair, the latest products and how those products operate when used. A little pricey, but so are most (all?) bike shops around town. I've bought only one complete bike from them over the years, but this is my go-to shop for accessories and parts because they've got a better selection than any of the other shops that I know of. Staff is friendly, but in my opinion not as knowledgeable as some other shops. I believe this may happen because they don't focus on just bikes, and not all their staff are really into bikes, but all of them will try to sell you bike parts and service if they can. That said, you sometimes get really knowledgeable staff and sometimes get individuals giving you advice that you know isn't quite right. Their service dept (for bikes) is spot-on however and they do good work. I've had them rebuild suspension components and do drivetrain upgrades with no complaints. read more

I have been shopping adventures edge since the late 1980s. I have spent thousands of dollars on merchandise and products. However, I recently purchased defective and poor quality equipment from Adventure's Edge in Eureka. When I attempted to return these items, I was told that they would not give me a refund. They told me I had to deal with the manufacturer directly. The manager and front desk cashier were unwilling to help me with my returns. I have always tried to shop locally and to give them my business. After this experience I will never return to adventures edge Arcata or Eureka! From now on I will shop at Amazon or I will shop directly with the manufacturer. Without good customer service, I would recommend that everyone shop elsewhere! Sorry adventure's edge, you had the opportunity to keep my business but you have failed. I will actively tell friends, coworkers, and other professionals that they should not shop at your store. read more

I have been shopping at Adventure's Edge for fifteen years but I fear the new management has taken it downhill. I recently bought a $35 coffee mug for camping and the handle broke off before I even got it home. It turns out that it was just a poor design. I returned the same day with my receipt and the tags still on the mug and the manager refused to give me a refund. He would only give me store credit. When I pointed out the clearly faulty design of the mug he told me that I could contact the manufacturer to get my money back. I understand the reason a small business would want to encourage a customer to choose store credit. It was more the way the manager handled the situation that bothered me. He was rather abrasive and confrontational. And this mug was on a receipt with hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise. Any good businessman would have given a little slack to a loyal customer. If this was the only bad interaction I had there I might be willing to overlook it. Unfortunately it was not. I am in that store a lot and I spend a lot of money on outdoor equipment, however I'm sure the manager did not recognize me. Their customer service really leaves something to be desired and their prices are certainly not good enough to make me choose them over the other local outdoor store three blocks away. It seems more often than not that this stores employees are kinda snobby/condescending. Literally today I went in to try on a pair of shoes and I saw they didn't have the selection I wanted, and mentioned I was going to buy them online instead. They have fixed many things on my bike and always put in the extra effort to make sure the job is done well on quickly. I called Adventure's Edge in the middle of this Covid-19 Pandemic first to see if they were even open. I was very excited that they were still operating willing to put themselves at risk to provide great products and service to our Humboldt community. I then asked if they had a "Specialized Rock-Hopper" in a large size. The employee mentioned they have been selling really fast lately, but they did have one left and he was willing to hold it for a couple days until I finally had a day off from work to get it. They did not have any bike racks for my type of car in stock, and so Chris, the owner who was there working offered to drop it off at my house after they closed. When I asked him how much that cost he said it's free. Both employees that were working that day had amazing customer service and the quality of everything I got was just as good! I have traveled across the country alot. I have been to many outdoors stores both large and small...for the size of this store they are always well stocked, knowledgeable, polite, helpful and mellow about not following me around the store asking if I need help after their first hello! I've bought a good amount of my gear here and enjoy stopping in to see what they got and chat with the staff about hikes etc. Its a great store, I think, and we are pretty lucky to have that array of gear available in town! I just purchased a Pivot Mach 4 mountain bike from Adventure's Edge. It is by far the most expensive bike I have ever owned and the best ride I have ever had. I bought it from A.E. rather than buying a Yeti from a store in San Francisco, even though the Yeti gets more publicity and the two are the same price. Why? the knowledge and support of the people at A.E. I shopped for well over a year before making my choice. I tried out demo bikes, rode bikes belonging to others and read review after review. What finally made the decision was the true understanding of the people at A.E. about what I wanted and needed. They know both brands well (they are also a registered Yeti dealer), and they guided me every step of the way - from getting the right size frame (I have a very short stand-over) to selecting each component. Never, along the way did I ever feel disrespected or pushed. Instead, I felt that I was being guided with true care to making a decision over which I would only have enjoyment, never remorse. What really helps, of course, is that the owners and employees in both A.E. stores are accomplished cyclists who stay up on all of the latest technical changes and actually try them out themselves before recommending them to a customer. Further, they take time to know each customer and recommend only the most appropriate gear. They carry a full range of gear - from beginner to top competitive, but all good quality with no carry-over of items that would not sell. Unlike some other reviewers, I would not purchase a bicycle from Amazon - or even components. I need caring guidance from people who actually know. I get that at A.E., and I have gotten it in other gear in the past - hiking, backpacking and kayaking. I have always benefitted from the depth of experience and knowledge of A.E.'s staff, and I have never been disappointed. Of course, I buy very good quality gear, and I don't "bargain hunt." My enjoyment on the trail and my personal safety mean too much to me. read more

I am a huge fan of Specialized and Surly. So when I found a shop that sold them both you can understand how excited I was... Then I actually tried to be their customer. Ordering a $2,500 dollar custom Surly, Or at least trying to. I was met with dishonest, lazy employees who time and time again spoke condescendingly to me when I was forced to correct their inaccuracies. I kept it professional with them till the very end, but when they felt too good to properly fit my girlfriend for a 60 dollar seat. went out of their way to make her feel ignored and uncomfortable... I cancelled my bike order and moved on. this is Arcata, there are 4 bike shops here. I recommend Revolution Cycles or Life Cycles depending on your needs. Life for reasonably priced commuters and commuter supplies. Revolution for all your mountain and flashier road bikes. neither shop will steer you wrong. and both will be happy to see you. Unlike Adventures Edge. Which will make sure you understand that you're a burden to them, whether you're an experienced cyclist or a beginner. read more

The guy working repairs was able to answer all our questions quickly and even demoed a couple of things as examples. I have attempted to shop in Adventures Edge, Arcata, several times. I have gone in for parts and/or supplies. Not once have I ever been acknowledged by a sales person. In an attempt to take "the high road" while with my daughter, to buy her new shoes, we attempted several times to get an employee. She found a a pair she liked, but wanted to ask a question. Again, not one employee in the store out of 3 or 5 would bother to acknowledge us. I told her to put the shoes back, this was last straw. We went over to the Outdoor Store, was greeted with warm smiles, we explained what we were looking for and they went out of their way to help. For bikes and bike parts no one compare to Revolution Bikes - with BOTH sales and service. Those 2 stores rock! I will never go back to Adventures Edge. read more
