Affordable Automotive on Mine Road in Fredericksburg is way overpriced!! This is very unfortunate because James their number one employee is fantastic! However, he's not the owner setting their ridiculous prices. AA charged me $120 for Synthetic oil. They increased it $25 from last year. Gas prices are down from this price last year. I get a few dollars increase, but $25 is ridiculous. Grease Monkey charges $93 for the same oil. My bad for not checking beforehand. AA charged me $93 for 2 air filters. Again, Grease Monkey charged $48 for two. AA charged $203 for full alignment with VHC electronic calibration. "Tire Tread" Alignment charges $135 for the exact work- $68 less! Needless to say, I won't go back to AA. Way overpriced, and frankly arrogant, knowing they have many competitors next door and still charge their customers this much! read more

Highly recommend Affordable Automotive Repair. Own a 2014 Land Rover LR2 which we have always taken to the LR dealer in Richmond for any service. However, it is a long drive to that dealer and just a hassle to get there. Was looking for a repair shop locally that could just give me a diagnostic on my LR2 as the check engine light would not clear and I had already replaced several sensors thinking that was the issue. James at Affordable Automotive Repair was very courteous and I felt comfortable leaving my LR2 with his shop to see what was going on. I recently had my BMW in for a transmission flush. Not a good experience at all considering that I had a prescheduled 8am appointment for a simple oil change. I arrived early, they didn't open the doors until after 8am. By this time 4 other people were waiting outside with me. Once I got in side, asked for all of the same info I provided when I made the appointment. I gave them my keys and asked how long it would take. I was told, "we'll get you right in". As I watched numerous cars that arrived after I did being pulled in, serviced and returned to the owners, I gave them the benefit of the doubt and continued patiently waiting. Fast forward an hour... they still hadn't pulled my car in so I decided that was enough and asked for my keys. The service writer acted as if he was surprised that waiting an hour for a scheduled appointment when they pulled other cars in and serviced them before mine was the norm. Won't be back as I could have changed my own oil in less time at home than the time I wasted waiting for them to do nothing. read more

I brought my 2007 Toyota Highlander in for a state inspection and to have my rear brakes replaced (over 201,000 miles on these rear brakes). The service manager explained the repairs needed, even provided me photos of what the mechanic saw on my rotors, which needed to be replaced along with the brake pads. They explained the costs of all repairs needed and other recommended additional maintenance. I selected to only have the repairs I brought the SUV in for. The work was completed at a reasonable cost and my car was ready to go when promised. The staff are very friendly and have excellent customer service skills. I will continue to bring my vehicles to this business because of the trust I have in their services and their cost. It was going well until it wasn't. I think that in some or most cases, AA probably does well enough. I have had my A/C recharged, the universal joints replaced, and the Fan Clutch replaced as well. I suspected my A/C had a leak, which they did not find. Fair enough. They asked me to bring it back if the temp dropped again. The Universal joints that were replaced work well as far as I can tell. The Fan Clutch also works well as far as I can tell, but it did not solve the problem of having an overheating engine. This is where my issue comes in. Multiple times in person and over the phone I mentioned that on replacing a leaking radiator hose, I had refilled the radiator with water so that I wouldn't just continue leaking expensive antifreeze until I had fixed the leak. I asked SPECIFICALLY if that could be contributing to the overheating problem, and was assured that it was no issue. While the water was still in, they supposedly did a check of the cooling system. We had already discussed that I suspected the fan clutch and so did they, which is reasonable. The diagnosis returned that it was indeed the fan clutch, so that got replaced. The front desk even told me that antifreeze had been added to my radiator, and when I pushed back, saying that was unlikely as I had no leak anymore that I could tell and a very full radiator, which would therefore require removing some water to replace with antifreeze, I was once again assured that I had had antifreeze added, even to the extent that I would be good to go this winter! I shrugged and said huh. okay. they're the experts, and to this point had treated me fairly I thought. When I discovered my overheating problem wasn't fixed, I took it back and had them run another check. And there's the punchline, because they called me a couple hours later and said that there was no antifreeze in my radiator, and that I would overheat with only water in there. ... After having assured me multiple times over the phone and in person that it couldn't possibly be the issue. Also EXTREMELY suspicious to me that this hadn't come up on the first check. It seems likely that I was charged for a check that didn't happen because we thought the fan clutch was the issue. I was also told that in fact, there was no Antifreeze added to my radiator that first time around. That makes a lot more sense, but why tell me I'd be good even for winter? If I hadn't checked behind them, I could have left it on the assumption that I was good, then ended up with a cracked everything this winter when the water froze. Very dangerous. All in all, I payed the ~80$ to get my car keys back from them and leave civilly. I'm not the kind of guy to raise a fuss, and they had done some of the work I asked them to do successfully. I don't mind paying the money so much, but I do mind lying and cutting corners, both of which at least appear to have happened in my case. I do most of my car work myself, and I when I pay a mechanic I do it with the expectation of it lessening the headache and hassle of car work. That didn't happen here, overall. And of course literally on the way home my A/C went warm again, so now I have to find another place to go to get that fixed. TL;DR I give two stars because although they did successfully fix some of the problems, I am as sure as I can reasonably be that I was lied to and that corners were cut while work was being done on my car. They're also very slightly pricier than others, but that can be forgiven if the work would actually happen reasonably. read more

We have been taking our cars here for a couple of years (and we have a lot of cars!) including Japanese and German, and they have worked on them all. The owner, Brad, is very honest and professional. They have very reasonable prices and always do a great job, never recommending any work that doesn't need to be done. They also have a great warranty on their repairs, better than any other shop we've used before. They do have a nice waiting area if you have to wait for your car w/ free wi-fi, vending machine and a TV to watch. Even though we live 45 miles away, it's always worth the drive to get our car fixed here. During my work career I did a 7 year stint as a service manager in a Ford dealership and I know what to look for. I went there to get a state inspection. The service writer was both courteous and professional informing me that there were two ahead of me and it would be around an hour before they got to me. They got to my car in under an hour. The service writer informed me of what it needed and the work was done. I found the waiting area and bathroom clean, pleasant and well stocked with coffee and cold water. Work done on the vehicle was accurate. But, affordable? Maybe not. I got charged over $1,000 for replacing 8 spark plugs, a coil plug, and an oxygen sensor on my pickup truck. Shop manager claimed I had an engine which had an odd two-part spark plug known for breaking, but I did not have that type of engine. I was from out of town, and I took a chance based on the good reviews on Yelp. I called several times to speak with the manager about it, but never got anywhere. Lesson learned.
