Afghan Horseman has been in Vancouver since 1974 and used to be located on Broadway & Cambie till they moved to their current location by Granville Island over 20 years. This was my first time visiting the restaurant, and the food and service were both excellent. Looking forward to my next return. My friend and I decided the Horseman Specialty Platter which serves 2 people. We started with the Humous (yellow split pea), Sabzi Mast (spinach & yogurt dip), pita bread and a salad with cucumbers, red onions, tomatoes and feta cheese. The platter was filled with a delicious rice, baked eggplant, potatoes and 3 meats (chicken kebab, Lamb Shish Kebab, Lamb Shoulder Chop). We couldn't finish as there was so much food, so took some home. We finished with Pistachio Ice Cream (pistachio, saffron & rosewater) and it was rich and delicate and a perfect ending. Once of the best I had in town. Décor is tradition and relaxing. You can ask for the traditional floor seating or table. Reservation recommended but was can early and they were able to accommodate us. Free mall complex parking but ensure you register. Many metered parking on the streets within 2-3 block radius. The place is decorated in a very afghan vibe with an afghan room where you take off your shoes and sit down and eat. It was a great experience. Our server was very sweet and recommended great stuff. A very famous place in Vancouver, but I haven't tried it until now. The specialty platters are a great deal! I loved the pita bread with dip and the deep-fried chips in the platter the most! Always a great time at Afghan Horseman! Service is always warm and friendly with excellent food. Their menu has changed about a year or so ago and the platters have changed a little but still generous in portion and delicious! The potato panwar is one of mine and my boyfriend's favourites so even though they serve some with the platter, we ordered an additional appy size as we can't get enough. Pro Tip: There is limited parking in the Plaza the restaurant is located at but if you're lucky enough to score a spot, there's a QR code for free 2 hours parking at Afghan Horseman once you arrive at its doors so no need to pay! Their portions are very generous as well! I loved everything that I ordered their but the best item on their menu were their super crispy potato pakoras with their labneh dip!! Came here during dine out Vancouver and holy cow everything was absolutely delicious. From the appetizers to the main courses and the dessert I can't say a bad thing. We really loved how flavourful all the meat dishes were, and those potato slices seem double fried and poufy are to die for. Ambiance is very unique and to my understanding. If you go late enough on a Friday and Saturday for dinner, they have music and belly dancing. Service quick and helpful. Located near Granville Island, it had almost been a decade since I was last at Afghan Horsemen. Yes prices have gone up with inflation but the delicious taste is still there! I went with a friend and we got the eggplant dip to share as an appetizer. It is quite a good size and I quite enjoyed the flavors to start off our meal. I got the lamb kebab dish for my main and it was a decent amount of food. I did wish there was a bit more seasoning on the kebab but overall it was not bad. If you are going with a large group, I recommend getting one of their platters as it is definitely what they are known for. This place gets so busy and the restaurant was actually full. We were told that our meals might come out in 30-45 mins and since we can't have the table for more than 2 hours, we could only do mains and no appies. Glad we didn't do appies as the mains were huge. Ordered the platter for 2 which can easily feed 3. Chicken was a bit dry with big portions of potatoes and rice. Lamb shank was very flavourful but the chops were chewy. Service was good and the waiters came by often to refill our water. As the restaurant was full it was a tad loud so thankful there wasn't over powering music in the background like some restaurants. This place has been around for a long time. I remember this place from about 30 years ago it was so good! The food and experience back then was memorable so when I was in town I requested we come here to celebrate my birthday! The food is incredible. You can't go wrong with anything on this menu. They have selections for vegetarians as well. The ambiance and service were amazing! We even had an amazing belly dancer who went through the entire restaurant appear. I highly recommend this place. There is a reason why they've been around for so long. Their cushion room is a dream come true with the vibrant colours of the fabrics but low romantic lighting. It is floor seating but definitely an experience I'd recommend to all. Now that we've gotten ambience out of the way it's on to the delicious food! The platter make it easy for table sharing and come with a variety of appetizers. The horseman special platter comes with lamb chops that just melt off the bone. I devoured the humous with the soft pita bread the chicken kebabs were juicy and flavourful. If you're not a huge fan of lamb, you should opt for the beef and chicken kebabs instead. Make sure to order the 3 dip combo as it gives you a nice variety for their appetizer dips (eggplant, humus and spinach yogurt). The service is the only thing that could be a bit faster and a bit friendlier but this long loved restaurant is truly a gem in Granville island. read more

I've been here once before in the past and was excited to revisit for another round of Dine Out Vancouver! This time we sat in one of their booths which added to the Afghan Horsemen Restaurant dining experience. The manta are dumplings that reminded me of ravioli. They were filled with ground meat (beef and lamb) and topped with a tomato lentil sauce. The dumpling wrapper was smooth and silky in texture which is an odd way to describe it but it was so yummy! The filling of ground meat was on the crumbly side unlike Chinese style dumplings. My favourite part was the tomato sauce on top! This dish came with a piece of lamb shoulder, rice pilaf, fried potatoes, and salad. The lamb shoulder was soft and tender. It came off the bone and you could tell it's one of their specialty dishes. I'm not a huge fan of lamb and I was pleasantly surprised by the one here. The rice pilaf was strong in warm spices and had raisins to add sweet notes. Excellcent customer service! Definately recommend making a reservation on the weekend because it was super busy. We ordered the platter and everything was really fresh including the homemade bread but I was really dissapointed in the rice portion as you can see in the pic. We came a few years ago from Seattle and were so excited to visit this place again since their portions were huge and the quality was great but this time they were really skimpy on the rice. Its a platter for 3 ppl and the rice only feeds 1 person and I'm a big rice lover. Also their mint tea was delicious! Service is good and place is very vibey and fortunately came early since it got so packed even on weekdays. Since we were clueless what to get, Farzana recommended us with the horseman special platter which is the combination of meat and veggie platter. The main dish includes Boneless Chicken Shish Kebab, Lamb Shish Kebab, Lamb Shoulder, Baked Rice, Baked Eggplant, Dolmah (cabbage roll), Pakawra (batter fried potatoes), & Chaka (yogurt dip) Stand out for me was the baked eggplant. It fell apart and oozed with flavour! I'm still dreaming about how nice it went being soaked up by the baked long grain rice. The lamb shoulder practically fell off the bone. The two shish kebabs were so tasty, especially topped with the yoghurt sauce. And drool, the fried potatoes were like something you'd get at a festival, so crispy and chewy. I can't say enough how much food was there. We definitely over ate and even ended up with a take home box. Our server, Seyar, was so friendly and welcoming. Let's go back in time to January 2020, when Covid wasn't really a thing and the US/Canada border was still open. This was when we still freely dined inside and didn't have a care in the world. Life was good back then. Anyway, I digress. We came here for dinner on a Saturday night and the place was insanely busy. It was my first time having Afghani food, so I didn't really know what to expect. Parking is a disaster here, but if you can look past that, the food is great. Service was a little slow. We had a reservation, but still waited about 15mins to be seated. Then we waited another 10-15mins before our server came around. The 6 of us ended up sharing the Horseman's platter and the kebab platter, which was meant to feed 4 people, but was plenty for our group. There was SO.MUCH.FOOD. The pita and dips were super fresh and all of the meat was delicious. It was nice getting to try a bunch of different things, but I think my favorite was the batter fried potatoes. I've never really had anything like them and could've eaten a plateful. The crowd got rowdy as the night wore on, but it also seemed like a great date night type of place too. If Canada ever decides to welcome Americans again, we'll definitely make a return visit. read more

I've been to Afghan Horsemen two time previously and always left with belly full and heart satisfied. Today, I decided to go to Granville Island for some art supplies and figured I'll get to satisfy my lamb cravings at Afghan Horsemen again! However, I forgot about Dine out and how busy all the good restaurants are in Vancouver. I tried to reserve over the phone at 4pm but they were fully booked. Since I was already in Granville island, I figured I'll just get takeout. When I went there, they found a seat for me because another table changed their reservation! I went there right at opening (5pm) and got the floor seating in the back of the restaurant. We entered into the back room draped with curtains, decorated with various afghan themed memorabilia and posters, and prepared to feast. They had both the dine out menu and their regular menu. My family (3 people) all got the Lamb Shoulder (with potatoes, salad, rice) option for one person ($27) with an appetizer and dessert. Regularly it's $26 for just the lamb shoulder (with potatoes, salad and rice). For appetizers, we got the boulany (flat bread stuffed with potato and spices) and lentil humous. I enjoyed both of them. The boulany had a very mild spiciness paired well with the yogurt dip and the humous was so smooth and perfect on the pillowy pita. The lamb shoulder was tender, falling off the bone, full lamb aromatic explosion in the mouth, with a crisp outer char, as always. For dessert, we had the baklava. It's sweet, walnuty, syrupy combination paired excellently with the slightly bitter afghan tea. A final shoutout to our excellent server Farzana. She made us feel so at ease and provided excellent food pairing recommendations. In total, the bill came to $87 + tax and tips for 3 people. I don't live near this place anymore so it is a bit of a trek to go, but when I was heading this way to watch the fireworks it was a great choice. The restaurant was busy which was nice to see. After calling multiple times, I managed to get a coveted reservation during Dine Out Vancouver for my friend's birthday. When we arrived, there were several parties waiting to be seated. While we waited, we could see that the place was super packed throughout the restaurant and admired the nice decor. We were led to a big room with floor cushions and short tables. They have an area for you to take off and put away your shoes. I always found this part to be a cool experience. During the weekends, belly dancers come dance throughout the restaurant. Sadly, we came on a weekday and I missed out seeing my friend's terrified face of being forced to go up and dance. For the appetizers, we shared the: - potato boulany (wheat crust stuffed with a mixture of potatoes, sautéed onions, green onions, cilantro, pan fried & served with yogurt dip) - this tasted a lot like perogies, only flattened and was a good portion. Went great with the yogurt dip - mantu (A dough wrapper filled with a mixture of spiced minced beef, onions & herbs, steamed and topped with vegetable sauce) - essentially like a dumpling, on the menu it said there it was a beef and lamb, but there was only a very faint taste of lamb. Not very memorable The entrees were huge! We chose the lamb shoulder (fall off the bone tender and a generous portion, this was a hit) and lamb vindaloo (very flavourful, mild spicy, good portion of tender lamb pieces). Each entree was accompanied by baked rice, salad with feta cheese (like a greek salad basically), and pakawra (batter fried potatoes). The pakawa was really crispy and light, a definitely high light. For dessert, we this sweet/sour yogurt pudding which was a nice way to end the meal. $20 for all that we had was a great deal. Their platters are pretty affordable as well so I will be coming back. Salad with Feta Cheese (0/5) I don't eat cheese, nor do I eat salads often, as I'm not a huge fan of them. My mom is the only one who tried it, and she took one bite and she hated it. Lamb Shank (1/5) My brother didn't like the sauce, and my dad didn't like this dish at all. This dish was left untouched, as my mom doesn't eat lamb, and I don't eat meat. My only complaint is the the bottom was a little soggy as it was soaked by the syrup. If it was as flaky as the top layers, then this dish would have been perfect. I normally hate yoghurt, but I really liked all the dips, most of which had yoghurt in them. I honestly can't pick a favourite. My brother loved the bread that it came with, though I wasn't as big of a fan. The dips were super flavourful, and were the perfect appetiser to start the meal. The dough itself was deep fried nicely though, and was not too oily. Kocha Soup (1.5/5) My mom and I didn't really like this, as we thought that it tasted too acidic. I tried to finish it anyway, because I hate wasting food, but unfortunately I left a little behind as I was feeling way too full. Dahl (5/5) This was fantastic. The dahl was flavourful, but not overwhelming. I really enjoyed eating this. Badenjan Borani (5/5) This was really tasty. The eggplant was soft and tender, but not mushy, and the sauce was flavourful as well. I also really enjoyed eating this dish. Overall, I would say that most of these dishes were pretty fantastic. I liked the ambience, and the food came out pretty quickly. I wish they had the spinach stew as a side option, but overall I have no complaints about this place. read more

My first time eating Afghan food & I was not disappointed at all. We went on the weekend to catch the belly-dancing that happens during dinner time. It was very cool and the performer did a wonderful job entertaining us, definitely an experience to check out for sure. I'm not sure what platters we ate as I did not order them, but every bite I ate was splendid. Some of the highlights for me was the lamb, specifically, which fell off the bone & was so tender, and the fried potato. The fried potato was unlike anything I've ever eaten! Seemingly so simple, yet so addicting. Although the food seemed very rich, they were prepared in a way in which I did not feel bloated or gross after, even though I ate a lot.
