This place is FIRE. Honestly, probably some of the best Persian food I've had in Vancouver. The hype is real. Food is made fresh and comes in large portions, of which I am not against. We came on a weekday night so we were seated right away. Took away a star since it took a while to order and get our food, even more the family that came after got their food before us even when they ordered after! Forgiven since they were there for their child's birthday! Food is honestly top notch, it doesn't leave you with that over salted and MSG bloated feeling after most regular Donair spots. Sahel does not disappoint! I've been here a couple of times now and each time the quality of food has been consistent and definitely yumalicious! Instead of eating at the restaurant, we opted for take outs and did it picnic style so that my little rascal can enjoy the food as well. I see the same staff member everytime I go and she's very friendly. I was drawn to their hot food counter, particularly the delicious looking potatoes yelling at my name, again. I'm a huge fan of Middle Eastern style potatoes and Sahel's version is great. They were cooked to perfection and smelled fragrant. I was worried that the kebabs and lamb would be too hard for my daughter but she munched right through! I love the interior as it feels relaxing. You can also tell that the owner spent effort with the interior decoration. The color scheme is appealing as is their usage of live plants. Wanted to go try this place out and was delighted to have won a contest for a $100 credit to use. Right away, I ask if there's an expiration date to use the credit by. They said there isn't but that I could ONLY use it on a Monday or Tuesday AND must make a reservation in advance. Okay, am slightly annoyed with the restrictions as it was never mentioned in the contest details but figure I can make it work. I recently made several attempts to contact the restaurant to make a reservation and use the $100 credit the past several weeks. There's been zero response. What a waste of time if this business has no intention of actually providing a prize they promised. Instead, they offered a fake promise to increase traffic and interest in their establishment as part of a marketing ploy with their sneaky tactics of restrictions on when to use the credit and then never responding when it comes time for redemption. Fabulous from start to finish! I can't say enough good things about my spectacular birthday dinner last night at Sahel. I'm still shaking my head in wonderment about the beauty of it all. Seriously, from the moment I walked in to find gorgeous red roses on the table in my honour (placed there by a server) to the moment we left with two lovely servers smiling, blowing kisses and saying "Happy birthday, Mommy!" with such warmth and sincerity, the whole experience was gorgeous. I was there with my daughter and granddaughter and it was the first time dining in at Sahel, although I've ordered delivery several times. Sahel was my choice for my birthday dinner because of favourable prior experience with the food. Also, I knew they offered options for our varied dietary preferences. When my granddaughter and I arrived my daughter was already seated and had ordered a side of roasted potatoes ($4.99) and sides of Greek salad, yogurt dip (basically tzatziki) and pita. We all agreed that the roasted potatoes were the best we'd ever had. So much so that we promptly ordered another plate. I imagined their long slow roasting, bathed in exquisite lemony garlic sauce, served hot and golden with a garlic dip. The mains we ordered were: chicken kebab with basmati rice and roasted tomato; chicken donair plate with basmatic rice, Shirazi salad, hummus and pita; and the falafel plate with 8 falafel balls, basmatic rice, hummus, Shirazi salad and pita. All were around $18. The portions are enormous! We knew we'd never eat it all and all three of us took home a good-sized take-out container packed full. The chicken kebab was huge! Large pieces of marinated boneless chicken breast, grilled over hot coals, declared out-of-this-world yummy. Swoons all around, in fact, as every item was absolutely delicious. I ordered the chicken donair plate because I wanted to try something I hadn't had. Previously I've ordered kebabs and they've all been great, and was a bit hesitant to order the donair as I'd never tried it and I knew the chicken kebab was divine. Well, the donair was also divine and, despite how I kept eating it because it was so tasty, I took home about half of it. The rice is perfect: light, fluffy, with a hint of saffron, and sumac on the table for sprinkling. Hummus, although very cold just out of the fridge, was creamy and flavourful. The Shirazi salad was a bright surprise, same veg mix (I think) as the Greek salad, but with mint and a crisp grape juice dressing (according to the menu). I suddenly recalled that in my long-ago days of backpacking around the world I visited Shiraz, but that's another story... The service was perfect, as there were two friendly, smiling ladies who made sure we had what we needed, inquired as to our satisfaction with the food, and generally took care of clearing plates and keeping everything in order without even appearing to be there. I really appreciated their welcoming me, wishing me happy birthday, and generally being superb at their jobs. Even though the place was full, food came quickly, each order perfect, and none of us had anything to complain about. It was, seriously, our best dinner out in a very long time. We walked home, talking about how much fun it was, how spectacular the food, the service and the whole experience. I did not see the bill, but I think the whole thing, food, drinks (no alcohol for us), tip (and enough food going home for another couple of meals) was about $100. I just read an article about the dire situation in which many restaurants find themselves these days, with so many closing due to skyrocketing costs of ingredients, rents, wages, etc. Places like Sahel, which offer a warm, family atmosphere and spectacular food, deserve to stay in business. Lamb chops were good but the dish had no dressing no pita and only dry rice, which made it very dry and less flavorful. Chicken sandwich also was not that great. The staff was slow and forgetful. We ordered extra pita which never came through. The bathroom was next to back kitchen where there were huge dustbins with stinking food which gave me a not so good feeling. The flavor/seasonings were slightly different than what we were expecting. The joojeh was really moist and flavorful and the barg and lamb chops were also good. I also really loved the eggplant dip and the tahdig sampler. The platter presentation was great and the portions were quite large. We can on a Saturday night and this place was BUSY. I've only ever gotten take-out from here but it is consistently so tasty. Donair Dude and Sahel Market & Restaurant are right next door to one another. Out of the two, I really recommend Sahel not only because of the portion size but also for the variety of options. It's nice to support a local business, especially when their food is so delicious. You can tell when you walk in from the way the place is decorated and the vibes that it is authentic. Both times I got the lamb donair. Service is quick and not fussy - it's made in under 5 minutes. For just $12.99, it is pretty inexpensive to get a wrap the size of my face. I struggle to finish it because it's so big. Upon walking in, the place smells of good old persian cooking. The smell of grilled meats and tomatoes, the aroma of sauces and stews...wow!! I tried their biggest platter which basically gave you all the grilled meats in 1 huge plate. You get to try longmeh, chicken, steak, and lamb chops. The best grilled entree by far is the longmeh (ground meat). So juicy and packed with persian spices. So much flavour and aromatics. Next would be the chicken and then the steak. Both were cooked and seasoned well. Not dry and tough. The least fav was the lamb. It was so thin and overcooked, leaving it dry. But the rice and the bread were amazing. Most specially the bread, as they soaked up all the juices of the meat. One thing i didnt appreciate was that you had to pay for the yogurt sauce. It never came with the platter and was extra. Service was good but a bit slow for a deli/mkt. but it was with a smile. So all good. They have fresh shawarmas too. The customers were a mix of diff races, but you can easily recognize persians as well. So if persians do come here, then you know you've found a gem. Its slightly on yhe expensive side, but ok. I find Persian cuisine's texture and flavours very homey-combination of rice and meat scream comfort food. My friend and I were so hungry and couldn't decide what to eat but the platters caught our eyes. Original we wanted the Sahel Special Lamb Platter but was informed they were out of the lamb shank so took the BBQ Platter. The BBQ Platter was beautifully plated. Loved the bright saffron basmati rice, juice meats (Loghmeh, boneless chicken, & barg kebabs and lamb chops) lined up and placed on top of pita bread, surrounded by white onions, purple pickled cabbage and bright lemons. The tomatoes were too burnt for my taste so scraped off the outer part. We also had black tea (one pot is enough for 2 people) and saffron ice cream. The food tasted great and we were very satisfied. We will certainly come back again and hope the lamb platter will be available. The service part needs some work. The two young ladies were very pleasant but seams new to the service business as it took us a few times to get their attention. When we did get their attention, the bill was presented without asking if we wanted dessert or anything else. After dinner, we stroll to the back to look at the small grocery section. We were strolling down Broadway when we came upon this wonderful restaurant. The food is so good! I especially love the salad, beef, and lamb. The decorations and lighting really sets a mood within the restaurant. Lots of chatter, too. The service is slow-ish, not that I care. Take-out is extremely worth it, as you get nearly twice as much food than a normal order in the restaurant. They have a really authentic and unique yogurt drink that I suggest trying a tiny bit before ordering. Some people like it, some don't. Lots of take out orders and their dining room was always full with people waiting. While deciding where to eat, I stumbled upon Sahel Market and Restaurant. They specialize in Persian food. They're located in between Donair Dude and Olympia Pizza. We dropped in on a Saturday afternoon (around 12:15pm). The inside is spacious with the market, several tables and a small patio area out front. The market has a mix of goodies to peruse; tea, bread, dried fruit, spices, sauces, etc. Apparently, their shallot sauce ($2.99) is amazing (according to one regular). Menu is small with appetizers, main dishes, salad and desserts. We wanted to try the fish with rice but it wasn't available that day. One of the workers was seriously the sweetest person and gave us several samples to try. So cute that she thought we'd never had Persian food before. - Lamb shank with rice ($9.99) - slow cooked and served with rice, potato, dill weeds and lima beans. This was their special of the day (normally $11.99). Easily the best dish we ordered. Lamb was fall off the bone tender and juicy. Price can't be beat. - Gheymeh ($8.99) - stew with split yellow peas, beef chunks and topped with thin fried potatoes (almost like hickory sticks). The yellow peas were tasty and held their shape. - Vaziri ($14.99) - chicken and ground beef skewers with roasted tomato, rice and salad. Salad is of the iceberg variety (meh) and rice was mixed with barberry to add a touch of sweetness. Both meat skewers were well marinated and tender. Ground beef was the tastier option. - Beef skewer ($5.99) - we wanted to try one of their steak skewers but we were unfortunately given another beef skewer. Pricey! - Cream puff ($1.99) - we bought one to eat later. Fresh whipped cream and light, fluffy texture. Close to how my mom makes it! The server directed us to sit at a table, we sat down, then the server sat down 3 more tables, gave them menus and fresh water and glasses while we are still waiting for a menu. We asked for menus and finally we get it. I asked them to removed the water and glasses sitting ate our table and for fresh water and glasses. Immediately after the server dropped of the menus, another server came to ask for the order - we were not ready yet. While we wait for the food, I watched the server drop off several dishes at a table and I commented to my friend that the guy sitting there has such a large appetite. A few minutes later, that guy told the server that dish is not his. The server took the dish and dropped it off at another table on the other side of the restaurant. At the same time, another table left, the server moved the used jug of water to the counter/bar, and another server used it for another table. At this point, I lost my appetite for dinner here. Terrible racist experience had by my sister this afternoon. She had gone in wanting to buy a donair for her son, when requesting her order the server looked at her and said '...not for you..' and refused to allow to her to order. My sister left in shock. After a short period she went back into the restaurant to try to clarify why she had been denied service. She approached a male server and explained her previous experience with his coworker, the server said I don't understand, and my sister then asked that if she was denied service because she was Chinese. The server did not deny nor defend this but he then proceeded to escort her out....she told him that this type of racist behaviour is unacceptable. It is quiet, calm, colorful, and warmly lit. So absolutely perfect and a comfortable environment to nibble through your giant platter and have a good chat with friends. I've gotten food from Sahel since it was only a side counter in their grocery store years ago. My family loves their food! Considering Vancouver staggering food price and their Kitsilano location, they're generous. My favorite is Ghomeh (beef stew with lots of herbs and kidney bean). Yum! I can finish a whole portion with their fluffy and tasty basmati rice. Their lamb dishes are also very good. They are juicy and flavorful. My husband and son love their donair wrap. Meat are tender and delicious. Huge! I love the servers too. They're very courteous but not pretentious, like many who are trained to grab your money in chi-chi restaurants.
