Thanks to Yelp, I found this gem in Cadillac right off the River! As a big brother to a "special needs" sister I was thrilled to see they are an inclusive workplace that provides opportunities. My 1st visit DID NOT DISAPPOINT. The staff was friendly and talkative, which I LOVE. (Ask my wife, I'll talk to anyone in public) The Philly Hopper was an awesome and filling meal for the price. I love horseradish cream, and to get it on a mix of steak, hash browns, fresh peppers and onions, with two eggs on top was just delicious. Give them a shot! Coffee and skillet and I was out the door for less than $20 read more

The food and service were fantastic at this restored train depot. It is a beautiful setting across from the lake. Great views from the outdoor seating as well. I had the turkey Rachel with onion rings. Both were tasty and the onion rings were made in house, not frozen. The other person had the Marquette Melt with fries and he said it was delicious. Fast friendly service, very nice atmosphere. I went out of my normal breakfast "box" and ordered something sweet, the Monte Christo with raspberry jam was amazing. I ate it as a sandwich and it was very good. In hindsight I should have drizzled syrup over it. The mission provides employment for adults with disabilities and a portion of your tip goes the the mission project. Overall very nice restaurant in a very nice location providing a very nice service read more

Met my mom and dad here for my mothers birthday celebration breakfast. The food was delicious. The service was incredible with several friendly faces covering all the bases. The decor is incredible, still resembles the inside of an old depot. This is a midway point between my parents and myself, and will be revisited. Downside is that it closes at 2 PM, the upside is birthday patrons get their age percentage off their bill. Wonderful that they do that. read more

Loved everything! Driving south we stopped in Cadillac to grab brunch- this spot did not disappoint. The restaurant was clean, servers friendly and helpful, and meals delicious! My kids loved the waffles and "wheel" potatoes, the eggs/hashbrown portions were huge, and the strawberry jam was what dreams were made of. Having a little baby, we sat in a back boardroom and had privacy when nursing- it was so appreciated. We highly recommend this spot- and we loved being in a neat historical building too. read more

Food- I wish there had been lattes, but I am spoiled. Regular coffee was good, as was the cup of tomato basil soup which I had ordered to go. Service- Practicing patience and being polite goes both ways, great service. Ambiance- I only ordered to go as I was driving home to TC. So, cannot really comment, but it's an old depot and there's a lake nearby, cannot hardly go wrong. Mission- The after 26 project exists to provide job opportunities and community for adults with disabilities after they age out of their fape (free access to public education) which is available until age 26. As someone who works with young adults, 18-26, with disabilities, I know there is such a need. People with disabilities can do so much, but just need understanding and support to be successful. I never heard of Cadillac until I passed the town recently on my way to Sleeping Bear Dunes from down state. It was late winter-early spring. The weather was still cold with a little bit of snow and there, but the sun sets late, making it perfect for road trips. I never knew Cadillac was such a lovely city. We were looking for lunch and stumble upon this place as it's located near the lake. It was open only until 3 and we walk in at 2. Yet thr lady welcomingly seated us. The restaurant has a charming decor and ambiance, both inside and out. It gives out family-friendly, home made feels. The menu are simple American breakfast/brunch type of menu. I'm so glad they serve breakfast all day. Ordered egg white omelette with mushroom, spinach, and tomato served with whole wheat toast, fruit cups, and strawberry / raspberry jam. It was the perfect size -- not too much, not too little. The food was delicious! The price is really affordable too. If I'm not mistaken they are cash only. Extra bonus reason to love and support this place is they provide opportunities for people with special needs to work. read more

Wonderful place to go. The staff is friendly and helpful and is a joy to be around. The food is good. I had the turkey Reuben and would get it again. Plenty of flavor and bread was outstanding. My wife had the French dip and it was also tasty. Kids had breakfast buffet and chicken fingers and everyone scarfed their food down. Prices are reasonable. We were on our way back home from Sleeping Bear Dunes, and were feeling hangry. My partner and I found this place, and feel grateful for it! The food is good and worth a stop in, but the best part of this place is the community and mission. After 26 Depot Cafe is actually a 501(c)(3) organization functioning as a restaurant that provides opportunities to adults with developmental disabilities and cognitive impairments. This place does a great job of showcasing that adults with disabilities are absolutely capable of performing in the workforce when given a chance. Go check this place out! read more

Specialties

Who we are? This community wide effort became a reality when the Depot opened in June of 2013. Of course it took the board of directors six years of hard work before that to get the ball rolling. Today the After 26 Project, a tax exempt 501(c)(3) corporation, employs 19 'Project Workers' that perform various job tasks around the restaurant. Typical job responsibilities include greeting customers, taking water to tables, washing dishes, busing & cleaning tables, cleaning menus, janitorial duties, and related tasks.The Depot is overseen by a volunteer board of directors, with daily operations handled by a general manager. Why do this? In Michigan, at the age of 26, adults with developmental disabilities and cognitive impairment can no longer attend public schools, they age out of the system. For these individuals this is a very difficult and confusing time, suddenly, there is a huge void in their life and they have nothing to do. It also adversely effects the family as they see their loved one struggle with what to do next. So in 2007 a group of like minded people set out to open a restaurant to help fill that void and provide jobs in the greater Cadillac community. The original board was made up of retired school teachers, municipal workers, and private business people. When given the chance, adults with disabilities can perform effectively in the workplace...

History

Established in 2008.

We became a non-profit organization in 2008. After raising awareness, and fundraising, we refurbished a 1911 train Depot and opened the cafe for business in June of 2013.

Meet the Manager: Board of Directors A.

We are governed by an unpaid Board of Directors who have been on this journey since 2007. Our goal to establish a place of employment for adults with developmental and cognitive differences continues to positiviely affect their lives, their families, and the many patrons who visit the cafe and realize the capabilities of these individuals. We employ 21 "Project Workers," and a staff of 12 servers and chefs.

Boat Builders Burger: 1/3 of a lb of ground chuck medium rare (they cooked it perfectly) with some Swiss on top. Probably the best burger I've had in the last few years. Recently some friends and I found ourselves in the area, conveniently at lunch time, so we stopped and grabbed a burger. I got a mushroom swiss burger and had them hold the lettuce and tomato. My burger was real good, and my friends assured me that theirs were as well. One of my friends got their olive burger and it looked amazing. We got one order of regular fries and one of waffle fries. They have some good dipping sauces for the fries and the two orders were more than enough for the four of us. The service was great and we were impressed with how well they quickly cleaned vacated tables. This is a food truck that travels between a few of the towns up by Cadillac, all seating is outside on picnic tables. I'm glad I finally got to try this place and I'm looking forward to returning.
