I've heard so much about this ramen place from friends and finally got to visit their location in NYC! I visited the second week after they opened. The restaurant is spacious and has an open kitchen where you can see them making ramen and other food items. There is even a bar in the back! I am a person who doesn't like thick and heavy ramen. Yuzu Shio is my favorite, which is light and refreshing! Their gyoza is juicy not dry at all. Overall I would say that this place definitely hit my top 3 ramen place in nyc! I'm so so happy Afuri finally opened in NYC and in Brooklyn so it isn't too far for me to get to. They are an established brand in Japan and have now expanded their business into the states with other locations in Los Angeles and Oregon. From entering until leaving, the service was amazing! We ordered the Buta Gyoza, Yuzu Ratan, Yuzu-Tsuyu ramen, and each had a glass of Dassai 45 sake. (Didn't get a picture of the Yuzu-Tsuyu as I was starving and scarfed it down) Wow! Everything was amazing and super delicious. The quality of everything was supreme and prepared exceptionally well. It made me feel like I was back in Tokyo. The space is huge! Biggest ramen restaurant I've ever been to in NYC and they also have a separate area for their bar if you feel like just getting some tasty mixed libations. The only complaint I have is that our gyoza took kind of a long time. I think we waited close to 20 minutes. The table next to us was seated after us and received their appetizers and ramen bowls before we even received our starter which was the gyoza. I didn't hold it against them as they are in the first few weeks of opening and probably working out any kinks. Yuzu is something else, you know. It mellowed down an otherwise rich and heavy tonkatsu broth. It perked it up. It made it interesting. It made me smile and I'm thinking,...ahh, this was what they meant when they called it unique. The noodles had a pleasant chew and were subtly coated with the broth's citrusy lightness. My daughter was quite focused on her ramen that when she looked up, she was astounded that I was halfway done. It was the first week of September and Williamsburg was hot! I wish I chose seating by the booth across the bar, but way inside where air conditioning defeated the Brooklyn summer heat. It was an open kitchen and you could see everyone was busy but still attentive. The Buta Gyoza was ok- very crispy downside up, but I wasn't keen on its taste. Plenty of options for apps. I loved the Basque Cheesecake with that glazy yuzu curd and I'm sure the hazelnut crunch would have been a perfect contrast to its texture, but I had to fork it to one side. Overall the food wasn't bad. We started with the crispy hotate gyoza tostado, which was by far the best dish we had. Really delicious. I got the hazelnut tan tan which was ok but it was described as spicy and this was just barely spicy. It's vegan so it came with shiitake mushrooms as the "meat" and I added an egg. It only comes with a half of a hard boiled egg otherwise. I also got the strawberry shishito margarita that was delicious. My boyfriend got the yuzu ratan that wasn't spicy at all and he actually left most of it uneaten since he didn't like it. What kind of surprised me is that the waiter didn't even ask if everything was ok after he clearly didn't eat his meal. I will come back to try it out again since it is new. But I will also say that there are much better ramen spots close by that are less expensive as well. The food we got for the is the reason for the 3 stars. Broth was well seasoned with a very refreshing and pronounced yuzu taste, the amount of noodles was quite generous, and the chashu flavor was on point in flavor and texture. My husband's tonkotsu ramen broth was also quite good -- creamier and has that distinct strong black garlic flavor. House IPA was quite good albeit a tad $$. Karaage was deliciously served with yuzu mayo and chives. Gyoza was bit underwhelming for me. A bit oily and underseasoned when we had it. Dipping sauce a bit salty imo. But we were very happy with everything else. Also very kid friendly. Servers gave my 19 month old toddler crayons and paper as well as her own bowl and water cup with straw. It was all so unexpectedly thoughtful. A+ Ambience was good. Music was on the louder side when we were there during the evening, but it made me feel for a moment like I was young again. The place is huge and very baby friendly - they provide a kids menu with crayons and have a kids menu too. I would recommend the yuzu shio ramen - the noodles were al dente but chewy. The yuzu limeade was great. The yuzu tsuyu tsukemen was a little too funky for me- I'm usually a tsukemen gal, but was not a huge fan because the noodles were not thick enough in texture and the cold dipping clear broth didnt do it for me. Having had Afuri on trips to Tokyo and Portland, OR, I was looking forward to finally making the trip out to Williamsburg for my favorite yuzu ramens. The location is a little bit far from the main drag of Williamsburg, but only a 10 min walk from the Bedford Ave stop. I really enjoy the atmosphere and they did a really nice job with designing the space. Every seat feels like it is well spaced, even at the communal tables. We ordered a spicy karaage donburi. It was not overly sauced but the rice was a bit overcooked. We ordered a cold yuzu-tsuyu tsukemen with cold noodles. The noodles could have been a touch firmer and the sauce could have used a bit more of a yuzu bite, but I overall enjoyed the dish. For the hot yuzu shio ramen, I had a similar note that the thin noodles could have been just a bit firmer, but I was happy with the yuzu aroma from the broth. I thought it was interesting that both were garnished with frisee when scallions like they use in Japan would have added more flavor. Both ramens came with half a soft boiled egg, the hallmark of every Japanese dish. It was perfectly fine, but not nearly as good as the soft boiled eggs at the other locations, which were fuller in soy flavor and had that jammy yolk you crave in a soft boiled egg. We ordered the basque cheesecake for dessert which came with yuzu sauce and candied hazelnuts. It was nice and light but wish the consistency was smoother or creamier. It wasn't too busy when we came at 3:30p on a Saturday and the service was very pleasant. Would not be opposed to coming back. read more

I've been to the Azabu and Harajuku locations, and the Brooklyn branch comes pretty close in flavor. The main differences are that the menma isn't as good, and they use frisée instead of mizuna. On the plus side, they make their own noodles in-house rather than sourcing from Sun Noodle. The service here is also very good. Tried the Tsukemen and Shio bowls, both reasonably priced compared to Ippudo. read more

When I heard Afuri Ramen is opening in NYC, I was very excited because I actually ate Afuri Ramen in Roppongi, Japan last year in September! I went with a friend on June 28th since we felt like getting ramen on a Friday evening. We got the bar counter seats. The place is definitely spacious, and the people were accommodating. I got the Spicy Karaage Don and Yuzu-Tsuyu Tsukemen. My friend got the Aburi Koro Chashu Don and also got the customized Tsukemen with grilled chashu. The rice bowl dons came relatively quick (although my friend got his 10 minutes later after I got mine). The rice bowl don with the karaage were really good and rich with flavor with a touch of yuzu. For some reason, the tsukemen took nearly an hour to arrive after putting down the orders. Maybe the long wait was because the location was still relatively new, orders are backed up, and noodles were popular choices? We even end up finishing our rice bowls waiting for the tsukemen, despite taking our time eating. When the tsukemen finally arrived, we decided to chow down. The taste was there and adding in the yuzu dipping sauce for the yuzu taste makes the tsukemen even more delicious. However, it is debatable if the nearly hour wait for the tsukemen was worth it. Overall, I would say come to this spot for the vibes in the Williamsburg area and a craving for rice bowl don and noodles, especially for yuzu lovers. I believe the food waiting time will improve overall down the line since the place is still relatively new in NYC and people looked like they enjoyed the presence of being there. Will consider coming here again for other food choices in the menu. read more
