Antidote has been on my list for ages but I'm glad I waited to go with a group of four instead of it just being me and my partner because the menu is vast and pretty much all of the dishes are ideal for sharing. Though I was surprised that the vibe of the restaurant itself seemed very curated in a way that's emblematic of the the way in which Williamsburg more broadly continues to move towards this clean/green/minimalistic aesthetic (which is enjoyable but uniform), it was still a great time filled with fun cocktails a nice variety of food. We came here at 8:30 on a Saturday night. Though it was relatively easy to book a reservation for a part of four here, it was pretty full and lively when we arrived. The space itself is quite big, with an expansive dining room full of big tables for larger parties. As I mentioned, the decor had the whole clean/green vibe that retail and restaurants alike are leaning into these days, though interestingly on the perimeter there were some fun little antique items like very old wooden furniture or saloon-esque pianos. As a party of four we were sat at a round table in one of these perimeter spaces which gave us a nice vantage point. I had heard that the cocktails here were not to be missed and I can see why. They're creative, thoughtful, and organized on the menu such that you can get a sense of the flavor profile before ordering (relative sweetness/sourness/strength) before ordering. I started with the Truemartini (Truman Vodka, Gin, Osmanthus, Fontbonne, Rockeys, Dry Vermouth, Blue Cheese Olive) which I absolutely loved. I suppose it gives dirty martini because of the blue cheese olive but it's far more complex and herbaceous than your typical martini so it's honestly in its own category. I then got the Hanami Drop (Citadelle Gin, Ovo Vodka, Jasmine, Rockey's Umeshu, Lime) which was good but because I wasn't really in the mood for a gimlet it did not hit in the way I had hoped but that is ultimately my fault and not theirs. Food-wise, there is a lot to choose from, which makes deliberation quite difficult. At least from what we ordered, it seems that the apps are smallest, the veggie/rice sides are in the middle, and not surprisingly the entrees are quite a bit bigger (and filling). Eats, below: Wood Ear Mushroom Salad (Poached and mixed with chili and lemon sauce): A Far and away the best veggie we got. The texture was perfection and the preparation itself was relatively simple in a way that really let the mushrooms sing. Cucumber Salad (Tossed in scallion & ginger sauce, sesame oil): B+ Really nice flavors, just felt the texture was very very slightly bordering on slimy (I think it was because of the way the sauce interacted with the natural wateriness of the cucumber) which I hesitate to say because I don't it to fully turn anyone off but I can't think of a more fitting way to describe it. Kung Pao Chicken (Peanuts, chili pepper and peppercorn): A Savory and delicious, didn't have all that much of this because the prawns really drew me in but this is a no-brainer and a crowd pleasure. Tea Smoked Duck (Bone-in smoked duck, hoisin sauce): A- Solid execution, nothing too memorable but still very good and a decent portion. Fei - Hong Spicy Prawn (Tiger Prawn, crispy pepper, peanut): A As I mentioned, this dish had my heart. Something about the combination of the prawn, sauce, and crispy pepper just made it feel like a texture and spice party that I absolutely loved. Glazed Eggplant: B+ Flavors were there, would've liked if there was a little more crispiness. It's a sizable portion -- significantly bigger than the cucumber and mushrooms salads (which are in the apps rather than the sides section) so keep that in mind when ordering. read more

They do have match boxes in the front of this resturant as well for those who collect! -Fei-Hong Fries: These were pretty crispy and a cool take on regular french fries! -Crab Tofu: This was so good, highly recommend this dish. Conflicted about this place-- I'd heard such amazing things about it and I really wanted to like it but the food didn't quite match up with what I was expecting. The ambiance is nice and very roomy, clearly targeted towards a younger crowd. Presentation of all the dishes was good too. The flavors were definitely more catered to an American palate (as my sister put it, it felt like an American restaurant with Chinese dishes-- from the decor to the lack of complimentary tea or rice, menu was written only in English, vast majority of customers were non-Asian, none of which is /bad/, but if you're looking for a more traditional Chinese restaurant, Antidote isn't it). Onto the dishes-- the favorite hands down was the sliced pork with garlic sauce, which was beautifully plated and super flavorful. DongPo pork belly was very tender, just much sweeter than I'm used to. The green peppercorn fish had lots of numbing spice and the fish was very tender; it just wasn't as sour or spicy as I was hoping. Crab tofu was basically all yolk flavor and no crab flavor (not surprising, given how little crab they added). Sautéed pea shoots were very fresh and cooked well. Cocktail list is also super solid. Came here on a sunday evening at 6:45 PM with a reservation for 3, and were seated fairly quickly. The interior was very classy, but it was a bit loud. We ordered fei hong fries, crab tofu, duck fried rice, kung pao chicken, and bok choy with garlic. My favorite dishes were the crab tofu and the kung pao chicken. I'm Chinese and from the San Gabriel Valley in Southern California so I know Chinese food and this place did it right. I made a reservation for 3 at 8:30 pm on a Friday night and it was definitely necessary. The wait for walk-ins was pretty extensive. The restaurant itself is super dark and pretty loud but that didn't matter to me once I started eating the food. It was fall off the bone tender and very flavorful. The fish stew was good if you enjoy numbing Szechuan peppercorn. Oh, I'm obsessed with Antidote --it's no wonder everyone raves about this spot. They do get busy, so be sure to make reservations ahead of time. The restaurant is dark and moody with the aroma of Szechuan throughout. For drinks, my friend and I started off with the Unlocking Mandarin ($19) and Storm Cloud ($19). The fact that the mandarin came in a tea cup and cloud came in an orbit spinning cup already impressed us. The aesthetics of Antidote is well curated and detailed. Everything from their decor, drinks, and even the menu design. But the real star of the show is the food here. Everything looks so good that it was really hard to narrow down our picks, which means I'm already anticipating to return. Between the two of us, we ordered the Crab Tofu ($26), Sichuan Chili Fried Chicken ($26), and Fish Blossom ($34). Everything was fantastically cooked and left us wanting more. The crab tofu was a really unique dish and an absolute must order everytime. The salted egg sauce had me eating more rice than I normally would because it was so good. I loved the presentation of the fish blossom, which was still crispy even with the sweet and sour sauce. Probably because we were some of the first guests / the food was probably pre cooked in some giant pot. Mapo tofu hit the spot, was spicy for me but not wildly (I'd consider my spice tolerance average). Arrived piping hot. Order rice to go with! The green peppercorn fish stew was my friend's pick. I'm not that used to the flavor of green peppercorns but I liked the pickled vegetables and noodles in this. Definitely gives that tingly numbing feeling. The dandan noodles were thin and chewy. I liked everything overall - also portion sizes were quite large. Service was amazing, again maybe because it wasn't too busy yet. I looked across the room at one point and immediately locked eyes with a server on the far end. I didn't make any gesture or say anything and she zipped over so quickly. I swear, telepathy. We were asking for all sorts of extra silverware/plates/napkins throughout and everyone was so prompt and friendly. My rating is purely for the taste and quality of the food and vibe, and not for their lack of cultural sensitivity. The food itself is good. Cucumber salad is delicious salty and refreshing, steamed fish filet with green chilis has just enough heat to tickle, and the dongpo pork is so tender. The vibes are good too, with a wall of plants and dim lighting that brings focus to the center of the table. BUT the Filipino erasure is crazy, especially during Filipino American History Month. No way they're calling ube, a yam endemic to the Philippines, a "Japanese sweet potato." Not only are they two completely different crops, but they're also using ube as a trend rather than respecting the ingredient, where it comes from, and its cultural significance, especially when they're packaging it in a very Filipino dessert. Honestly wouldn't have thought anything of it if they called it "Japanese sweet potato flan," but if they're putting "ube," then be accurate about it. I ordered from this place on Uber Eats when I was in NYC and it was so incredibly good that I literally want to fly back just to dine in person. I'm still dreaming about the woodear salad mushrooms, and the dandan noodles were absolutely amazing. The kongpao chicken was actually properly spicy too, which I loved! I will say absolute sleeper, surprise hit of our trip because I chose this place on a whim and made a reservation a day before we showed up. I love that we all said we were too full to order too much then absolutely over-ordered peeer the usual l o l Foodwise we went with the cucumber salad, the wood ear mushrooms, and cold noodles to start. All three of these were stellar though the mushrooms were suuuuper refreshing for a warm day and really stood out. For the mains, my omnivore friends had the tea smoked duck, the fish filet, and a beef dish. For my vegetarian friendly self we did the caramel eggplant, the garlic eggplant, and the mapo tofu. I will say every single thing I tried was delicious and my husband could certainly vouch for the meat/seafood dishes. My fave bite of the night was the garlic eggplant with its perfect umami, savory goodness. I'm a sucker for eggplant what can I say? Terrible management - we ordered online but mistakenly chose Brooklyn location, not E 20th st, Manhattan's newer spot. We quickly realized our mistake and called them within a minute. Amazingly they refused to do anything, $60order, nothing, wouldn't move it to Manhattan wouldn't give a refund or even a discount, not even an apology. This has never happened,,,,what is customer worth in a 10 year period, what is their recommendation worth. I can honestly say that the manager who decided to F us should be fired immediately. He has cost their new outpost well over a thousand dollars in the next few years, and of course I will tell all my neighbors and anyone else. SERVICE - located in Williamsburg walking distance from Bedford Ave - large interior with tall ceilings, modern industrial inspired decor - recommend making a reservation as it can get crowded during busier hours - tables for smaller groups of 2-4 or slightly larger groups - ambiance good for a semi casual meal - servers are polite and attentive, frequently clearing plates and refilling water without being pushy - food served very quickly MENU - sichaun menu with wide selection of small plates and entrees - vegan/vegetarian options available - average price FOOD - spicy cabbage (7/10): five rolls of steamed Napa cabbage covered in a sweet and sour chili sauce. This was one of the vegetarian appetizers and our server told us it was a more popular one. I was intrigued as I do not usually associate cabbage with having a lot of flavor. This was served almost immediately after we ordered. I enjoyed how the cabbage was soft enough to chew but not so soft that it fell apart when picking it up. The sauce is more on the sweet side, with flavors similar to a dumpling dipping sauce. I would recommend getting this even if you are not a huge cabbage fan as it can be eye opening. - mapo tofu (9/10): silken tofu cubes in a spicy broth. This is a classic sichuan dish and it was nice that it was vegetarian as some places put pork into it. While I did enjoy it, I would have it as a shareable entree with other dishes that could add freshness and crunch. - dan dan noodles (10/10): thin wheat noodles with mustard greens on a spicy sesame sauce. We requested to make this vegetarian by removing the pork and adding pickled mustard greens instead. This was my favorite of the dishes we ordered. It is very flavorful with the fresh greens and the sichuan peppercorns. I did not find it overly oily which was also enjoyable. Highly recommend getting this. WOULD I GO BACK? Yes!
