Let me update the review on this barbershop... This is an urban barbershop in a beach retirement community. It would be more suited for Oceanside than Carlsbad Village. The barber (assuming he was even licensed) was on his phone the entire cut. The music was vulgar and I would definitely rethink taking children into this place. The barbers overall were quiet; so quiet in fact they didn't acknowledge customers. The only upside was that the cut came out well enough for a uniform inspection, but the experience nor the cut were worth the cost. There are far better shops with a welcoming atmosphere within walking distance in The Village. Check out Garcia's or Textur (it's a salon with a licensed barber); both are on State Street. Garcia's is between Carlsbad Village Dr and Grand, Textur is between Carlsbad Village Dr and Oak. Small update: Positive note; this place is part of the reason I got my barber license. I went in the shop on Wednesday 1/23/14 and I usually get cleaned up with Justin but he was off that day. So Jaime took care of me. He gave me the (Miami Special) the cleanest shave ever. He used some products on my face that my face smooth. Thanks Jaime for making my wedding day 1/24/14 awesome. The next morning I was getting married so he really plugged me up. Prior to coming here to get my fade on, I was loyal to a barber for 13 years from the age of 15 to 28...I let no one touch my hair besides my old barber...But one trip to this shop changed all that. Eric hooked it up fat, no joke. I have a 6 inch scar in my head and he was able to hide it with his sick barber skills and still touch up the fade. I've been blessed with what some might call, thin hair - it's not all the way gone, and I don't want to just buzz it, so I decided to see the professionals. Personality is what sets this place apart from the chain salons/ cookie cutter hair cut places. The guys here are pro. The shop is relaxed, fun, and has a gritty man-cave feel. This is a great Barber Shop. I enjoy getting that relaxing time in the chair, away from work and everything else. I imagine its how my wife feels getting her hair, nails or whatever else done. Negatives: I specified what I wanted done and that was not done. Unprofessional atmosphere. Two employees walked in with hot dogs and ate in front of clients, smelled the whole joint up. Was cash only. No signs that say that though, inside or out. Did not face me towards the mirror one time during the haircut for me to see what was going on. This is a true barbershop with legitimate barbers. There are a lot of barber shops in North County that you can receive a face shave with a straight razor and a legitimate fade. I am glad this fad is coming back! However, some of the barbershops around here have that tattoo parlor feel and lack in customer service. This is not the case for ATG. The shop is clean and professional looking, decorated well, and has the barbershop feel. The prices are comparable to other barbershops. Yes, it's more expensive than Super Cuts...but if you are a dapper dan man like myself and want the skills of a true barber, you're going to have to pay for it. It was about $45 for a beard trim, straight razor line up (of the beard) and a nice fade haircut with straight razor around the edges. Jake was my barber and he was awesome. This was by far the best beard line up I have ever had. I got compliments on the hair cut too. He took his time and made very precise shaves and it came out looking very clean and well edged- exactly the look I wanted. You have to be careful with a beard line up or you go from "cool beard" status to "d-bag" status real quick. It can be a little scary letting someone touch your face with a straight razor, but I never had any doubts with Jake. You can tell he's been a barber for years. I could not be happier with my hair cut, the beard trim, and the over all service. I set another appointment with him on the spot- definitely just found my new barber! Such an awesome barber shop! Newer to the area, and based on Yelp reviews we checked it out. My teenage son is very picky with his cut, and had a hard time with going elsewhere. This is a LEGIT, I repeat LEGIT barber shop. I have been going to Against The Grain for almost 5 months now, and I have never been disappointed. Every time you walk in its always welcoming, doesn't matter if you are a MALE or FEMALE! The barbers here are extremely talented and use both scissor (which is hard to find to me) and clippers. Every barber in the shop does straight razor fades, shaves and line ups, using warm shaving lotion (like the "OLD" days). I have never had an issue with setting an appointment and getting in with out a hassle. My barber I see is Eric and he knows his customers well, after the first time he knew how I wanted and needed my haircut. I go in sit down and enjoy the cut and shave. A shave that you can't find hardly anywhere with that straight razor. And knows his products for each customer Jaime and Justin are legit as well. Both very talented and know what they are doing. They know their products for each customer as well and are very welcoming and take their time when cutting each customers hair as well. Whether with scissors or clippers, its always very well done. Both great barbers and know their customers! All in All you when you to Against The Grain you will never be disappointed and you will always leave looking better then you came in looking. An almost 5 experience. I came in and it was fairly slow, thank gosh they are able to take in walk-ins!!! Huge plus on my end who desperately needed some maintenance before an event I was attending in the latter part of the week. I enter and is taken aback about the urban style nature they got going on here. This is starkly different then the old fashion feel that one would get from the new popular straightedge in vista. Nonetheless I can tell I was in for an experience. Eric was my barber and he n I instantly hit it off with conversation. I like a conversationalist as it made the awkward silence moments non-existent. Now mind u, it's been AGES since I went to a barber over a salon to get my hair done but I wanted clippers style results. I told him what I wanted and while the results were somewhat what I wanted, it wasn't truly all I imagined or pictured when we discussed hair options. I think part of me felt rushed because there were others in the lobby waiting to be assisted. However, I can also see how he would take it when I said I work for a financial institution and that it had to be somewhat conservative given I work in an industry where conservative is a plus. Overall I left satisfied with my haircut and could see myself coming back for a touch up and cut closer to my sides and a bit more edgier result. My feedback/suggestion would be, if I say, do what you think is best and what do u see us doing with my hair, it's your opportunity to showcase ur talents in envisioning what u can do with a bit of control but creativity. Old school type barber shop. Came in for a cut 2 weeks ago. I was not disappointed. The guys were friendly and I stepped up to their chair. They still use a razor to get a super close cut when shaping your cut. That's old school, and it makes you feel like you are in a legit barber shop. Got my cut exactly as I wanted. Great first experience at this barbershop. It has been a few weeks since my last cut and my usual shop was booked (appointment based). So I used YELP! to find another barbershop in the area and Against The Grain had great reviews. Good thing I decided to come here. The place looks cool and the staff are nice. I'm used to scheduling my haircuts, so waiting for an hour to be seated in a chair was the toughest part. Once I described what I wanted done on my hair, the result came out clean. -mid fade to a zero with a side part-. The barber did a great job. This is my new favorite place to get my cut on in the village. Ok, I might be on the old side of the targeted clientele and maybe I wasn't raised in the surf/skateboard culture and I don't have nearly the number of tattoos that the barbers here have but there is an art to a proper haircut. These guys take the the same care of your hair as the traditional barbers but they do it to slightly louder music and different music genres than their forefathers. They get out the straight razor and line up your hair when they are done cutting it. I have being here on Thursdays, Friday, and Sundays and there is always a wait here, best to call ahead to see if they are open or if there is a line 2 hours long.
