Saturday night, takeout night! The fam and I went with Nom Nom tonight and chose a couple of…read moredifferent dishes out. The hubby recently got takeout from Nom Nom a couple of weeks ago, and forgot how good it was, while it has been a couple of years since I've had takeout from here. We ordered the sesame balls, veggie spring rolls, sweet potato croquettes, tofu spicy fried noodles, and Singapore noodles. The sesame balls and the veggie spring rolls were reminiscent of the stuff you'd get at an AYCE restaurant, but they were still good. The sweet potato croquettes was a first for me, and they were very much like a large hash brown, but super fluffy inside. My suggestion is to wait for them to cool down a bit and eat them warm or room temperature. My toddler loved these, but I thought they were just OK. The Korean spicy fried noodles was the star of the show, although a bit too greasy for my liking, they did hit the spot. I really enjoyed their take on cooking tofu. I think they took deep fried puffed tofu, flattened it down and fried it with the noodles, where it resembled sliced pork. There was a lot of nice color to it, as well as a slight char, and the texture was amazing. Keep it mind, it was a tad greasy as well. I didn't care for the Singapore noodles. My hubby loves this dish, but said he's had it made better else where, so its all personal preference. I do like that you can customize a lot of the meals into vegetarian meals, so major kudos to that. I don't crave Asian cuisine all that often, so I don't think I will be rushing back, but it was nice to switch things up and try out something new.

TL;DR/The Short Version: Pan-asian food court vendor in…read morePlace d'Orleans. The Chicken Teriyaki was the best I've ever had at a food court! The Long Version: I love supporting small independent businesses and have found great eats in food courts, at food trucks and in industrial parks. So when I saw that the Place d'Orleans food court had a new vendor that wasn't a chain, I wanted to check out. I first noticed this eatery in July 2025 but it opened in May 2025. The bonus was that the mall was having this promotion for all of July 2025 where if you spend $25 or more at one participating food court vendor after 5pm Monday -Saturday you take your receipt to Guest Services and you get a $10 mall gift card. What a great deal! And Umi Eatery was on the list of participating vendors! Umi Eatery sells pan-asian fare. They have Bento boxes, teriyaki, ramen, udon, poke bowls, bibimbap, Tanghulu, mochi, bubble tea and more. I got the chicken teriyaki ($9.99) and the beef bibimbap ($16.99). The chicken teriyaki was fantastic! Easily the best chicken teriyaki I've ever had at a food court. I found it superior to places like Teriyaki Experience and Edo Japan. And even better than some sit-down restaurants I've had it at. It was full of flavour and not oily/greasy at all. And it wasn't too saucy or wet. It had chicken, rice, bean sprouts, broccoli, red cabbage and carrots. The portion size was good. I will definitely get this again. The beef bibimbap was very respectable for fast food. Not as good as most sit-down restaurants, but better than some sit-down restaurants I've been to. It had white rice, carrots, zucchini, bean sprouts, kimchi, beef and a sunny side up fried egg. It came with a side of Gochujang. I enjoyed it, but found the chicken teriyaki more flavourful and better bang for my buck. I shared both dishes with my parents and they agreed with my assessment. Service was excellent. The man working there was both the cashier and the cook and he was very courteous and efficient. He even advised me of the mall promotion when he gave me my receipt. I had taken advantage of the mall promotion with another vendor in the food court previously and not only did they not mention the promotion but they didn't even give me a receipt and I had to ask for it. So customer service at Umi Eatery reigns supreme! Lol. I returned on a subsequent visit and got their chicken teriyaki again and their Takoyaki (6 pieces for $6.99). The Takoyaki was refried from frozen, but still very tasty for what it was. And they were generous with the bonito flakes. I asked for no sesame seeds and they happily accommodated. They are my new favourite vendor in this food court! Lots of free parking in the mall parking lot. Also very accessible by public transit since Place d'Orleans is an OC Transpo hub. I called in my order and picked it up at the store. The Chicken Katsu bowl was my favourite. It had pieces of battered and deep-fried chicken, lettuce, sushi rice, a small amount of cucumbers, avocados and oshinko. It had Kewpie mayo and also Nori. I asked for no sesame seeds. The chicken pieces were lean meats and the batter wasn't excessive. The chicken was crunchy on the outside, but the meat was tender and moist. I loved the chicken. The sushi rice had a great texture. I just feel like the bowl would be better with more vegetables though. Same with the General Tao's Chicken bowl. It had the same vegetables. It didn't have Nori or Kewpie, but had General Tao sauce instead. The chicken was similar to the Chicken Katsu, just a different sauce. The bowls were tasty, but could have had more vegetables. Service was courteous and efficient. My order was ready in about 15 minutes from when I called in my order. The restaurant is takeout only. It's very small. There is no space for eating in. The menu said you're supposed to get 6 varieties, but I only got 5 different types, but I got 30 pieces in total (and I think I didn't get the cucumber maki, which I think is meh anyway, so I was cool with what I got). The menu says you're supposed to get California roll, salmon Maki, spicy tuna roll, shrimp roll, cucumber maki and spicy avocado roll. I called in my order and requested no sesame seeds, and they were able to accommodate that no problem. Service was courteous and efficient. They said my order would be ready in 30 minutes and when I arrived 30 minutes later, it was ready. The place is takeout only, there is absolutely no place to dine in, it's just a small counter. The presentation was like grocery store sushi, lol. Pieces not all that uniform and squished together into a box. Luckily, the taste was much better than grocery store sushi. I mean, it's no fancy Japanese restaurant sushi, but for takeout sushi and considering the price, it was a great deal. I like that it's a small independently owned restaurant. And since Blackburn Hamlet doesn't have many restaurants, I hope it will do well. Last time I tried to order was a Saturday evening and I just walked in and they were inundated with orders and apologized and said it would take over an hour. I said I would try another time and call in my order, and that's what I did (on a Sunday evening) and it worked out great. It's in a strip mall. Same strip mall as Metro and Jumbo Restaurant (Chinese takeout). Lots of free parking.
