That said, if there was only one dish to order, it would have to be the Oh WOW Laulau. Wow, indeed! No where else on earth have I found vegan laulau, let alone such a stellar rendition. Traditionally consisting of fatty pork and/or fish steamed in taro leaves, this version eschews the meat in favor of hearty root vegetables, adding creamy coconut into the mix for richness. Not to be overlooked is the Tofu Poke provided on the side, claiming to be spicy but really bearing just enough warmth to taste perfectly balanced. This was easily my personal favorite from the small sampling of dishes provided, but it's a close call when all the options are so good. Another front runner is the BBQ Portobello Sandwich. Mushrooms marinated in a bright, smoky barbecue sauce practically sing between two whole wheat buns. Coconut slaw tops off the assemblage with just the right amount of subtle sweetness to contrast the deeply savory flavors within. Simpler but no less spectacular dishes include the Roasted Veg Platter and Roasted Veg Avocado Sandwich. The way that the vegetables are treated with respect, from the moment they're harvested from nearby farms to the care taken when they reach the kitchen is evident with every bite. Cooked with care and proffered generously with each serving, even the basics make the trek out here worthwhile. I'm still trying to recreate that impossibly umami gravy offered on the side. It's one of those things that are so astoundingly, inconceivably delicious, it's impossible to deconstruct. Each entree promises an ideal amount of food; satisfying diners without over-stuffing them. That said, you'll still want to make room for dessert, especially when you see the towering bowls full of Outta This Swirled Soft Serve. Cool, naturally sweet spirals of banana-based soft serve are dressed to the nines with cacao sauce that hardens much like magic shell, granola and coconut flakes tumbling down the mountainous terrain, and fresh fruits that vary based on local availability- Expect papaya always to be in ample supply, based on the thriving papaya trees on premise. This was a savior when driving around the windward side of island and looking for vegetarian lunch. We ordered Portobello burger which had mushroom pieces instead of the patty as I had assumed but tasted good nevertheless. Hummus wrap was good too but cold contrary to my expectation again. Overall nice place but not as good as other reviews made it sound. Another thing to note is that they don't have restrooms. You can go across the parking lot in MacD for that. read more

I have seen Ai Love Nalo all of my Instagram feed so I just had to try it. We ventured out to Waimanalo on a Saturday and found the spot pretty easily. Their service window is around the backside of the building. But it's not in the traditional sense that you walk up and order. Everything is done online so you have to scan the QR code to purchase food online and pay for it. They will let you know when it's ready via text or will open the window. Preferably we should've ordered our food beforehand, but I didn't know that this was their ordering process. While we waited for our food, they have a very beautiful back area that includes grass and a covered patio for eating. There are some games for kids to play with and toys. But it was a very peaceful spot that was fun to relax in. I ordered the medi bowl, oh wow laulau, Buddha bowl, and the mini ulu chowder bowl. The Hawaiian food was good and I really like the flavor of the tofu poke. I wish there was some lomi lomi tomato or poi to go with it. The medi bowl had a great mix of toppings, my favorite being the beet hummus and I wish there was more! The Buddha bowl again was lacking in dressing. I see why there is alway extra dressing options with their bowls because I felt that there wasn't enough in each. The ulu chowder had rice in it which wasn't my thing and it made the whole soup taste like barley soup. I wish they had just done a chowder with ulu as a potatoes and every other normal thing since I am not a fan of grains in my chowder. Plant based is a bit of a tough sell for my family but I was pleasantly surprised to watch two kids fight over beet hummus and falafels. I found their food really satisfying - fresh, flavorful, local, and you don't leave feeling gross. We got the medi bowl (fave), Buddah bowl (really close second), and bbq Porto sandwhich (really delicious but just not as wow as the bowls). If you're going to share order more of the falafels - they were great. I thought the servings and prices were reasonable (burger was a touch small). This plant based paradise in Waimanalo is back! After a hiatus Ai Love Nalo is back to serving up vegan / vegetarian food that supports our local, regenerative farmers. Their mission is really about feeding Hawaiʻi healthy, culturally appropriate, and high-nutrient foods. A truly farm-to-table spot that puts community first. Things have changed a bit since they've reopened. Unfortunately, they've closed their indoor dining. You can order from their website, they have a QR code on the street facing side of the building. On the backside of the building is a window that you can pick up your food from once you get a text that your order is ready. They have an outdoor garden eating area with a nice big lawn. It really feels like you're at a family paina. We brought our dog and he loved it out there- even with the chickens walking around! I usually get their laulau but they were out of stock-- so I ordered their kaukau lūʻau, which is like a plant based version of squid lūʻau-- with ulu and taro. That comes with a side salad and their tofu poke. If you don't eat fish-- I swear their spicy tofu poke is the closest thing to poke you'll ever get. I also got their "it's mint to be" smoothie-- a blend of banana, coconut milk, mint cocoa nibs. read more

I remember awhile ago when Ai Love Nalo closed. Wellll they are baaaa-aack! I'm happy to see a waimanalo business re-open. The building is one door down from Mcdonalds, and the building itself is their kitchen. So you go around the back and order from a window or use the QR code (how modern!) and then wait for a text or for your name to be called. Then, behind the building, you can enjoy your food at one of the tables under the tent. My husband and I recently came just to get ice cream and it was so good. The soft serve kind of tasted like soy milk, but it's probably a mix of different non-dairy things. It was topped with some granola, honey, fruit and chocolate sauce(?). I will definitely be back for lunch and/or a smoothie. They also have fruit parfaits that you can get topped with poi. I've never thought to eat poi with fruit before.... It's all vegan and very healthy. the workers here are sweet. One of them is my former student and she loves working here so I feel good about giving them my business knowing that they take care of their workers. read more

I have been wanting to try this place for forever and am so thrilled I finally got to! I am sometimes in Waimanalo for work, but often that's on a Monday or Tuesday- the days they are closed. (they ARE now open on Wednesdays so someone should update their hours on here!). I was also nervous because of reviews saying how long they had to wait for their food so I didn't want to risk going on a lunch break and not having enough time to eat. Figured out that I could put in my order online as I was getting ready to leave work and then would only have a little wait after I got there, which was a totally reasonable compromise! As to the wait though - it is worth it for food this good. If you want fast food there's a McDonald's next door but then you are eating that and not this! And this is not the kind of stuff I can make myself at home, so extra worth it. I will say - I am not a vegan, but I am lactose intolerant, so I really appreciate being able to grab food where I do not have to question what is in it! And this food is DELICIOUS. The first time I went I got a Scrambler Wrap (with no rice) and a side order of the regular Tofu Poke. The regular Tofu poke tasted good, but it was a little more oily than I would prefer, and it definitely tastes like tofu, not fish. The Scrambler Wrap though... you guys I have not stopped thinking about that wrap since I ate it. The tofu perfectly took the place of scrambled eggs, and there were so many amazing veggies and flavors mixed in that I have actually craved it ever since. The wrap was nicely thin and stretchy, holding everything together without overpowering the stars of the show with a mouthful of flavorless carb. When (not if) I order it again I might try it as the plate and compare, but honestly as someone who, again, is not a vegan, this was amazing and I recommend it to anyone who just wants to try vegan food and see what they think. The second time I went was today (and realized I hadn't left a review before- oops!) and I was thrilled that they weren't sold out of their Laulau yet (they had been the first time) so as much as I was ono for the Scrambler I decided to get the Laulau as I had also seen good reviews for it. I loved that it came with a side of tofu poke (I opted for the spicy this time), and a side salad with choice of dressing (the scrambler came with a side salad too). The Laulau was delicious and I can see why people love it, but to be perfectly honest for me the scrambler is where it's at in terms of flavor explosion. If you prefer your food to be less flavor explosion you will enjoy this quite nicely! The Spicy Tofu Poke I definitely preferred to the regular. It was not too spicy, but had a ton more flavor. Since there was nothing on the scoop of brown rice that also came with I mixed it in with the poke which helped with the oiliness. It's really tasty! But still tastes like tofu not fish. Since I'm not a vegan I will still be preferring my ahi, but if you don't do fish you will probably enjoy this quite a bit! The side salad was the perfect portion, and I did enjoy their creamy sesame avocado dressing (lightly dressed, you can order extra dressing if you like). They do have 2 2-tops and 2 4-top tables for inside seating, or lots of seating outside in the back. Food comes in takeout containers so easy to take it with you or keep your leftovers without creating extra work of washing dishes or extra waste of disposable plates. I am quite surprised this cafe gets high ratings. Perhaps because there are not many options around in Waimanalo? The food is just strange. We ordered two lunch meals and neither was something to be excited about. Falafel was undercooked and practically raw inside with strong off putting beany chickpeas flavor. Baba ghanoush was not bad but has zero eggplant flavor, strangely thick and pasty. Beet hummus did not taste of beets either, but had a pretty pink color. Kale was so salty it was almost inedible. Tofu poke had good flavor but was way too spicy. Both meals came on beds of greens but no dressing was included, it is extra you have to ask for. Nothing was enjoyable. Fruit smoothies are good but I imagine that is hard to screw up. There is a good variety of options. There are only a few tables inside and it gets quite busy during lunch hour. They have a lovely outdoor seating area at the back with a well kept garden and cute local chickens hang around for whatever falls off the table. The wait can be very long. First time we ordered smoothies and strangely they took our order and 10min later came to apologize that the machine was broken. We opted for a shake and that took another 10 minutes. Second time we ordered food and the owner warned us of half hour wait. In reality we got our food in over an hour. Big negative is lack of bathrooms. They literally send you to McDonals across the street. There is not even a sink to wash your hands before the meal. Bottom line: don't come here during lunch time because the wait is not worth it. Skip the food and get a smoothie to go. And don't stay long since you will be looking for a bathroom soon. read more

I ordered the daily dose smoothie. We walked around the building wondering where to order, then saw a QR code with the menu. We scanned it and placed our order. After we waited ten minutes I got a text that said our order is ready. My husband waited in the courtyard and no one acknowledged him until another confused customer knocked on the window to ask how he can order. My favorite spot in Nalo! Am so thrilled it reopened. Many ono vegan options and we love the tofu scramble and open seating in the back. Just miss the enclosed garden / hidden jungle oasis it once had but understand the need to open the space more for events and community gatherings. read more

I was so glad to find out Ai Love Nalo is back open! I ordered Oh Wow Lau Lau with poi for takeout today, and everything was just as delicious as I remembered it from years ago! My food was ready in less than 15minutes and was easy to pick up (make sure to follow the signs to the back for the pickup window!). I hope they open up for in-person dining soon! read more
