Didn't try the sushi but we each ordered two different dishes - chicken with broccoli in brown sauce and I had the green Thai chicken curry. Bland, lifeless. Finished about half and we were done - didn't take the rest home which is unusual for us. It's the next day and we're both feeling not good, I wouldn't say it's food poisoning but we're somewhere on that spectrum. Plus the service was less than friendly or attentive on a Saturday night. Just ate at Aikou for the first time with my girlfriend and it was great. It's BYOB so we brought a bottle of sake with us. The place is very clean and open. Before our dinner came, the waiter came over and brought a seafood salad for us that was free of charge, courtesy of one of the sushi chefs. We then shared a sushi dinner for two which came with two specialty rolls. Sushi was extremely fresh, delicious, and plentiful. We finished the meal off with desserts. I had the fried banana with vanilla ice cream and my girlfriend had fried green tea ice cream. We both enjoyed the meal and plan on coming to Aikou again very soon. read more

This place has good sushi but terrible customer service and an extremely rude front desk staff. They charge $1 per side of sauce which is ridiculous. Not to mention they FORGET the sauces half of the time. The front desk staff are rude and unfriendly. Regardless of if the food is good the staff is a huge turn off. Do not order the Thai basil chow fun unless you like an absurd about of oil. I couldn't even stomach them and had to throw the meal away. I had paid extra for chicken, but there wasn't any to be found. Their online menu also lists the Vietnamese spring rolls as coming with 4 rolls and there were only 3 delivered. For years we have enjoyed dining at Aikou but during Covid, their delivery service has been an absolute Godsend! We always have to start out with the Kimchee Seafood Salad, the tangy flavor profile will tantalize your tastebuds. All of their soups are wonderful. The complex flavors of the House Seafood Soup will leave you craving it on a regular basis. Their sushi and sashimi are ALWAYS extremely fresh. The owner or lady at the front is the nastiest meanest lady I have ever encountered at a restaurant . First they charge $1 for extra sauces, don't include the sauces in the order , and then try to tell me I am lieing about not receiving sauces AFTER I DROV ALL THE WAY BACK. So rude. We have been eating at Aikou for years. Tonight we went in and we sat for an hour and a half with no food and eventually walked out without eating. They were rude, didn't offer anything other than "there are tables ahead of you" and just completely ignored our multiple concerns. They didn't say anything else and just let us sit there. I've been here several times but my last visit was one of complete horror. I walked in a day or two after new years to pick up an order I had placed just 30 minutes earlier. I had the spicy maki combo and upon picking it up said to the man at the counter "oh, it's quiet in here today, huh?" He said it is like this after the holidays. I arrive back at my home 5 minutes later to eat my beloved sushi, half way into my meal I realize that every single roll tasted exactly the same and something just wasn't quite right. One hour later, My stomach is in severe pain, 2 hours later I am throwing up everywhere, 3 hours later I am in the hospital hooked up to an IV (3 bags altogether) for severe dehydration and had to be sedated because of the pain. Flash forward to two days later, my boyfriend called the restaurant to tell them what had happened to me, in turn they decided to call me from the number they had on file and question me about what I had and then continue to tell me it could not have possibly been their food. I asked the man if i could get off the phone to rest but he continued to tell me how "this has never happened before, no one has ever complained, so it wasn't their fault" I eventually hung up because nothing I said was right and I was exhausted. They clearly do not have the turn over rate that they should and because of that use the fish that has been lying around all day. I will never go back and I still haven't eaten sushi since the incident because of an irrational fear that other places might be so cheap to do the same thing. DON'T GO! Mind you, this is not a cheap place either, I've had cleaner sushi at shoprite. read more

Went to tryout a new japanese restaurant that recently opened in the same brick shopping center that also is home to Uproot. This location is a new spot for the restaurant which has sister locations in Flemington and Morristown. Friends who have dined at the Flemington location gave favorable reviews and so we thought we'd give it a try and went there for lunch on a Sunday afternoon and were the only diners in the place. The decor is modern, sleek and comfortable. The dining room is spacious with ample room between tables and I did notice a sushi bar located towards the back of the room with a Blue Marlin mounted on the rear wall, but we sat in a table with a long running bench seat towards the front. The menu has primarily Japanese entrees but dose have some Thai influenced dishes. We ordered the avocado and cucumber roll for our daughter who quickly devoured the 6 good sized pieces stacked on a square serving plate. We ordered her a second order and began to sample the items we ordered- the Dynamite- a crab, mushroom cheesey appetizer served on a scallop shell- the dish was plain and I would consider it small for the price and though it was OK, i would not order it again. I had better luck with the spicy calamari salad served with a spicy lime dressing- the calamari was cooked perfectly and was quite tender- something I'd definitely order again. Other dishes we sampled were the Crispy Peppercorn Chicken which was very tasty and had a slightly sweet sauce. We tried the Thai basil noodles with shrimp and thought the dish was good but thought the wide noodles were overcooked and very soft, the sauce and the shrimp were excellent and if we were to order it again we'd get it with the chow fun noodles next time. We wanted to give the sushi a try so we ordered the spicy white tuna roll which was not spicy at all and the tuna was barely noticeable in the roll. The restaurant is BYBO and we ordered seltzer for our drinks which were served in a tall glass, I did notice that the server did charge for refills which I thought was excessive, I guess they have to start to offset the construction costs somehow. While our dining experience was good, I don't think we were wowed with the food and will likely let some time pass before we opt to try the food again. There are a lot of selections on the menu and perhaps we just choose items that were mediocre, but for now we hit other spots for our asian food fixes. read more

I went to aikou with my grandma.Aikou was not the worst but not the best.Aikou was very crowded and the interior was very nice. The first corse came it was the pork Goza. They were very good. The second corse came it was the shrimp and vegetable tempora. the shrimp was very good but it was a poor choice of vegetables. There were potatoes, sweet potatoes, and broccoli.the sushi pizza and sushi came. The sushi would have been good if the seaweed was not so tuff like tape! I think I still have it in my throat and we ate an hour ago! The sushi pizza was good but my grandma had a piece that was fishy and she couldn't finish it! This is a great option if you are looking for asian food in the warren area. There is a nice ambiance, somewhat dimly lit, good service and great food. We had a variety of dishes, shrimp shumai was great, sushi was great, and the brown sauce was delicious. Love, love, love Aikou. Sushi is consistently good and the menu has a lot of variety with Thai, Chinese and Japanese options. The service is excellent - servers are friendly and attentive. It's BYOB, family friendly and good for a date night too. Love the atmosphere -- modern and clean -- and they go out of their way to make their customers feel appreciated. The manager sent our table an appetizer on the house and a second time we visited, dessert for our teen daughters. We enjoy the experience so much, we eat there at least once a week...also had a family member from FL in for a visit and took her there - she asked to go back when she's in NJ again. Absolutely horrible! We got the sushi & sashimi for two and for $60 I'm not happy! The sushi did not include any eel, only a few white fishes and seldom salmon or tuna. The crazy tuna roll is a no-go! It is only 6 pieces and incredibly small. The tiger roll was alright but they don't tell you that every single roll you order they put the same horrible sauce all over it and it just ruins the roll. Never again. Quite possibly the worst experience I've ever had dining out. Horrid service and mediocre food at best. We arrived an hour before closing time, to be greeted with hostility and a not so friendly reminder that we should be "done by 10:45" (it closes at 11 on Fridays but okay). Which we we're fine with. We we're only ordering a couple of rolls and had no plans to leave late. Every five minutes, one of the waitresses came to remind us to hurry up. We ended up leaving at 10:40 after eating at our normal pace (we ordered two rolls each). The waitresses stood in a corner and visibly pointed at us and laughed the whole time. We arrived at 9:58, fully aware the restaurant closes at 11 (which does typically mean they allow new customers until 11 and stay open later to accommodate. But we know not to be rude and to come at least 1 hour prior to closing time) and were rushed and ridiculed through the whole dinner. Horrid. read more

I like the desserts here a lot. The food is good too. My family and I visit here pretty often. One of my family members is a fan of the sushi here. I also like their teriyaki dishes. Their menu is large with variety so probably a lot of different people will be able to find things they like here. During busy times, it can be somewhat noisy and crowded. Pretty disappointing. Second time I have been there and I doubt I'll be going back. First of all they forgot to write down my reservation and I had to show them my phone to prove that I called. The manager and the hostess never apologized once and they kept making excuses. As far as food goes, it was good, but not amazing. A lot of the appetizers involved fried food, and the soup was underwhelming. Sushi was pretty decent, and I have to say the waitresses were very nice (however I don't know if it made up for the rude management). Just had an amazing lunch here. The atmosphere is relaxing and friendly. The restaurant is extremely clean. Tables are not on top of eachother, you can just relax and enjoy your own conversation. The goyaza (pork dumplings) were so delicious that we had seconds as an appetizer. My chicken Thai basil tasted extremely fresh and was to the exact spiciness I requested. The udon soup my son had was very good too. We also enjoyed the delicious hot green tea. And the service was perfectly attentive. Just a great experience. read more
