I am a local have been coming to Tsuru for years. This is without a doubt the best Japanese cuisine you will find in the area.

It's proving hard to find a Japanese restaurant that impresses the taste buds. Went here with 7 others. Pros: plenty of parking, AC was comfortable even during a heat wave, service wasn't rushed. The place was quiet. Cons: the sushi was average but not amazing. I had the tuna belly appetizer with a friend. It was so unimpressive, I barely remember it. I ordered a bento box. It was standard but the chicken was very bland. The sauce didn't add much flavor at all. It's hard to mess up tempura so that was fine. The California roll was a half notch above supermarket. And the shumai tasted a bit fishy. Not terrible but just ok. Keep in mind the others seemed to enjoy the place immensely. The prices were fair. For a neighborhood spot geared at takeout it's fine. If you're looking for a dining experience, keep looking. read more

There are many Japanese restaurants in the Warren -stifling-Basking Ridge area, but this one has the best tempura. Very generous portions for the shrimp, and the chicken, and veggie alike. Seasoned and flavorful,crispy and delicious with the dipping sauce. I also really like the shumai, the steamed shrimp in a delicate wrap. Its soft without being mushy. The texture is just right. The gyoza is fine, not remarkable. The roast duck spring roll is also interesting, very crispy and mine was served with a pretty spicy sauce that I enjoyed. The sushi is fine, and the Magic Roll is a standout - lobster salad with mango whitefish with tempura flakes. Very good. I recommend the Crispy rock shrimp as well. The staff is friendly. Overall, really good food, definitely get any one of the tempura dishes and some shumai. read more

I was parking nearby and went for a stroll and stumbled across this place. I was pleasantly surprised by the ambiance, food quality and service. I had the Chefs special sushi deluxe which came with miso soup and salad. I was by myself and sat at sushi bar. Service was prompt and accurate and I was in and out in 20 pleasant minutes. The chefs, TVs and server kept me company. It was very pleasant. Remember to tip well. read more

I returned here and had a number of different types of rolls. All the fish appeared very fresh and of high quality from what I could tell. The ones I tried are below. Cosplay Roll - This was a special roll on the night I attended. It was rice paper wrapped salmon with spicy crunchy salmon, avocado, and mango sauce. This had a different texture to it because of the rice paper presence. It was very light, and the presence of the sesame seeds was a nice added touch. Tango Roll - This had a tuna and avocado filing that was topped with yellowtail, jalapeno, onion, and a jalapeno cicras sauce. This was my favorite roll of the day. I just really enjoyed all the toppings coming together. The sauce made it that much better too. Spicy Mama Roll - This contained spicy tuna, spicy yellowtail, spicy salmon, and asparagus wrapped by comdu seaweed. This was alright. It was my least favorite tried of the day, but I would still order it again. I liked the slight crunch from the asparagus. Tsuru Roll - This had a white fish tempura, spicy tuna, and avocado topped with black pepper tuna, tobiko, spicy coconut and a cilantro mayo. This was another pleasant tasting roll. I did not get a real good taste of the spicy coconut, however. The cilantro mayo provided a different touch to the overall roll. Mystic Roll - This had a spicy crunch tuna and an avocado filing with a tuna and red wine pear on top with black rice and a special sauce. I was most intrigued in trying this one because of the pear present. I never saw that with a sushi roll before and it did not disappoint. The pear had just enough sweetness to work well with the rest of the components of this roll. Sweet Potato Roll - This was extremely large. The warm sweet potato filing was soft and tasty. read more

Beware: Waitress and chef insist spoiled salmon = smoked salmon. The salmon in the Philadelphia Roll was spoiled and the roll looked pitiful, yet staff wasted nearly half an hour arguing, lying, and condescending instead of removing the $9.50 roll. Smoked salmon tastes different from spoiled salmon. Only after I overheard the chef telling the waitress, in Mandarin, to refund it was it taken off. Spoiled fish, dishonest staff, and pathetic rolls -- never again. read more

Nice ambiance. Quality food. The servers are extremely attentive which sometimes turns into a rushed experience. They brought our check out with the dessert which was rude. There were no costumers waiting and plenty of tables available. The wasabi tuna dumpling was tasty and fresh. Topped with a gold flake it was presented artfully. The fantasy pizza was very good. Half of the fantasy pizza was topped with tuna and avocado. The other half was topped with crab and mango. The "crust" was a crispy pancake which held it's shape really well and complimented the topping. The rolls are always good here and very filling. The only thing I'd say is it's not a place to have a relaxing dinner. read more

I have been going to Tsuru for almost a decade, and it never disappoints. Always fresh, quality, delicious sushi. Price has went up significantly over the past year, but I don't blame the restaurant for that since the price of everything has gone up ever since Biden became President, and the price is similar to comparable places in the area. Highly recommend the Ajisai Roll or the Atlanta Roll (or both!) with a side of the spicy mayo. The Hand Rolls are delicious also, always packed to the brim with fresh fish! read more

It's really a shame the service is so terrible; because their food is really *really* good! Their sushi is fresh and well made. The prices are also really reasonable; especially for bento box deal meals. The ambiance is nice. It's clean and they give you the really good napkins. Absolutely all of that is worth nothing when the staff literally throws your food at you, never checks back and hands you a check to essentially throw you out the door before you have the chance to order anything else. No one smiles. You are not thanked for coming. You'd think their goal is to make you incredibly uncomfortable so you GTFO after appetizers. I live down the street. I've tried again and again. What happened to Tsuru? We used to eat there often, and the food and service were first-rate. Because we're elderly and masked-up to protect us from Covid and picking up for take-out, the treatment we received was rude, curt, and "wait in your car." I asked for utensils and napkins, and received nothing. What did they think I was going to eat the salad and soup with? My fingers? I was met at the door and handed the food very quickly - the body language and demeanor made me feel completely unwelcome. They have succeeded. On top of that, the previously delicious shrimp tempura made with luscious, large prawns are no more and have been replaced by inferior, small shrimp, with no concomitant reduction in price. Many years ago, when I saw Japan's first opera "Tsuru," in the final scene the farmer wails and weeps as Tsuru -- the evening crane -- flies away. My words to the 2025 version of Tsuru is, "Farewell, Tsuru." read more

Let me get a confession out of the way. I'm no sushi expert. I like tuna and salmon and can tell if it is fresh. That's about the extent of my knowledge. We have now been to Tsuru twice and have enjoyed our meals very much. On both visits, my wife ordered some shrimp dumplings to start. Delicious. My first visit, the fried oysters were fried way past dead. Very disappointing. Second visit I ordered the roast duck spring rolls. It was not what I expected. Served cold. Roast duck, salad wrapped in rice paper served with a spicy mayo and soy. It was ok but not great. I thought they would be fried. Green tea is bland. On the other hand, the sushi was great. I forget what my wife ordered but she raved about it. On my last visit, I had two rolls- shrimp and asparagus tempura topped with spicy tuna. Outstanding! On my first visit, I had two Fireballs, spicy, crunchy salmon roll. Again, outstanding. Everything that comes from the sushi Chefs is attractively presented. We like sitting nearby so we can watch them work. Service can be absent or too attentive. Plates cleared while our forks are still in the air. What will you get? Anyway, we like this spot very much and judging from the crowded dining room, other folks do too. read more

Perfectly functional Japanese. I've never eaten in the restaurant itself; I've done take out a handful of times. Ordering over the phone has never been an issue and they haven't gotten my order wrong yet. Sushi tastes about as fresh and clean tasting as every other suburban sushi restaurant I've been too. Kitchen entrees (yakisoba, katsu) are good, but I find the proteins (chicken breast, pork cutlet) to be overcooked. I think it's challenging to differentiate suburban sushi restaurants from one another. They all have essentially the same menu with the same decor. Tsuru doesn't do anything to stand out. read more

We had a big order for a work lunch. We got a bunch of lunch specials. I got the vegetarian tempura. You would think that would mean that they would substitute for an Avocado roll, which is less price, but they charge an extra for that. Also for mushroom soup substitute was also extra. I did sub the soup but was not very impressed with the taste. The tempura was good and the salad you can't go wrong with. Portion size was ok. I think everyone was satisfied with the meal but not super impressed. I asked for a pick up time and got there 10 minutes before and they literally made me wait outside for 15 minutes when they said they would be right out. Customer service can be better. Well to start with, the staff was really attentive and they took really care good of us(we were 8 of us).She started off by serving the tea which was good. Everybody ordered different combination of the lunch box, I ordered the one with salmon. The lunch box comes with soup. The lunch box contains white sticky rice, california rolls, salmon with brocolli.We also ordered fried shrimp tempura. The food was really good, the only glitch was that the salmon didn't seemed to be of very quality(catch). That is the only reason of giving them four stars. read more

Skip the Kaki Furai (fried oysters) tiny and flavorless and off putting in color (not golden). The agedashi tofu were nicely crisp, but the sauce was thin & lacking in flavor. I cannot recommend this place. Ordered for take out and maybe that was the problem. Tuna and salmon rolls tasted fishy and were falling apart due to poor rolling. Rice seemed undercooked or old? First time eating here - FYI BYOB - the fish quality was very impressive, which is the most important thing for a sushi restaurant. The group I was with ordered some food that didn't impress me but overall the sashimi was high quality. Found this place just by chance because I pulled into the wrong street and it was a good thing I did. This Japanese spot has a pretty impressive menu. Went with 10 co-worker for lunch on Thursday. Made reservation an hour before. Got there and saw the place was packed. They were able to seat us at one table at ground floor. It was a first time for all of us but everyone looked happy about the food. We ordered two rolls and edamame for appetizers.
