So part of me feels crazy saying this, but I'm certain they watered down their soy sauce. It's such an odd thing to do that I like to think it was a mistake? But it was thin and not nearly as salty as it would be. You could easy dunk fish in without any overpowering saltiness which would be insane with typical soy sauce Other than that. I have been at this restaurant several times, not by my choice, but because I went along with someone's choice. Personally I think the food is great and the environment is lively and fun. Service, it's another story. The service team work hard, very hard, but you can see that they work under stress, and it shows (true, I have been there only in busy times). Several occasions, the food arrived at wrong times. Example, apetizers arriving in the middle (after, in one occasion) the main meal; drinks ordered during the meal arriving after the bill had been paid; not having anything available for desert but not making an apologetic reference to it; and other, similar stories. Other than that I think they are great. When I go there, I just ignore the negatives and I have a good time. But, keep in mind, the negatives are there, I just don't want to see them. Went there with my family for an early Father's Day dinner and due to the early hour it was quiet. The wait staff was pleasant and the service prompt. I ordered beef teriyaki, medium and it arrived as ordered but looked a little fatty. It was extremely tough and difficult to chew. When the waitress asked how it was I explained, and her response was that because of the way it is cooked, after being removed from the heat it continues to cook and that makes it tough. The restaurant is well located on a busy street in Bernardsville. That is a good thing, especially since there are 2 entrances and the rear is close to a large municipal parking lot. We made the mistake of not making a reservation on a Friday evening because the place does get crowded with the regular diners. The woman greeter was very accomodating but did request we be finished by 7pm. The meal started with a hot hand towel to wipe your hands. This was lovely. My daughter ordered the Bento box with salmon and I order the Pilla roll. The Pilla roll was very tasty and fresh. The Bento box was very adequate and delicious. The green tea and water was consistently replenished even when I asked for the check and was signing the bill. Even though they needed the table for arriving guests, I felt that was a nice touch. Clean and simple design in this intimate restaurant which offers good food and friendly service. Tsuki is a low-key, quiet place to enjoy sushi, sashimi and classic Japanese dishes like udon soup, yakitori and katsu don (pork cutlet). The interior is all high-backed booths, plus a Sushi bar and a tatami room for groups. I'm here at least once a month for lunch when the choices are about $9-15. Japanese hot tea is included and was very good! Most lunches include a small bowl of a fine miso soup, followed by a small salad of lettuce, shaved carrot and cucumber with an excellent and not sweet sesame dressing. Afterwards they bring half an orange that's delicately carved into pieces. The #1 sushi lunch is a California roll plus six pieces of nigiri-sushi; i.e., sliced raw fish on vinegared rice. Considering the soup and salad that came with it, and the tea, I thought this was reasonable at $13. Another solid option at lunch is the nabeyaki udon noodle soup, loaded with fresh vegetables including cabbage, a whole egg, pieces of chicken AND two long tempura shrimp on the side, $12. The thinly sliced ginger that came with the rolls definitely was not the typical reddish color I've seen in other places. It tasted great to me with the same delicate crunch, so I don't know if it was just a different variety or if the one served here is more "natural." Very friendly and prompt service. Place was maybe 1/3 full when we visited, it was quiet and perfect for conversation. Dinner prices are a lot higher than lunch! But you knew that already. We went to Tsuki this week for dinner with family. I had called ahead to make sure the tofu teriyaki could be made fully vegan. The waitress was less certain that it was and also said the miso soup was not vegan. Another person, possibly an owner, asked the kitchen to make our miso soup and other dishes vegan. We appreciated the effort. We tried the eggplant with miso paste - very tasty. We would definitely order that again! We asked for the spicy broccoli to be made not so spicy. It was good but not exceptional. Of course, this is not how they normally make this dish. The miso soup and house salads were both quite satisfying. The salad was made with nice mixed greens and not iceberg (like so many other restaurants use for a side salad). It was a large portion for a side salad, too. The main dish we got was tofu teriyaki which came with rice (and soup and salad). Overall, a very good meal for us. We were happy to try a different restaurant, rather than the places we go regularly. Mom and dad seemed happy with their bento box and sushi dinners, too. I love this place! It is a great spot in Bernardsville for lunch. My favorite dish is the chicken terryaki. The service is quick and the food is great! I also order the beef yakitori for an appetizer, which is beef on a skewer with green peppers and onions. It is reasonably priced and is served piping hot. Street parking could be tough, so I would recommend to go early or late during lunch....12pm might be tough to find street parking. I like to sit in the front of the restaurant near the windows.
