    Zebra Roll and Summer Roll

A great date night in the center of Bernardsville. My boyfriend and I came for a nice date night in November. The inside needs a bit of an update but its pretty cozy. Don't forget to bring your own alcohol. We really really recommend the Okra Winfrey as an appetizer! Not too heavy. We wanted even more bites. The rolls were delicious! The Zebra roll has so much sauce so if you're a sauce lover, this one is for you. The Summer roll was really refreshing. They were both fresh. The service was impeccable and everyone was friendly!

Awesome sushi. The lemon roll was amazing. We also had the Philadelphia and spicy salmon rolls. They were also great. Small place nested downtown, quick service and free parking all around. Decent prices great food. Walked in for lunch and was fairly empty, they do close for a break I believe 3-5 or similar. Place is very clean and not to big. Giving it a 4 out of 5 because I personally didn't like the decor. Makes the place gloomy. Other than that solid sushi place!

    Pilla Roll

The restaurant is well located on a busy street in Bernardsville. That is a good thing, especially since there are 2 entrances and the rear is close to a large municipal parking lot. We made the mistake of not making a reservation on a Friday evening because the place does get crowded with the regular diners. The woman greeter was very accomodating but did request we be finished by 7pm. The meal started with a hot hand towel to wipe your hands. This was lovely. My daughter ordered the Bento box with salmon and I order the Pilla roll. The Pilla roll was very tasty and fresh. The Bento box was very adequate and delicious. The green tea and water was consistently replenished even when I asked for the check and was signing the bill. Even though they needed the table for arriving guests, I felt that was a nice touch. We will return but definitely make a reservation!

Small portion sizes. Quite expensive lunch ($19 bento box with literally only chicken, rice and sashimi), Udon noodles were unflavored.

Pros: plenty of parking, AC was comfortable even during a heat wave, service wasn't rushed. The place was quiet. Cons: the sushi was average but not amazing. I had the tuna belly appetizer with a friend. It was so unimpressive, I barely remember it. I ordered a bento box. It was standard but the chicken was very bland. The sauce didn't add much flavor at all. It's hard to mess up tempura so that was fine. The California roll was a half notch above supermarket. And the shumai tasted a bit fishy. Not terrible but just ok. Keep in mind the others seemed to enjoy the place immensely. The prices were fair. For a neighborhood spot geared at takeout it's fine. If you're looking for a dining experience, keep looking.

Very generous portions for the shrimp, and the chicken, and veggie alike. Seasoned and flavorful, crispy and delicious with the dipping sauce. I also really like the shumai, the steamed shrimp in a delicate wrap. Its soft without being mushy. The texture is just right. The gyoza is fine, not remarkable. The roast duck spring roll is also interesting, very crispy and mine was served with a pretty spicy sauce that I enjoyed. The sushi is fine, and the Magic Roll is a standout - lobster salad with mango whitefish with tempura flakes. Very good. I recommend the Crispy rock shrimp as well. The staff is friendly. Overall, really good food, definitely get any one of the tempura dishes and some shumai.

The bad news is they lost points due to making us wait almost an hour for a small order -the staff is very nice but they appeared to be filling a ton of Grubhub orders before us and the place was half empty. It would've been nice if they gave us a free soup or something to apologize for the long wait but c'est lavie. Other issue - the main one- is their prices are astronomical for a hole in the wall joint in Morristown. As high as any of the Manhattan glam spots, i.e. Soho, Madison Ave, Columbus Circle, etc. Where else do you pay $13 for a salmon roll? 90% of places charge around $7-8 per, so you're looking at a very steep bill. Again, the fish is great but be prepared to spend hi end prices for a hole in the wall joint.

In a nutshell, they prioritized catering-size take-out orders over seated customers, and tried to pad the bill after we handed our credit card. We had a 6PM reservation for 2 and we were the only people in the restaurant. We had a 7PM business call scheduled, and being the only seated customers, assumed we were good on time. A table of 3 and table of 2 walked in after we were seated and placed our order. We merely ordered 2 rolls, each and 1 order of salmon sashimi. Our meal took more than 1.25 hours to be served, because the restaurant was pumping out To-Go orders. Not small To-Go orders, but large round catering trays of sushi and specialty rolls! Our meal was served in "dribs & drabs," not all at once as we usually experienced here. One order of sashimi, wait 10 minutes, then one roll, wait 15 mins, then one more roll... still waiting for two more rolls. The rolls were loose... not like we were used to. Something changed at Asahi. After waiting another 25 minutes, we told our waitress that we preferred our entire order served all at once. Her reply was "it's out of my control how it comes out," with a shoulder shrug. We asked for the manager, and complained that Asahi is making its seated customers wait over To-Go orders. The manager said sorry & tried to give us free dessert. We didn't eat it and we told her we were now late for a business call, because it took an hour and a half for 4 rolls and an order of salmon sashimi. To make matters worse, they overcharged us. Our bill was approximately $88. and when the waitress took we card and ran it, the waitress added a $20. speciality roll that we didn't order or have, increasing the bill to $113. The manager had to fix that, which delayed us further. The food and service were great 3 times prior back in 2025, but this experience was so bad, we will never be back.
