First let me say that the options in Ridgecrest are limited. You aren't going to find the best Mexican food in the world here, but the Mexican restaurants are a better bet on average. But you don't want Mexican food, so what to do? Well, the ambiance and service here are fine. The food is fine. You aren't going to leave here feeling like it was a terrible experience, but you aren't going to leave trying to plan your next trip back either. My burger was slightly overcooked and slightly under seasoned. The fries were fine. The toppings were fresh. My wife's salad was mostly iceberg lettuce and a reasonable amount of over cooked chicken. Our server was fine if a little inattentive. The decor is fine. You know you're in a steakhouse-esque establishment that isn't in its hey day. But things are clean enough. I'm sure I'll be back the next time I come to Ridgecrest. Mostly because a restaurant that is 'fine' is about as good as I've found here. read more

After 11 hours straight on the road, I was looking for a blue-collar place to get a balanced meal. Ale's steakhouse was the one I chose. No previous experience with this place, but lots of experience with Ridgecrest-NWC China Lake. I have been coming here since 1979. Yeah, damn long time. Back in those days, we would all go out to Inyokern for a great meal at Indian Wells Lodge. It was a little bit of a drive out of town, but well worth it. This time I knew I would be too tired to do that, but next time, for sure. So, what has changed in Ridgecest over the past 44 years? Not much, except more escapees from the LA Metro area. Same dusty, wind blown, hot as hell location in the high desert. Same salt of the earth residents and former military families just trying to survive. That is the attraction of this area. Plenty of No-BS people, unlike the cesspool of LA and Orange Counties. Refreshing to spend time around these unpretentious folks. You can see the meal in the pics. Jealous? You should be. I topped it off with a Margarita for dessert. Angelberto was my server, and he was welcomed by many other regulars tonight. Eat your hearts out, people. Hello, I was told by a friend to try the Tri-Tip steak plate and I'm going to tell you that it was hands down the best steak ever served in my little hometown's restaurant at Ale's. If you ever get to meet Ale make sure you do, she's a very hard worker. I've first seen her starting out as a server taking orders. Now she runs two restaurants. First off I tried to order to go because I'm staying next door at the hotel and just got off work. Wanted to relax and have some dinner. No answer... three times. So I walk over and see one table in the whole dining area on the right and one lady at the register. I wait another 5 minutes to get seated. Once I got seated I received my drink right away and was ready to order. Then I proceeded to wait another 10 minute while all 4 waitstaff stands around talking and helping the other table with people at it. After that I decide to go pay for my lemonade and find another place to eat. Your service is terrible and it seems like your waitstaff doesn't like making money. What a pity they don't train their staff in customer service. Wish I could leave a review about the food but unfortunately never got a chance to order. read more

Went on a Saturday afternoon. Service was somewhat slow. Seemed like they had more customers then they are used to or just short staffed as most places are. There were about four tables eating, and when we entered we were in a queue of three. When we sat down, we noticed four un-bussed tables. Didn't take long to get our food once ordered. Food was delicious. I had steak tips and potato salad, and my partner had the molcajete trio. His was steaming hot as it arrived to the table! I might go back, food was worth it, decor-not so much-there were greasy fingerprints on the window. I saw a documentary about tacos. In the documentary they showed tacos from all over the western hemisphere. Out of all the tacos they showed; tacos de Suadero looked better than all the others put together. First they make a stew with water, chorizo sausages, lots of seasonings, and some other items, and then add the beef and simmer it. They'd dip corn tortillas into the soup and then fry them on the pan. Chop up the beef, and put it into the taco. I have never had the opportunity to try tacos de Suadero, and could only find one restaurant in Long Beach that had them. Ale's has their own version called Molcajete' triple. They have a mild red sauce, but I went for the extra spicy green sauce which most people cannot handle. My mouth had razor blades in it and I was sweating, just like street tamales in Compton. It comes in a volcanic rock mortar with three legs. Everything is sizzling for 5 minutes when it is placed on your table. It has tri-tip, a shrimp bamboo scewer, and chicken strips. There is a sausage, melted queso fresca, and the flavor is thee most unique Mexican dish I have ever had in my entire life and I was born in East L.A. and retired from South Central. Nothing in 60 years has compared to the flavor of this. It's the essence of Mexico. That's what I called Beluga Caviar.... "The essence of the sea". I absolutely love this dish. The flavors and textures are amazing! The Only thing I can complain about is that they serve it with rice pillaf .......SERIOUSLY?........What are you thinking? Make some frijoles and Spanish rice. So I ordered an avocado to go with it to substitute for the missing refried beans and Spanish rice. They should also have guacamole on their menu. For dessert, because my mouth was on fire, I had their chocolate cake. No....this was not your typical chocolate cake with that disgusting butter cream sugar icing on it. This was like a chocolate truffle fudge cake with whipped cream and drizzled with more fudge. If you want to get your chocolate on and neutralize that chili burn, then this cake will hit the spot and make your sweet tooth a happy camper, I had to order a glass of milk to wash down that chocolate cake. I highly...very higly, recommend this dish! I wouid have given them 5 stars; but they blew it with that stupid rice plllaf. Get some frijoles con Spanish rice and I will give you 5 stars. Rice pillaf? SERIOUSLY??????????? That's as idiotic as serving frijoles with Lasagna? Or mustard on a pizza? What were you thinking? Normal reasonable people don't do things like that. You have something so perfect and you blew it with rice pillaf. Fusion food is for non-connoisseurs. It is never as good as the traditional recipes. read more

The burgers were sooooo big and juicy!! Everything was fresh. I ordered the Memphis BBQ burger and my husband had the regular cheeseburger. Cooked to our liking, so delicious. Fast and friendly. We were staying at the Heritage Inn after 8 hours of driving, so my hubby went to go pick it up as a TO GO order and he said the place was packed, so it must be great. Definitely found our GO TO place when staying in Ridgecrest. Thank you Ale's Steakhouse and Jesus for such great food and service. Oh yes, we also ordered some of those huge meaty Buffalo Wings, but we were so full from the burgers, we ended up packing them in our ice chest and eating them the next day. They have cut portion sizes, only have Clam Chowder on Friday night and one waiter for six tables wasn't doable. The steak was tough and the salad a sad mix of limp greens. One of the best rib eye I've had in a while. Top 3 for sure and I love my steaks. I met the owner, who was working the bar while her bartender was out for vacation, seeing her hustle, and manage at the same time, has earned my respect not that she needed. I heard the spot been around 10 years, she's doing something right. It's a super chill steak house, not one of those bougie style ones where you gotta dress nice or anything like that so don't expect that type of restaurant. Excellent food and best service I've experienced at a restaurant in years! This place is locally owned, delicious and super friendly environment. I came here at reccomendation of our hotel front desk staff. So glad I asked them because I never would have found it on my own. After driving all day and being so tired it was great to find such a friendly spot.They had kids meals and I found all of the prices to be reasonable especially for the portion size. When my kid spilled his drink, the waiter was so nice about it. I really appreciated his kindness at an embarrassing moment for a tired mom! First meal while visiting was much better than expected. I had the tilapia and I'm so pleased I got the full meal rather than the senior portion. I wasn't at all hungry but ate it all. Not a bad little steakhouse. I will say the bar area is rather small, but thats not big of a deal. I was able to get a seat at the bar right in front of a TV to watch some baseball while I ate. I ordered the ribeye steak with sautéed mushrooms and a baked potatoe. I like my meat medium rare, but I always order medium just cause most places can't seem to nail that perfect medium. No major fault to them as they may have a new cook or gotten busy preforming another task. Reason it's not a 5 star is the seasoning for the steak was just not enough. Really disappointed. Got out from Death Valley and it was dinner time so we yelped a steakhouse so here we are. Restrooms are BOTH out of service....and the waiters don't know how long it will take. So we had to use the wet wipes for washing the hands... and going to MC next door for the restroom. Service was slow even there were few ppl in the restaurant. Visited Ale's while visiting Ridgecrest. It is conveniently located for this part of town. The food was good. The timing was poor and brought out our 3 meals one at a time making the rest of us hungrily wait. Again, the food was good. The steak was cooked as ordered. The fish was delicious and enjoyed. Drinks were brought promptly. Then there was the service... We were unfortunately served by Luz. Her effort was minimal and her attitude was abundant. She did nothing to refill drinks or offer to get additional drinks. We were in the mood for dessert that she never asked for or offered us options. When she was asked questions about the check she became defensive and short. Her service killed what would have been a solid 4 star review. I give two stars for food and no stars for service. Ale's has a nice assortment of food in a down-to-Earth, homey setting. With a good selection of beef, chicken, and seafood options, you're sure to find something you like (if you're a meat-eater, that is). They also have a decent selection of cocktails and beers, but definitely ask about the price of the bottles as they are not listed and just might surprise you (my bottle of orange blossom was $18, though it was a pint). For my entrée, I had the cordon bleu royal with fresh cut veggies and red skinned potato mash. The cordon bleu was very good with a rich, cheesy, creamy filling and a nice crispy breading. I personally didn't care for the mayo-like royal sauce as it was pretty thick and seemed to conflict with the flavor and texture of the cordon bleu. The veggies were okay but could've done with more seasoning and the potatoes were really good (just note that they came loaded with cheese and bacon without requesting it). My friends had the spicy chicken wings and said they were really crispy and delicious. Not being a big fan of spicy, I took their word for it :) Griselda was our server and she took great care of us. She kept our drinks full, checked in regularly and had a great personality. The food and service were both great and would definitely recommend. 4 stars. read more

It's the second time in two visits to Ridgecrest that I have gone to Ale's and each of the two times I have to admit that I got steak! According to a couple of sources it's the number one ratted steak joint in Ridgecrest and having also tried the "other options" I must agree it is the best of the few (not a ton of options) that I have indeed tried in my three (not just two) visits to town. In each of my two occasions in town when I went to Ale's the staff was exceptionally nice and very attentive. You might ask me; then why not a 5 Star review? Well part of it is the decor and part is overall good quality. Yes it was all very good but for me a 5 Star has got to rival the top of the line places, which, in my opinion it just does not stack up CLEARLY while in Ridgecrest and looking for the best steak in town, I strongly suggest you give Ale's a spin. This was our go-to for a while until I had bad lobster. It smelled and tasted of urine. When we brought it to the attention of the waitress she acted as if it was no big deal. Until this time we looked forward to the seafood boils. We will no longer be purchasing them. I am truly disappointed with the lack of concern shown by this establishment. We found this place with reasonable prices on our way to Death Valley. (In the middle of nowhere as well) We loved steak,so we stopped. The waiters and waitresses were very friendly, which is always brings joy to me and other customers. The portions were huge, and meat was very high quality. The restaurant is pretty big as well. I think we're finally done with Ale's Steakhouse. The service has always been a little hit or miss, but tonight we totally felt like they didn't care if we were there or not. Once we gave our order, we didn't see our waitress until after we had finished and only because she saw my husband looking around, despite the fact that our drinks had been empty and sitting at the edge of the table for 3/4 of the meal. Our food was delivered by someone else, and when the waitress asked us if we wanted a box, it was also delivered by someone else. They added some kind of "non-cash charge" to our ticket, even though they didn't know how we were paying yet. When we went up to pay, the same waitress took the $100 bill and made no effort to give us change, assuming she was going to get the entire thing. Even if we had planned to do so, which we did, she should not have assumed. As for the food, the ribeye was tough (we ordered medium rare); we get better ribeye at Schooners. Disappointing from one of the few places in town where one should expect quality, especially at the prices we paid. read more
