When you're planning your big day, communication is everything. Creativeness. On the day of, Johanna provided no real creative direction and we were left to come up with different poses and photo ops. In fact, there were several special moments I wanted photographed that she either missed or failed to capture. Actual content received. Johanna was present at our reception for over 5 hours and there is maybe ONE decent photo while we are all seated at dinner. I expected to see photos of every table and especially several photos from the table me and my husband sat at. Instead, there's about three photos of me and my husband at our table. There isn't even one photo of the entire table with the bride and groom's parents. Moving onto the dancing, there are also minimal photos. I danced for five hours straight and the content received shows me in maybe 10 photos with friends and guests. In fact, I danced for an entire song with my husband's sister and there isn't ONE photo to reflect it. Again, everyone needs to start somewhere and Johanna and Q. seem to be very nice but I, unfortunately, am disappointed with the photos of my wedding reception. ALSO, no sneak peek was provided. I hired a photographer for my wedding ceremony that was on a different day and she provided us with a sneak peek within 3 days. Matt first met the Costas when they photographed his best friend's wedding in Santa Barbara in 2008, and he remembered them when we started looking for photographers. His friends had hired the Costas' assistant, who cost considerably less, but when she quit, the Costas subbed in for her without any problems or raises in price. They took beautiful photos--we looked at them closely before making our decision. Another of Matt's friends from high school also ended up hiring the Costas after that wedding. When we hired our wedding planner, Ariel Yve (who is wonderful), she highly recommended the Costas. She said they did wonderful work for a fair price, and that they had photographed her wedding as well. We set up an interview with Michael and that was that. Everything had aligned. Michael took our engagement photos, and we got both Anna and Michael to shoot our wedding. The engagement photos were nice and awkward, but they turned out well, and they helped us get comfortable with Michael and his cameras. Michael and Anna are great people, very friendly and professional. They knew how to corral everyone for portraits, and to help me and Matt relax in front of the camera. I was advised before selecting wedding photographers that personality matters a lot--you probably spend more time with your photographers than with your closest friends and family on your wedding day. We felt at ease with the Costas. We took a million pictures on the wedding day, with Michael and Anna working hard from morning until well into the night. They captured everything, and our pictures came out beautifully. Our package came with full sets of both digital images and 4 x 6 prints in a custom box, as well as an album, two parent albums, and credit for larger prints of our choosing. It took us a while to get some of these things, but most of that was on our end. It's hard to pick your favorite pictures from an event as big and well covered as your own wedding. There were some problems with the website, but the Costas actually comped us extra prints to make up for them. All in all, great to work with. We went to another wedding in March, and were surprised to hear our names called out while we munched on hors d'oeuvres on a Pacific Palisades patio. We looked up and saw Anna Costa with her camera in hand. The couple, who had neither been to our wedding nor sought our advice, had hired our wedding photographers. I think the takeaway of this review is that everyone between L.A. and Santa Barbara is hiring the Costas, and that we all end up pretty pleased with that decision. If you're planning a wedding in Southern California, they should certainly be on your radar.
