This place cuts corners to make sure the money ends up in their pocket. Bad work, and even worse customers service. Also, their best method of addressing problems is to avoid returning phone calls, emails, etc. Try to avoid AJ's at all costs. They don't put the customer first. I hired A J's Landscaping to remove several bushes in our yard, as well as plant new ones. They also trimmed our pine trees, attached drip lines to the new plants, and spread mulch. This one is written by my better half.... We have worked hard to save just over $20K to invest in landscaping my backyard to turn it into an oasis; a real retreat. In reviewing AJ's Landscaping website I saw incredible photos of their work. They even advertise, "No job is ever too small for AJ's Landscaping & Design. Each job is customized to meet your needs and budget." My excitement was soon crushed as Damon Peabody (Director of Sales) ( REALLY? how sad) arrived late for the appointment (over two hours) and was condescending and disrespectful to me. As we surveyed my backyard he began to try and talk me out of the job because there were so many things my yard needed that my job, I guess, was "too small" for him to work on. He began to tell me if AJ's don't do the entire job, then the consequences would be that I would take them to court and we would get into an expensive legal battle. What?! I couldn't believe what he was saying. He doesn't know me! When I told him I found his comments offensive about me suing them, he did apologize, but the damage was done. I guess he's not used to us working class folks who scrimp and save to finally think we can put our dream into reality. So if you have $100K to throw toward landscaping, and enjoy having someone demeaning to work with, call AJs and request Damon. read more

I am very disappointed with our brief experience with AJs Landscaping & Design. I caution everyone from using this outfit unless your budget is quite significant and don't mind overpaying for the scope! The Pros (and only reason we did not give it a 1 star rating): their design idea for our backyard was really nice! On paper it looked amazing, but please go to Cons! Cons: AJs was the only company (out of 4 bidders) that requested a deposit to develop a design and cost proposal. As they were the first ones we contacted we gave in and paid the despots. Aj is a smooth talker and had us convinced!. With the impressions that they would be reasonable on the pricing of our wants, we paid this deposit! After paying the deposit, we waited nearly a month before getting a preview of our design and proposal. The PROPOSAL WAS $50k for very simple additions; we nearly fell off our seats! After requesting some changes to reach near a reasonable budget, they came down to $28k; this would have been a major sacrifice on our wants! And still over our budget! After going out for bids, we saw that hard scalping quote (Patio extension, kitchen, fire place) was near 40% greater then the competition. Their landscaping was nearly double the cost of the competition and the trees they were offering were also much smaller (30 gallon vs 60!). After discussing the large price gaps with AJs peoples, there response was that the deposit was none refundable. Please note this was $800, for a sketch that would take about 1-2 hrs and a bid that would be about the same, the sketch was a plan view, nothing special like a 3D rendering! This in my opinion is the cost of doing business, and not to the client. We feel taken advantage off, and refuse to use a contractor/design company that gouges their clients. Unless you have a ton of money your ok with spending, I don't recommend this group. Will give out business to a different contractor! read more

I get so many compliments from visitors on his updated design.. the service was impeccable.. The inventory that was originally ordered was not correctly delivered and our invoice was incorrect. Had I not closely evaluated, we would have been overbilled. I don't think I should have to monitor the invoice as closely as I did, yet had I not, the bill was $1000 greater than the services actually delivered. They did quickly address the invoice after I brought to their attention. I do have some concerns about the zoysia grass being contaminated with excessive weeds prior to installation that required 1/2 of the grass to be removed and replaced. read more

Hired them for our pool and landscape. Excellent design and support! After two years of installation, our pool circuit is acting up. Called AJ Friday and they sent someone out fixed it the very next Monday! Now that's customer service and how they guarantee their workmanship! I am impressed not only by their design but most of all how they value their customers and help them even after the project. Will definately hire them again for any of our future projects! read more

I had AJ's design our backyard a couple of years ago. From plant quality to workmanship, they did a horrible job, including choosing and advising me on the wrong kind of bamboo. Regardless, we lived with the design for the past 2 years and have maintained it ourselves or used other companies, not wanting to deal with the horrible customer service at AJ's again. That said, a key element of the design- tarp laid under gravel - started to come up and was not holding up as promised. I called AJ's to see if they would stand by their work, and I was surprised to find out that "AJ" owned the company, and would come by to see the problem. (Where was he when the original work was being done?!). AJ came to look at the problem - but blamed our other companies and our dogs - neither of which are the case for the tarp not holding up, as my husband pointed out to him. Throughout the discussion, AJ refused to make it right or have his team fix the work (though he was happy to charge us to redo it...). AJ became increasingly heated during the conversation and his statements became inconsistent-- telling me that the work should have lasted 3-5 years but that it had only been 2 years. When I pointed this out, he yelled at me not to put words in his mouth. It was shocking. We ultimately asked him to leave, and got no help from the company. This business does not do Houston proud. There are so many other companies that are willing to stand by their work and treat their customers respectfully. This is not one. read more

I have to say that my experience with AJ's Landscaping was nothing but great! I met with a young landscape architect about a year ago. I had interviewed other landscape companies but felt most comfortable with him. Instead of just spurting out ideas, he listened to what I was wanting to get accomplished. In the past when I had design work done, It was almost as if they did not listed to a word I had to say. A couple of weeks later we met to review his ideas, and was completely blown away by the design and professionalism. I signed a contract shortly after and watched their team transform our yard. AJ's has been maintaining our landscaping for over a year. They are reliable, conscientious and reasonable. I receive an email reminding me of their upcoming visit and I can reply with any concerns or focus areas. They also text me when they are on their way so that I can have our dogs out of the way. Upon completion of their work they leave us a detailed report of what they have completed as well as any concerns. They also leave everything neat and beautiful! They quickly respond to my requests in a prompt and courteous manner. I have worked with many landscaping companies over the past 15 years in the Houston area and they are by far the absolute best! I have never so disappointed in the whole process in my entire life! THIS IS THE THIRD POOL THAT WE HAVE BUILT. They over promise and under deliver on as levels. They forgot to put a step to get into our hot tub which had to be added later , they forgot 2 pencil spray jets that we paid for but were left out of the contract, they were supposed to fix a drainage problem in the yard but have only managed to make it worse and we have been told since August that the job will be finished next week. If you still feel the need to go with them make sure you put a completion date in the contract and the everything is in writing because they have a way of forgetting things. One of their trucks pulling a trailer, full of landscaping material without tarp down 1-10; had material fly off the trailer and damaged my windshield. I immediately contacted AJ's and spoke with a supervisor. I was assured that I would get a returned call, but after 3 hours I called and spoke with the same person. No apologies for not calling and basically told me to me file with my insurance company. The impression I have after this experience, is that don't care about my damage from their vehicle and they did not care that their vehicle was traveling down an interstate without a tarp to safely secure the materials. I so wish I had read these reviews before hiring AJ's. I had many of the same negative experiences up front with the charges for a plan and the high prices, but was excited about working with the company so moved forward. The installation was problematic. First, they didn't follow the plan and so they had to replant several areas several times. But probably the biggest disappointment was the corners they cut planting. They did not amend the soil as promised, they only put some top soil on top of compacted gumbo. So when they dug in the plants, the roots had nowhere to go. They charged me for adjustments to the irrigation system, but within weeks several plants died due to a lack of water. Most of the plants started failing within a few months due to the shoddy planting - roots exposed, etc. A year and a half later, we have lost well over half of what they planted. You may get a better outcome if you use the company for maintenance, but that was exorbitant so ask ahead of time for an estimate. What a waste of money. read more

This past summer I asked for a refresher course of action since the shrubs etc were growing out of control. AJ's has been maintaining our lawn and gardens for over a year now. They are very reliable and do a great job. What I like best is that they send me an email the day before they come every week so that I can let them know about any concerns. I might tell them that weeds or cropping up in the lawn or I saw bugs on the magnolia. When I do have a concern, it's taken care of the next day. Yes, they're that responsive, which I have found to be a rare quality in the landscaping maintenance world. Good communication, with customers and within their organization. Very nice people, too. Any negatives? Well, I have three big dogs, so I wish they cleaned up dog poo! But that's about it. I've worked with several of the large landscaping companies in town and AJ's is the best in my opinion. I recommend them. read more

We have spent over $100,000 with AJ on 3 major landscaping projects with the first 10 years ago for complete redo of front, side yard and courtyard. The second was 7 years ago with landscaping our back yard, complete redo of pool, flagstone accents, paver patio and arbor. We just finished our last project by AJ which was a new colored, stamped and saw cut driveway. We also redid our patio and front walk with quartzite tile and the stone workmanship was superb. I might mention that our landscape architect at AJ's, Jared, developed an absolutely great design for each of these projects. AJ's is certainly not cheap but you get what you pay for and they are worth every penny. If you think this is a phony review, ask AJ for my address and do a drive by. read more

Three years ago AJ landscaped my front yard and although I did the upkeep, and now it looks horrible. The landscaper who did the work left AJs but AJ who came out did a quick assessment and added a few revisions to the original drawing and charged me 500 dollars. Next he sent an intern (fresh out of college, no real experience) to review the drawing with me- she said he had a business meeting (aren't I business?) . It is clear AJ doesn't really care about the private homeowner who lives on a medium size lot. He takes his customers very seriously. read more

I have a large back yard which could have been a very good sized job for AJ's Landscaping. I called the company and one of their representatives arrived at my home a week later. I spoke with him about what I wanted to do and asked for his opinions regarding a pool install. When he left he promised that he would call me back with an estimate and a preliminary description of the work he recommended. He never called back. Several months later I called AJ's once again and explained that I had never received a return call from my representative. I assumed that if they were a good company they would apologize and proceed with the job. Later that week, the same rep came out and we had a repeat performance. He took measurements, we spoke about design, and we discussed options. Once again he said he would have an estimate and a description of the scope of work within a week. I too, had a very negative experience with this company (AJ's Landscaping). I wish I could remember the gentleman's name that came to look at our project. He was very negative and unfriendly. We wanted to completely re-design landscaping around our pool, and a large backyard. I also told him that we will need to refinish inside of our 10 year old pool, and considering upgrading large patio ( read $$$). He first mentioned that he can just tell me some ideas of landscaping, I specifically told him I'm not interested in doing anything myself, or getting anything for free. I wanted to pay for complete design that we can review, plan and have it done. I was very clear on that. NEVER heard back from him, or the company.
