Chicken pesto sandwich was burned so much. I could not taste anything except charcoal and maybe some veggies. I was starving and did my best to eat enough but still had to rip off whole sections of blackened, burned bread before giving up and throwing away half of this $9 sandwich of total regret. The amount of chicken was generous but was still tasting like charcoal. Barely any pesto, but maybe I could not taste it from the overwhelming taste of charcoal. If I had eaten it while I was still there, I'd have returned it and ask for my money back. I understand it is during the COVID 19 pandemic but this is unacceptable. I also waited quite a long time, and the two men acted like it would normally take a long time, even though there were no other customers ordering food or meat. I guess now I know why. I didn't want to stress them out by watching them so I wandered the store and had enough time to wait in line twice to buy some candy and cookies in desperation. After all that, it still wasn't ready, and I had to wait some more. I also wonder why they make this with hamburger buns. I was expecting Italian bread for something named chicken pesto sandwich. Especially since they even sell it in the store. During my wandering of the store, I did not see anything in particular that stood out and don't know why there are so many reviews glorifying it. There was a whole aisle dedicated to alcohol. To be honest, I'd rather just drive an hour to San Jose and do my international shopping there. I guess it is a good option for convenience if you are willing to pay the incredibly high prices (a package of overly sweet cookies is almost $9). I also bought an almond nougat for $0.30 that tasted stale. I did notice they had some baklava, but I won't take any more chances in being disappointed. In the future, I will be sticking to the gas/car wash and won't bother with any of the food or snacks. read more

Holy cow, I had lunch at a gas station....and LOVED it! What a little gem this place is: get gas, have your car washed, buy local organic produce & halal meat (kosher in Islam). Order a quick meal from the deli with everything from burgers to shawerma's & fresh baked bread. AJ's also has a great selection of wine and beer (no hard stuff) plus some pretty nifty wine gift items - need a hostess gift in a hurry? AJ's is the place to stop. We sat outside in the patio area and enjoyed falafel plate lunches in the sunshine, watching the cars go by on Soquel Drive. We are definitely going back to AJ's. Who knew? read more

I have mixed feelings about AJ's Market. It is a market attached to a gas station right off the freeway in Soquel, so its perfect if you are on a road trip and want to fill up the car with gas and eat something other than typical gas station food. I have come here multiple times and have had a different experience each time. I love how they have fresh produce, Gizditch pies, Marianne's ice cream, local cheeses, breads and a nice little restaurant. At the restaurant, the onion rings are amazing, but the burgers are very inconsistent. One time, I ordered a burger here and asked for it well done. It came out very pink in the middle. Unfortunately, I ordered it to go and was already home by the time I cut into it. The next time I stopped by, I was craving a burger and decided to chance it and it was perfect, so I guess it just depends on which chef you get working the kitchens. Another time, I bought a loaf of Aldo's bread and took it home. I opened it up and it had mold growing on it. It was pretty gross! I took it back and they gave me a full refund, which was very nice. Every other time I come here I have had amazing customer service and the produce and fruits are usually very fresh. read more

This place is literally right around the corner from me. Our kids have made this their neighborhood trek for as long as I would let them out of my sight (and they were pretty young when I first started letting them explore, on city streets, in Chicago no less). So needless to say we have seen the great transformation for a little gas store convenience market to what they are today. And that is a long list: First off, gas is a little more expensive than down the street at the QuikStop but this is ever so convenient. Then you have typical fare like chips, cookies, candy, lotto, etc. An amazing wine and beer collection, even elusive hard cider, which makes the hubby happy. A full blown produce market, which means I can now ask the kids to run up the corner and grab be a bell pepper, or onion, or parsley (and they can walk the dog at the same time). Next time you see a cute little corgi out front, say hi to Roscoe. A pretty decent pantry seletion of canned and boxed goods you could easily build a meal or a great beach picnic from. They also have some great hard to find middle eastern ingredients and awesome ice cream for those late night cravings. And my kids personal favorite the grill. My teenage son swears they make a mean hamburger and he would know cause he buys one at least once a week. Everyone who works there is super nice, of course I think they love us since we have been coming there FOREVER. read more

This place is a little hidden gem! The owners are great, and the customer service is always pleasant. They have a good assortment of groceries and household items. I love this little market has the best burgers in town and Affordable most little markets are expensive this great little family market is just perfect for my family I have children with disabilities and they're always able to come in and feel calm and welcomed. They make the best baklava my children and I get at least 3 to 4 of them a week. Burgers, fries everything we love so much we even quit going to Betty's burgers because a J's Market was more affordable and tasted to us better. They have great buns and bread. Produce is even sometimes cheaper then a large grocery store. With covid fears I feel more comfortable running into a tiny market and only being exposed to a small amount of people then going into a large market and being exposed to many. I really like the selection but the staff is very unwelcoming. You definitely don't feel comfortable in the store as the all white staff watches every move. AJ's Market is an excellent spot for fuel, fresh produce, deli, household items. You name it--they've got it. It is relatively expensive for some common items, but that's how it goes at a small neighborhood market in this town. If you want cheaper, drive a mile to Safeway. I love their bulk food sections and they have Pacific Coffee Roasting Co. Coffee! Recently got a vegetarian breakfast burrito...it was excellently prepared. Even recently met THE AJ and he was so kind. He was working the register and it was cool to see him behind the counter working and experiencing customers. The reason that I could never give AJ's a 5 star review is the car wash! Don't do it! It scratched my old car and I've heard so many different friends talk about it and not actually cleaning their car. Really like this hidden gem market, they have everything from a nice Marianne's ice cream selection, to everything a little grocery store would have. We love their meats and their food, but don't expect the people who answer the phone to know what's on the menu they post online. I had to talk to several people to explain what I wanted (one was a burger just meat and bun, nothing else, per a child's request), only to get there and they didn't know what I wanted (everything was on the burger). I'm so lucky to have Aj's right down the street from me. They have a little bit of everything. Some things are a little pricier than at the grocery store, but when it's close and convenient, it's more than worth it. The staff is friendly. They offer fresh produce, ethnic foods and spices, many options for a quick "to-go" lunch, specialty beers and wine, coffee, and their meat deli is superb. I was very grateful for this gas station considering that the previous one we stopped at had every nozzle marked "out of order" and the sign in the window showed OPEN. And If you said I would be ordering food from the grille at a gas station, I'd say you were nuts or taking some questionable "medication". But, as you have it, a trusted friend raved about the food here. I had a burger and fries and it was good. I saw a greek salad with grilled salmon and that was impressive. For a gas station mini-market, this place is the coolest. Ever. It has an interesting variety of all things food and drink, including a wonderful produce and meat case with Halal meat (at least I think it's still halal?). They also carry Marianne's ice cream and an aisle of incense - did I already say they carry everything? I go to AJ's regularly for lunch, usually for a gyro wrap, a burger, or a pastrami sandwich, because not only are they delicious, but they are relatively quick when you call it in ahead, and the price is always reasonable. Be warned though, sometimes it can take longer than others, they DO get crazy busy during prime lunch and dinner hour! This place is a great example of why I love Santa Cruz County. They have turned a Chevron gas station into a miniature whole foods without the outlandish prices. This market features a great selection of locally sourced products, organic produce, craft beer, and an amazing deli. I come here as often as I can for two very different reasons. The first being the Chicken Schwarma Wrap. It is the best I have had anywhere, ever. The 2nd reason is the beer selection.
