Great selection. Improving all the time. Lots of in house specials and the best local sausage. I'd love to see a bit of cold cuts and such like turkey and ham. Lots of great sales and regular staff who learn your tastes and help you out with recipes and such. Would be cool to see some pasture raised variety and organic too. Variety is cool. Oh and they have great marinades and seasonings. Can't wait to see what future improvements they make as I notice they're upgrading equipment. Yay! read more

This was our final stop before camping at Big Basin and we came in on my birthday for a few more snacks and supplies. Realizing we'd forgotten our stove, we were happy to buy propane ($5.99) to contribute to someone else's stove. We also bought some rolls ($4.19), a bunch of celery ($0.99) that ended up being almost inedible (very bitter and soft), 2L Diet DrPepper ($2.19), bbq sauce ($2.39), jar of cherry peppers $1.99, a little ice ($1.89), a $20 tri-tip, and a bottle of chilled Barefoot champagne ($7.99). We stood in one line and the woman in front of us had accidentally broken the lid of her dish soap. A big soapy mess was on the floor and I stepped in it. The cashier slowly turned to put the lid back on, then walked away to do who knows what? I found another employee walking by and alerted them to the hazard. Seriously, a big pile of soapy mess on the floor - that's dangerous! At this point since cashier #1 hadn't returned, we switched to Ashlee's checkstand where she was a little more friendly and worked more efficiently than the other woman. As she rang up our items she spoke with another female employee with a snakebite piercing, who literally just stood there and chatted instead of bagging the items. So I bagged up all of our purchases while they hung out and we left feeling generally confused that there was no manager around to take note of everything going on. PS - I'm 34 and my husband's 32 - we certainly don't look 21 but most grocery stores have pretty strict policies about ID-ing people purchasing alcohol - no matter how old they look. You'd think a smaller store like this would especially care; but we weren't ID-ed. read more

Be aware of foul Meats! We stopped in for the first time yesterday and bought a variety of marinated chicken wings to take home and cook up. The first thing I noticed upon opening the package is how slimy the chicken wings were. It was tough to tell if the chicken wings were spoiled because all you could smell was the marinade and rubs. Needless to say we should have listened to our gut feeling because FOOD POISONING all night has been a horrid and painful experience. The manager I spoke to about this was very kind and understanding and said he would make sure that chicken wings were pulled so that no one else would get sick. Their bbq and smoked meats section is sooo good! Only place around you could get proper Brisket. Deli sandwiches are nice and fresh as well. It's about the only place around SLV where I buy meat- they're meat counter is fresh and well stocked, well priced. Also, homemade sausages!! Always great service, friendly staff and a wide selection of meat. Sausage party!! I get my deli meat for sandwiches as well as my bacon there instead of the pre packaged stuff. It's WAY better!! Plus is less expensive that the other market down the street. read more

I've been a customer Johnnie's Market for over 15 years. The meat department was ALWAYS good, but when Ron took over, things only got better. This place has a really bad odor, I can't quite put my finger on it, perhaps it's the scent of mold. The produce is mediocre, the meat counter is a little worse with, yes, graying products and the dairy products are right at their expiration date or a couple days from expiring. They do sell Ahlgren wine at prices lower than the wine-maker does who is less than 6 miles away so that is a bonus and likely one of the main reasons we shop here. The employees are a little surly and I have yet to get them to speak while they are ringing up my groceries. One in particular won't even make eye contact she is so anti-social which makes the shopping experience very uncomfortable. read more

I go here for the meat counter. Friendly service and outstanding, flavorful house made sausages. I've always gotten good cuts here. I've just ignored their produce since they can't seem to match up to New Leaf. Prices are sometimes cheaper than the New Leaf and they carry unique things from across the pond (Atlantic, not Pacific) that New Leaf doesn't. Also, for better or worse, it's still got that 70's/early 80's vibe despite the remodel. I say own it. I've had some rude cashiers in the past, but lately everyone's been super nice. Caveat: yes, some of the town regulars who are homeless/alcoholic may hang out in front. They're not there all the time. There's not a ton of them and they may make you feel uncomfortable but I've never personally had a problem with them. They've always been respectful to me and I never give any money to them. read more

Okay, I have lived in Boulder Creek for a while now, and while I think the place looks like a dump, and has had some unfriendly and anti-social clerks running their registers, I have continued to go in occasionally in order to get one thing or another. After last Saturday, I will not be back. I bought two avocados and some salami, and had to ask the unfriendly clerk for the receipt after she handed me my change (that's right she just handed it to me, no mention of how much it was). Then, not one, but both avocados were found to be rotten on the inside. Go here if you like to waste your food dollar and enjoy being treated like your business doesn't matter. read more

I recommend the brisket medusa sandwich. You have to wait until 11am maybe 10:30am because that is when the brisket is ready (slow cooked and smoked overnight!). I ask them to make it the"normal" way and that already has peperoncinis and pickles. You can add more produce to it if you want but I think it is perfect the way it is. read more

The deli has some good items like the pasta salads, the chicken salad is really tasty. I like the deli there and the convenience that it gives. It is easier to get things from there than drive to a larger market. The sandwiches in the deli are huge and so good. read more

If you're looking for the most delicious sandwich in Boulder creek. This place has it. You can't go wrong with whatever you choose. I personally am a BIG fan of the Brisket Medusa. Holy sheep shit that sandwich is bomb!!! Smoked Brisket, hot pastrami, bacon, buffalo cheddar cheese, and pepper jack and a spicy siracha mayo.. all between delicious ciabatta or Dutch crunch. The only produce I have on that is onion. So good. Just make sure you order it as a Brisket medusa or you will get roast beef instead of Brisket. I've done that once but even then it was good. DO NOT GO FOR THEIR SANDWICHES. Help is nice enough there, prices ok, butcher dept is pretty good, but for the love of god go to new leaf or redwood keg for sandwiches. The bread is stale (dutch crunch) even after I asked if the dutch crunch was fresh. Stale, falling apart, tasteless...I couldnt even finish the sandwich. HORRIBLE. Get your act together please. Is very knowledgable and friendly and eagerly hands out advise on different cuts and how to prepare. Mind blown. And the sausages!!! Wow!! All groceries have similar food, but this place offers a calm and pleasant shopping experience, and a great deli/butcher counter.

I've shopped at Johnnie's for 17 years and until a year ago I would have given Johnnie's Super Market five stars. For a small mom and pop shop, their prices were competitive, their service was impeccable, and the quality of their meat and produce was consistently sound. This year, however, the scene at Johnnie's is very different. Prices have increased significantly, perhaps because they need to pay for the new banks of refrigerated coolers they've installed. Disappointingly, they seem to be cutting corners in the meat department as, while in the past I've been loyal to their ground beef, in the past year I've purchased it three times only to get home and discover it rancid (I won't be shopping at the meat department again.) Additionally, produce prices have risen and that section appears less well attended. I've purchased rancid coleslaw mix three times and when I finally called the store to register a complaint, the employee who took my call was terse and completely unapologetic. I'd like to see Johnnie's restore their former standards and service and indicate that they value and appreciate loyal local customers. read more
