Very late on the evening of the opening of the Shrimp Festival and all the restaurants were closing. Dined into Akari to grab something to eat. As busy as they were, we were seated very quickly and presented with a menu and placed a drink order. The menu was a mish mash of a variety of Asian food. That sent a "Red Flag" to me. Historically I have found that Asian restaurants in Jacksonsville who have these type of so called "Fusion" selection menus? Means they have no idea as to how the dishes are supposed to taste. So they do their version and 9 out of 10 times it is a disaster. And this was one of the 9 times. Had the Thai Basil beef? Stir fry with pieces of steak with the same flavor as my companions dish(something teriyaki). He ordered a sushi app and it came out with the same none sticky rice as my dish and was still warm? We were in town for just the night and a lot of places weren't open for dinner. Akari was the light on a cold foggy night! We opted to sit outside on the patio with our two toddlers and it worked out wonderful. Peggy was our waitress and she was very attentive and helpful. We ordered their salmon maki, taro negeri, spicy crab roll, californoa roll, miso soup, and edamame. Everything was amazing and so fresh. We will come back when in town. read more

I would love to give 5 stars because this place USED to be so good. Not there's a new menu, which was my first red flag. Lots of dishes to choose from. The food is completely different from the years of times we have eaten here before. We ordered honey chicken, orange chicken, hibachi, Gyoza , sushi and pork egg roll. The sushi and egg roll were okay. All the other dishes were heavily breaded and fried. It used to be fresh , not breaded. The orange chicken was spicy and flavorless. The hibachi was so incredibly salty it was almost inedible. Sadly , another place had succumbed to buying frozen garbage from a supplier and serving it up. the sushi was so delish, but the service was awful. we were there for a total of 2 hours with one server serving 13 at a time. even when everyone left the server prioritized cleaning the tables at closing time instead of attending to our needs. probably won't go back unfortunately. read more

While this is a sushi restaurant, they have other items for members of your party who may not like sushi. I fell into this category. I had the hibachi chicken and was very disappointed. I asked for fried rice with it and the rice was just white rice with some soy sauce. The chicken tasted like boiled chicken with no seasoning. I shared with several members of my group to get their opinion and they also thought the chicken was bland and dry. Location is great and the other members of my party enjoyed their sushi. If you are not a sushi lover, there are better compromises. read more

We did takeout so my review will focus more on the quality of the sushi and the service and ambiance. I did get a chance to look around and Akari is a very nice, quaint restaurant on the inside - fairly small but welcoming. The sushi bar itself is pretty small, so not sure about getting seating there if you were interested. We ended up ordering edamame (good), miso soup (just ok), yellowtail nigiri, an eel/avacado roll, and the Amelia Island roll. The sushi was very good - we really enjoyed all of the selections. Would have been much better to be at the restaurant in person for the presentation, but the food was excellent. read more

We were hungry and decided to dine here for dinner after a long day. I was surprised that we had to first seat ourselves on the patio while reviewing the menu, then we had to go inside, wait in line, order at the counter and pre-pay. There was no service except for when they brought out our food on paper plates with plastic utensils. It was simply not the dining experience we expected but whatever. We each ordered our sushi and the wait wasn't too long. The sushi came out with a nice plated presentation albeit on paper plates. The sushi was the only saving grace at Akari. The service was good, but the food was subpar. We had the bang bang shrimp for an appetizer. They came out quickly and were decent. We also split (3) sushi rolls. The Amelia Island, Snowman and the Gunisha roll. They weren't bad, but they weren't anything to rave about. I would say they were average. read more
